The QUIETEST Keyboard Switches I've EVER HEARD! - GamaKay Switches

  • Over the years, I’ve tried my fair share of keyboard switches, but I mainly stuck to the widely available ones that come pre-installed on keyboards. Well, today I decided it was time for me to get into something a little more exotic. And that’s what we’re doing, on your boot sequence.
    Personally, when I started to delve into the mechanical keyboard game, I naturally chose Blue switches. I dont know why, but it seems like overall, as a beginner clicky blues just SCREAM at you “ I’m finally a gamer with a mechanical keyboard” That’s Until you’re about 3 months into owning that keyboard and you realize that the keyboard is literally just screaming at you. Especially at night.
    Anyways, since those beginner days, I’ve been trying all kinds of switches and I’ve landed on these. At home, I use good old cherry MX reds, and at work I use a razer keyboard that has the razor yellow switch. But im trying to get more into custom stuff, so I asked some companies to send me some switches, and voila. My current collection. I got Gateron, Cherry, Kailh, and Gamakays. I do have to respect very specific conditions. What we’re looking for here are the stealthiest switches. So let’s listen up.
    Now there’s a winner here, and it's these right here. They’re called Phoenix Silent switches and they’re made by gamakay. I also have their bumblebee and crystal switches here, but they’re more of a standard linear switch.

    Great video! I could never understand why gamers go to great lengths to build a quiet computer, only to pair it with a mechanical keyboard that sound like a bunch of legos bouncing around in a plastic box. Maybe you could do a video showing how you mod a keyboard to make it even quieter.

I was researching to see if anything has changed in the world of switches, and man! I was glad to find this video! Clicky mechanical keyboards drive me insane (a bit of a sensory trigger)! • @nytalix642
    @nytalix642 Před rokem +14

    The switches with the box stems are literally called box stems or sometimes called dust-proof. I personally don't care about the wobble unless I can really feel it when typing. If you're planning on making more switch reviews, try focusing on what the typing experience is like and make a short sound test.
    On the switches, they look like they're using outemu molds, and combined with the price point, I'm a little worried with how will these switches hold up in the long run. The stock outemu red, blue, and brown switches are known to stop working over time after just a couple of weeks.

    • @motoryzen
      @motoryzen Před rokem +1

      He did a short sound test..towards the first half or first third of the video.

    • @BootSequence
      @BootSequence  Před rokem +3

      no, they're not called box stems. It's box switches.The reason why they're called box is because the switch assembly is in a dust/water resistant box. They're mistakenly called box because of the stems. As for future reviews, I did a soundtest, but you're right, maybe a keyboard sound test with the entire keyboard filled with the switch im reviewing is probably a good idea.

    • @nytalix642
      @nytalix642 Před rokem +1

      @@BootSequence Sure, they are classified as box switches because of the stems, but I usually avoid calling newer switches with boxy stems as box switches.
      The original box switches from Kailh is what I normally call box switches, like Box browns, or Box whites. I might just be old fashioned
      EDIT: Because Kailh specifically has box in the name for their box series of switches, it distinguishes that line from Kailh's other non-boxed switches.
      I know points behind why a box stem is designed, I've just encountered a lot of switches with box stem designs who sometimes call the stems as dust-proof
      Just a disclaimer, I might have sounded negative or aggressive with my first comment, I'm not very good at explaining my point sometimes

    • @goonfish
      @goonfish Před rokem +1

      @@nytalix642 No, you misunderstand. BOX switches aren't called so because of the stems at all - it has nothing to do with the stems whatsoever. BOX switches from Kailh are specifically called such because the entire switch leaf & actuation bumper (a rubber piece, not another terminal leaf) _is literally enclosed in a dust & water-proof boxed enclosure_. Take apart a Kailh BOX and see.
      The square stems you see are correctly called Dustproof stems, because that's all they are! If you want to get technical, Kailh BOX switches also have Dustproof stems, and again, arent called Box switches because of them. The only difference is that Kailh uses their own specially designed dustproof stems to work with their BOXes & their clickbars.

    While you're swimming around in the mechanical keyboard community pool, have you come across any keyboards or keys that feature a half-width CAPS LOCK key? That's something IBM had in many of their early models to help avoid toggling CL on and off when typing, but none\very few of the current manufacturers make them like that these days. I wonder if it was maybe a patented idea that requires licensing to be used, and that's why it's not common. I'd love to get a replacement key for my K70 cos the gap between the CAPS LOCK and A is tiny :-/

    • @MrIamsosmrt
      @MrIamsosmrt Před rokem +2

      That's called a stepped caps lock key. You can't just replace a normal caps lock keycap with a stepped one because the switch for the sepped keycap is not in the middle of the keycap and more to the left in the high part of tthe keycap.

    Thanks for the video. One of the only ones I can see regarding the phoenix switches. I would have liked a comparison against other silent switches along with their price points with and without mods. I can appreciate this is an effort though.
    For example, comparing something like alpaca V2 with lube and films and without would be interesting as these are around twice the price of the phoenixes. People keep recommending I need to lube/film alpacas due to stem wobble.
    Then a comparison with outemu peaches as they are similar price point as well as the new heartbeat linears. Unfortunately their shipping to the UK is too expensive from canonkeys so their value drops heavily but as you're US it would be interesting.
    I have purchased the phoenixes as they are the first switch I'll be using for a solderable PCB so less money wasted if I mess it up and the shipping was only £4.

    I have the gammakay phoenixes.. and they are quite possibly the loudest silent switch I have ever tried. If you want absolute quiet, check out the outemu honey peaches. They're a little mushier than the phoenixes.. but SOOO much more quiet. If you want quiet with a better bottom out feel, then you should try the Wuque Studios WS silent linears.. which are quieter than the phoenix's.. and feel better bottoming out.

    Hello everyone, maybe someone could help me out. I have a Corsair Platinum XT cherry blue keyboard and ohh my im so over it cause its so loud. But i have no idea what brand switches would work on my keyboard trying to find something quiet to game at home and not wake anyone up. Cherry red seems nice but so confused of what would work and what wont plus i know ill need to do a lot of desolder and resoldering haha

    • @BootSequence

      all 3 pins will! and those are 5 pins, so make sure yours has the little post holes that make it a 5 pin. Or you'll have to waste time cutting off the 2 plastic posts.

    Great reveiw!! I got phoenix and crystal, and I was really amazed stem stability and kind of noble typing feel with Crystal. Basically I am silent linear switch guy, started from cherry silent red, and went through many (kailh deep sea, box silent pink, Sakurio, Roselio, and so on). Crystal is far from silent. It's very loud and I can hear spling noise. But I can't get away from typing feel of crystal now...

      Sound(No lube, w/ PBT ESC keycap, no hard hit): Sakurio is clearly quietest. Roserio is second. Deep sea and Phoenix are in 3rd group. Phoenix contains light, plastic-chattering like noise with key cap. It's comparison in silent category. Crystal is far louder than all of them :)
      Stem stability: Phoenix is best, Deep sea is 2nd (very close to Phoenix), Roselio wobbles very much and Sakurio wobbles even more. Crystal is ridiculously stable.
