  • Thinking of upgrading the turbo on your MK8 GTI?
    Here is how we did it on our customer car MK8 GTI WR project using a Garrett PowerMax GT2260s.
    The process is overall very similar to the previous generation MK7 but there are a few distinct differences.
    The Garrett PowerMax GT2260S is available for purchase on our new website: www.gerspeed.com/products/gar...

    It’s wild how similar this is to the MK7 GTI, which is now a 9 year old platform, from when it first started.

    I also have the Garrett 2260s turbo on standby ready to be put into my car. I got to the part where everything was off beside the oil return line but my car is an Audi a3 8v Quattro so the AWD system made it impossible to loosen the oil return line. Do you have any ideas?

      The problem is almost always not having the correct length extensions, wobbles or adjustable ratchets in the correct length with the necessary leverage.

      You ideally want to get a complete set if you own these cars - they will more than likely come in handy again.
      M8, M10 and M12 are the most common ones.

    Does that 5-40 LM come with the VW 508/509 spec? I have only found that spec in 0-20 here in the US.

    • @gerspeed

      We run the heavier oil for two reasons - firstly we are located in a very warm climate (Texas) where the benefits of a zero weight cold oil are not of as much of an importance.
      Secondly we get the added benefits of thicker oil at op temps which is optimal for harsh operating condition and hard driving.
      If you are in colder climate, go with 0W40.
      People often tend to forget that the manufacturer picks the recommended engine oil based on the driving style of the average owner.

      @@gerspeed if you have some spare time, take a look at Porsche's torture test on the 508/509 oil. I planned on running a different oil in summer until I saw how that spec of oil held up to some terrible conditions in turbo motors. On another subject, do you know of a tuner that has the capability to offer a clutchless start to help mitigate the thrust washer issues on these motors? I have Unitronic's stage 3 stuff being installed this week and know they don't publicly offer it, but I am hopeful to find an option eventually.

    What power gains did you get from the 2260? Interesting that you made this upgrade considering how close to a is38 the pmax is and the mk8 gti turbo is slightly bigger than an is38

      Quite significant increase in power and definitely less hassle than the MK8 R Continental turbo swap.

      Both Dynos with intercooler, intake, catted DP, exhaust.

    What tune are you going to use for this bigger turbo? What would be the hp like?

    • @gerspeed
      @gerspeed  Před 6 měsíci

      We already custom tuned it with United Motorsport, almost breaking the 8 second 60-130 on completely stock fueling 93 octane. From what we can see, no OTS tune comes even close to that, especially considering the DSG is still stock. We are definitely around the 400-450WHP mark.

    been thinking about doing this. i dont want to void my warranty but do you think this is safe reliability wise???

    • @therues7071
      @therues7071 Před 6 měsíci +1

      I got one also, Just have not installed it yet. I Don't think this turbo is going to be pushing the upper limit of your motor. It isn't massive or anything and there were people running hybrid IS38 turbo's on the MK7 and 7.5 platform just fine. Every car will be different tho. For the most part I think it will be safe. Just don't go bouncing off the rev limiter in a parking lot for hours lol.

    • @gerspeed
      @gerspeed  Před 6 měsíci +1

      This can very well void your warranty. It’s the trade off for modifying the car and making more power. Garrett is an S-tier turbo manufacturer and the same brand as the factory turbo. What is more important is the tuner you decide to go with. We tune almost exclusively United Motorsport for those seeking maximum reliability, longevity and performance.

    What's up with these Gt2260 turbos? It seems to make 400whp/400wtq with ease and used on smaller engines 1.5-2.0L. It doesn't follow the garrett numbering system i am familiar with, such as a gt25 is going to make less power than a gt28 but spool earlier and a gt28 will make less power than a gt30 but it will spool quicker and a gt30 will make less power than a gt35 but it will spool earlier. If I followed the normal naming and numbering system for Garrett i would think the gt22 is a "smaller" turbo than the gt25 with less power potential, but it is not as evidenced by all of these 400+whp cars with the turbo. Someone please explain it?

    • @NerdGenius
      @NerdGenius Před 4 měsíci +1

      The size of the turbo has nothing to do with the flow of the turbo. The turbo flows more air as a pretty broad rpm range. The k03 was bigger than the is20 on the mk7 but the is20 flows more air. This turbo design was built to match the flow of the mqb head and internal exhaust manifold.

    • @dennisrobinson8008
      @dennisrobinson8008 Před 4 měsíci

      So the "size" of the turbo does fit the normal Garrett naming system for the "gt" turbo's and it's physically smaller than a g25 but flows more?@@NerdGenius

    • @NerdGenius
      @NerdGenius Před 4 měsíci +1

      I believe this entire line is a new marketing name if you look at the specs it has a larger compressor housing than majority of the turbos you listed. This turbo is also newer designed also.

      @@NerdGeniusThe ko3 is nowhere near the size of an is20 its significantly smaller. I'm pretty sure ko4 isnt even that big . The size difference between the mk6 and mk7 turbo size is in huge favor of the mk7.
