  • Thrifting has become so fashionable that the likelihood of scoring a win is so rare, that it has almost become a huge waste of time. Not to mention the fact that the stores have massively inflated the prices of most models.
In this video, I find a great option online, for a third of the retail price and show you how I make it good to go.
The Canon AE-1, a 1970 powerhouse! the best 35mm film camera for the money

Good aadvice. If only I knew how good I had it 8 or 9 years ago when I got back into film. To be fair, I've personally only had moderate success with thrift stores even then. My best avenues (outside of the internet) is flea markets (not hipstery ones), garage sales, and antique markets. I once got 5 canon A series bodies and lenses from an antique shop for $80

In high school a friend of mine had an Olympus OM-1 while I had a Canon FB-1. I eventually upgraded my camera to a Canon AE-1. I chose the AE-1 over the AT-1 because I wanted a camera where I could go fully manual and the AT-1 could not do that. My Dad wound up with my AE-1 and I switched to a Canon T70 which I still have. My T-70 is sitting in a camera bag along with four lenses (one is on the camera body), the original strap and a wide one, and the original manual, and some other items. I am going to look for the AE-1. The door was fine on it when put away but perhaps time will result in it breaking it if I try and open it now.

Thanks for the comment ! The AE-1 …. Great camera for sure. The T70, which be not owned but I have the t50 and love it.
At the end of the day …. The fact that you’re getting excited about film photography again is amazing , regardless of the tools you use ! I will say however ! The OM-1 is a masterpiece

@@robbellphoto The AE-1 and T70 were cameras I used many years ago. I haven't used a film camera since I finally went about 10 years or so ago when I felt that digital SLR cameras were about on par with 35mm film. The camera shop in the mall near me closed some years back. I have no idea where to buy 35mm film or have it processed.

so true. thanks to youtubers that do thrifting videos for ruining it all. bragging about deals and reselling them on ebay. thrift stores saw the videos and got smart.

I was thrifting years ago. My favorite F3 was found this way. You know ….. I’ve never found a decent lens in a thrift store , would be interested if anyone has found any gems ? Are their Leica , Carl Z or hex in those spots

I know exactly what you are saying, because I have been there. One avenue I do enjoy is Kodak cameras. You can get a hundred-year-old fold-out body for next to nothing and play around with 620 rolls from B&H. It's quite a challenge.

I have to admit that I have no idea why anyone would want to do this - go hunting for old gear. But I am thankful that someone has an interest in it, rather than relegating it to landfill. I have one Yashica film camera from the 1980's that has sentimental value, but otherwise, all modern gear that I love using. Good luck with your interest and thanks for sharing.

Wish the battery situation was better for the Yashica clan for sure

@@robbellphoto Recently I picked up about 15 cameras and assorted lenses for the grand total of around 80 bucks. Two very mint Zenits (TTL and 11), a Fujica AZ-1 in perfect working order, a mint Petri TTL, Canon QL 19, Minolta SR-T-101, the tiniest rangefinder Olympus XA, etc etc. I live about a half hour away from a proper city and here in DK there are tons of thrift shops. I'm sure it's harder to find bargains in Copenhagen, etc, where hipsters abound. lol
