  • Today, we're along CSX tracks on the former Baltimore & Ohio line from Cincinnati to Lima.
We'll start off in Glendale, take a look around at one of the best railfan sites in the area.
Head north to Dayton and check out the Great Miami River Railroad bridge and learn a little bit about the Union Station that used to be in town.
Lastly, we head to Sidney and take a look at the Big Four Concrete bridge.
The first train we'll see is Q351.
It starts at Barr Yard in Chicago and makes its way south, only stopping to work the yard Garrett, Indiana, which is north of Ft. Wayne.
Glendale has signals in both directions.
There is plenty of parking and some benches set up to enjoy the passing trains.
This is an morning or early afternoon spot for photography.
The sun will shine nicely on the side of the trains from the east.
The former Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton Railroad Depot was built in 1880.
It's kept up nicely by the the Glendale Heritage Preservation.
A museum is inside the depot which was built to replace the original 1854 wooden structure which was leveled by fire.
The Village of Glendale and volunteers spent tens of thousands of dollars and thousands of man-hours to restore the depot.
It opened as the Glendale Heritage Preservation Museum in May of 1997.
    The next train is Q561.
It starts in Selkirk, New York and finishes up at Queensgate Yard in Cincinnati, but not before working several other yards along the way.
The Baltimore & Ohio Lima line was acquired when the B&O purchased and subsequently merged the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton RR in 1917.
It heads north to Toledo and Detroit.
It also offers access to eastern cities with a turn at Sidney and again in Deshler.
The Village of Glendale is a quiet zone.
The work toward a Quiet Zone began in 2017.
The Village worked closely with the Ohio Rail Development Commission, as well as CSX Transportation to establish the 11th Quiet Zone in Ohio and second one in Hamilton County.
A Quiet Zone is a designated area where trains are not permitted to routinely sound their horns while passing rail crossings.
There are two grade crossings; one at Sharon Avenue and south of there at Oak Avenue.
Engineers are only allowed to sound their horns under certain circumstances, including when passing another train or in the event of a possible emergency, say someone's on the tracks or maybe too close.
There are strict safety requirements in order to establish a Quiet Zone.
The village installed "quad gates" at each of its intersections.
"Quad gates" have twice the gates as a standard crossing, blocking traffic on both sides of the road for a passing train.
There are also magnetic sensors installed alongside the rails at each crossing.
These sensors notify the engineer of an oncoming train, as well as the computer operated gates, that an obstruction may be present on the track.
The fencing required by CSX changed the configuration of the parking lot and closed the pedestrian crossing near the Depot Museum.
There is a defect detector about two miles south of here in Woodlawn.
So, if you have a scanner you can get a heads-up on approaching northbound trains.
You can also usually pick up another defect detector about 12 miles from here, north of Hamilton at New River Junction.
The last train in Glendale is Q556, a daily that starts in Queensgate Yard and makes its way Collinwood Yard in Cleveland.
Along the way it stops to work New River, Ohio which is north of Columbus.
I went to Dayton and planned on setting up at the CSX Great Miami River Bridge.
I checked the signal west of the bridge and saw a medium clear at MC Cabin.
There used to be Union Station in Dayton, but sadly has been torn down.
Built in 1900, it was called "Tower Depot," because of its seven-story clock tower.
In 1931 the station opened an elevated platform to alleviate congestion between trains, streetcars and automobiles.
Lastly, Sidney is the junction between the north-south Toledo sub and the wast-west Indianapolis line.
Here we see train Q217. It starts in Greenwich Yard, in Philadelphia to Osborn Yard in Louisville, Kentucky.
It also works Twin Oaks in Pennsylvania and Cumberland, Maryland and runs through Marion, Ohio.
I've got two other trips in the works.
I went to Knoxville, Tennessee to get a look at Norfolk Southern's Sevier Yard.
I also am trying to put together a video on Seymour, Indiana and the CSX and Louisville & Indiana intersection.
I'm still hoping to follow a train from Louisville to Cincinnati or vice versa, so feel free to comment if you know a good time on the weekend to make that happen.
As always, please let me know where you like to railfan and where you think I should stop next.
Until our next trip, have a great day.

When I was a boy I de-trained twice at Dayton Union Station from the National Limited before it was discontinued in 1979. I have always wanted to see what remains of the tracks at the site of the station, and this drone footage has finally done that. I am fascinated with Dayton's rail history.

I think sometimes if the signals light up, even though there's no train in the block, it could be that it's because the dispatcher has set up a route. Thinking out loud too :). Loved the video! I remember the CSX line there in Dayton having my favorite B&O signals.

I have lived and worked next to the B&O tracks through the Dayton area my entire life. Super cool seeing it from the air for the first time! The number of factories, foundries, and paper mills that aren't there anymore makes it almost surprising the railroad is still around! Thanks for the cool video.

Very very nice presentation. A personal note however. The no horn ordinance in Glendale did require the added safety features, including the removal of the pedestrian only crossing as well as a the original stone marker just a foot or two from that spot. C14 embedded on one side. T181 on the other, depicting how many miles to both Cincinnati and Toledo. Next to it sat 2 benches. I really miss being able to sit there, no line of sight obstructions in either direction, no need for a scanner or really anything techno and just wait an afternoon away for a train to pass by and wave

During the Civil War, Morgan's raiders captured Glendale's station and sent telegraphs to the Union army in Cincinnati that Morgan was about to capture Hamilton. It's ironic to see a bridge that's well known in Philadelphia have a twin bridge in Ohio. I say that because the tan colored bridge, with multiple arches over a single arch, is a former railroad bridge in Philadelphia. Based on Google, the bridge opened in 1918. Going over freight tracks, Schuykill Expressway (I-76), Schuykill River, Main Street in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia, and the tracks of the current Septa Norristown Regional Rail Line. The Pennsylvania Railroad was the earliest train that ran on this bridge. Years later, Septa had bought the Pennsylvania & Reading Railroads and put together to make the Regional Rail System and given R#s. In this case, R6 line ran from Norristown to Ivy Ridge through Manayunk, Center City Philadelphia, Bala Cynwyd, over the bridge, ending in Ivy Ridge. As of the early 1980s or 1990s, no train service crossed the bridge. It is now a bike trail. Sorry I don't have photos, however, google Manayunk bridge. You'll see the resemblance.

  • @Alcochaser
    @Alcochaser Před 3 lety

First, if your looking to catch a train going from Louisville to Cincinnati, via the L&I and the B&O, you will need to start at Louisville, preferably early. The line is used as a directional relief valve for the LCL line you have previously videoed. Id wait near Papa John's stadium and wait for a long CSX train to head up to to the LIRC with DPUs. If it's got local power, it's the Nabb job, that switches the remaining B&O tracks around Jeffersonville, Yes there still is a bit of ex B&O trackage left there. There is one CSX pair each way between Indy and Louisville on the LIRC, so you may end up with that train. But if you catch a CSX northward on the LIRC with a Q2XX or Q5XX symbol, good chance it's going to Cincinnati. The signals up top on the bridge at Sydney use NORAC assets. On NORAC that is a Medium approach. The signal type doesn't matter in this case, as there are new CSX signals on the Indy line using the NORAC signal aspects. The rules don't care what signal mechanism is used to display the aspect.

By any chance, do you know if anything leaves Louisville on a Saturday and goes to Cincinnati?

@@nkyrailfan Its all luck of the draw, Any train that uses the LCL from Louisville to Cincinnati is a potential candidate for going via Seymour. It's luck of the draw. One exception, the train that handles containers generally won't use the Seymour route because of the location of the Cincinnati intermodal yard. However right now, with Ford's chip shortage and them parking trucks without chips all over Kentucky, It may be harder then usual to catch something via Seymour. In the meantime, if you want an interesting drone video.. buzz over Kentucky Speedway, every inch of it is covered in parked chipless ford trucks.

@@nkyrailfan Also, Q687 Q688 are the two CSX Indy Louisville trains, but they run at night I see now. I am checking with sources if the Ford truck problems are causing CSX not to send anything via Seymour to Cincinnati.

These monster DP trains have no place on eastern railroads. There territories that eastern railroads run in do not have the abilities accommodate these super long trains. Sidings are not long enough, train meets have to be planned hours in advance, and yarding one of these trains is a nightmare. Cutting the thing up in to 3 and 4 cuts to yard it, takes hours.

It's crazy how big these trains are, especially given how small some of the sidings are.
I see trains all the time being held out of the yards in Cincinnati in both directions.
I can only imagine how long it is to break a 13,000 foot train down.

I would it if you could look at the trains in Cleveland. I have not seen any really good recordings. I am really upset et about the lack support for repairing the rails systems there especially the historical tracks and trains. I am originally from Ohio and our tourism is not nonexistent but the Industrial history of our state makes me strongly consider these historical industries important to keep operative. I saw a video about the Hewlett’s being saved and removed for museums as a posed to leaving them I tack, working to just save as Cleveland Industrial history. I am concerned that we will not continually request funding to restore the important historical points in our Industrial states. I look at other countries (Germany) I who have not lost their historical value and use the rail systems to define the region preserving the history surrounding the industrial era. I do consider myself a political concern person. The youth of our country is painful to watch us throwing away our history for modern architectural projects only. The beautiful of Ohio is the land scape itself and apart of that is our industry that built Ohio. 😘😘 I ❤️ your channel!
