Carver One | What is it and what is it really like to drive?!

- This Carver One is an intriguing blend of bike and car, with a unique tilting body that gives it remarkable agility through corners. While not especially practical, the Carver received praise from across the motoring press at its launch. When it appeared on the BBC’s Top Gear programme, Jeremy Clarkson said: “I have to say, absolute hand on heart, I've never had so much fun in a car”.
James Little, @littlejameslittle gets behind the wheel and has a good look around this Carver One, being auctioned on Collecting Cars.

I love the "fighter jet copkit" look of this type of vehicles! It's like a flight simulator, I would change the driving wheel for a control stick, that would be insane.
copkit?
@ Peter Graphic , it’s obvious what he meant, don’t be a sarcastic Di** , your probably a grown a** man grow up and act like it
@@mikewheelermx101 And who are you to forbid me being sarcastic, slimy earthworm? How dare you approach me verbally before bowing, so your good for nothing nose hits the refuse on the street?

@@petergraphic5394 both yall chill
Looking at the 45 degree tilting... that's probably why there is an ashtray instead of a cupholder. :D
Lol, exactly! When he said it I was like: Dude, have you ever seen a cupholder in a motorcycle? 😁
@@moteroargentino7944actually several bikes come with one or more
A cup works fine in a banking aircraft.
The CofG is always through the center of the cup.
R
Yeah, controlling the tilt with the steering mechanism is a huge mistake. It should be controlled by gravity level. In that case, a cup holder would work just fine.
@@theobserver9131 yeah because the natural lean of a motorcycle round a corner puts it in a relative "down" parallel to the motorcycle.
It looks bonkers, yet fun & stylish... however the near £30,000 price tag says "no chance".
Yes, i agree with you
What!!!!! Convert that to my home country's currency (zar), thats just over 600k... enough to buy three demo polo vivo's.
Sad about the price It looks like it would be fun tho
the company is still around and now makes an ev version about 1/3 that price fyi. not exactly going to blow anyone's socks off with its 45km top speed and 100km range but probably good fun regardless.

Drove one of these around Monaco back in 2004 - initially following the inventor/owner of the company. An absolute hoot - drove thru Casino Square everyone stares down thru the Gas Station hairpin overtaking some astonished motorcyclists who just parked up and watched. So so much fun.
I remember seeing this on top gear. Still needs weapons. 🤣
Lol
Learn how to weld
@@sparky2721 I did. 🤣
@@dnf-dead good shit now you can put whatever the fuck you want on it
Yes.
I think it’s around 2010.
No need for RND.
JUST COPY THE TECHNOLOGY.
This was on top gear about 10 years ago maybe even more I remember it was in yellow cuz I said wow I would love one of those yes still can't afford one but I would still like one 🙂
I remember seeing a similar bike like this probably over 20 years ago on a TV Show called Beyond 2000. Except it was a two wheel version, and it costs $100,000. It was being developed by a man in Switzerland.
Drove one of these once. After about 10 seconds the swinging feels completely natural, like you are on a bike. Not strange at all, quite the opposite.
8:52 Try taking a tipsy buddy on the vomitory.
As a pilot of a light plane, I'd feel right in home in that, we carve turns when flying, cars and other ground vehicles don't, except for this thing.
As a longboarder, I'm quite familiar with the ground at road speeds. Recently got an electric one but this three wheeler for sure interests me.
I play some flight sim and have never realised the similarity with carving until you said that but it sure is similar.
Isn't it a strange feeling to return from a few hours in the air and change yoke and rudder pedals for steering wheel, gas pedal and brakes? .... always the wrong pedals for those coordinated turns ;-)
That car could help take away at least a little bit of that weirdness.
Motorcycles mate..
For me the lean has always been what's missing from that bike/car combo experience, or I would just stay with four wheels, so this thing looks like a hoot!
I can think of a few of my old favourite roads where at night with the roof off this thing would feel like being in a dog-fight!
Nicely done 🏆
Is it half the size of a normal car? : NO.
Does it cost twice a normal car? : Hell Yeah.
I bet that stereo only plays the “Top Gun” soundtrack! :)
🤣
3 wheels, it's technically classed as a motorbike! The old Reliant Robin 3 wheeler was able to be driven by someone who passed their motorbike license here in the UK.
Ridiculously funny
My old man still got a runner and his giving to my son soon.... can't wait 😉
It’s a damn sight easier to get a full car license than a full bike license in the UK.
The reason these monstrosities are not in production is because they take up the same amount of road space as a useful small car. It is a mere novelty, a totally pointless, impractical, overpriced p.o.s that pleases neither bikers nor car drivers.
It’s classed as a trike,not a motorcycle. (In U.K.)
@@stephencrowther524 You can drive them on a motorcycle license, there is no such thing as a 'trike' test or license in the UK⚠️😳
In law it's classed as a motorcycle for the purposes of which test to take to drive them!
All part of Bonkers Britain 🇬🇧 🙄
I love that it's a manual transmission. ❤
The lamborghini of tuktuk.

I have always wanted a carver 1
it is a 2-setter 3wheeler sports- tooktuk.
Absolutely fantastic.
Very cool and informative! Thanks!
Nothing, and I mean nothing beats CYCLING to work. You get home 100% refreshed. I lived in Tottenham and worked in Pimlico and for years I cycled all through London every single day and it is the fondest memories I have from commuting.
It looks magnificent and at the same time efficient as well.
Love these I’ve driven 2 Of them they’re absolutely gorgeous I haven’t managed to sweet anyone in the hall to money yet but I would love one in a future thanks for this Mike
His sincere enjoyment while driving this is enough to get me to really want the chance to drive it.
Wow, that actually looks like loads of fun.
Top Gear introduced the Carver. Still, super cool.
Futuristic tuk-tuk
Always enjoyed watching the Carver
Looks beautiful!
It's stunning.
Love it . I want one .
I love huge wheeled 4x4’s (not SUV’s) but the Carver is pretty cool! I wouldn’t mind having one! 😃
If I had the money I'd buy one in a heartbeat. Don't forget to mention that it's Dutch. Richard Hammond on Top Gear did a great review of it. I'd want one in orange. It's great to see that it has a manual transmission. Thank you.
This car type has yet to become mainstream, when the time is right, especially now these days!.
Here in The Netherlands we have a scooter version, but i hope Vandenbrink will bring back their original design and make that electric too.
Carver is dutch and they are still in operation
@@thomson765 I know.
I had a test drive in one when they first came out. It’s a lot of fun but I couldn’t afford it at the time, didn’t think you could still get them
I really hope this becomes available in the US and not just in California
LOOKS LIKE MUCH FUN DRIVING!
I always was amazed by the carver, such a wonderful concept
It really does look like a snowboard carving through the snow.
I was yawning until I saw the tilt, that looks great fun
I had one 15 years ago been out for years very fun
We need mass production of that.
No
@@stumerkaiba6431 why?
Oh. Look. A Lean Machine. Been there, done that. Saw one at Epcot.
Yep...I think the Lean Machine looked better. I wonder what happened to it? Going to have to go look it up now.
Now that, it gorgeous. Love it.
Lovely car James.
This is the closest thing to my own concept of a personal vehicle for both city and rural life. Way more refined than mine though.
Great demo of this car (ver)!
Carver 1 is the car of the Future...
and it always will be...
I saw this car on "Beyond 2000" back in the late 90's multiple names ago.
Love it.
Brilliant vehicle. Perfect for revisiting with electric power. 1 person urban transport. Great design.
They only make electrical ones now (and it fits 2 persons)
This car was presented by Top Gear years ago!
See video description
Amazing! Simply!
Such fun had the use of 1 years ago did our own version of top gun in it 2 up and i think we got to 100 mph down hill can go hunting for the video !!
AIRWOLF soundtrack should be played. 🙏 Just to drive this would be a dream come true. 🙏
I've always wanted one so bad sine I saw it on Top Gear.
Absolute insane. I want it!
Sad to hear they don't produce these anymore.
If this futuristic car has an ashtray, where’s the 8-track tape player?
A company had a couple of these in New Zealand and took passengers for riders around Twisty rural roads.
Cool ride
Lol, love how James is just barely containing his gleeful kiddie excitement. It _is_ cool.
if it's a steering wheel, it's a car.
I'd imagine forgetting it tilts all the time and making a sudden turn and then shitting my pants
As a motorcyclist commuter, my experience says you rapidly acclimate. It only feels weird if it doesn't tilt. I tried to ride a trike motorcycle, and I was so unsure and freaked out. It scares the crap out of me.
@@nicklockard so you proved my point 😅 I've only ever driven cars so the sensation of a tilt would shit me up. You've been riding bikes so the lack of that sensation shits you up! Basically this is a car for bikers and trikes are bikes for car drivers 😅
@@minero1775 LOL. No, I also drive cars. What I'm saying is your body and brain rapidly acclimate, typically five to ten minutes. You know that feeling you get when you've been skating or ice skating, then stop? It feels weird for 10 minutes because your brain is used to moving a certain way. I've taught several people to ride passenger on motorcycles. Getting over that initial fear of 'falling' takes about 5 turns. Pretty soon you realize that the HARDER you've leaned over, the MORE stable the system has become. It's all physics. Leaning is far more stable than not, because you lower your center of gravity more the harder you lean, thus making it much harder to tip over.
I do get it if it is not for you; I'm just proposing to not fear it because you've no experience with it or don't understand it. Stay neutral until you've tried it a few times--the brain is super adaptive and wants, no CRAVES to learn and do new things--well mine does.
I need one !
Super cool. 🤠
Yeah this machine has been on the go a long time. I remember looking at reviews years ago. Love to have one. I suspect we may hear about this machine more and more, even as an optional electric.
If there was an electric version available today, I would buy it.
@@aeasus I kind of did some looking for this unit again on youtube after my reply on this article. It looks like there is an electric one out there. Don't know if they are available worldwide though.
@@kmarche100 we have them running around in the Dutchlands, only go 45kph tho
@@Aristocrafied Thanks for the reply. No kidding eh, well great for running around city. Thought they would be faster. Really nice unit .
@@kmarche100 I bet they could make faster versions. I think it's mostly because they don't have anywhere to put more batteries for any kind of usable range
looks great..... only comment is that the head lights now looks different and are LED with Lens and looks thin and small to be futuristic looking.. Hope they can update that too on that awesome bike.... :)
Its fascinating. You cound disable tilting when car was idle.
Fantastic
I wouldn't turn the ashtray into a cup holder what that suspension 😂😂
The cup would be perfectly stable and you're coffee would not slop about as in a normal car. I think you misunderstand how this system works, look it up.
@@ziggarillo lol what he didn't misunderstand.
@@piuthemagicman inertia, perhaps you do as well?
I assumed this would be a review of the electric version (came out in 2019) not the petrol one, which came out in 2007.
Exactly whats the point of a petrol version . Should be electric /automatic with more AI /self drive button steering and gears with a digital dashboard so you don't have all those pedals and gear sticks that take up space
@@ek04show I think the issue is that this is a review of a very old vehicle. This review should have been done 12 or 13 years ago. Weird that they would review it like it is something new.
Could not agree with you more.
@@ek04show It is a dual mode. It should be Hybrid petrol/electric.
Very nice...
I like this!
I saw one live in wthite in traffic,in Dresden)
Saw one of these on T.G years ago, it was Orange and cost a bomb.
Right, that's the main problem. Expensive. Result? Nobody actually bought it. Let's hope the secondhand ones are getting into affordable price ranges. It is such a pitty that ALL concepts like this, are bound to end in a bankrupt. Developing such things is expensive, and rich potential customers simply kill it. They hesitate, until its faith is sealed. That happens all the time to any great new vehicle.
I'd love to drive one of these in the snow!
Great review. I would have preferred more footage from outside of the vehicle showing it leaning when turning, changing lanes, etc.
Great Demo..🤔
What engine is in it, did i miss that bit..
600 cc daihatsu as I recall. Atvleastvthe earlier ones were
It's a bit pricey but looks fun.
Superb model
This looks different and fun.
We all need this instead of the huge vehicles that we have, we are solo drivers 99% of the time! I would get one
I agree.
Having a converted cup holder on here would make for some interesting demonstration 😂
It would, they do a demonstration with a bucket of water with the cargo version.
The cup, holder would not need converting, on a standard car it would be an idea
@@voornaam3191 Cup holders rule! especially in tilting cars
Love it
Beautiful car
Great to see this on British roads again. My favourite TG review was of the Ecomobile 2 wheel capsule with Jeremy sat in the back being driven by the lady owner very quickly. Also look up the GM lean machine concept from late 1970’s, very similar to this ( I saw it as a kid at EPCOT Disney) stuck with me ever since. Enjoy!

I'm 14 now 2024 I can gat it

Now I wanna move to England!!
Its a dutch made car
Oh how cool
Wish it had two wheels up front even with the leaning. The leaning would put the weight in a better place than a traditional car, and the two wheels up front would almost double the braking power. We all know rear brakes are like 10-15% of the cars total braking. Having two wheels would allow for a little more robust front runner - I don’t doubt frequent front tire changes are necessary.
Weight?
Engine?
Power?
Performance?
MPG?
Price?
I agree ....seriously lacking any form of information whatsoever......other than OOo it tilts, over and over again
I think it had a Daihatsu 660cc engine. Not that fast, because of the power/weight ratio, but have a look on the website. Very expensive.
@@bishy33 It was like watching a really bad Blue Peter presentation.
I imagine as with learning to ride a motorcycle, some parking lot practice would be good with this vehicle. You could explore some steeper steering angles at slow speed, practice with road cones, emergency braking, etc
I recognise those roads, Kelham Hall and Southwell
I LOVE THIS VEHICLE - KAMRAN TONY.
Wouldn't want to brake on a curve in this. Tippy!
(Played with go-carts as a kid.) The triangle should be reversed: 2 wheels in front!
Be interesting to know how it handles wet roads and skids, especially with that tilting function. And what's the mileage for a full tank?...It is petrol, isn't it? Or is it electric?
Electric carver made in netherland
Very good 👍 video
Put the 2 wheels in front, motor in rear wheel, canting front and rear steering- much more stable and safer.
rear steering is the worst at anything other than ambulatory speeds. Thats why they are on forklifts and earthmovers. On water, it would be different.
Or for even more terrifying driving, put the front wheels in the middle of the car and have rear steering.
