@@TheBudgetDermatologist We appreciate your practical tips. I changed my approach to skin care after I subscribed to your channel.
I have dry, eczema prone skin complicated by monthly hormonal pimples. I used to follow the Korean skin care fad of 8-10 steps. Which is time consuming, pricey, and I even ended up with more pimples and pimple marks.
Now, I am just following the basics:
      AM:
Salicylic acid or Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser (I use BP cleanser a week prior to my period).
Cerave AM moisturizer with spf 30
      PM:
      Micellar water to remove sunscreen
      Cetaphil cleanser
      Olay Retinol Serum
      Cerave PM moisturizer
No more layering of toners, essences, emulsion, ampoules and masks.
You are absolutely correct that simpler routine works better: easier compliance and it delivers results. I managed my hormonal acne better with this approach.
      Thank you so much!
Love and greetings from the Philippines! 💖

This is the first time I've heard a derm recommend the OTC versions which is great because its a great way to desensitise your skin and work up to tretanoin. I didn't do this, but can see the reasoning. If you are really sensitive, and think you might react, having a 1cm patch of extremely irritated skin is much easier to manage than your whole face, so start with a test patch. I learned this after being prescribed tretanoin over 50 years from the age of 9 (back then it was an oil). Over the years, each time I had to see a derm for rosacea or cystic acne, it would be prescribed again. I was never successful, couldn't get past the first application. More recently, a GP prescribed it for "anti-aging". Now, thanks to CZcams and all the support groups on social media and also COVID lockdown, I summonsed the courage to try again, this time starting with a test spot the size of my finger on the right side of my face and used it as advised (once a week for the first month, then twice a week for the next month, then three times etc). Incredibly, it worked like it was supposed to, eventually not being so reactive. That gave me the confidence to start a spot on the left hand side, and repeat the process.
The marvellous thing about tretanoin is that it travels, so a finger sized spot actually is double that size due to the product travelling. Slowly, the treatment area was expanded in ever widening circles, the immediate skin around it was already semi-adjusted, so it didn't take as long for that area, then the next. It probably took about 6 months in all to be able to tolerate it. Even now after another twelve months, I am still on only 3 times a week, although sometimes I might give it a rev up on the weekends applying it twice in a row.

Thank you for breaking everything down! I was prescribed retinoids as a teen with acne and they always made my face way more red and flaky. All the dermatologist ever said was that I just had to wait out the redness and it would eventually get better. But I'm an impatient person and would just stop using it. I had no idea that I was applying it too soon after washing my face and that it probably would have helped to use a moisturizer first. I also didn't know to start super super slow either. I'm going to give it another go!

So Awesome! I'm giving the skin on my whole body a break from all the products I've been trying and using that are irritating me big time and starting over with your awesome routine, especially knowing that even moving up to just 3 days a week 1x a day you can reap the benefits and I'm sure that's for every part on your body not just your face and neck. I have sensitive skin and I've been ruining it! However, my fav so far is retinaldehyde for face, BHA for arms & MAP Vit C for hands, which I'm sure hydroxy acids, Vitamin C's etc should be added gradually, as well. Thank you Doctor

Thank you for these videos. My mother passed along generally good skin genes and my skincare routine has always been above-average but not always the best. I mostly used Lab Series and Clinique for Men once I was able to afford them but moved to drugstore brands as they've improved. Your videos help instill confidence in drugstore brands (although my dermatologist provides me with a prescription tretinoin solution), and your emphasis on consistency is comforting because I've been consistent for almost 40 years, beginning in my 20s. Being a mid-Boomer, having northern European/British Isles genes, and coming of age during the 60s and 70s and the "get that deep, dark, native tan" era, I did plenty of sun damage to my skin during my youth. My Navy career probably didn't help much and I'm also a life-long avid outdoors athlete. However, my facial complexion receives compliments, the most gratifying being along the lines of "You look like a person who spends a lot of time outdoors, but one who takes good care of his skin." A melanoma on my shoulders, back, or lower extremities isn't out of the question, and I'm 67 now and not far from getting on my final glideslope, but my arrival at the gate should be with a decent countenance. Thank you again!

New subscriber here. SO grateful I found this channel! 💖 You have informed me more in this video than my own dermatologist has in the last year. I just got prescribed a tretenion 0.5% gel and I'm gonna sandwich my moisturizer and start slow. But my question is, once I run out of this (it was $90 for just a small tube and I can't afford to buy that every 3 months 😬) can I use Differin or one of those cream based retinols instead to keep up with the anti-acne & aging benefits without breaking the bank? Will it still benefit my skin to go from something stronger to something a little weaker?

I am so glad I found this channel! I loved the explanations of retinol. I do have a question. Do you think Bakuchiol is an effective alternative to retinol for women who are pregnant and breastfeeding? And how soon after breastfeeding can a woman restart retinol? Thank you! 🥰

You're right about going about using the retinol gradually. I started using the Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 a little over a month ago. I generally have sensitive skin to begin with. I love this product! But I wish I would have listened to you the first time around in your skin care routine video, to use retinol gradually. I was using this almost every night, if not every night. For the first couple of weeks, my skin was fine, great even! Then, boom, my face got red, rough, sooo itchy, painful and really warm to the touch. The only thing I could tolerate on my skin was water. No makeup, nothing. It was soo painful. It started 2 weeks ago and it's just now clearing. I want to use it again, the right way, when I'm sure that my skin is back to normal. Listen to you this time. Lesson learned!!!

Step 1: Is the retinoid right for you?
Step 2: Pick your retinoid product. Types; Prescribed and over the counter. (Consistency and strength) High concentration = more irritation.
Step 3: Put it in skincare properly (night with moisturiser, not with vitamin c and benzoyl peroxide)
Step 4: Start slowly (use once and wait for few days watching out for irritation/redness, then use three times a week and dont use too much)
    Step 5: Be consistent.

Thank you for the easy way to understand retinoids/retinols! Would I be able to use the Olay retinol max, since I have Milia? Or would you suggest another product for my dry, mature and Milia prone skin?
