I guess that no one remembers the Blizzard of 77... over 8 feet of snow fell in about 24 hours and combined with high winds to make drifts of up to 40 feet. I lived in a 3rd floor apartment, and the snow was just short of our balcony. In many cases it reached up to rooftops. The wind pounded the snow into the engine compartment of my brand-new car, and it wouldn't start until we dug out the snow. Cars that pulled off the roads were literally buried, and it took weeks to find and dig them out.
Hope you all fare better this time, but never underestimate the snow in Buffalo!
I certainly remember it!
I was born in 85 😔 i missed it
I remember it 😊 I was 17
I love global warming
I remember it too .
Now this is literally the perfect chance to say, “when I was your age, I had to travel through 77’’ of snow.”
You mean in 1977
Running a little low on that brain damage there.
Uphill both ways.
All praise to Allah for the beautiful weather
Wow. 77 feet of snow would truly be unprecedented... You probably meant 77".
I was born and raised in Buffalo......was in the blizzard of 77....the amount of snow dumped in this storm is crazy ! Prayers for safety!
When I was a kid we used to build snow forts with tunnels running underneath. A great place to play. ☃⛄
Until they collapsed on you.
Building a giant snowman was always my favorite wintertime thing to do . Sledding was tge second .
Until it caves in and u suffocate...sorry, e.m.t. here, had a few child fatalities because of that. Play safe
I was telling friends about that yesterday. fun snow days for kids, that's for sure. no interest in living up there ever again, however. snow isn't that much fun as an adult.
Our local college had snow sculpture competitions. We ‘drove’ around voting on the Best.
The UK goes nuts over 4 inches of snow. We would be completely knackered with 77 inches.
Good luck to you all!
here this is normal. we get it snow like this every year.
@@Chlef Yes, i grew up in Buffalo, it's 100% normal.
@@Chlef so then why is the media blowing it out of proportion
@@mffuniverse3806 well to get more clicks and more money. and the governer shutting down the roads and stuff is all politics, is not about keeping people safer or anything. we did get a lot of snow, we got 6 feet but they are just making it a bigger deal than it is. we got 7 feet of snow in 2014 on the exact same days as this time. both times it snowed from 11/17 to 11/20. its not that unusual.
Love that he gave the driver credit!! That's never discussed.
Lived in the WNY area most of my life, this is just one of these episodes which hit us every 10 years or so. We will be back in business pretty quickly and most people won't be too effected except those who over-exert and suffer cardio/vascular problems. By far the worst such event here occurred here in Jan. 1977 where the drifts covered the tops of telephone poles.
The bluest snow I've ever seen was in 77. The tunnels we made that winter would have made coal miners proud.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣The storms on average are getting worse, carrying more moisture and will be of a more intense nature as we are currently experiencing around the World and as that is the essence of Stage 2 Climate Chaos which we are now at only the very beginning of. Tell the Grandkids to enjoy life while they can.

@@dutchflats you might think its funny. Shame you choose to ignore the experts. We said the same about hot summers here in the UK. Once a decade. Now records are being broken every year.
77 inches in Orchard Park. That's 6'5". So if you're 6 foot 9 the snow is up to your eyeballs. Not the drifts or the piles the plows leave. Everywhere. Your roof, your yard, the street. Then any drifts/piles... That's nuts.
yeah man im only 6' (im 15, still growing), but thinking about how the snowfall could quite literally make me disappear is insane.
That Buffalo Ny for ya! Snow City
well, I am only 5'2'' so I am glad to no longer be living in WNY. Grew up in W Seneca and sending prayers that the snow doesn't melt too fast this week or it will be flooding there soon! Temps are to be in the 40's and rain by Friday and Saturday UGH!
@@Frank-rx6wm What makes it worse is all of the snow that fell is wet and heavy, which is a nightmare to shovel and can cause exertion, which can be deadly.
@@Frank-rx6wm i try to be lighthearted about terrible things LOL, i mean think about it, being completely enveloped by snow, sounds nice and terrifying at the same time.
It’s interesting from an engineering perspective, because in Minnesota (my home state), you’ll never really see a thick snow covered roof on a house. They are all designed to be taller and steeper so the snow falls off when it gets too heavy. I suppose they don’t build them like that out near the coasts because it normally isn’t necessary. Crazy how much a few feet of snow can weigh, let alone six…
Yup we’ve had a couple roofs converted to have peaks in our neighborhood in recent years
Gamma Del Ray, snow is water right, I worked on a building site in Northern England in winter, and the bricklayers were using one part of the roof for debris, it snowed and froze so with the weight of snow/water and debris the whole lot fell through 5 floors of the building all the way to ground level 😳
@@theblurredcrusade.2557 o.g, hopefully no one was hurt
As a fellow minnesotan, I see that as well. Homes generally have more bracing to handle snow that does acclimate.
@@hint0122 no, actually it was a mad situation because loads of us had been working on that area, we finished at 17:00 and at 19:00 ish the security guard said he heard this massive noise and it all fell through 😳
I hope everyone stays as safe as possible there. I was a student at Buffalo State College in 2002-2004 and I remember the snow we got those winters and being mad we still had to go to class, lol. I’ve never seen anything like this. I live in Fl now so I have to deal with tropical storms and hurricanes every once in awhile. God bless you guys. Buffalo has a special place in my ❤.
I LOVE NY, ain’t no place I’d rather be, even in Winter. I’ve lived here all of my 61 years and will live here until I die, we deal with some rough weather in Winter but the changing seasons are spectacular and we don’t have have to deal with earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes ( we get very few tornadoes in NY) , ungodly high temps and for the most part we have the kindest people that live here, we take care of each other here in NY.
Wow, years ago I helped clear the roof of a split level home, after which you could step from roof to packed snow. Then we had to find a spot to slide down to the drive. Our area didn't have snow plows, they had huge snow blowers on the front of dump trucks that blew the snow up to 40 feet between houses.
I'm Stephen from Missouri and you
Not good for metal carports. If anything New Yorkers are used to snow. It's just more of the stuff they normally get. There have been some years lately that haven't received much snow at all. I guess mother nature's making up for it. That bowling alley looks like it might have had problems long before the storm hit. That line of truckers happened because as the firefighter said I-90 was closed. I'll bet Wegman's figured out a way to open.
@@stephenburning9452 Thankfully no longer in northern Canada! Fortunately I had a hand made Eskimo parka I used back then. Amazingly warm at 30 below.
You are all in our prayers. We have lived through blizzards and my heart goes out to you all.....🙏🙏🙏
Parents are annoyed but the kids are like oh yeah.
Uh-huh . Storms like this are awesome to a kid . When the skies clear the locals are going to see hundreds of snowmen , snowforts
igloos etc . . all over the place
It's a way of life here. I live in Oswego my whole life, and nasty winters are a cost of living here. We've been fortunate for too long with mild winters. Now it's like the winters I remember when I was a child. Extreme wind chills and massive amounts of snow. This is nothing new or surprising for us. We make due, clear out the snow, and go on with life. But investing in a snowblower and snowmobile are highly recommended. Stay safe and warm to all my fellow snowbelters.
so much for global warming

I would like to see video of 77 inches of snow. This report talks about 6 feet of snow but none of the video show anything close to 6 feet. I call BS to the people who are measuring this. Please, lets see the video. And not just someone standing in a drift. If there is truely 6 feet of snow the snow would be covering peoples doors to thier houses as doors are just 6 ft 8 inches high. If they were truely plowing 6 feet of snow I would expect to see snow piles up to 20 feet.
And yet people still refused to heed warnings and try to get out and drive around. Unbelievable stupidity!
My Son one of them, thankfully he's good despite Me warning him to stay in the house.
I hope people remain safe and warm!
Don't worry--all of New York's diversity will melt it away and save everyone.
that lake effect snow from Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, I live a couple hours drive south of there and the weather is mild by comparison, absolutely crazy, it's just barely snowing here on the NY border
You mean border
me too! i live in Olean, NY which is right on the border of NY and PA and the snow down here is mild. i pray for everyone's safety who live in these areas. God bless.
Yup - the lake effect just hits hard this small area right around orchard park. You go 3 miles south & it’s nothing.
Does this effect Indiana?

This is so hard to comprehend! I'm in FL where weather is in the 80s. We barely get cold for two weeks. Prayers for everyone having to deal with that.🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Live in South Florida for 30 years but was originally from cold, windy extremely snowy Niagara Falls NY.
It is a beautiful time of year; driving and shoveling is the biggest headache.
I moved to Florida at the beginning of the year from New York. I wouldn't go back. So far the terrible weather Florida had a few months ago didn't affect where I live.
I just pull out the tape to show my kids. We're in WI. Never seen such an Ominous cloud of snow.. Roll in like that. Perhaps keeping 3days of food n water and NOT GETTING IN THE WAY OF EMERGENCY RESPONDERS!! would be a kind action.
Would be interesting to see a report on how the owners of electric cars and trucks are doing with this winter storm and long lines of stranded vehicles.
I'm wondering about all those trucks stranded on the highway....running out of fuel.
My 70+ years of experience in WNY has proven an EV will start and a gas powered car, maybe. Like any vehicle if you don't put gas in it or don't charge it, then it is not the vehicle's fault but the bone head owner. A properly charged Tesla if stuck in snow can keep the interior warm for 60 to 70 hours depending on how high you set the temp.
If your from buffalo you will know that this isn’t that bad. We are from buffalo and can handle it. Stop making more of it than it is.. I will fly in Sunday from Florida no problem.
There’s a picture of me and my little brother playing in the snow in 2014. The snow was higher than our street signs. We had 3 weeks off of school and it was the best
Prayers with Buffalo residents🙏🙏
This is nothing new.
My great uncle spent the majority of his life in way upstate Ney York, from the late 50's clear through the 90's and he would tell me about getting snowed in for months at a time.
5-6 foot "snow drifts" as he called it.
Literally had to shovel from the front door out and up to stand on the frozen snow and climb up on the roof of his house!
But also instilling about being prepared, because when it catches you off guard like this one you can get in to trouble real quick.😳
Exactly, I'm a senior and remember that well, they have just had several mild winters so they forgot how to prepare.
We do know how winter can be here in Buffalo but is rarely we get 6 feet's in one day or 2.
I've lived here my whole 64 yrs. Never has WNY been snowed in for months at a time. Sorry but your uncle exaggerated. By a lot.
Is the new ice age that was promised to us in the 80’s finally upon us? 😂
Yep, all the scientists have verified that we are in a Solar Minimum, headed for another ice age, but shhhh! Don't disrupt the "Global Warming" fear porn.😱😏
Welcome to winter. People don’t know how to prepare for snow storms. Sad.
Thankfully we've finally embraced remote work as a population. I realize not everyone can do remote but for those that can silver lining from COVID I suppose.
Yes, but as long as you have electrical power and pipes don't freeze and break. Once in NYC an old pipe under Madison Ave. froze and broke so there was a small flood. But there were enough gallons of water for everyone in the deli and grocery stores.
Man they trying to kill Thanksgiving 😭
I like my country farming small town area . We got several feet of snow a few times last year and the locals working with the state take their farm equipment and hit the roads so within a few hours its business as usual.
Same here in NE Ohio.

I'm from Montreal and in March 1971 we had what we called "The storm of the century". We received 141 inches of snow (11' 7 feet) in 2 days with blizzard winds. There were no more roads, no trains, no planes, no buses or taxis only snowmobiles. Everything shut down. At the time, it was a world record. Hang in there neighbors 🇺🇲

Boy, they're getting it early up there! When I went to Albany a few years back, there was still snow on the ground though it had melted here. It was also like another world; so tranquil and peaceful.😊
After the Blizzard of 1977, I left and moved to Florida.
As somebody who lived in upstate New York around Albany …..western New York is infamous for the large amounts of snowfall it gets during there storms……… I’ve lived in Miami Florida for the last three years so I have not had to deal with snow and Miami was fortunate to miss a lot of hurricanes this year……….. But in New York the one thing I wouldn’t do was drive through snowstorms selfish corporations get people killed and stuck in dangerous conditions by not shutting down their stores and expecting their employees to stay through the whole shift while a giant snowstorm is underway…….. Sometimes it’s a false alarm and you’ll only get 2 to 4 inches instead of around foot or over……. But when you get over 7 inches accumulated and less than a couple hours I think it safe to shut down the local area and wait it out the best part about snow storms is sitting inside warm and cozy and safe……… A lot of these people were probably stuck at work watching the snow from inside wondering if they’re able to make it home…….. And then there is just an unintelligent people who just have to take a trip to the liquor store or go over to a friends house and end up getting stuck because they go out hours into the storm thinking that it’s not too bad to travel just yet and then they get stuck……… Glad I don’t have to deal with snow storms anymore and I live far enough in land from the ocean to not deal with insane flooding from tropical storms or hurricanes
Just moved from Houston to Buffalo. Share the same experience with both hurricane/flood and blizzard/snow 🤣

I do! My friend had her baby in Feb ‘78 and we had it here. Marylanders had one January 6th 1996; my mother died just as it started falling, took two & half weeks before we could have her funeral and bury her.
For those wondering what happened to global warming:
"A warming climate can contribute to the intensity of heat waves by increasing the chances of very hot days and nights. Climate warming also increases evaporation on land, which can worsen drought and create conditions more prone to wildfire and a longer wildfire season. A warming atmosphere is also associated with heavier precipitation events (rain and snowstorms) through increases in the air’s capacity to hold moisture."
While counterintuitive, this is exactly what's expected to happen due to global warming.
