Transatlantic Return, Ep. 3: No one stops for a gam anymore

- In the middle of nowhere I fall in with another westbound sailboat! But they just sail right on past. Whatever happened to the days of stopping for a gam, swapping stories of great whaling exploits and scantily clad Tahitian women? A few rain squalls supply me with some oh so precious fresh water. The brisk winds of the past week get progressively lighter.

"she slowly and methodically revealed one of those glorious gams". I paid plenty attention in high school to "gams", but not the Moby Dick kind.
Discovered your CZcams channel and glad I did. I've been sailing for 47 years and in my humble opinion you are the Joshua Slocum of CZcams (he didn't have an engine either). I won't be giving up my diesel but I look forward to watching your incredible sailing videos. As well as donating to your effort.
I would stop for a chat if we ever pass. Best sailing channel ever.
This is one of my favorite sailing channels.
Really the only sailing channel that is really about Sailing.. I never miss an episode.
@@sailingEV888 Eh, there are others that focus on sailing, but this is my favorite.
With very little electronics on board (GPS/InReach/VHS) and charts. A dark hull, beautiful, heavy, long keel, traditional Gaff rigged Cutter with no engine. Relatively slow compared to other lighter sail boats, this boat will not run away from weather but it is well equipped to take a beating. This boat is also his home. Whatever decision he makes, he literally has to live with it. An experienced, talented and ingenious sailor with fine seamanship and good judgement. A clear and easy to understand narrative style with no artifice. Mix all of that into a "one pot" meal and you have the making of a channel with an interesting and unique proposition. 😎
But there’s no needlessly pretty boy and girl couple!!!!
I follow half a dozen and have stopped following half a dozen more and How to Sail Oceans is by far my favorite.
KEVIN! I tense up every time I see you go forward in weather without a harness and tether. OMG, man.
Awesome to watch the stormy weather develop and what you do to handle it - Cool as a cucumber as usual!!
Those are gorgeous shots of your boat from the drone.
True. The rest of us are just getting up each day and walking around. You LIVE each moment!
shopping for new Chartplotter and you get reading about the features. Sonar so advanced You can count the scales on a fish 100 feet deep. Then I remember Kevin and say, "WHO NEEDS ALL THIS CRAP!!". Zen of Sailing.
Nice video Kevin. I never had that problem with my InReach, but I did finally end up buying an Iridium GO for the longer passages. (I didn't use the 'multiple location forecast' with my InReach though -- and didn't even know that that feature existed.) It's nice to see the GRIB on the GO. Stay safe.
Happy New Year, Patrick! Next voyage I think I'm going to switch to Iridium GO. InReach got quite frustrating, and their customer service is all but non-existent.
We missed you as well Sir Patrick Lane. Best wishes for New Year from Turkey.⚓️
Superb ending
Great shot under the water!
I know this was several weeks ago, but if you are still in the USVI I would love to buy you a few beers. I have a mooring in Christiansted Harbor on St Croix you could use. Really appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos. Thanks for sharing your adventures!
Hi Steven, I'm still in StT, but not planning to go to StX, haven't been there in years. Though a mooring makes it a little more tempting, as that anchorage in Christiansted is devilish ...
Oh .. Thats what a gam is!
Beautiful sailing and beautiful drifting.
Beautiful end shot and commentary. Really enjoying your voyage!
+1. Love those last drone shots in the calm with stunning sky in the background!
I agree. It looks so unreal but also so picturesque!!
Absolutely. Wow

woohoo! I like watching a pretty boat sail the oceans.
Stars must be so beautiful at night.
They are indeed.
@@howtosailoceans1423 notice you were having problems with your sat phone, can you wire a external antenae? I have no experience with sat phones, but a external Wi-Fi with a parabolic reflector (beer can) worked for me.
Maybe hooked up to a sextant, and point it a the satellite.
Just a idea.
Love the end shot your bathing in the essence of offshore sailing

Yeah, it could use a scrub ... Happy New year, mate.
I love the video with the squall and beautiful shot with the moon from the drone...Thank you from sharing Kevin
Great job.
Another great video Kevin, thanks
The shots with the drone at the end are money! Thanks!
Great shots at the end as you drift along.
Love the ending
Fantastic video, Kevin.
I continue to enjoy your videos and learn from them. I like the fact that they are mostly sailing and passage making. As a want to be cruiser, I am more interested in the sailing and navigation skills than I am in hiking and snorkeling. I hope you keep them coming.
Great episode. 👍
Beautiful footage, Kevin. Thank you for sharing.
This channel never disappoints, i am always wanting more of this !
Thank you Kevin.👏👍⚓️
Always a pleasure when you check in....
Looks like you have everything covered pretty well, knowledge wise too ✅
If I ever run into you on the high seas, I'll definitely stop, Kevin. Keeping an eye out for Ruth Avery on the AIS.
Those were amazing aerial views in the end.

Sailing the Pacific once , never saw bugger all then one night 54 fishing boats all with no radio on , All blind from there lights , Dodging for an hour or two very interesting - Good to see a clean bottom , Makes all the difference on a long haul - Fair winds ( Oh well back to the lawns)
Aye, isn’t this one of your most cheerful vids? To me I get the image of a quite happy Kevin out in the middle of the blue. Even though you don’t live but only exists it looks perfectly fine. Like you had some kind of energy boost.
And I discern some new camera angles. Good work m8!
Thanks MiQ! Not sure about the energy boost, though I was losing weight, so perhaps I was just getting lighter ... Happy New Year, M8!
50-60 miles a day is good compared with the wagon trains of the old west. Wish you a happy new year and safe trip!
Hang in there! US VI is getting closer every minute!
Happy Belated Turkey/Chicken day. Was a nice video. Thank You
That's a lovely boat. I'll have to seek out a boat tour video. I can't get over the underside shots have NO PROPELLER!

Thanks for disclosing the issues you experienced with the "In-Reach," Kevin. I was thinking about buying one of those. Maybe it's wise to hold off for now and learn more about them before parting with my hard earned coins.
Yes, although InReach is still the least expensive, so far as I know. But still I think next voyage I would look into Iridium GO.
@@howtosailoceans1423 InReach is also an Iridium dependent system.
One day just blends into another after a while. Lots of reading material helps pass the time.
Thats funny you mentioned inreach. On your passage I would get duplicate after duplicate of same messages. You look great Kevin. Loved the Prisoners Tee.
InReach does all sorts of crazy things, other people kept getting duplicates as well. Happy New Year mate!

I have the same InReach that you do. I hope mine performs a little better! Seems you are always having trouble with it.
Nice drone shots!
Most weather forecasts compiled by the met people rely heavily on ships 6 hourly reports. Satellite images are fine but they don't tell you the situation on the ground. The route you are sailing is not a normal international shipping route, so sea condition reports would be sparse.
So inspired by your journey and wonder how you afford this lifestyle
The reason no one from the other sailing vessel hailed you was because they were busy trying to post "in the middle of nowhere, with no humans in sight", sad face selfies on facebook. Oh well.
Kevin,
So good to see another installment on your return back across the Atlantic . It was filled with the ups and downs of ... A Sailing Rhythm... while at sea . Oh yes and did you ever move that InReach to another location away from that metal standing rigging . When they say clear sky they mean it ... I have had similar results when there were some obstructions .
Robert
North Star
Yes, I've tried moving the InReach around, but still seems that it only worked at certain times of the day, presumably when satellites where overhead.
@@howtosailoceans1423
Yea , perhaps that is it... I believe that they have sixty or seventy useful satellites they are using for navigation . A lot more than any other company has , so that is why I chose the InReach. Fair Winds Kevin .

The garmin inreach uses the iridium constellation for messaging. Maybe your comms trouble areas are where you are on a sat coverage overlap zone. Where you get 2 sattelites but at an unfavorable angle to both. There is a good animation here. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iridium_satellite_constellation. If you could hook up an better gain antenna that would improve. But i suppose there ir no external antenna plug on the inreach. Thank you for posting! I always keep my eyes out for this trip’s vlog.. happy new year!
Bruno
Thanks for the infoand Happy New Year to you, Bruno!
I would try moving the Inreach away from the standing rigging.
Enjoyed the video. The mobile needs to be on deck so it can see the sky all round I think. D
The mobile is talking to the InReach device via bluetooth, that connection is fine. The problem is between the InReach device and the satellites.
Coming off the back side of a sequel can be unnerving if all ya see is open ocean and cumulous clouds. Wind to you back, sailor!
If you're not already familiar... there are smart phone apps available that track the Iridium satellites and tell you when they'll be overheard. These apps work offshore, too, as all of the telemetry data is downloaded/installed before you leave. We timed our weather downloads to when a satellite was "in range", and it made a world of difference in how quickly/reliably we were able to download passage weather on our eastabout transatlantic. We use the Iridium Go offshore, but I'm pretty certain that the Garmin unit uses the Iridium network. Love your videos, by the way. All sailing!!! This pandemic has kept us stuck in the US - our boat is Portugal - your videos are keeping me sane until we can finally go "home" and back out to sea. Anyway, here is the app on Android: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.blueskynetwork.satfinder&hl=en_US&gl=US And, here is the app on Apple: apps.apple.com/uy/app/iridium-satfinder/id1528250647
Thanks for the info! So it seems that lack of satellite coverage may in fact be the problem. Are you happy with Iridium GO?
@@howtosailoceans1423 Yeah, there is not always a satellite overhead, but they pass by fairly regularly. It seems that they're out of range just long enough for the devices to "time out". We also use an external antenna for the unit, and that apparently helps with reception of weak signals. However, we absolutely experience a lot of "time outs" even with the antenna if we don't wait for a satellite to pass overhead. The satellites orbit in a N-S direction, so where you are on the globe shouldn't matter. As far as being happy... it's a little difficult to be happy with something that costs a small fortune (both for the unit and the service). However, generally, yes, we're pleased with the service. It generally works as advertised -we get our weather, and we can send and receive emails just fine. I haven't compared data rates to the Garmin, so I can't opine on their competitiveness in terms of price. If Garmin is indeed buying time on Iridium satellites, it seems likely that Iridium traffic might take priority (though I have no evidence to support that statement).
👍!!!
Inreach coverage is best at the poles and worst at the equator. Keep it well away from any metal rigging. Have not seen enough to make a specific recommendation. Just discovered your channel.
Kevin, from what I can gather, you have two Garmin devices. The yellow one (GPS) that you use to report your position and the red one (InReach) that you use for messaging and marine weather reports.
Your GPS device seems to work normally. You do have a problem transmitting to Iridium. Either this is a problem with Iridium which I doubt (they provide 100% coverage) or the batteries are getting old in your InReach device. Transmitting requires more power. That device did work in the past, isn’t it?
If you are satisfied with the Marine Weather Reports and since you are already familiar with Garmin products, I would suggest selling both devices and getting the Garmin GPSMAP 86sci which merges the capacity of both devices. The 86sci provides tracking, backup navigation with charts and altimeter/barometer and 3 axis compass that you could use, among other things. Garmin also offers a powered mount which I would get.
Overall, this solution might provide just the right features and capacity that you require. I would investigate this solution before investing in a PredictWind/Iridium solution. I am not sure if that solution offers two-way messaging. Also, it will likely be more expensive. Finally, I would download the 86sci manual from the Garmin web site and read it before going ahead with any purchase. Good luck and thanks for the videos.😎
Thanks for the info! I've charged the InReach all the way up but that never seemed to make a difference.
Great video.. wonder if the other crew saw you. Regarding the in reach, I was watching a German sailor, m jambo on you tube using the in reach mini, bluetiothed to his phone. He didn't experience any inconsistencies on his Atlantic crossings. Perhaps your unit is defectivemin some way? Perhaps Garmin could solve your issues.
Garmin customer service is nearly non-existent. I tried emailing them but my email was returned. The one number I tried calling said there's an estimated 3 hour hold time, with no option to leave a number and have them call you back.
That is,truly bad aftercare. I wonder what comparables are out there. Sat phones I guess, but something like the in reach of works would be great. Did you always have issues with it?
You got a blue on your cameras lens and I spent 5 mins trying to clean my mobile because of it. 😆
✨💯✨👍
Cold air signals higher winds from a classic cold front .... usually lol
This is much more local, convection from a rain squall.

attach you phone to the drone and fly it above the boat so it's nearer the transmitter!
Lol...
are you gonna have a way for the girls to say happy valentines this year? it's getting close, you should prepare!!
(still smiling about that episode ).
I don't know if you already have a HF rig as a backup, but digital modes for HF are kinda a game changer. That and similar advancements to radios to other forms of tech, and they are way smaller, more reliable, and consume much less power. You should look into js8call; you can message and send email on about 5-10 watts of power, and update your position with aprs or WSPR with under half A watt of power. A xeigu g90 would be a good choice. Cheap, small, 20 watts output.
I'm thinking of going with Iridium GO. I do have an SSB receiver which I have used for years.
Dude the little bit of salt water from the sails is the least of ya problems compared with getting Botulism from the top of that fridge lid 7:14 ...Heyzeus on a pogo stick lmao !! you sure got a cast iron stomach pmsl
All sailors have a cast iron stomach ... a little mold on the top of the fridge lid won't hurt nobody ...
Lol
Love your sails, who made them for you
Willis Sails, Kerikeri, NZ. Except for the old yankee which came with the boat, made by Skip Moorehouse.
Thanks for the video, entertaining and a learning experience. I was having a casual conversation with a yacht designer and he mentioned that over his long career he had a problem with a boat with a foam core/glass transom hung rudder that was painted black bottom paint. He mentioned that the color was causing the exposed rudder top to heat up and causing the rudder to distort and bind. I like the look of your black hull but have you had any overheating problems in the tropics with your black hull?
No, not with overheating, I did have a problem years ago with water getting into the plywood core.

so no wind at dusk does that mean a catchup night of sleep :)
Rain squaws too reef or not to reef. I was taught years ago to when in doubt reef
yeeaaaahhh love it, thanks for sharing.
"prisoners rendezvous" sounds like fun, what is/was it?
I think it's a California thing, I'm not local there so I couldn't tell you.
Great videos! Question: What make/model drone do you use?
DJI Phantom 3 standard.
How do you keep an eye out for ships, yachts or floating debris at night? Or while your trying to get some shut eye!? I saw one sailor come about 50 yards from a rusty peice of a ship about the size of a pickup truck just floating around out there.
If you have an AIS it helps. As for floating debris or containers, it is very hard to see and avoid, particularly at night.
Hey Kevin if you ever see Glenayr of Portsmouth NH out there feel free to give me a shout I'd love to have a gam with yah
Can I suggest you turn the Inreach, so that the stubby aerial is not pointing straight up, as there could be a radio frequency null at position....try 45 degrees from straight up ! I'm an amateur radio ham G1 DJT.....
I will give that a try next time, I just expect this new satellite tech to be like cell phones, but apparently we aren't there just yet ...
@@howtosailoceans1423 TBH - I have heard nothing but good reports from others using this devise.. So its worth trying this before abandoning hope.. Best wishes to you..
How do you get your forecasts? I have an old Furuno weather fax machine.... InReach ok.

I r tried to find the vid you did on passage plan from NE USA coast to the keys. I thought it was very good and would like to see it again. What should I search for? Thank you.
I think the series started with the vid "No Weather Window is Perfect" czcams.com/video/hdbZYCGGD2s/video.html and then follows with three more vids after that. Hope that helps.
Not good news on the Garmin. I bought the marine mini. Are you using a cold plate for refrigeration?
Isotherm ASU, yes, a cold "holding" plate.
Save the whales, lose the gams. :) Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to y'all!
I think we could both save the whales and keep the gams ...
You could have gotten an Iridium-Go, but it would have cost you for both the unit and the communicaiton fees.
I may upgrade for my next voyage ...
Does In Reach not provide a coverage map of the ocean so you know if you will have good signal coverage or not?
Not that I know of.
What service do you use to upload your videos?
It has varied. Presently using Sprint/T-Mobile hotspot data. In Europe I used Vodafone hotspot. I used to try to find wifi, but that's often a real pain.
