      Seagate are worse
I know 8 seagate drives that all failed. 3 of these was mine. I always treat my hard drives like a baby, i don't move my laptop/external drive when is running and never dropped.
I never had any kind of problem with WD.

    • @wildwalkeruk
      @wildwalkeruk Před 5 lety +9

@@wendellhanley6210 I use the Samsung ones mostly. It's not the WD brand I had an issue with, it was the contstruction. Most USB drives are still SATA, so you can take them out of the USB caddy, and still put them in your PC to recover files. These WD Passport drives have the USB directly on the drive, no SATA interface. A lot of the time now I just buy a 2.5" drive, and then buy a caddy from eBay and make my own. It makes warranty claims and basic data recovery simpler.

Hi, I was wondering how much you would charge for a fix like this? MY drive has a similar issue I think, wher it begins to blink when I press down the cable, my local shop was going to charge 350€. I don't think I'm willing to pay for that. If that would seem reasonable to you , maybe I'lll have to accept the fact that all my stuff is lost.

Thank you for an overview of this. My physical connector is weak. I have to hold the cable to get the power connection to work. Its probably loose after years of wear on it. I was kinda hoping there would be a spare SATA connection on this board I could use as a 1 off transfer to get data off of it.

Just because you don't see damage from not using ESD protection, doesn't mean you don't cause latent damage that can fail later. I recommend always using ESD protection when handling a customer's product.
The difference I have seen between Western Digital and Seagate is Seagate has an USB to SATA adapter. My drive was fine but the adapter was bad. I plugged it it to SATA and it read fine.

I have heard that we need a torsion screwdriver for hard drive platter to screw it back or else any extra or less twist on the screw might cause the hard drive to not respond.
Is the case same for the controller board.

My Essential is new and working fine but I noticed a strange noise inside when I shake it. When I opened the upper case I noticed it comes from little plastic "bulb" for LED light (can bee seen in your vid) which is loose. It seams its not screwed but attached to the board with pins. Should I worry about this since I cannot return the disk to the store and say "Hey I opened the disk and saw the little plastic is loose"?

It happend after a minor drop. After your DIY Video 2 with beeping noise it seems like the head is stuck, no cracking noises. I live in a part of the world where both competence and service sucks and it's expensive. Is there possible for an amateur like me too release the head safely in a drive like this. There are a whole life of data in pics and video on it. Extremly valuble to me. I actually would like to send it too you for recovery. Thanks for helpful videos👍 -Dan-

    Hi Abraham,
I've an external WD Passport Ultra similar to the one in your video. I have had it for easily 7+ years without any problems. It dropped the other day. I conneted it immediately to my PC and it loaded the files. Now after some days its just not loading the files, the light is flashing though. It throws the message that the drive needs to be formatted but that process will erase all my data. I have all of my 20 years of professional and personal data on it. I live in a small town in Mississippi and not sure where to send it for data recovery. I would like to send it to you OR any service center you can advise me. I appreciate your help with this. Thanks, Tripty

external drives are for backup only, not personal use, the only other way is to take it to a professional that has a clean room and maybe they can try to swap the plates from the inside to another identical hard drive. But as he said, that may only work with older hard drives, the new ones, it may not even allow you to read the plates. But doesn't hurt to try. Good luck.

Hi, I have a WD My Passport Ultra 2TB which is not functioning anymore. Very very rarely it mounts on my Mac, however very unstable. I can see that all files are there, but when I try to copy files from it, the process freezes. In cases it doesn't mount, the sound when it is connected sounds quite normal, but after a while I hear a klick and it stops rotating. What can this be? I would like to try to replace the controller board. Can this possibly work? Can I buy a 1TB Version of this drive and detach the board or does it have a different board?

Hi I'm not an expert but I was interested. The subject is not so simple. Why? Because the disk platters and heads must be compatible with electronics. I mean. You have the head calibrations saved on the electronics. You can try but there is no guarantee that it will work. But I must say that 20 years ago when I had a 40GB drive, the electronics burned out and I bought it and the drive will work.

Thank you for your recommendation. I also recommend a software to try. If you cannot recover, you can try Bitwar Data Recovery

I was wondering what form factor is this drive? most 2.5" are thin compared to this drive. what would one look for to find this type of drive is there a name for it? Thanks in advance.

I think it is 2.5. It may be thicker because it is 1TB. My 4TB are so thick I can't close the laptop with it installed. I read the data and put 1TB back in. Not sure what you are asking about the name but this is a Western Digital Passport 1TB. WD also makes one called Easystore.

@@ny1t What I am asking is that the 4tb in the WD Passport is the length and width of a normal laptop drive but the thickness is thicker.. Is there an official name for this size?

Can't I just swap the metal memory disc drive onto a brand new ext drive of same make and model? Remove the brand new metal disc and install my old one in it's place, now I have a brand new disc drive with my older memory disc. Can't that work?

What do you charge for fixing a broken connector to the passport. I am a teacher and my passport has information that I need.
