I first went to AT just after the log flume opened, there wasn’t much there then but I loved it. I remember enjoying the dancing fountains too and seeing people dressed up in Victorian clothing walking around the gardens.
Wow, excellent work I have so many memories of this place going back to my early years im just a little older than corkscrew. Didn't know kirk opened the monorail. I have a memory we were at the park once when spit the dog and bob were recording but I don't think it was the gameshow as spit wasn't in that according to some Internet articles. But my cousin swears he saw a clip on CZcams and his dad walks by in a background shot with ice creams meaning we were just of shot somewhere on a bench, and I think it was a year I was sad as I was still not big enough for corkscrew. (I'll subscribe I watched your 90s vid and blackpool stuff great work, and different enough to other theme park youtubers)
Fantastic video, it was the second half of the 80s I had my first visit. Loved the Corkscrew, the look of it to my 15 years old self was intimating but it was great. I had completely forgotten about the 1001 Night's, I was a fan of those flying carpet rides & that was a good one.
Plenty of memories from the 80's Towers street was built in 1986 prior to that the entrance was just the kiosks and at the beginning o do the Decade there wasn't even that, used to love visiting AT in both the 80's and 90's even I've not been for a good few years still like to see what's happening at the park, great videos brought back a lot of memories 😊
First went to Alton Towers in the mid 80s and fell in love with it. I remember the rapids opening and how much more exciting it was compared to the old flume rides. I remember being gutted that I'd missed seeing Captain Kirk open the monorail. As a kid Doom and sons was super spooky.
Looking forward to following more in this series. I also heard somewhere that it was supposed to be William shatner and george takei qt the monorail opening but that he got lost 🤣🤣🤣
I remember I was bullied at school when I was 8. My family took to alton the week before back to school as a treat. They asked me to take a school friend. I didn't have any. So my Grandad had to come on all the kids rides with me. I was only small. I'm still small now at 5ft but I really wanted to go on corkscrew and cried when I couldn't. But he came on all the others with me that needed an adult. Loved the Swan boats and the river ride. The monorail was boring compared to BPB. My worst memory is ALL THE WALKING at that age and just wanting rides like BPB.
Loved this mate, you said though Madness performed the song Time there that was Yesterday's Men lol You said many of you may not know William Shatner opened Monorail-thought tha twas just in pop culture been shown/said soo many times over the years! I think the 80's really upped it a notch with theme/water parks due to technology-where in England you from I'm in Kent between Dartford/Bexley 😎
@@coaster_dad From your accent knew you were Scottish-but didn't know if you had stayed in that part of UK or not! I love Edinburgh, been there many times over the years-was only on Homes Under the Hammer over a montha go. Did you watch it?? Looking forward to part 2, could you do the same for Thorpe Park as well please? 😀
@mikekaraoke I didn’t see homes under the hammer. And I’ll add Thorpe Park to my list, I’m in Florida right now filming about 20 vids so I’ll be a few months but I’ll get to it 😀
@r_dad Fair enough, you will be able to find it on catch-up anyway! Thanks mate-no probs sure the video will be worth the wait 🤘🏻 In Florida filming 20 videos eh-blimey! You forgot to mention in your video about other attractions like: Rupert Bear Magic Show-Talbot Centre / Festival Park from 1980-1986! Also:The Planetarium in area-The Towers mid 1970s to 1987. The Thunderbirds, along with Space 1999, came to Alton Towers in 1982 and appeared in an exhibition at the end of Talbot Street. The exhibition remained at Alton Towers until 1990. + The Aquarium that remained in the park until the end of 1994 when it was replaced first by shops and later the Pirates Quest Arcade. As you said which other attractions came later on but not them ones beforehand 😀
I went from 1982 every year till 1989.. I loved dino land which was on the site of the black hole, I always thought the alpine toboggan was removed because it was so dangerous. The pirate ship used to swing higher although maybe that was because I was a child watching it back then. Cine 180 was good they used to ask you to stand on the line at the front and only the bravest did that, and most fell over. Great times and the reason I am still a thoosie to this day..
A bit of extra info, I hope it's useful: Although Alton Towers claims Corkscrew was the first of its kind in Europe, that's not true. The previous year, an identical model opened in 1979 at the Annakrimes fair in Düren, Germany. It proved impractical for travelling was immediately sold to Traumlandpark (now Movie Park Germany), where it opened later that year Meanwhile Space 1999 was a tie in with the Gerry Anderson TV show of the same name. The displays were all props and puppets from the show Finally, the park didn't buy the Mouse from Vekoma - it was bought second hand from an Austrian showman who had been operating it at Wiener Prater
The Black hole was my favourite as a kid, I remember lapping it.
Nice 😀

Much though I love the Wickerman I do miss the log flume
Just subbed but loving your coverage of the UK parks. Great presentation style and loads of information I didn’t know about. Keep up the videos mate!
Thank you very much 🙏

Thank you. Glad you enjoyed. And glad it brought back memories 😀
Love the video really interesting how many rides have left alton towers I didn't even know about 90%of them
Glad you enjoyed. The rest of the series will be out in the next couple of weeks 😀

Yeah 1001 nights looked massive. I totally forgot I got on corkscrew until I found the ride photo 😂
@coaster_dad I miss it but it was getting passed its best. I remember it fondly.

Great video & concept Chris is right lad, already looking forward to the Blackpool one haha!
There’s a missippi boat ride at Disney in Paris

Aw man missing Kirk sucks!
Looking forward to following more in this series.
I also heard somewhere that it was supposed to be William shatner and george takei qt the monorail opening but that he got lost 🤣🤣🤣
Ha ha. He was too busy parking the enterprise 😂
My dad was working on that day when skyride stop he was one the Rescue team members and he in newspapers
Awesome. Your dad is famous 😀 that must have been a tough job that day!
Never know the carpark was so far away. Just remember having to walk it during the pandemic cause they couldn’t social distance the stations
Yeah it’s some walk 😂

Ha ha. I still hate the walking now. It’s a great park but it’s so spaced out. And then BP is so compact it’s easy to get from ride to ride.

Blimey sounds like I missed a lot 😂 to be fair there were a number of things before 1980 like the planetarium and I didn't include those 😁
Remember hold tight and it’s giant snakes and ladders board.
great upload how i miss the 80s park ....
It was a great decade. So was the 90s. That vid is out on Thursday 😀
@@coaster_dad ohh wow the 90s there was so magic cant wait to see the video
@31wozza yeah it was a cracking decade for sure! 😀
Came here after watching the Blackpool series 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed. After Towers there is also Thorpe Park. And I’m currently deciding which park to do next 😀
The Communards music video for 'Don't leave me this way' was performed in the towers 1986
Oh. Thanks for sharing. I obviously missed that one 🙈
Just saw you in line at Tron. Just subbed
Aww thank you. In line for round two just now 😂 hope you enjoyed!
its strange to watch a pre-Nemesis ad without the iconic alton towers theme
Yeah it’s weird to think that wasn’t always the theme huh 🤷♂️

Ah good to know. Thanks for the info 😀
Is that the late Steve Wright doing the voiceover at the end of the 1989 tv advert?
Good question. I’m not sure 🤔
Sounds like him, but I wasn’t sure either!
£3.99 😂😂😂
Can we have that back please? 😂
