"I miss when games, looked like video games!"
As someone who's in a below middle class family, words can't describe how much I agree with this!
I get so tired of all these new games basically requiring an arm and a leg to run.
Games like ULTRAKILL, Risk of Rain Returns & 2, and Deep Rock Galactic are games I love because of their gameplay and amazing looks, despite not being "Super 4k photo realistic"
I feel gamers kinda forget that games aren't a picture of a river taken with the latest DSXLR.
Exactly!
Yeah, I connected a lot with that sentence too. Why is the industry so fixated with resolution and photorealism?, they shoot themselves in the foot because every project becomes way more expensive to make every year, making it a far more riskier endeavor.
Huh??? They can run on low-end decently optimized cheap PC no problem and look decent, WTF are you on about???
@@diamondhamster4320 Low end to you may be high end to me.
so glad you enjoyed Cavern of Dreams : ) thanks james
Got to Beta-test Corn Kidz 64. Amazing game with excellent controls, and the developer was so lovely during the process, extremely open to criticism, and super quick to fix bugs. Support Corn Kidz 64!
Thank you for continuing to do what you do. CZcams has reached a point where it basically hates you if you don't play exactly by the rules of the algorithm. And you could've easily pivoted to covering the latest AAA releases and trendy viral games and have way more subscribers by now. But you've continued to stick to your guns for all these years, and I really appreciate that. You play these video games because you genuinely want to show them off to people rather than seeing them as an easy source of ad revenue. I know it's not healthy to put creators on a high pedestal, especially with what so many of them have gotten away with. But I think I can tell who's faking it, and never once did I feel like I was being patronized by the work you put in. And your ending speech about indies really resonated with me. So thank you for keeping your channel going and putting the spotlight on games made by people that actually like games. Corn Kidz 64 is definitely on my radar now.
Here's hoping Corn Kids 64 gets a sequel
Here's hoping BogoZone never leaves us again. 🥹
I've read that the creator has another game from many years back that's very similar. Don't remember what it's called and haven't played it yet, but if you liked Corn Kidz that may be worth looking into!
@@NitroRadLyle in Cube Sector?
The real sleeper hit this year. I just saw a trailer for it, bought it, and had a great time! Pretty challenging but it is so charming!
@@PridetoonsBogoZone? More like BozoGone, amirite?
...
Alright, that sucked.
James is always so happy. I hope we get an update video with more kitties.
Also I totally agree that if you’re upset a big studio won’t make a new game in a series then find a similar indie game.
God knows how many Paper Mario people I’ve suggested “Bug Fables” and now “Born of Bread” but then I hear “whaa but it’s not Mario!!”
Those whiners will never be happy. No matter what you give them, they'll find a way to be upset with it.
Bug Fables having actual character arcs because it's not legally mandated to maintain the eternal status quo was a real breath of fresh air, I didn't expect to get so attached to these little buggers
I've been wondering if you were gonna talk about "Corn Kidz 64" at some point! It ended up being one of my favorite things I've ever played on Steam. So much so that I ended up going for full achievement completion and it's lived rent free in my head ever since! It's so good to know you didn't miss out on this one, being the platform guy and all! I can't wait until we get more from the series!
Same. I randomly got recommended the trailer to the game on youtube and bought that same day. I'm at the tower place in the game now. He's been sleeping on that game its been out since October.
@@jamescorvus6709 I guess maybe he wasn't seeing as how he said he completed it. It was just one of the many things he ended up tackling. But I'm glad he got around to talking about it, *and* it ended up as his number one!
Interior Worlds mentioned! Honored to have it on your list, thank you~
Glad games like Pseudo and Cornkidz are getting more of a spotlight now, they're of the few that perfectly nail that exact vibe of late 90's 3D platformers.
Modded Sonic Adventure 2 is by far the best way to play the game. I don’t like to use any mechanic or physics based mods outside of the Chao Garden (although I do fix the broken deadzones that are present on the modern releases via Steam itself), but there has been great progress made this year towards a full Dreamcast Conversion mod like Sonic Adventure has. We finally have transparent Artificial Chaos back!
Oh man... I did NOT like that physics mod! Anything that changes the way the gameplay feels I avoid. SA2 is a fickle and clunky beast, but 20 years of muscle memory turns that thing into one of the snappiest and fun platformers ever made! But everything else is so much fun to fix/change around. The one that adds SA1 Tails is SUPER fun! Obliterating every Sonic stage with the flying just like Adventure 1 was such a blast
Also a full Dreamcast conversion mod sound SICK! BetterDX is the original one you're talking about, yeah? I remember playing that on PC a few years back, really nice having the original lighting and colors back again.
@@NitroRad Yeah, that's the one! So far for SA2 it's a bunch of individual mods with a variety of fixes, but SA2 Render Fix in particular has been making a lot of good strides and started consolidating a bit. I would definitely recommend checking it out.
@@NitroRad I used a mod that turns all the mission 4s (the ones with a time limit) into a mirror mode, such a simple change but it does make going for all the emblems less repetitive!
@NitroRad SADX has an utterly insane modding community. There's a mod that adds Klonoa and alters the gameplay so he has his attack and throw.
@@ALloydRH I might look into that whenever I do my next 180 Emblem playthrough. Mission 4 is pretty redundant as-is, but mirror mode sounds like it would be interesting.
Pseudoregalia really was just so good.
I also really liked Pizza Tower, Hi-Fi Rush, and Super Mario Bros Wonder. 2023 was a good year for games.
the closing thoughts point about being tired of games looking realistic is SO REAL. I've felt that for ages, and its sad that until Mario Wonder, AAA had no intention of being cartoony and fun. All this being said I'm heavily interested in Corn Kidz 64 now, will defo give it a look!
Swollen to Bursting is CRIMINALLY underplayed! Thank you so much for putting it in front of more people!
It’s honestly become one of favorite games of all time, I can’t suggest it enough to others
Very highly recommend Slay the Princess, it's a horror VN with an amazing art style and bizarre structure that seems right up your alley.
I was expecting him to talk about it too 😣
I'm so glad to see SWOLLEN TO BURSTING getting more coverage! I found out about it from eurothug4000's end of year retrospective, and played the whole thing in one sitting. Media doesn't make me cry often, but SWOLLEN TO BURSTING made me cry twice... something about knowing what it's like to be that protagonist, rummaging through their memories of their apartment... it's a really important story, I think
Thank you so much for noticing Corn Kidz 64! This game needs so much more love and praise! is seriously really good.
One thing I love about your videos is that you have a knack for finding really good hidden gems, and the games that people are more familiar with, you do a good job on why the game is good. You're one of the few people on CZcams who does a good job convincing me to spend money on a game I've never heard of.
Keep being awesome! I'm looking forward to what you have in store in 2024!
Yo, showing love to Corn Kidz 64 is awesome! It's a game I stumbled across on steam a month ago and bought on a whim, and after beating it I was wondering when this title was gonna get some more recognition. Severly undderatted and I can't wait to see what that team makes next
i'm glad he mentoned corn kidz. that game is so good.
Oh my goodness you echoed my thoughts EXACTLY during your thoughts on enjoying indies lately more than the big releases! I find that more often I get REALLY attached to what independent creators make rather than the safe, marketable stuff! They’re filled with so much more passion and wackiness!
My most anticipated game (alongside Crow Country because it DOES look incredible) is EASILY Stray Children by Onion Games- a studio filled with former love-de-lic devs (Moon Remix RPG Adventure, Dandy Dungeon, etc)
You play 24 Killers? I didn't get a chance to try it, but it's apparently amazing if you like Moon Remix RPG
@@NitroRad I just bought it last sale actually, SUPER stoked to try it out :)
Another indie game from 2023 that I want to bring attention to that I beat recently was Gravity Circuit. The game felt like a love letter to the Mega Man Zero series giving a character that focused less on running and jumping and more of breathing down an enemy's neck with a close and personal beatdown. Also the addition of the grappling hook and tech makes speedrunning the game super fun. It was also made in part by Dominic Ninmark. For those unfamiliar with that name, he was part of the Mega Man X Corruputed fan project. The fact that he went and took part in making a cool unique game in the spirit of Mega Man with a cool twist is awesome.
In the last few videos you did from this series you mentioned these don't make as much views and aren't really worth making all that much, but man those are some of my favorites
The amount of enthusiasm you have talking about those games seriously make me feel like videogames in general are never gonna really get stale, even with you being older than me you still have that magic of enjoying games to the fullest, it's the best source of recommendations I've ever seen lol
Mentioning something else, I don't really expect this to be seen but, ever heard of Lunacid? It's an amazing game, when I played it for some reason I seriously thought "y'know what, James would probably like this"
this video made me to play swollen to bursting, got completely absorbed for about 4 hours until i beat it. i don't know what emotion but i'm certainly feeling something
I love your outlook on indie games-they can do what we’re waiting for from AAA studios or even better! Also I’d love a video on Hotel Dusk when you get around do it! I always recognize the music when you use it in your videos, it’s one of my favorite games!
I’ve subscribed since 2014. I left a snarky comment in one of your earlier videos and you responded and it made me realize CZcamsrs are people. So ya thanks for that and have a great 2024
I'm so happy I found this channel dude! I haven't found someone so enthusiastic about video games as you on CZcams!
I was super happy to see you mention Rolling Rascal, the creator also made sonic GT which is just my favorite sonic game ever, and I'm happy to see their newest work get some spotlight! SO HYPED FOR THE FULL RELEASE!!!
I rarely ever comment, but i really look forward to your games of the year videos. It's so refreshing how unique the games you play are.
Never heard of Corn Kidz, but you got me DEFINITELY intrigued ! You also got me to play Pseudoregalia and it really was an amazing time, so thanks for sharing your passion for those kinds of games that fly under so many radars and here's to a happy 10 year anniversary !
Thank you so much, I sincerely look forward to this video every year. I don't care how long it takes, your unique taste and perspective always direct me to things I never would have considered but sound right up my alley. This is a long way to say Swollen to Bursting is loading up right now lmao but seriously, thank you again!
You look like Rayman with limbs
Found your videos this past year and have loved every one I've seen. Really looking forward to seeing what you put out this year!
I did not click with Corn Kidz 63 at ALL but I'm glad you enjoyed it. You're very good at articulating why you like something warts and all, and I keep coming back to your content no matter how much I wind up disagreeing because you're so genuine and earnest. Thank you for creating and I hope you have a great 2024, dude.
Love your focus on lesser known indie stuff. I started watching you for classic ps1 horror survival stuff but I'm absolutely loving everything else you recommend. Great stuff Nitro and thank you for the excellent recommendations!
Can't freaking wait for that Hotel Dusk video man, I've been looking forward to you making a video on that game for years lol
WILD that it's been 10 years, always looking forward to your new videos! Also hell yeah, Hotel Dusk!
There is something so satisfying just hearing Rad talk. He unites a small creative love in my fucking soul, always something interesting and new which expands my game vocabulary. Sincerely you are an S tier CZcamsr. My genuine favorite. I appreciate all you do, keep it up.
This was such a dope list! One of my top favorites of this year was one that you actually covered in your “Rad Platformers” video iirc: Super Kiwi 64! Such a really short, sweet, and simple experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. :)
This is amazing! I thought I saw most of the cool and interesting games that were out last year, but you have provided another few examples.
Backlog of games - to the infinite!
I’ve never heard of corn kids but I need it NOW. Love your videos!! 💜
Great video as always! Also really appreciate your impressions of the steam deck! I’ve been going back and forth these past months on whether to get a deck or a ps5 I’m not very much routing for deck!
Great list, really looking forward to checking out some of the ones you mentioned that I hadn't seen otherwise.
Also... 10 years of Nitro Rad?! Incredible, happy to have been along for the ride! :D Cheers to a good 2024!! 💖
I was going through your channel yesterday looking at the old Raddest vids wondering when 2023 would come out. Thanks for the recommendations.
I've also been playing OoT + MM randomizer, it's so much fun! Thanks for doing this list every year, I always find something new and cool to play!
Always look forward to these videos they help me find so many cool games. Thanks for all the effort you put in.
Another fantastic quick look at thinks you enjoyed/caught your interest!
Always look forward to these vids. Thanks for your hard work spreading the good word of great games!
Thank you for spotlighting great 3D platformer games for all these years. Your channel is a very special place for discovering them.
I really appreciate you highlighting games I wouldn’t have otherwise known about. It’s awesome
Thanks for the video James! Love and appreciate all your hard work. As I get older, I have less time to follow video games, so many of these games are ones that I completely missed. I trust your opinion and I'm thankful for you bringing all these wonderful titles to our attention. Thanks again!
Great video. So many cool games that I missed this year, so I appreciate you pointing them out. I think that “Swollen to Bursting” game looks pretty interesting for instance.
this year has had soso many good games and im so glad you showcased some of my favorites!! looking forward to what you play in 2024!
every year i feel the need to thank you for these videos because of how i use them to find good games to play!! a lot of our favourite games we've learned about through this series of videos!!!
I've been looking forward this video. Thank you for the recommendations!
Bought Corn Kidz 64 right after finishing this video. Finally beat it just about 45 minutes ago! Wow! This one was great. Need to figure out how to open the level 5 door and get past the starting area of “the other place” though. Thank you for the videos and I really hope you continue to highlight these N64 style, indie, 3D platformers. Pseudoregalia was another banger I got after watching your episode on it, but it ended up being too hard for me and I put it down. Now I think I’m ready to pick that back up!
I have been subscribed for a while and I must say this channel is great ,I was browsing older vids and I really enjoy how much more peaceful you seem now. You can really tell how much you enjoy the games, and I like it a lot. I will definitely check out baulders gate.
You're my go-to indie game guy. I really appreciate the work you do. Happy 10 year CZcams anniversary, my friend. Cheers! 🥂🎉
Great video! Always enjoy learning of some of the more unknown games
I love your general enthusiasm and your genuine love for indie games. Keep being you
these videos are always awesome to watch, I always get excited when I see a nitro rad best games vid in my feed
I love it when you do any of these recommendation-type videos cause there's ALWAYS some sick little indie gem I've never heard of that immediately goes on my "to buy" list, haha. Grabbed Cavern of Dreams and Corn Kidz, and added Crow Country to my wishlist....so many good indies man
I'm super glad you brought up the camera for Pikmin 4. As much as the orthogonal overhead gives a wide viewing angle, the grounded camera has such a decent periphery that I never feel overwhelmed other than taking the world in.
Also 32:15, this is exactly why as much as the triple A titles get wild, stuff like SoulStorm pushing the cinematic platformer gameplay to the limit amazes me. I actually found myself in areas where inventory management never removed the objectives or solutions, instead challenging how I tackled sonething in front of me. And it came out in 2021! Totally understand.
Great highlights James.
this'll probably be buried because youtube sucks, but i just wanted to start by saying: great video as always! and secondly, thank you so much for bringing swollen to bursting to my attention. my year has been off to a crummy start and as someone who has struggled with the themes present in the game in the past, it hit so close to home i was ugly sobbing practically all night (in a good way of course). so thanks again for making my year a little better james :)
Brooooo you are doing a fantastic service here. I found 4 new games that look totally amazing in your recommendations. Great stuff!
hi man this is why I'm subscribed to u you always give really cool interesting not so famous games but better
I know these videos don’t always perform well but just wanna say your recommendations are unique and awesome and hope you won’t ever stop.
Yesssssss New episode!!!!!
I love your top 10s, so excited!
About Corn Kidz 64: Petronius did a video on that game & when I first saw the thumbnail, I thought for a second that I somehow missed another platformer video from you. NOPE, different channel.
I think I might know the channel you're talking about!
@@Petronious Speak of the legend himself
Based on your comments on Cocoon, I can't recommend Patrick's Parabox strongly enough! It's another worlds-within-worlds puzzle game that gets MUCH more ambitious with its mechanics.
Appreciate this list a lot I literally would have never heard of Cornkidz 64 before this and I'm definitely going to try it
Thank you for putting so many cool indie platformers on my radar. Would never have heard of half of these without you!
Great video, nice covering of some titles I wasn't aware of, and now I'm that much closer to emptying my wallet for a steam deck. Been watching you for a few years now, hope it will be a good anniversary year both personally and professionally!
Super neat video once again!
Hotel Dusk video? That'd be fantastic and to be honest with how much you use its OST in your videos I kinda associate it with you. Seeing you in Hotel Dusk's artstyle for a segment would be also dope
Your Pseudoregalia video convinced me to get a Steam Deck at the end of last year, and I'm very much looking forward to what it'll do for me this upcoming year of games!
I think even moreso than wanting to play a lot of the N64-esque platformers, but you actually sold me on the Steam Deck.
I am not a PC gamer but I like the idea of using steam like a console and recording footage from it is worth it alone. In fact I would love to a video or recommendations of PC games for Consoles Gamers like Killer7 since I didn't the HD version was PC only, let alone existed.
James, your work is some of my favorite on youtube and thank you for 10 years of radness!
I really appreciate the types of esthetics and gameplay mechanics that you are into. It is the type of stuff that I hope more games step back into. More stuff like SlayersX, pseudoregalia, corn kidz 64 & many more games like them because they actually feel like video games to me!
I always feel some whiplash when I hear Chibi-Robo music in the background of your videos James. I played Chibi so much that the music might as well be *my* life's theme music!
Btw, I played SWOLLEN TO BURSTING on your recommendation. It was clearly a very personal work by its creator, but I really enjoyed it. I hope they're doing well
BogoZone was a huge part of my teenage years! I used to play Lyle in Cube Sector all the time. I hope BogoZone continues to make great games for us!
Gosh! watching you gush over CORN KIDZ has convinced me to grab it. That and Pseudoregalia. Love that obscure stuff you dig up for the rest of us 💖
THANK YOU for making such great videos!!!!
Had Dredge and Psedoregalia already under my radar, good to see other suggestions outside of the common AAA circle so thank you!
yooo i loved the last one Rad Games just caught up on ur stuff and watched it recently always had a soft spot for ur stuff Mr. Rad, its a good day
Nice to see Nanashi no Game get a shoutout in 2024! I had a lot of fun with it, so it's nice hearing you talk about it as well!
Happy ten years on youtube Nitrorad! Heres to 10 more! If thats what you want to do 8) definitely one of the best creators and reviewers on the internet :)
HELL YES THE YEAR DOESN’T START TILL THE RADDEST GAME VIDEO COMES OUT
amazing work as always, here’s to a great 2024!
Hey jsyk dude, if you ever still wanna do that bionicles video you mentioned a while back, I'd watch it. I don't know shit about bionicles (I was out of the age range when they released) but I love hearing people go on about their niche interests, and I love your video game videos so I'm sure I'd love that one/learn a lot too.
That being said, I downloaded Swollen to bursting and will give it a look later, thanks for the rec for all these great games. I love how 64/PS1 era graphics have now become a stylistic choice, much the same way 8 and 16 bit sprite work was in the early 2010s. It just makes me feel nostalgic is a good way, and is really fun to see people use that art style to it's full potential!
Hope you have a good month and that the cats are doing good. Congrats on the SuperEyepatch Wolf shout out earlier on!
Your silent Hill videos are some of the best on CZcams, i rewatch them time to time would be awesome if you re reviewed the entire series again
YES!! I was waiting for you to mention Rollin' Rascal! So looking forward to the Kickstarter opening up! Fingers crossed for a physical PS5 release!
When I got to #3 I was saying to myself "If Corn Kidz 64 isn't on here I think I am going to go insane" and then it was #1 and I popped OFF!!!! I love the game so much and while I wish it was a little bit less cryptic, everything else makes up for it. I need a Corn Kidz 2 SO BAD! I NEED A CORN KIDZ GAME WITH MORE WORLDS AND POWER UPS! There is SO MUCH they could explore with this game and I hope they make another one. THE MOVESET IS SO FUN
I remember being among the first to subscribe to your channel then I put you out there on Twitter. Went from 50 to 100 subs to 1,000's now 10 years later almost 400K man you have come a long way and I congratulate you on this!
Super Mario Wonder is really amazing tho, it has a lot of character and it's probably, one of the best 2D platforms ever made.
Happy to find new indie games I'm interested through James, Thanks dude!
Another year, another list of games that i need to put on my whislist so i can play them once i have money and they are on discount, can't wait to see what games you will be playing! :D
Corn Kidz 64, I knew you would talk about it at some point! Really loved that one! For some reason, I couldn't help but think about Canadian cartoons when I was playing it. I dunno, its style just really brought that to mind.
A lot more stuff I've seen before too, like B3313, I've been wanting to check that out for a while, as well as Pseudoregalia and Cavern of Dreams.
2023 was a great year! I'm very excited to see what 2024 holds for both gaming and your channel as well! God bless!
I am really happy to see your top 10 games videos even if they don't get much views. I get to know a lot of cool games ❤❤
A friend gifted me Corn Kidz recently really looking forward to playing it, also replayed Pseudoregalia recently very cool game.
This was a really fun video to watch thanks for all the recs & thanks for the upload
Love all the attention you give to indies, like the surprise i feel at what they attempt is cool
Nice video as always!!
Ah finally got yourself a steam deck, that is one of the most amazing things to have on hand and in general for gaming. One big recommendation for you since I know how platformers are for you and horror is The Upturned, I'm unsure if you have played it before or have heard but I overall recommend it due to its nature I think it hits your vibes as it can be scary, cute, fun and bizarre.
Happy to see you continuing to make these despite having second thoughts on top ten lists
Have been following your videos for a while, they always relax me, thank you for your work. Have you played Alan Wake 2? You are a survival horror fan after all, and plus Sam Lake wrote one of the most intriguing stories in any form of media, once again, thank you for your videos.
Great video. Have you thought of doing a series along the lines of “if you like [insert AAA game], then try these indies?” It would be a good way to try and get people who still like AAA games (like myself) into the indie space more.
