  • Sabai grass, also known as 'Babuii' or 'Bobai Ghaso' locally, is popularly used for making ropes due to its sturdiness. Women in Odisha and its surrounding regions have been involved in this occupation for a while. However, their financial viability was not as sustainable as they were unaware of the more advanced and effective ways of utilizing Sabai grass. To address this, they signed up for the artisan residency program organised by Tata Steel Foundation in Jamshedpur. Here, they learned new techniques to make handicrafts and other utilities from Sabai grass, which enabled them to become skilled artisans. With expert training and business skills, they have now paved their way to financial independence by selling their crafts for significant profits.
Watch the video to learn more about their experience at the residency and how it transformed their lives.
