All I see at the parks is everyone is staring at their phone.
Indeed.
That’s everyday everywhere.
One more reason not to go to Disney. I would want to be disconnected from the rest of the world when on vacation.
I truly believe Disney hates their "former" customer base. Their last gasp is to do the absolute least to spin and appear like they wanna change back to America is good and family is good. Just enough to get cash while staying woke. I dispair, because I have loved them so much
Kind of missed the mark there, Disney never cared about their "former" customer base, they only care about the people who will make them as much money as possible, nothing more. If you were will to pay... "oh $80/day isn't bad, oh $100/day isn't bad, $120/day isn't bad, oh it's only an extra $30/day to skip some lines, well except that ride $20 so we don't wait isn't bad"... those are the people who are making life miserable for the people who say "it is bad"
@@Mike__B I can agree to that too. They want the 1 percenter
@@Mike__BYou have no clue what you're talking about. None. Disney World USED to be reasonably priced. Very reasonably priced. The reason my father began taking us as kids was because it cost marginally more than a week at the shore. It waa NOT a non-stop money vacuum and MANY "perks" that now have to be paid through the nose for were just part of the price of admission. There was infinitely more value for, even adjusting for inflation, about 1/3 what they charge today. They wanted Disney to be available and affordable to everyone. Once upon a time.
I am old enough to remember the theme park experience before cell phones and before monetized line-cutting. Good times. Very relaxed, which is what you want in a vacation. And the lines MOVED.
Last time I was a DW cell phones didn’t exist. Was fine waiting in line and using a paper map. Back in the day you ordered food by talking to a real person. Oh God I sound like Lew W Ghost!
Midnight Buy Genie Plus
6:50 am get ready to make reservations for rides
7:00 AM start making reservations or buy your Lighting Lane
You must DO this every day of your vacation
We stopped going.
Disney’s failure will be Epic.
If you aren’t staying on property you can’t buy a lightning lane until 9AM..I’m already in the park by then, and I miss my window to purchase every single time
We last went in 2022 and within 10 minutes (7:10 am) the LL's were already at mid-afternoon times. I hate the whole system. We had to be glued to our phones all day. Oh, don't forget to buy a portable charger or your phone is dead by 2:00 pm because the tracking on Genie+ burns up the battery! We aren't going back anytime soon for this and other reasons. May try Universal next go around.
The last thing I want to do on vacation is be on my phone.
I was glued to my phone on the last Disney trip. You have to be!! As far as paper maps, my husband actually had a nasty exchange with a cast member when we dared to ask for a paper map (my child wanted for a keepsake). My husband was shocked at how rude the person was, it's so sad what has happened to Disney. Conversely, we went to Universal, had a great time, and I didn't have to be on my phone at all. We are pretty much done with Disney.
Then go to Alaska
I don't have a smartphone, so I guess Disney doesn't want my cash. Oh well.
If I didn't need one for work, I would've never gotten one.
used to leave my phone in my room, so I could disconnect. I hate the whole system.
When I did go to WDW it was so odd to me to look around just to see people staring at their phones. We all know about phone addiction, but it still floors me to pay thousands just to do what you do at home and miss what's going on around you.
Basically, Disney is the phoney (pun intended) rehab doctor that says, "Hey man, we'll get you off those drugs, but we need you to take these new ones first."
The one thing covid did was allow all the guests and disney to see what the lines looked like without any fast pass/lightning lanes and we all saw that it was so much better without them…everything moved so much faster for everyone…then they added genie+ and it proved how badly it slowed everyone down….making the experience more costly and less efficient for guests…adding to a lesser guest experience
I'm old. I don't want to use a phone to enjoy a park. I'm not sure I will ever go back.
I agree. I use my phone enough already. I would rather not be tied to it just to be able to ride things and order food. That's a big turn off for me
I absolutely can’t stand how everything requires phone in DL. I feel like I’m not immersed in my own vacation 😑
Coming from someone who has gone to the parks more times, then i can remember. I will tell you the usage of your phones outside of making a phone call or checking the time is an absolute travesty. The entire purpose of the Disney parks and the effort they went to, to place certain things around the park, was for guests to see them and appreciate them, but most of all to enjoy being there to create memories. You know how much of that is being done outside of taking a picture in front on the castle....none. Disney has got to get people off their phones when they enter the park. You want to make more money, start focusing on the experience, the price and wait times so more people are willing to go. Lastly there is nothing more frustrating then having a new ride that you go to these parks for. Only to get there on your vacation and not be able to ride it because Disney in their stupidity thought it would be a good idea to sell spots for new rides locking people out of going on them if they aren't great with their phones, want to be on their phones, or willing to pay extra for the ride...on their phone. For every guests that loses out on going on that ride to that system, I guarantee you're losing money from them. There is a reason Universal said no way are we doing that and, why they are constantly taking chunks of business from Disney.
Three (3) free paper fast passes a day would be a great remedy.
What do you mean they don’t know how to fix phone fatigue? It’s not rocket science
I absolutely hate how the Genie+, dinning reservations/orders work.
Before the app came about, I would just walk around and get inline for a ride or restaurant as I saw fit.
Now, everything has to be planned out in advance.
That is only fun if you are OCD, it is fairly stressful for everyone else. Having to meticulously plan every aspect of your time in the park.
Totally agree, same experience here. It's even more "fun" with a nonverbal child with autism that can't always stick to a strict schedule. Our last trip in 2022 was way more stressful than pre-Genie+ trips when you could just go with the flow of the day.
I think that's why I have no desire to go back. Because you can no longer do the parks without ridiculous planning. That was part of the magic of the whole experience.
Disney has definitely gone way over the line with phones. I will not visit WDW until there is a major overhaul or removal of Genie+ and Lightning Lane.
Exactly.
And the removal of virtual queues
Not gonna happen. There's too many guests that are more than willing to pay for these services regardless of cost. Disney has found a way to make up for merchandise sales without actually providing you a physical item.
@@dougconley I agree that it won’t happen. That just means I save a lot more money and will get my Disney fix by supporting small businesses that put out better quality Disney products at a better price.
I remember the days of having fun with no phones. You actually have a better time exploring the parks and having fun. I'm seeing more and more people with their face in their phones after they paid money to this park and they don't get the real experience that you can. You can be on your phone at home. Why would you go on vacation to be on your phone?
When I go skiing I use my phone to take pictures and check lineup times .. on a wesbite; NOT another app bloat.
Requiring smart phones just alienates overseas guests, the lower middle class, and the elderly. Grandparents shouldn't have less fun b/c they're not as tech-savvy as their grandkids.
It is also just a real joy killer for me. I use my phone enough outside of going to Disney.
Requiring cell phone interaction is the exact opposite of an immersive experience.
Universal planning: buy a ticket and show up. Check app if you want to mobile order or check a line time (which is on displays in some places)
Disney planning: pay hundreds for a logistics class on how to pack extra batteries for your phone after 3 months of micro managing your reservations, ride order, genie up charges, virtual queues, and lightning lanes...
Yep they ruined vacation time.
I want to not be on phone during my day more than needed- absolutely needed.
Also the mobile ordering feels really hard with food allergies who they encourage to talk to cast members to verify things. It makes it harder for food allergies to get food because the mobile ordering is propped up so much and the make the traditional ordering harder to encourage more mobile orders.
I refuse to use my phone in the park. It can be done with some planning ahead. I do not want to use the terrible Genie+ app while in the park. I like solely taking in the vibes of the park.
The last time I was in the park and walked up to order food. I was told I had to mobile order, yet there was no one in line and the cast member was standing there bored with nothing to do. The pickup was an hour from that time. Why? When policy overrides the common sense of customer service…there is a problem! I walked away. I won’t support mobile ordering.
I absolutely hate how much Disney has forced us to our phones. I used to go to the parks with my wife and put my phone in airplane mode so I could use the camera only and my wife wouldn't be glued to her phone checking messages or scrolling facebook. I'd have our fast passes set for the day and we'd go. Now I need my phone for ride times, and virtual queues, and to order food, and a bunch of other stuff. I pay a fortune to be submersed in the fantasy and wonder, not to stare at my phone some more
Having to install another piece of corporate spyware to use the park....... is not a plus.
This is one of many reasons of why I am done with Disney parks. Bad enough that I am being nickle and dimed, forced to wait in long lines but I also have to be glued to my phone in order to "maximize" the vacation that I paid $5,000+++ for. If you have never been and don't know any different then enjoy but I have enjoyed the parks in the "golden era" of paper fast passes and maps. It was spontaneous and glorious!
Disney used to be a place that you could escape the every day and live in a fantasy. It’s not that now it’s just an extension of the local State Fair and I. Hate it.
Virtual queuing worked best when you just got your "departure time" printed on a small piece of paper.
And if a restaurant requires me to order via an app rather than having paper menus that's the last time I will have visited that place. Same goes for paper maps, obviously.
Damn, I really start to hate tech...
I miss the physical ticket fast pass system. Vastly superior to the BS app based system.
The last time I was there. Most people were so busy looking at their phones that they didn't notice the line moved. A CM had to come over & say "please move forward"
No Phones! What's the point of paying all this money just to have to stare at your phone all day? Back in the day all we had was fast pass and that was good enough. No phone necessary.
I went to Disneyland last year with my friends. I’ve been to Disneyland multiple times as a kid. I know that park like the back of my hand. I even know the general flow of the crowds as the day goes on. But even then, I had to stay looking at my phone! You have to make sure you’re getting Lightning Lanes for the rides you want to go on, you have to check show times, parade times, order food, check ride wait times, etc!! It was exhausting!! I didn’t want to be on my phone, I wanted to enjoy the park!! And because we were forced to be on our phones all day, almost all of our batteries were dead by the end of the night which is bad for multiple reasons. When I go to the parks, I don’t want to be glued to the phone. I don’t want to be stressed, I don’t want to be worried, and I really don’t want to pay extra money for that experience. I’m really sick and tired of Disney.
I never bought Genie+ or Lightning Lane at Disneyland. Attendance was actually quite light. Disney has failed their guests. People who buy are suckered out of their money.
There needs a balance with the phone.
I think Joe Rohde said something along the line you can have fun anywhere so they need to offer more. You can be on your phone any where so why would you want to be on them in the park?
I live in FL and would go to DL, with out of state Family about every other year. That has all changed with the ridiculous prices they charge and the use of the damn phones. I don't go to a theme park to be on my damn phone. I have not been back since. However Universal is taking up the slack 🙂
Last I was at Disney was 2019 at Disneyland. It was way to much PHONE! GET RID OF IT ALL AND GO BACK TO THE PAPER FASTPASS SYSTEM! Either way it doesn't matter to my family any longer. We won't be back unless a regime change happens with the heads of Disney.
Disney’s app doesn’t even work. There’s major lag with updating the wait times. It’s worthless
Genie plus should be a bejeweled type game, so the moms will be happy😂
My brother was an engineer and his take on Disney World was that it was a machine and people are the subject of fluid mechanics, of the movement of fluid through the mechanism. With surge pricing the guest “become a commodity. In maximizing the extraction of value from park visitors, they become cattle in a meat factory.
We were at MK on 5/8. Stand by line, for Peter Pan was “45 minutes”. In reality, it was 25 minutes… and would have been WAY less without the Genie+ line. They let 6 stand by guests in for about 25-30 Genie+ guests.
Going to an amusement park shouldn’t be work. I’d much rather just go to a cool place with my family.
The amount of time required on the phones just to ensure you get on enough rides is ridiculous. It rings the magic. Another in a long list of reasons that we're done with Disney.
Pro Tip mobile checkout doesn't enforce resale restrictions for DVC discounts.
Cant fix phone fatigue? Theme parks are literally intuitive total environmental design and storytelling antithetical to phones. Stop ruining everything with phones
It's fascinating to me that Disney wants its Guests to be more immersed in their phones than in the "magic" that could surround them in the theme parks (if, in fact, they knew how to create magic anymore). That spoken ..Yes... I fully agree that they have gone WAY overboard on their "mobile technology" and the amount of time one needs to spend on their phones to get through a day at the park. I'm guessing this is not what Walt would have envisioned for his parks. Sad...and frustrating.
The whole phone thing to plan every minute, apart from the exorbitant cost, is one of the main reasons I'll likely never visit again. I remember relaxed, spontaneous visits in the past, and I'd like to keep those memories intact. Better yet, I can watch all the walkthrough and POV videos on my phone at home and have pretty much the same experience I would at the parks for no cost or waiting in line at all! 😉
I liked the 3 fast passes made on a computer before arrival. I have not and probably will never purchase Genie Plus. Members of my traveling party that have, had to stay all day at the park to get the rides they wanted. Also, a few times certain rides passes were gone by 10 am. So they paid for Genie and never got the ride they wanted. No problem with making a paying system out of passes. I remember E tickets and the books. Add in the numbers of rides that go down, I feel it is a waste of money to purchase Genie Plus.
We’ve been to DL and WDW 5 times in last 3 years and it’s so ridiculous now with the phones now. I believe they created a monster.
I'm in that narrow band who can still afford to go but openly acknowledge the prices are high and pushing my comfort zone. I still enjoy going to DL but we never have and never will purchase the app. I'm going ahead and comment that the [paid for] app is way to coerce guests to show they're a "good person" and loyal to the brand. They could make it $300 per and there will be those who are compelled to purchase it because they don't want to be thought of less than true fans. Call it what it is, another ticket and price of admission to experience something that was presumed a short while ago.
I think it should be a completely optional experience, and if they have things like the flash pass or whatever they call it at Disney, they should give people some other means to use it if they don't want to use their phone.
Disney Dollars were discontinued in 2016, but they will still accept them.
I don’t want to use my phone at the park. If I use it at all it’s to see wait times, take pictures, look at the gluten free menus (why is there so little to pick from), and answer emergency calls (which thankfully almost never happens). I don’t want my kids seeing me with my face buried in a phone.
Was at DL last year and hated how some restaurants made us mobile order. I couldn’t talk to someone about my allergies that way!
Come on now, you don't need your phone at all. I went to Disney World with my friend in Sept. 2022. We came all the way from Amsterdam (The Netherlands). I didn't book Genie Plus because it was just another cost tagged on. We didn't miss it at all! Wait times were fine, max. 45 min average. Tower of Terror was 5 min! Only thing we waited like 2 hours for was Rise of The Resistance, which is also fine by us! Waiting is part of theme parks, all you have to do is accept that and you'll have a great time!
Girlfriend and I complain about the phone usage just about every other weekend we go, and we are young people that have problems using technology outside of the parks. I can’t stand it
Before the policies and practices implemented by Disney, I used to leave my cell phone at hotel/vacation home so I wouldn’t be bothered with calls and emails from work. I’m on vacation. Now guests are forced to have a phone. The burden of costs are put on the guest by this and other policies. The forced micromanagement of one’s vacation is burdensome and kills ability to relax and enjoy your vacation. Iger has destroyed the park experience. Eisner had his faults but he did appreciate park guests and put efforts to bettering the guests experiences. Remember Magical Moments?
Forcing me to be on my phone all day on vacation sounds pretty dystopian. I'll pass on any destination that's going to foist that on me. Nope.
I’m the planner in my family and it’s a lot to try to optimize the number of rides you get to in a day. Not to mention the hours of research you need to do to learn how to navigate Genie+, ILL’s and virtual queues.
Yet, most of you STILL choose to give them money. I went to Disney World last year. Never again! I bought a one park pass for 4 days. I wanted to go to 2 parks one day(my last day of my trip). If i didn’t do this, I wouldn’t be able to go to Hollywood Studios(long story). Instead of charging me for one day with a multi pass charge, they charged me for all 4 days even though they knew I was leaving the next day.
Disney Dollars were discontinued quite a few years ago. I wanted to get some the last time I went and that is what they told me. Too bad, I really liked them and have quite a few of them as souvenirs.
Also, I don't use Genie+. Thank goodness that I have been there enough times that I don't feel the need to have to ride everything when I go. As a result, I typically only use my phone to order food and play Heads Up when standing in lines for rides. And I normally only ride rides that have lines that look to be reasonable when I pass by. I know that I am anomaly, but it does make Disneyland much more enjoyable for me if I am not tied to some digital leash telling me when I can and cannot ride rides or having my entire day revolving around a few rides that I have lightning lane passes for.
I am not paying a thousand dollars a day per person to have my face stuck in a phone and miss the joy on my child's face.
I can sit in my recliner at home and look at my phone.they need too try some special days a year with no distractions no lightning lanes or virtual queues just too see what happens.
They need to bring back the option to have your purchase sent to the front of the park. I miss not having to carry around my shit all day.
The worst thing is no photos on rides. Supposedly, there's some sort of thing that connects to your phone to see pics on rides but i couldn't get it to work. My 5yos fist roller coaster rides and i got nothing showing them.
You work to capture ppl's imaginations. Then direct them right back to their phones.
So...what happens if you don't own a phone????
My semi-antique rotary dial flip-phone is enough to keep me clear of Disney parks.
I have been a pass holder for about 6 years or so. Things have gotten so bad since COVID. Disney is completely soured. A line for everything! It is clear Disney doesn't like their APs.
There are still physical map kiosks at the entrances to the Disney World parks
I never had or will have a "smart phone" so basically it comes down to another reason that keeps me from considering on coming back, which for me was way before COVID
Recently, I went to Universal Studios and had to get an app for the digital map.
What if you lost your phone in the morning in Disneyland….your day is done….😂😂😂😂😂😂…and go home
I think that it TOTALLY SUCKS that Disney has forced its park goers to do everything from their phones. They are too focused looking at their phones to do anything that they DON'T pay attention to where they are walking causing issues.
I would never go to Disney world you can take a family of 4 to king’s island and eat inside even hit the water park for 500-1000$ no way and hell am I dropping that much on a theme park and if I did it would be universal studios
They turned the park into a very expensive geographically limited game of Pokémon go.
It's gone too far. If you are not a local who can enjoy the parks extremely casually. Going to the Disneyland Resort is a stressful chore. Myself and many others have basically boycotted all retail since Genie Plus and Individual Lightning Lane were launched. Too complicated, convoluted and shameless way to say they really only care about the money in your wallet.
I had fun at Disney without using my phone in 2022, but I'm not sure that would've been possible if there were more people in my party.
DL Parks and Disney Cruise Lines NEED TO BRING BACK PRINTED DAILY SCHEDULES rather than HIDE THE INFO ontheri convoluted APP!!!!
Maybe if my smartphone was more for convenience, I'd feel different. But my phone's mostly for work related stuff so it's not like I feel the need to be glued to it. Having to rely on my phone for my themepark trip sounds awful.
To be honest, I’ll say people in Disney theme parks are on their phone too much. Sure phones are good for ordering something if you don’t have time to stay or for a virtual reality experience, but parks are meant to be enjoyed not to be sitting around like a teen who doesn’t care about their parent.
Honestly, I’m on vacation. I try to avoid my phone at all costs.
I really dislike having to be on a phone on vacation. We don’t do genie+ nor LL. I refuse to pay for that. We’ve been going at less busy dates. We’re finishing out our APs by Nov, and won’t be back for a while. Lots of other places to visit starting next year.
The parks are now like the opening of Shaun of the Dead.
Keep in mind that some people can't survive a day without the phone
Limiting attractions to IP is too restricting in my opinion
I was talking to my girlfriend exactly about this the other day so annoying I find myself being on my phone way to much on that app instead of actually enjoying my surroundings it’s so annoying I hate it
I want to be able to go on vacation, leave my phone in pocket for emergencies only. I don't want to be tied down to an app to do everything. I'm on vacation to get away from technology, i work with it everyday, all day. The whole point of Disneyland's design was to make it feel like you're in another world. That's why there's few areas you can see outside of the park while you're within the park. I understand wait times, i understand the allure of a "fast lane". Especially for families that get to go once or twice every 20 years. But to make everything dependent on an app, surcharge every square foot of the park is outrageous.
Now, i believe there are ways to meet in the middle
Pre ordering food
Allowing coupons or discounts with app only purchases
Free merchandise delivery to your room while you're at the park
Ride reservations
But expecting guests to be on their phone the entire time is unacceptable. In my opinion.
We are going in September, and we are NOT buying Genie+. The only things we will be on the phone for are virtual queues for two rides and maybe mobile ordering.
Mobs 4 genie +
Mobs 4 rides
Mobs 4 food/ drink orders
Too much mobs/ mobile uses
I just refuse. I need my vacation bubble. I mobile order at only one quick service and get in the virtual queue at 7a each day. That's it.
Not true about paper maps. They have them at the enterence of all parks. It may be harder to find than before but they still have them. This is coming from an annual passholder myself.
I agree the Imaginary Story is truly the best thing on Disney+. Behind the Attraction is also really good.
They should remove the Phone App
I truly miss Disney in the 1990s.
I prefer Disneyland with Splash Mountain and without Geni plus and mobile orders.
No phone please I’m on vacation
From the same mentality which brought you self checkout. No thank you.
