  • This is a video from a trip along the NS Dayton District between Cincinnati and Columbus.
The first catch is at the Great Miami River in Dayton.
Then we catch NS 178 again in Springfield and see some tri-light signals.
We see 178 once more in London and then catch two CSX locals in Columbus at LM Cabin.
We finish the trip with a southbound NS heading to Portsmouth and then have a look around Watkins Yard.
    I hope you enjoy.
Feel free to comment and let me know what you think.

Another superb upload - it's always a great day when I see a notification. Love the shots in Dayton and London. Being from Dayton it's always nice to see railfanning in the Miami Valley. Have you ever got your drone up around Middletown? Reed Yard and the AK Steel ops seem interesting. The CSX Middletown Sub doesn't get much coverage either. Appreciate all your work!

I think the tri-light signals are NYC G-Series if I'm not mistaken. I grew up in Springfield in the 80s and 90s and the Dayton District was a pretty busy line during the Conrail years. Then when they shut down Buckeye yard, that eliminated a decent amount of traffic. London was a pretty big junction between the PRR and NYC back in the day.

The reason you didn't get 178 at LM Cabin was because it goes for a crew change at Hauge Ave, west of LM Cabin. The first CSX local was H709, the second H792, and the NS intermodal was 218. The Ohio Central train was the NKWA (Newark to Watkins Turn); it was packing away the cars for Watkins, running around, and taking another cut back to Newark. You should try an Ohio Central Trip, the Newark area is pretty busy. Lastly, I forget the symbol, but the CSX local trying to get into Watkins was a Y symbol. I believe Y135 does the interchange. Awesome Video!

Wow. Neat catch on that UP SD70M, looks like all the rest.. but it was one of 25 early SD70Ms bought by SP. 5 years before the UP bought over a 1000

And one other thing. I got in the cab of CSX 8137 when it was on the Safety Train at North Bergen, NJ, in October 2018.

I believe that the flashing X at the crossings in Springfield are for the train crew if the X is flashing they don't use their horn signaling that the crossing horn and warning system are working properly
