So much of this, especially the blue-screen flying around, reminds me of the video for David Hasselhoff's "Hooked on a Feeling".

The thing is few english listeners actually know enough german to get how silly the original Schikaneder libretto is to begin with.

@FirstLifeFan I agree, the lines are really catchy too. However, I find that sacrificing the Masonic storyline for a Great War setting was what makes this film somewhat confusing and lacking in logic.
That being said, if it were to adhere to the Masonic storyline it would just be compared to Bergman's.

What an unusual version of Mozart's Opus Magnum.....Well done! to all concerned !!...I still think that they should have let Liz Smith sing.

Rafael Borges I can't understand it in German. Papagano is perfect in any language.

The main reason he put things in German rather than Italian was because he was trying to bring opera to the masses--he probably wouldn't have had much of a problem with it being translated into other languages, so long as the translation was faithful and well-done. And this translation definitely fits that criteria.

Well, maybe the dialogues are better and stuff, but the sound of the music doesn't feel the same. I'm not saying the dialogues became poorer, but it's like playing Für Elise in a vibraphone. Sounds like playing with the wrong instrument.
Or maybe it's just because what remains to me when I watch the german Zauberflöte (as a brazilian-portuguese speaker) is just the *sound* of the language, not its meaning. ;)
