I know I'm late, but if youre serious abiut playing the piece, make sure that you use hand rotations. It is an étude about hand rotations after all. Many people(my past self included) don't use it which leads to their hand tensing up while playing it at speed. Rotation also makes the piece sound clearer and of course, what's the point of learning an étude If you don't use the technique it's supposed to develop.(No matter how great an étude may sound, it's still an étude and should therefore be approached like one as well.)

So I'm having piano lessons for almost a decade but half a year ago, I still couldn't play anything impressive. Maybe because I got a decent piano like a year ago and had a really bad teacher at the beginning Then I saw this video and got inspired to approach the piece. I always wanted to play it anyway. It took me a month and a half to learn the first page and I was totally blown away that I can play the first page but I stopped there. But It inspired me to try other pieces and now a few months later, I can play the first Ballade by Chopin a few pieces by liszt and more from Chopin thanks to my teacher. I made and still making incredible fast progress. So thanks for uploading and inspiring me

Same, except I’ve had lessons for about nine years total now, and it was my own fault mostly since I never liked practicing as a kid. But I was mostly learning about sheet music and notes and not much about music theory. I went with another teacher who still is teaching me music theory and singing. I started to go back to sheet music after I watched the anime “Your Lie in April” (which actually had this song in it). It was hard at first since I always struggled with note reading, but as I kept learning new things about music theory, I started to apply what I learned from her to find patterns and shortcuts.

Thank you times a million. What you did at around 2:20, just playing the chromatic with the right, while also playing the left hand, that gave me the ah-ha moment I needed to get over that bit. Once I could play it just accenting the chromatic it became a lot easier to play the full right hand progression alongside the left's rhythm. I appreciate you :)

I really enjoyed that. I'm 64 years old and am working on this piece for the first time. I've been at it for 3 weeks and have made fair progress. Looking back to my first week on the piece, I wish that I had concentrated almost exclusively on the "twisty arpeggio" parts. Most of the chromatically descending broken figures are easier, though they certainly take some unexpected turns. Best wishes to ALL who give this piece a try. Once you can start to get through it - even at a slow tempo, it's fun.

I stopped practising forever, heard it earlier this week, got all excited because I was like if I can play Rachmaninoff's prelude in C# minor I can play this right??? Spent hours working on it getting nowhere, gave up for a few days and just went back to it today 😂 I didn't even notice the chromatic pattern until I saw your video so that helps! Swedishnbkongu the way Beethoven wrote, especially for piano, lends itself really well to this style of analysis. Moonlight movement 3 is essentially arpeggios with an alternating left hand figure which makes it much easier to process. Not EASY, but easier to analyze than this amalgamation of notes
I'm in the process of learning this song (piece) and I find it helpful to recognize patterns and play it slowly for a while not messing up to build up the muscle memory, and for the right hand, for me I use my thumb for the lower part, and my ring finger and middle finger for the chromatic scale part, always rotating my wrist, then I play it a bit faster, and eventually the rotating will get smaller and you can play it faster. It took me about a week and a half, and I can almost play it at full speed, but I'm getting faster.
Im currently in basically the same position (about 6 years instead of 10 though), thanks for pointing out that pattern though, that's really helpful. I first heard this piece in Your Lie in April and I've wanted to learn it ever since. Asked my teacher for the sheet music, so wish me luck!

This is a miserably tough work to learn: so much so that Horowitz himself said that he had trouble with it, which may be why he never played it in concert after 1945. But if you keep working with it, eventually the pieces will fall into place.
This was more funny than instructional, especially the scale at the end 😂 I was exactly like you. If you practice it very slow you get the hang of it. At first I was like „what is this shit“. Took me about 15-30 min to learn and memorize a few bars ( and by that I just mean zo play it slow) and when I reached about 60-70% of the song even when I learn a new complex melody of it, it starts making sense to me very fast, I can even memorize it very fast without practicing it that much. At some parts my hands just started playing what it was even though I just read the start of that bar Even though its hard and sounds complex, it has just a bunch of structures and one which always repeats I just came back to it once in a while just like you and now I have like 2 pages to learn left and the rest is...practice... countless hours of more practice...

I stopped piano for 5 years and jumped back in playing this very piece, not realising it was one of the most difficult pieces out there (dumb. I know). I wanted a challenge, but jeez... Still. I have a tip , every time that im learning a new piece first i have to study the piece i have to prepare myself mentally first and i dont touch the piano , i takes like 2 day but it definitely works
You've been playing for a decade with nothing serious? Trying out bits and pieces of harder pieces will help you build more technical ability needed for monsters like Winter Wind. What I do is mess around with things like Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and some others just to test my skill and have those pieces help build my skill even more. I believe that if you start learning excerpts of pieces like you have in this video, but more frequently, you could be able to play some more crazy pieces like I have learned, and I've only been playing for about a year less than you. Make your ambitions goals and do all that you must to achieve them, you got this!
hehe, true ;) I was pretty good at piano when I was about 15 (last year of music school) but I never loved the piano and played it only technically with no feelings just to pass the piano exams. Years later, for some odd reason, the anime “Your lie in April” really spoke to me and, for the first time in my life, I realized that piano can be FUN - it doesn’t have to be torturous and painful. Sadly, the damage was already done, and it took me a while to find peace with the piano and how I viewed it in my childhood. I think I’m ready for it now as finally I have a genuine love in my heart for piano and music. In a couple days I get to start anew but this time with my hands following my heart. I’m excited!!! ^__^
A simple-ish song you could learn to practice adding feeling to is the Prelude in C Major from Bach’s first volume of the Well-Tempered Clavier. Bach always had emotion when playing, so by adding dynamic shading and expressive articulations, you can really reflect a story with the song. If you are interested, I can always send you my suggestions of how I play it if you’d like, or study how other performers play the piece. I have no doubt you’ll be able to find your emotions in music! ^w^
Have you checked out Paul Barton's tutorial on this etude? It's fantastic with a breakdown of stages to study. The exercises are awesome to develop fingers 3 4 5 in the RH building to the actual song and I think it's good for any skill level.
Great video! Nevertheless, it must be clarified that, in order to play this etude, the methods here proposed will work for someone who already has formidable technique and experience; meaning someone who already has strong and developed fingers, if you have feeble fingers this etude will be tough. So have that in mind before you decide to tackle this etude.
You probably know by now seeing that the video is 3 years old but the patterns aren’t random. It’s an alternation between an A minor chord and the chromatic scale. Edit: ok I just watched the rest of the video u seem to already know
I gave up leaning this piece after SO much practice solely because of the arpeggio part that comes after this part. This video was amazing and made me want to pick it back up again 😅😂 I started learning op 10 no 5 (black key) a couple of months ago and it’s much easier (and tbh more fun)
Some exercises to recommend? I want to improve but I dont know how to do it, the 2 pieces I’ve learnt is Vals op 69 no 1 (chopin) and Melodie op 47 I think it is by Grieg

But if you're talking about la campanella specifically, I was recommended to practice the chromatic scale, and octaves, both hands at the same time, both going up and separate ways. Its also recommended to play something else of the composer before going to la campanella to get the feel of the composer and understand how the piece is played out

You could be more feirce when you play the chromatic and A minor chord intertwined into a menace part. In the video it sounds to light and happy when you play that part, think of it as a surprise.

the Am (A minor) chord like C E A, A C E and E A C.
and then add the thingy F,E,Eb,D,Db,C,Cb and so on

I have a tip , every time that im learning a new piece first i have to study the piece i have to prepare myself mentally first and i dont touch the piano , i takes like 2 day but it definitely works
You've been playing for a decade with nothing serious? Trying out bits and pieces of harder pieces will help you build more technical ability needed for monsters like Winter Wind. What I do is mess around with things like Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and some others just to test my skill and have those pieces help build my skill even more. I believe that if you start learning excerpts of pieces like you have in this video, but more frequently, you could be able to play some more crazy pieces like I have learned, and I've only been playing for about a year less than you. Make your ambitions goals and do all that you must to achieve them, you got this!
hehe, true ;) I was pretty good at piano when I was about 15 (last year of music school) but I never loved the piano and played it only technically with no feelings just to pass the piano exams. Years later, for some odd reason, the anime “Your lie in April” really spoke to me and, for the first time in my life, I realized that piano can be FUN - it doesn’t have to be torturous and painful. Sadly, the damage was already done, and it took me a while to find peace with the piano and how I viewed it in my childhood. I think I’m ready for it now as finally I have a genuine love in my heart for piano and music. In a couple days I get to start anew but this time with my hands following my heart. I’m excited!!! ^__^
A simple-ish song you could learn to practice adding feeling to is the Prelude in C Major from Bach’s first volume of the Well-Tempered Clavier. Bach always had emotion when playing, so by adding dynamic shading and expressive articulations, you can really reflect a story with the song. If you are interested, I can always send you my suggestions of how I play it if you’d like, or study how other performers play the piece. I have no doubt you’ll be able to find your emotions in music! ^w^

Have you checked out Paul Barton's tutorial on this etude? It's fantastic with a breakdown of stages to study. The exercises are awesome to develop fingers 3 4 5 in the RH building to the actual song and I think it's good for any skill level.

Nevertheless, it must be clarified that, in order to play this etude, the methods here proposed will work for someone who already has formidable technique and experience; meaning someone who already has strong and developed fingers, if you have feeble fingers this etude will be tough. So have that in mind before you decide to tackle this etude.

You probably know by now seeing that the video is 3 years old but the patterns aren’t random. It’s an alternation between an A minor chord and the chromatic scale.

I gave up leaning this piece after SO much practice solely because of the arpeggio part that comes after this part. This video was amazing and made me want to pick it back up again 😅😂 I started learning op 10 no 5 (black key) a couple of months ago and it’s much easier (and tbh more fun)

As someone who is self thought on the piano and is grade 1, and started to learn La Campanella just cause, ye i can feel your pain
Some exercises to recommend? I want to improve but I dont know how to do it, the 2 pieces I’ve learnt is Vals op 69 no 1 (chopin) and Melodie op 47 I think it is by Grieg
@@merlu8578 I usually jump the gun and go straight to the piece. But if you're talking about la campanella specifically, I was recommended to practice the chromatic scale, and octaves, both hands at the same time, both going up and separate ways. Its also recommended to play something else of the composer before going to la campanella to get the feel of the composer and understand how the piece is played out

You could be more feirce when you play the chromatic and A minor chord intertwined into a menace part. In the video it sounds to light and happy when you play that part, think of it as a surprise.
