This MD P38 Lightning has got to be the worst RC kit we've ever come across in the history of flying RC planes, which says a lot! We needed to recruit help just to get it built in time without having to shut down our channel, but through enough persistence and thanks to our good friend, we are now ready to test it and see how it flies! To those of you that enjoy a true challenge, you might even welcome this sort of thing. To the rest of us, this one is most likely worth a pass.. that is unless it flies well ... and the odds of that are slim to none! Let's find out!

Great video! Thank you for the honest review; I will definitely stay away from this one. Where is the link for the recommended alternative? I'd like to add another plane to my collection.
Guys your link to banggood is in a different language.
I think with a 3D printer and some effort, this could be improved so much. I would not recommend using PLA for the motor mounts but ABS might work. I think it CAN be great, but it won't be out of the box. You have to essentially build a custom plane.
All I had to see was the 'Banggood' to know to avoid it "like the plague", if ya see what I did there. My history with them was a living nightmare.....dishonest vendors around every corner, shoddy merchandise and NEVER any refunds for ANY reason, despite one promise after another! A pox on them!!!
@@acerlazereye1232 That's odd. I've never had an issue with them. I only had to ask for a refund once because of a product malfunctioning, and I got my refund after sending them the order details and a short video detailing the problem.
When I was learning to fly 40 years ago my flight instructor told me that there are 2 kinds of RC airplanes, those that have crashed and those that are going to .
That canopy and center fuselage nose piece come precrashed out of the box so you don't have to worry about crashing, just go fly the snot out of it.
That's why when you finally finish a build you are really proud of and looks great there are times and temptations to never fly it.
Hm. Didn't have this lesson in the PPL so far. Luckily :-P
Yeah , I think it’s more of a RC thing, I never heard that when I got my PPL.
@@corvairchris82 I was joking ;)
New update:
Those that crash
Those that soon will
Those that were fortunate to survive.
The last one DOES exist. Pilot skills and experience are a major factor. I haven't totaled a plane since 1992. As far as the learning period between 1981 when I started and 1992....no comment. ;-)
You Saylors are great "Ambassadors" for this hobby. The fun you guys have and your ever cheerful and positive attitudes help your viewers share your experiences. Always a pleasure! Thank you.
I love the P-38 and just had to buy it when I found it on banggood. Just put it together and hope to get it up in the air soon.
I made several mods in order to avoid the build quality issues you guys brought up on the video.
1) Motors on their wooden supports: I painstakingly measured the distance between the cowling and the base of the propeller cone so that the motors wouldn't stick out much. Cut out the extra wood and gorilla glued the heck out of that support to the whole in the fuselage. All the while made sure the wooden sticks were at 90º to the fuselage.
2) ESCs on zip ties to the wooden block: Yeah right .... come on. We can do better than that. I bought extension bullet banana plug cables and instead stuck the ESCs into the fuselage through the whole on top of the fuselage. Secured them with the cables and some double-sided thick tape, and done. All that's housed in the motor cowling are the motors themselves and the cables connecting to the extension bullet banana plugs.
3) The nose. For me, the nose fit just fine. Not sure if you noticed, but the nose is meant to go *over* the top of the plastic cockpit. The cockpit slides into the cone. No issue there ...
4) Battery and receiver: There is nothing inside the cockpit to hold the receiver and battery securely. Important if you have a receiver like the FrSky S8R with stabilization, and a fat 3s 50C LiPO battery that can move around. Solved the problem by taking some chopsticks, cut to size so as to poke across the cockpit so that they serve as retainers for the battery. The receiver is tightly packed in the bottom groove of the cockpit, with battery sitting on top and pushed backward by the retainers. Already did a shake tests and nothing moves.
That's about it. Frankly, for less than $150 with the electronics (minus battery and receiver/transmitter), this kit is quite complete. Sure, you'll need to be a bit of a modeler and engineer to build on top of the crappy instructions, but that's the fun of modeling!! Now I just hope the darn thing flies ... your video gave me confidence that it does, against all odds! :-D
I was lucky enough to see a restored p-38 fly when i was a kid
Lucky as heeeellllll
Lucky this is my favorite plane
That would be incredibly cool!
Haven't seen one in flight but there are tons of ww2 aircraft at Sun N Fun on Florida every year, last year there was a beautiful P-38 parked.
Did get to see an awesome P-40 airshow and got probably the best photograph ill ever take of it. Looks like a damn post card.
When I was a kid I touched a spitfire being restored and left a tiny fingerprint in its paint. Not one upping, just sharing my memory of old warbirds when I was a kid
I must admit I like that you tell both the good & not good, thanks......
love the honesty and straight forward info, thanks
I think I was probably one of the first to buy this model when it first came out. I cussed the build from the get go. I ended up making my own modifications to the model, it doesnt look that good but they work. I figured it would never fly but after my maiden flight I was impressed how it behaved in the air. I actually flew mine earlier today.
Gorgeous looking plane in the air. I always loved that twin-tail design. Really happy it surprised you on the flight Nate. The way you were talking I was holding my breath waiting for the inevitable crash.
making it a post hole digger is probably the best you can do with a badly designed plane like this one. i think i will stick with balsa
Surprise, surprise, it flies after all but, so does a discarded shopping bag in the right wind.
But the shopping bag's not as purty...
Thanks for the AeroScout video. After 40 yrs., I started flying again. The AeroScout is perfect for these old nerves and eyes :-) ...A great plane !
I just bought a 2007 Eflite P-38 at a swap meet. Nice plane, but I had the same experience on takeoff that you did, except I did not recover mine as well. I did a normal takeoff and it went straight up, looped around and lawn-darted into the ground. Lots of pieces! I'm in the final stages of repair. Looking forward to trying it again. I love the design of the plane, and looks great in the air. Thanks for the video!
I watched a few videos and I have suscribed.I have enjoyed every video I saw. You two have good personalities and it's almost like hanging out with friends who enjoy the same stuff.
Hi guys I just love your channel. I am new to RC but flying an RC Plane has been on my bucket list for over 40 years, now thanks to technology and the hard work(and play) by people like yourselves I can finally tick this one off my list. I managed it with one of those cool little RTF Warbirds, the Spitfire to be exact. I have now moved on to building kits and have almost finished an F22 raptor. I have just today bought one of these off a guy who originally bought it so I got it at a good price, at least by New Zealand standards(Everything is so expensive here, this kit would have cost him at least NZ$400.00) Any how after watching your video while unboxing mine I realized that it's not so bad. For example If you put this together as intended the front of the canopy is held in place by slipping under the nose cone, which you must not fully glue in place. I guess Tom had fully glued it and his best option was to trim off the bit of canopy that slipped under the nose. And of course don't use Hot Glue on this thin plastic,a rookie mistake I made on my F22. any how the Moral of this story is that most adversaries can be over come with a little knowledge and a fair amount of hindsight, so for any one with this Model, Don't dis-pair things could be much worse like going without any model to fly for 40 years!! Much Love and respect from Down Under.
Thanks for reviewing this Saylors, the P-38 is my all time favorite war bird, I have looked at this several times but it just looked too horrible to buy, turns out I was right. I did buy a Flite Line P-38 that is just outstanding, however it is MUCH more expensive! Thanks Tom for building this so Nate could fly it, good job for what you had to work with!
:) I know what you meant, but the comment sounded so funny to my ears "It's a warbird not a stunt plane!" Aerobatic planes were designed to mimic fighter planes. As a former USAF fighter pilot (F-15C) and a warbird pilot with the Confederate (now commemorative ) air force for over 30 years, I can tell you that warbirds are designed to take a lot more stress than "stunt" or aerobatic planes are. RW of course, not RC necessarily, but the comment she made sounded so bizarre! :) Loved the video, I may buy one just for the challenge involved! Well done!
The nosecone was supposed to be put on far enough that the front of the canopy slips under it.
He put it on incorrectly. That’s why it doesn’t look right.
Perhaps some kind fellow would have told him, If he ever stopped talking, that is!
Thank you for this warning and doing such a great job of flying that thing.
you both have a great channel love it
So I first would like to say I absolutely love your channel. I've been into rc's since 1988. I love my crawlers and my vintage racing boats and cars. I tried to fly a plane years ago and it didn't go well....lol. Since I've been watching your channel though I think i might try it again in the spring. I do fly copters and quads so i think I'll move up and try planes again. Again you guys are awsome! Keep up the good work!
I'm a rc car guy and started flying with a 2 channel plane. Throttle was channel 1 and channel 2 was the tail left and right control. The controls are just like a rc car and now I'm up to a 3 channel plane now 😁
He Is not a modeller, you have to Build them then you can Say i'm a passionate model airplane builder and flier
Now $ 265.00.thanks goodbang. Great stuff guys. I really appreciate your honesty and humour ! Thanks so much.
Great video! Your buddy did a great job with what you provided. 😀👍✈
Wow! Not bad! Looks great in the air. Tom did a great build, but it's really all about that Band-Aid!
Did you get a new camera? Videos are so much more crisp and vivid? Looks great, and your sound is awesome.
Nice looking plane. I think the right 'fin' still has a little curve to it. That's weird that you get only one shark sticker.
"Let's look in the trashcan".....and then they got some straws and springs.....LoL. I can't stop laughing and I'm picturing some guy actually doing this and trying to sell me a P38 LoL! You and Abby RULE!!!!!!
Looks great in the air.
Great video guys 👍
You can't argue with the fact that it flies well. However, I think that is because of what your friend did to the plane and also you are an expert pilot. If I tried to fly that it would be a disaster!
That's unfortunate. The P38 is probably my favorite warbird, with one of the coolest stories of any plane. If there are better models of the P38 I would love to see them on your channel!
Looks great
Amazing I like it I like it's a challenge also great winter project that would make great job I want one now thanks guys
It's like a Dollhouse I bought my daughter 20 years ago. It basically a box of sticks and some directions. You get this plane kit and build it fixing what needs to be fixed along the way.
All my planes are boxes of sticks, both before and after I build and fly them!
Nate your reaction cracked me i laughed so hard as you didn't expect really anything good to happen and yet it actually flew quite well but at the expense of a lot of work to get it to do what it did
I don't understand I thought I did join Nate and Abby years ago before Baby Emilia came to this world? Did youtube did this unjoining TheRcSaylors? Oh well Thank you once again Abby and Nate 🙏
Dunno'. All that aside, for $60? Not exactly tragic. Lol. Thanks for the video! Enjoyed it.
If you had split, then overlapped the nose material, then trimmed and glued, the nose would have been much better. Nice vid though! Great job!
Well, you told us what was coming on this one on you your Vlog broadcast. Too bad, this is my favorite WWII plane - my dad saw them piloted by aces right *between* hangers in SFO...the pilots wanted to get transferred back to the Japanese front after being posted to training! I like to imagine that!
I love how you are on a roll of war birds
I think you made a great job of it. Did look good in the air. Guys as usual, great video. Cheers ✈️😊👍
Great job Nate. The nose reminds me of the old days of heat shrinking everything around a balsa framework. Lol
At first I thought it was a second hand plane, until Nate started explaining LOL
Nate yr on about bad packaging i bought a lexan 4x4 body shell and they just sent it in a plastic bag no padding or any type of protection at all and it came all bent out of shape to say i was gobsmacked is an understatement lol
great video and info
And a year later it's now $159 so thankful Nate that you and Abby do honest reviews WOW what junk bless your family stay well
Great review.
Anything will fly with power. I just saw an actual piece of lettuce radio controlled last night.
This went on my wishlist the moment I saw it. It's not on there anymore. 🤣
But isn't that nose cone supposed to slide back and butt up to that "lovely" canopy?
Lol not just me that thinks this is a bit of a dog's dinner then. I put one of these together about a month ago for review. Tip though. The nose cone is supposed to be baggy so that you can slide the front edge of the canopy under it to prevent lift. No need to have mangled it like that lol. Then a square of velcro on the back of the canopy. Much neater and more convenient. Also cut 20mm off the wood spars that the motor mount sits in then it moves the nose cones in nice and close and tidy to the cowlings. Also helps with C of C as mine was way nose heavy no matter what I did. In the end had to put quite of lot of lead on the tail to properly balance it. Also that undercarriage is a waste of time. But as I discovered belly landing means broken props so looking to make a mod. Was also impossible to get the same props again which is good as they are rubbish. I too was surprised however how well it flies and it does look good in the air. But yeah not a build for the faint hearted. Takes a long time. More if you actually want it to look nice too.
Now you tell me!!!! ; ) I ordered this Banggood P-38 a month ago and just got it a few days ago. Your unboxing experience was exactly like mine. Mine had the same crooked bent tail and dented on the wing through the wing and one aileron, dented on the bottom of the center fuselage body and only ONE side of the "flying tigers" shark face sticker! I don't know your friend Tom to helped you get this clunker together, LOL! HELP! I got $81.00 invested in it with electronics.
This is a great example as to why you should watch the entire video. From I hate this to it flys great and is fun. DO NOT SKIP ON THE SAYLORS VIDEOS.
"Will it fly"? Really? ANYTHING WILL FLY IF YOU PUT A BIG ENOUGH ENGINE ON IT. The F-4 Phantom II showed that.
Good luck with that theory. Richard Vail
@@markzimmerman7279 The joke, you obviously know nothing about, was that you can make a bus fly if you strap 2 j79 engines on it, that pig will fly. The F4 was...not exactly the most aerodynamic aircraft ever build, but it did have 2 very powerful engines on it.
@@rvail136 theoretically or in practice , impossible to control, I think it would be more like launching than flying 🤔
that would make it more of a rocket, almost a missile
@@snowman333- it goes without saying humour is lost on the interwebs
Sorry I'm chiming in late on this one guys but ya did an awesome flight and Tom did an amazing job putting it together. Folding props might be good? Would be Interesting to know if she still flys? 🤔
Try reversing the motors and switching the propellers. Twins with outward turning propellers have the problem of the upward swing near the center canceling lift and reducing elevator effectiveness.
Enjoyed your video, but that R2D2 t shirt is really cool 👍🏻
It's a reissue of the GWS P-38 remolded in EPO.
How could you possibly go wrong? They flew amazingly well.
Tom did a good job building it . 👍🙏⚓😃
Worst ever? Not by far. That's just an advanced kit that needs lots of skill and work to build right. Certainly easier to work with than a box of lumber and a set of plans. It's more suited towards scratch builders than assemblers.
I think it is a good base to start with, but certainly not a put-together-and-fly type of craft. Definitely best for modelers who build. I see a lot of potential. New balsa upper fuselage deck with clear canopy, Retracts, etc. A carved balsa block nose is called for. Many balsa kits I build just came with blocks of wood you have to shape yourself.
For $65 for such a large model, I did not expect much. In a nutshell, BUILDER's kit, not a FLYER's kit you just put together.
Well that went better than expected. :)
That flight is a testament to the builders skill.
Are you talking about the builder's "skill" that melted the nose and stuck it in the wrong place?
@@DeadlyDiddly I think that's what the shark face was for to stick the nose on with
Cool!. Nice to see it flew well. Gotta love those BG specials. :D
Lol this one has been price slashed down to nearly being free!
Just a question from someone who knows little about planes this looks very much like the De Haviland Mosquito apart from the tail but which was the better of the two when it came to aerial warfare. Love all models as I feel the inner boy in me resurface and when I retire I’d like to have a go at making and flying, sailing for the sheer excitement and pleasure. Thanks for the video guys very interesting indeed.
I would still buy this, since it is a good flier, and very inexpensive for the size of it. An experienced builder can overcome a few obstacles during assembly. Unfortunately the Warehouse cannot ship to the US at this time.
Classic ballooning on the landing. Too much airspeed. Guess it's tricky with no flaps and no ASI. Respect for getting it down in one piece.
Nate you should try the HobbyKing A1 skyraider. The level of detail is amazing. It's got flight stability and it's less than $100 and you only need to put one screw in 😀
Where is the link to a similar plane that you mentioned at the end of the video?
Can you tell me do you register your planes
With the FAA
They're asking more than $150 for this plane now... No thanks!
She flew better than she looked! Lol! Another great review guy's! 👍👍😎👽
Great work guys, think I'll just stick with Horizon planes .
That's why I like you guys even if you're giving a Plane by a sponsor if it don't work you tell us. thank you
No problem my friend. Just know that we are not sponsored though. If we ever are, we make it very clear, but most of the time we are not. Either way, we are probably even more critical of something if it was given to us. Thanks so much for tuning in!
Ya know, Flite Test just opened pre-orders on their 1460mm P-38 foamboard model. I think that would be a far better option, and despite being one of their advanced models, probably easier to assemble!
Hey what's up with bang good lately if you check there prices in most of the reliable fpv products there often way higher prices or only $3 cheaper and atleast 1 or 2 month of wait time I just cant see doing that when several other places are only $3 more
Awesome video! And no I will not be purchasing this plane. Awesome build and I'm sure that's why it actually was capable of flight!
A crazy person who looking for a good challenge..lol thank you .
A power boosting Band-Aid!
Nate ,the build is halve the fun.if you can do that you will enjoy it more than fly out of the box.you may send me one of these
Trust me, I love putting planes together a lot but this thing was all over the place. The kit is only like $65 if you want to give it a go 👍😎⚓
Thats a gws p38 which I bought and still fly, mine has all those same parts and everything but its all in the time you take to build it. Mine took me 48 hours to build just so everything was dried and ready
The P-38 lightning. Built by Hughes aircraft for world war 2. Howard Hughes himself designed and flew this plane. He had a terrible crash on a low-level pass showing off, and practically got killed. He barely survived. Interesting history I just wanted to share. Keep on flying.
That is very interesting! Thank you for sharing that. Always love learning about aircraft 👍⚓😎
So Nate what do you like about it 👌🏻. Keep flying over Death Valley and hopefully it might take a nose dive.
It flies good, the GWS P40 had horrible tip stall characteristics it had to be flown fast and with wide turns, I bought and old kit built it and installed stabilization now its fun to fly.
I keep thinking of Flite Test and my first glider with a pop up motor from Graupner. Josh gave it great reviews and really dumbed down the flaws the thing had. It was a flying scrap pile and ended up as such. I remember how upset I was at Josh for not being truthful like you are. After that, I learned to take whatever he said on a plane review with a grain of salt. I know it was intended to keep sponsorship and for them it was free. Thankyou for being honest.
How about the tbs cap2 review 👍👍👍👍👍
Thats an awesome R2D2 tshirt
$215.99 now for the PNP, and I bought it ANYWAY! LOL It’s not even painted anymore! The alternative is a 1600mm $450ish beauty from Motion RC. It seems to me that any P51 hand launches more predictably than single engine warbirds, I am guessing it is because of the stabilizing effect of having the mass of the motors located outboard of the centerline which would dampen any tendency to torque roll upon acceleration, do you agree?
That sounds like a very fair assessment of torque roll with one motor vs two. Makes sense to me! 👍😁😎⚓
Ugh...and my only takeaway amidst all that mayhem is, at 14:43, the left-wing decal's on backwards.. lol
TOTALLY SAD!! Thanks Saylors for ALL the effort to bring us your honest review!! 💟👍😘
Now that’s a Jalloppy!
I stand corrected . Thank you .
Time to build a Flite Test plane
I think the word you're looking for Nate is the word Spinner.
Thank you ! :)
Prop caps works, although I've never heard that one in the RC hobby 🤓🤓🤓🤣🤣🤣
Program in some differential thrust for the yaw????
Yeah I suppose you could do that. Good idea! 👍⚓😎
I know this is a old video but hope ya see my comment..have you built from scratch rc be it plane boat or car if so have ya posted a video
Best instructions ever! LOL
OK don't buy thanks Nate! Thank thanks Tom for the engineering works LOL
I bought one Dec 2021. Its really not that bad, this is what the RC hobby use to be 10 years ago: actually building . Some time , thought and parts is needed .
Its a copy of a old GWS . The GWS was a brushed gearbox motor plane, hence the stick mounts.
For less than $100 , its not Eflight quality. Its old school .
I personally wouldnt buy another if I crashed it though :-)
Cheers
Recieved it. put it together in 1 day and I didn't even need the instructions. Was my first bought kit, only other time I build a plane was 3d printed. It was obvious the nose cone was supposed to go far on so the canopy locks underneath. Used old brushless motor magnets to lock click on the backside of the canopy. The plane feels like it's on rails.. it's terrible on grass works great on a asphalt landing strip but I have changed to bigger tyres and no problem on grass now. Kinda feel sad you mentioned you need your friend to make this work.
I dont NEED my friend to help build this, but was GRATEFUL to have a friend help. We work Hard at what we do. Keep in mind we record videos, edit and upload them, not just play with our RC stuff. We also have a young daughter and doggie that we take care of 24/7. We own a house, and just general life gets in the way, as well as work. So yes, we did appreciate having some help. Glad you had a positive experience with yours! Happy Flying 👍⚓😎
It is all the same here. A dog and a very eager 4y/o that helped me on some stickers and color choices for the canopy. I'm mainly sad that it was not as much of a challenge. As I was looking forward something complex. But I'm sure it's the randomness from banggood items and how you get them. Thx for your reply
I hear you on the packaging, I bought the B-17 'liberty belle' last year and had to piece it together as the journey from China is a rough one....I think they dropped it from the 'Great Wall' before shipping!?! Ha!. But great first models for the $$ if you are starting out. Cheers
Nate, I would have lost $25 betting that thing wouldn't launch and fly. Go figure! Oh, and...prop spinners! :D
Nate I love that shirt
I clicked on this, because the P-38 is my favorite warbird. Too bad this kit was so shoddy. Nice work!
