Campervan Built In Wardrobes (& Garage Door!) | Transit Van Conversion E34

  • In this video we're making some custom built-in campervan wardrobes which will form part of the wall which separates the living space from the garage.
    We realised we had nowhere to hang clothes in our van build and even though we'll be having some overhead cabinets as well, we liked the idea of having a small wardrobe too. It turned out to be a great use of a small and awkward space which we didn't know what to do with.
    We added a gate as well to get through into our pretty sizeable garage area!
    Thanks for watching! Any comments or questions? Let us know below!

      Haha cheers :) And interesting, someone recently shared a design sort of like that with us: czcams.com/video/P9IOOqt6R-c/video.html. Maybe useful for inspiration. Guess the tricky bits to figure out would be how to keep the clothes from being exposed to all the moisture and not blocking the van too much if there's more than one of you. Pretty cool concept though. We wanted a dedicated space outside the shower, but we're going to have some sort of rail/bungee that we can temporarily put up in the shower as well to dry clothes out when we're using it as a drying room 🙂

    This whole build is insane probably the best van build I've watched out of any... and there's a lot!! One thing I can't stop thinking about though is the weight of it all. Have you had it on a weigh bridge yet? Be very interesting to know where its at currently or even where you think it will be complete. Obviously with you guys and all fuel water etc. Hats off though this is next level what you have done.

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories  Před rokem +2

      Wow, thanks a lot! There are definitely some great builds and ideas out there. And yeah we have taken it to the weigh bridge a few times now and try to keep track of the weight of things going in. With the appliances and things it's easy as they often have a specced weight, a bit trickier with the woodwork but for small pieces we've taken them into the house to weigh and extrapolated a bit and made decisions around that. So e.g. we originally were going to make the garage wall out of 6mm plywood but then after weighing it changed it down to 3mm which saved us 3kg in the end. So we've been on track with it to be right around the limit, but we've also been thinking more about the kind of things we want to take in the van and having headroom for bikes etc if we want. Being an XLWB and two of us in it our buffer is pretty small, so we're also considering uprating the van a little to have a bit more allowance to play with, but still weighing it up (pun intended 😛)

      @@SelfBuiltStories .😄Can you tell me if you've been able to pocket hole 12mm thick at all? I think I just need to get a thinner drill bit

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories  Před rokem

      Yep, although that is definitely the limit! What we found though is 12mm plywood varies in thickness, so birch ply 12mm is around 12.5mm and works quite well. But cheaper 12mm hardwood ply from Wickes etc is more like 11.3-11.5 and that makes quite a lot of difference. We've done it but to make sure the screw doesn't come through the other side, the screw head has to stick out marginally proud. But in places where we can't see them we've done that. And for both you need the pan head pocket screws which are flatter on the top which tuck in more nicely. HTH 👍

    • @RetroMods
      @RetroMods Před rokem +1

      @@SelfBuiltStories Wow, thanks for that info. I thought Wickes was premium😄😄..no but that makes sense because I've been buying ply from tippers, wickes and local timber merchants and its been hit and miss making a neat job. Never thought thickness would differ. Thanks again

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories  Před rokem

      Yeah that's actually how we planned to have it originally but then swapped it around because it was going to hit the latch we put on the door. It would work on Abi's side 😛 But also we realised if it opens that way then it stops against the garage door, whereas opening into the van as we have it now it can actually open more than 90 degrees which we figured might be useful. Such a tight space that there's so many variables to think about, always!

  • @Yendor2

    Love all the details, can I ask how long the conversion has taken you so far? I’m doing the same van, slightly different design, but taking me a lot longer than I expected…..😢

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories  Před rokem

      Cheers! And a lot longer than we expected, too! Every project always has something that you overlook. We find that no matter how much you plan for something it's always a bit different in practice, or you get massively slowed down for something really annoying like just having the wrong screws (which happens all the time 😶). We also spend a lot of time filming and editing which slows our build down massively, but we enjoy sharing it so we think it's worth it. It's the biggest project we've ever done and can very much be a time sink hole, especially doing everything for the first time. We've been doing ours on and off for around 24 months but with some big gaps at times. As long as you're always moving forward, (or at least two steps forward one step back!), you'll get there in the end 😛 What we've tried to do is take the van out at various points along the way too as we've found it's easy to burnout with all the building. So nice to spend some time in it and enjoy the fruits of all the hard work, and get a feel for how things are going too. Good luck!

    • @theokaralenka
      @theokaralenka Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@SelfBuiltStories Wow, i didn't expect 3mm! :) I thought 4mm is already thin enough lol. And what would you recommend for the walls? Most of the builders recommend 6mm plywood but i think to go with 5mm or maybe even 4mm because don't want to waste the precious kilograms if possible. But a bit afraid if it will be strong and reliable enough...

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Yeah we used 3mm when we could get away with it :) For the wardrobes we found the 3mm was plenty sturdy enough with the frame behind, as they're not carrying any weight or anything. We also used it to cover the bottom of our overhead cabinets, the sides of our bench seats and the outside shower wall. It's quite flexible but with enough support behind it's worked well for us. For other projects in the van we used a lot of 6mm and 12mm (e.g. the kitchen cabinets are just straight 12mm ply). We got better at building lighter as we went through the build too with more experience 🙂 And if by walls you mean the main van walls, then for that we used 8mm cladding instead of ply. But yeah anywhere you can save weight is worth it, it adds up surprisingly quickly especially with a large van!
