- n 2002, the Indian Western state of Gujarat witnessed some of the most violent religious riots in the country's recent history. The number of those killed is disputed, but more than a thousand people, mostly Muslims, died.
Some human rights groups have pointed the finger at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was Gujarat's chief minister at the time, for what they say was turning a blind eye to the violence.
While an Indian court cleared Modi of allegations that he intentionally failed to stop the riots, a controversial new book, Gujarat Files: Anatomy of a Cover Up, makes stinging accusations and offers what it calls proof that links Modi and his allies to the violence.
The author of the book, Rana Ayyub, said she had to self-publish the investigation because mainstream media would not touch it. Critics, however, argue that there are serious flaws in Ayyub's investigations.
So is dissent being stifled in Modi's India? In this week's Arena, Ayyub debates with Sadanand Dhume, a columnist for The Wall Street Journal and resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, about whether the government is censoring dissent.

Miss Rana Ayyub doesn't have any proper facts and argument to prove her point. A great critic of Modi's government and journalist Madhu trehan had asked her about the tapes which she declined to share. On what basis could she say that nobody was ready to show the tapes in media. Even in Tehelka (A eminent media organisation in India, where Miss Rana Ayyub was working as journalist) rejected her false claims. The founders of Tehelka Tarun Tejpal and Shoma Chaudhury rejected her false allegations.

I think most News agencies don't want to publish anything strongly Ant-Modi is not much to do with political pressure but a lot to do with their ratings taking a hit. I want to understand this. She writes her book, publishes it, sitting in india , the books not been banned or anything but infact is discussed and debated and then saying all she just said, but claims that her life would be in danger if she releases the proof that would actually support her tall claims, it makes no sense? I am not anti muslims but sometimes they deserve a taste of their own medicine, that is exactly why in gujrat they are now living peacefully, else their unjustified demands are mind boggling.Muslim demand #1 :- bann on books on prophet as it hurts their religious sentimets but freedom to eat beef. (My position is am against any ban)Muslim demand #2 :- quota on the grounds of religion, infact they want to get special treatment (be it for admission in colleges or gocernment jobs). then they claim they are secular.

Well i agree to a previous comment that Rana is annoying. But I agree with her that she needs a media outlet to make her tapes public. In India you get picked up by police for silly Facebook posts, Rana definitely fears for her life. If not the police, some bhakt would kill her.
