Das Ensemble Corund
wurde 1993 vom Dirigenten Stephen Smith gegründet mit dem Ziel, das professionelle Chorwesen in der Schweiz zu fördern und den AbsolventInnen der Musikhochschulen eine Plattform für ihre Weiterentwicklung zu bieten. Seitdem übt das Vokalensemble eine engagierte Konzerttätigkeit auf hohem Niveau aus und hat schon weit über 200 Konzerte bestritten.
Der Kern des Ensemble Corund besteht aus 16 SängerInnen, die Besetzung variiert je nach Projekt von 8 bis 40 Stimmen. Das Ensemble Corund ist Vokalensemble, Kammer- und Konzertchor in einem. Für die Bildung eines Chores in sinfonischer Grösse verfügt das Ensemble Corund über eine Kartei von über 400 SängerInnen aus der Schweiz und dem nahen Ausland. Die SängerInnen pflegen in der Regel eine rege Tätigkeit als Gesangssolisten und pädagogen neben ihrer Arbeit im Ensemble Corund und besitzen breite Erfahrung als professionelle Chor und EnsemblesängerInnen. Sie eint das Bestreben nach einem reichen, farbigen, doch homogenen Ensembleklang. In jedem Fall ist eine werktreue, historisch orientierte, zugleich hoch expressive und vitale Wiedergabe das Ziel der Arbeit.
Je nach Programm konzertiert das Ensemble Corund mit dem eigenen Corund Barockorchester (Konzertmeister: Eva Borhi, Igor Karsko) oder andern Orchestern wie Capriccio Basel, la banda ANTIX, Prag Philharmonic, Zuger Sinfonietta, Musikkollegium Winterthur, Zürcher Kammerorchester.

La banda Antix ist ein kleines Ensemble mit grossem Qualitätsanspruch und wird geprägt durch Exklusivität und Einmaligkeit, da sich die bestqualifizierten Musiker in grossem Masse auch als Solisten und Kammermusiker präsentieren. In la banda ANTIX erfüllen sie sich ihren Wunsch nach einem Musizieren in einem Orchester, dem keine Grenzen gesetzt sind. Höchste Professionalität ist die Basis. Ebenso wichtig sind das gemeinsame Musizieren mit Kollegen sowie das Entdecken von musikalischem Neuland.
Stephen Smith
ist ein gefragter Dirigent und Organist. 1955 in Amerika geboren, lebt er seit 1982 in der Schweiz. Seine musikalische Laufbahn begann mit sieben Jahren am Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. Nach Studienabschlüssen in den Fächern Orgel, Kirchenmusik und Dirigieren in den USA und der Schweiz setzt er sich intensiv mit dem geistlichen Repertoire der Renaissance und des Barock auseinander. Insbesondere interessiert ihn die historische Aufführungspraxis. 1993 gründete er das Ensemble Corund. Er ist u.a. als Kantor und Organist an der Matthäuskirche Luzern und als Leiter mehrerer Chöre tätig. Engagements mit seinen Ensembles und als Gastdirigent, organist und -dozent führten ihn nach Spanien, Deutschland, den Bermudas, den USA und durch die Schweiz. Auftritte u. a. am Festival International de Musique Sacrée Fribourg, den Internationalen Musikfestwochen Luzern, Murten Classics, am Savannah Festival, Festival of the Four Arts, Library of Congress Washington, Cleveland Museum of Art Concerts, Trinity Church Wallstreet New York und dem Philadelphia Bach Festival. Zahlreiche CD und Radioaufnahmen zeugen von seinen breit gefächerten musikalischen Interessen und Tätigkeiten.

John Rutter's music always reminds me of a peaceful Christmas eve . A softly burning log in the fireplace, the scent of evergreen boughs, and snow gently falling outside. Peace on Earth and goodwill towards men.

I know! A chorus I belonged to groaned at singing Rutter, but his pieces are crowd pleasers.
Brilliantly done, my father is a fan of the Kings College choirs over the decades, so I've heard it many time through the KCC records, but this one is fresh and so well done. The chamber orchestra is brilliant, the voices are rich.....very well done !

The Christmas season isn't complete until I play the few Ensemble Corund carols that are available on CZcams several times. Alas, there is no DVD available for this concert.
I woke up with this playing in my head. What an evil thing the Coronavirus has done, to silence choral music! Bar closings and live sport cancellations don't bother me. This does. Many years ago I even was fortunate enough to perform in a choral group at Boston's Symphony Hall. Recently I've been more of a spectator, seeing The Boston Camerata and others. The only two things I like about Christmas are the lights and the music. Now there are only recordings.

I don't appreciate Rutter because I feel he is very derivative and very commercial, but this group makes his work sound like a shining diamond. Makes the arrangement shine.
If "commercial and derivative" means understandable, than I hope Rutter continues to write carols for a long time. I much prefer to listen to songs with discernible and meaningful words than those "high church" numbers sung in Latin any day!
