great video. I never seen a thorough description like this. Now I know what is what in my yard. Half my front yard is always in shade because of a neighbor's large tree and now I know it's fine fescue as it folds over and the other half or yard is all sun all day and it's mostly kbg and rye. it was terribly hot this summer and the fescue survived with all the shade it gets but the other half needs to be re-seeded and now I know what's what...great job!
I live in the southern piedmont area of NC. I have been attempting to reestablish my lawn with cool season TTTF. It has been a trying experience. Almost all parts are influenced by some degrees of shade. I have tried several brands of turf seeds like Pennington Rebels TTTF in both full sun and dense shade mixes, Scotts sun and shade mix, Defiance XRE TTTF, FIVE STAR TTTF. Our soil is a clay sand with gravel mixture. Each seeding was preceeded with plug aeration, seed, fertilizer followed with some form of raking and irrigation. It's been a challenging. Of the mixes creeping red and Chewings have been the fine fescue seed and in most areas have survived better than the TTTF's in both shaded and sunny areas.
Josh - First off, I wanted to sincerely thank you for an absolutely superb overview of the cool grass types. I was looking for something I could send to my son - a first time home owner - about lawn types. And yours was perfect. Hats off to you! There was one thing I wanted to comment on when you spoke about th 90:10 mixture of tall fescue and KBG. My understanding is that when figures are quoted like that, it's based on weight and not seed count. And because tall fescue is much larger and heavier, that 90:10 mixture actually works out closer to a 50:50 mixture by seed count. I learned this when I ordered just such a mixture from a highly regarded premium seed supplier. And I must say that the TF/KBG mix has been fantastic, offering the best qualities of the two types of grass (i.e. hardiness and rhizomatic growth).
Hi, can you tell where did you ordered your seed from please? Im on the same boat. Just bought a house and looking to start the lawn from scratch with a quality seed for better results. Previous owners had carpet for low maintenance. Thank you
I live in PA and most of my yard is kbg. I’m not a fan of it because of how high maintenance it is. We had a few weeks for high temps and no rain, and my yard died. If you don’t water it often, it really struggles. My local plant nursery really recommended perennial rye, so I might switch to that sometime. Great video tho. Very helpful!
Thank you. You video is informative for me. I just laid new sod yesterday of tall fescue and overseeded. We will see. I'm in zone 7a. It's mid fall. Temps in the 70s. A little rain. I have never done this before. So we will see!
Tall fescue becomes invasive. It grows in thick clumps but is uneven with the other grass surface. I also noticed that the only other grass to be annoying is the fine fescue. This is not only slippery when wet, but it grows in clumps and seems to be the only grass to penetrate into tall fescue clumps
I am still a fan of Ky-31 overseeded every other year. In alternate years I overseed with a blend of other varieties. I have gotten a lawn that is super tough and can get by with 2x feedings per year and gets by pretty well on natural rainfall. It also seems to control weeds very well on its own kept mown at 3.5 inches.I love Ky-31's deep root system too.
@@CrazyLinguiniLegs Agreed, if you are like me and want a tough and low maintenance lawn that gets by fine on natural rain it is probably your choice. Not that hard to do an annual overseed. I am on hard clay and that deep root system really seems to do well.
I wonder what kind of grass I have? because its grown into areas of sand that never had grass before, if I throw 100lbs of dirt to fill a low spot then suddenly its covered in grass a few weeks later. It doesn't really burn in the summer unless I mow it too low, and it stays somewhat green in the winter ( Til it snows that is ) I've also NEVER fertilized it once in the last 30 years, never seeded it ever, and my yard is so compacted you cant stick a screw driver in the ground, the dirt might as well be concrete its hard as a rock. I also Know for sure its not blue grass because next door neighbor has that and you can see the color difference, mine is more lime green. And I should mention it is both in the sun and in the shade, and growing on rocks and sand and the driveway... and the tree roots.. Its everywhere really

I have mostly a KBG lawn. Under some flowering crab apples the lawn is very thin. Could I plant fine fescue or what might you recommend that would blend in well, but still grow?
I would try some of the new turf type tall fescues. Many of the newer stuff is finer bladed that matches with KBG and is shade tolerant. It also holds up better under foot traffic than fine fescues. There is also a very good shade tolerant blend called Scottish Links by Jacklin Seed. They are all different kinds of fine fescues but are tougher and more shade tolerant than what you’d find at the big box stores. Send me a PM with your address and I’ll send you a couple of my grass seed blends for free. You can try them out in the spring and see what works best.
Yes, a guy in my neighborhood has zoysia growing in his lawn. It does hold up better in the heat however his lawn is a tan color until about mid May because it takes longer to come out of dormancy. If you live in southern Ohio, or in the upper parts of the transition zone I bet you could pull it off, if you can get a cold tolerant type.
This is a good video but Tall Fescue only holds good against dog damage when it is cool. It does not hold up good to dog damage in the Summer at all!!!
Man i hope my bluegrass chokes out weeds. I tilled 3/4 of my yard and used round up a week before then rain came and brought weeds and then i seeded since we are close to frost time. Hoping the seeds germinate and choke out these damn aggressive weeds.
Kentucky bluegrass or perennial ryegrass is the only consistent grass to grow for lawns and are from europe. Fescue might be a native plant to minnesota but it is not a LAWN TYPE. Hence why before Europeans arrived, there was no such thing as a LAWN
It is depend on personal reference. I had Kentucky Blue grass and it is expensive to maintain. I went with Turf type tall fescue and non regret! Whatever you like it, go ahead. After all, it is just lawn.

K31 pros: deep roots, less watering, less fertilizing; cons: not self-repairing and texture not as smooth as KBG
