The 2024 iPad Air is probably the best bang for your buck iPad. You get something almost as good as the pro for a fraction of the price and it works with the new Apple Pencil Pro.

@@ayushanand4582 Really interesting question. iPad supports external mice, but I don't know for sure if it recognizes pen events and attributes (pressure, tilt, rotation) through them. The underlying event (NSEvent) in macOS unifies both mouse and tablet, and the iPad uses a variant of it (UIEvent). Guess you'll have to plug one in and try it out! I would, but my Wacom tablet isn't with me, and it's old enough to be USB-A.

Your CZcams channel, over the years, has shown me that there are more options than just the popular expensive stuff to do digital art with. Knowing about the cheaper options helped me save for a much cheaper screen tablet to do the work I like until I was able to afford my first Wacon One tablet. Now that I got the experience of drawing on my Wacom screen display, I am confident in my new goal for saving for an ipad air to make web comics and write fictional stories. Your channel also got me into looking up drawing tablets and building the motivation to get those tablets. All I want to say is thank you.

I went from a 10.5 inch iPad Pro (2nd Gen) to a 5th Gen iPad Air (a week before the new ones were announced), and I don't miss the Pro Motion display. The only real appeal the Pros had for me at that point were more storage options, and I'm very deliberate as far as what I put on my tablet. No streaming, one or two small games that I rarely play, and if I want to edit video, I've got a Mac for that.

Funny story, someone I work with gave me a free Apple pencil (2nd gen) 3years? ago. Fast forward 3 years, I discover Walmart has the 9th gen iPad on sale for $250 right now (new, not refurb). Of course it doesn't work with a 2nd gen Pencil! Well, Wally also has the 5th gen iPad Air for $400... No regrets! Drawing on the Air is AMAZING.

Yes. I have the 10.5 model and the battery is awful, it’s starting to glitch a little, and some apps won’t update on the software . I decided to get the 11” M2 air in 256gb and I’m loving it all the way. I don’t miss the 120 display. But I got an ESR pencil rather than the expensive Apple pencils because I use it for note taking and work. I don’t need to pay extra for a pencil.

I'm running a 2017 12.9 Pro, and it works fine, I love it - well as much as I can for someone who is PC and Android loyal, but they don't have procreate nor the responsivness of the Pencil. I wanted to ask what video editing apps you use, as I heard you mention it towards the end of the video?
I'm wanting to integrate more on to the ipad and likely upgrade to the Air 11, for travel more than anything but the new features like the hover and barrel make it kinda enticing and may make it the new daily. I look forward to your reply! Thanks for the great and comprehensive flick.

Hey, thanks for the great content!
Do you think the 11-inch iPad Air 6th Gen and the Apple Pencil Pro will work for someone who's brand new to Procreate? I plan to use the setup mainly for calligraphy, graffiti-inspired stuff, and somewhat simple drawings and sketches.
I'll also use the iPad in my Glidegear Teleprompter, which doesn't fit a device larger than 11 inches. Should I go through the hassle of changing the teleprompter for the 13-inch, or will the 11 be just fine? I am also kind of on a budget. I'll be happy if you answer.

I’ve been using ipad pro 10.5 for about 6 years. I don’t have a laptop so it’s my main device and I’m using it for about 5 hours a day. Right now I’m considering between ipad pro 11 m4 and ipad air 13. The tandem oled screen looks so amazing but i mainly use ipad for youtube, web browing and read some comics so I think ipad air 13 isn’t a bad choice at all. Ipad pro 10.5 is 120Hz so if I use ipad air 13 with 60Hz, will it be noticeable? Which one do you think I should upgrade?

I just received the Air 13" two hours ago, the Apple Pencil Pro will come later today. The main difference I notice is the 60hz refresh rate; when using any app not so much, but when using any interface gesture or animation, it's quite noticeable.
For me the colors are more than enough. I compared it to my M1 with mini led and my iPhone 15 Pro with Oled. The main difference is in light tones and this happens on any IPS non HDR screen, much brighter and contrasted on the best displays. Other than that, it's almost the best IPS screen I ever used, I guess it will be enough for most of people. Note, first thing to do: deactivate True Tone.

QUESTION: I’m upgrading from a 1st gen iPad Pro (12.9) and couldn’t find any info about the refresh rate online. I’m guessing with the M2 processor I won’t notice much of the lag you mentioned in regards to the 60 Hz vs. 120 Hz as the whole device will probably feel a lot faster and smoother in comparison?
Definitely want the new pencil so debating between the Air and the Pro…
Any advice of the community is much appreciated! 😊

Once you get in the zone of drawing you really don't notice it. Like Brad says, the apps are optimizing the experience of the Apple Pencil, it's definitely more than capable.
(speaking from the experience of upgrading from a base gen 8 iPad to the 2020 iPad Pro and then trying out the M2 iPad Air at Best Buy.)

I was thinking about 13-inch Air, but then I saw the price in Europe and went for a refurbed M1 12.9 (2021) with 16 GB RAM, 1 TB, 5G, and a 12-month warranty with a pencil that costs 1010 euros. The Air is 1549 (1749 5G) euro without the Pencil and with 8 GB of RAM.

Great video! I picked up the 13" Air to replace my M1 10.9 Air. I do wish the apple pencil 2nd gen was compatible but the pro is pretty awesome honestly. I think for the price this is one of the best tablets available. I know it can add up quickly with accessories, (at least the old magic keyboard is compatible if you have one) but when it is all said and done this is a great device for art and illustration, even great as a laptop replacement if your not doing anything crazy on your laptop.

@daviddelmundo2187 hey always remember this, 11 inch is okay as normal and normal size and 13 inch isn't so.much bigger but if you want to go outside and draw and take it around and move it around I say 11 inch for less space and weight and 13 inch if you only use it at homr

Great review, broadly agreed. I have a 2020 iPad Pro 12.9" and my kid has a 2023 11" Air with no plans to upgrade any time soon, but I think the "Pro" products are starting to considerably overserve many users' needs. I bought a new Mac last year and I opted for the M2 MacBook Air over the Pro, because nothing I do is compute-limited. I upgraded to *24GB* of RAM and it has been waaaaay better bang for my buck.
I'll keep keeping an eye on these, but we're probably good for another 4 years or so-unless something revolutionary is announced next month at WWDC, which I doubt.

I realize this is a channel geared for drawing so please don’t hate. Is there an aftermarket (cheaper) alternative for just note taking on th air 13? The usb-c pencil does work. The pencil with lightning attachment didn’t work with a lightning to usb c adapter in case anyone was wondering. Thanks for the great video wish I had 129 for the pro

I bought an ESR pencil for 20.00 and for note taking, doodling, digital planning; it’s fine. Saved myself 110.00 considering I just bought an Apple gen 2 for my mini in March 😅. Anyways, it works for what you’re looking for. Amazon ESR brand

@@Tiffs-bookshelf I bought the ESR Digital Pencil 2Y2345 on Amazon and couldn’t get it to recognize it. Thankfully Amazon takes back anything. There’s a different newer ESR model on Amazon, I’m going to give that a shot. Hope this helps someone else with their IPad Air 13 I really wish apple would’ve allowed the original pencil work with an adapter, even with limited functionality. It’s not the apple way though. Thanks again for the video and response.

Brad, for a long term investment as an artist, is it better to get the Pro or the Air? I’m upgrading from 2018 Pro. Still work just fine except for the battery, but I need that barrel roll feature. Anyway, my 2018 pro practically paid for itself in a year from the amount of money I got from projects I completed using only the ipad and procreate. So I’m thinking more on the line of long term investment rather than features. Like if I get the M4 pro, I would not need to upgrade until M10 come. But with M2 Air, I might need to upgrade when maybe M7 or M8 comes out? Is that make sense?

The iPad Air seems a better fit than the pro, although I think the surface pro 11 could be actually a better choice for drawing (and anything else really) than an iPad specifically regarding the price and the bump in power with the new Qualcomm chip, can't wait to see your review on it, I know the surface has a special place in your heart (I remember your old video back in 2016 when I was trying to decide between the iPad and the surface pro) :)

I would like to see how an iPad replaces a computer, especially for an artist or animator. Personally, once procreate dreams came out the iPad has been my go to for animation and digital art, and it works perfectly, even if I’m using a 4th gen iPad Air, that doesn’t even use the M1 processor. Looking forward to that video.
