  • Which of the batteries do you think will be the fastest ? You can be very surprised at the result.
If you like trains, then the simple electric train will be very enjoyable for you .The electromagnetic track is very fun.
you need these three parts to making the track.
    1. copper wire raw
    2. battery ( AAA, AA or C )
    3. and two neodymium magnets ( it must be larger in diameter than battery )
If you have all the components so fun can start.

The internal resistance of the battery is an important factor. The battery is short circuited by the copper wire so the internal resistance is what limits the current flow. Two cells could have the same voltage and capacity, but the one with the lowest internal resistance will produce a stronger magnetic field.

There's something really cool happening here, I wonder if anyone noticed. The batteries aren't moving at a constant rate, they're speeding up and slowing down with a beat. They're oscillating...
It took a good bit of thinking to work out what's actually going on here. I think you've basically built a standard inductor/capacitor oscillator, only instead of using a capacitor to store the potential energy, it's being stored as kinetic energy. The effect is the same though. ... That's awesome!

I think it is a combination internal and external capacity that will makes the battery go faster, because external capacity by itself will weight it down and cause air drag. If the battery is to move faster it will need a size not affected by air drag and weight and a large internal capacity to hold the charges that produce the energy.

Yes, it is old school. Primarily because the average kid doesn't have access to a lathe with which to make sufficiently precise copper coils, money for copper wire, room to store their track, or time to spend putting it all together with a 50-60 hour week between time in school and homework based on ~2015 numbers, ignoring the fact that 1 in 5 have jobs on top of that, often working more than the legally mandated limit in their state. That doesn't included extra curriculars, which are increasingly mandatory as fodder for college enrollment, nor the increasing number of schools with community service and similar requirements. It's almost as if, as a result of society having been systematically geared towards consumptive behaviour and exploitative capital generation, our youth is increasingly tailored for the purpose of an adulthood of capital generation to the benefit of a few who live in a state of relative humanity. But, yeah. Old School.

    The mechanism is as follows:
The battery creates a current inside the solenoid (the coil) on the section bounded by the battery. Any solenoid that carries a current will create a magnetic field. That is, that part of the coil will behave as a magnet having two poles. If you place the "real" magnets in such way to repeal the generated magnet, the repulsion force will cause the "battery vehicle" to move.

After watching this, I realized something: the *worst* battery is almost certain to win this race!
A AA battery *must* produce a certain minimum number of volts and amps -- if it doesn't, it won't work at all for its intended purpose.
Thus, there are only two ways to vary the design of the battery:
    1) * Increase * (above the minimums) the number of amps/volts the battery produces. Most, but not all, devices will throttle the extra potential current and thus improve battery life. See lithium ion batteries -- great battery life, but high cost.
    2) Put more or less reactant in the battery.
There is an upper limit for the amount of reactant that can be placed in a battery, but... The lower limit is very low. Reducing reactant loads is thus an obvious way to reduce costs, so it makes sense that the cheaper batteries would have inferior battery life. In *this* scenario, however, the most relevant fact is that reducing the amount of reactants reduces the * mass * of the battery, which (since the force applied to the battery is a function of volts and amps) increases acceleration and therefore velocity.

It’s a possibility, but that copper wire would be way too expensive to set up around the world. Roads are cheaper to build, and the car industry would lose a ton of money.

I notice the "Train" is rotating on it's axis - is this mechanically induced by the spiral wound wire, or the electormagnetic force acting on the battery? Super cool demo by the way!

Yes it could indeed. I personally believe the only reason this isn't implemented into other uses. Is because batteries and magnets deplete fairly quickly.
