  • In this episode, we spend a day in the historic port city of Messina, Sicily! We try to track down a deep-fried mozzarella sandwich called a Rustici - but will we find it?? We climb to the top of the clock tower which houses the biggest and most complex mechanical and astronomical clock in the world, and hit the city streets to discover what this Sicilian city has to offer!
Messina is known as the door of Sicily and a crucial port and gateway to the Mediterranean sea and Italy. It is the 3rd largest city in Sicily and a cruise port in the province of Messina, Italy. Devastated by major earthquakes as well as bombings in World War 2, Messina is an ancient city with a very modern touch, as most of the buildings and structures have been rebuilt in the last 100 years.

"Rustici" usually refers to some street food that you can find in a rosticceria or panetteria. It is a generic term for that kind of food. What you were looking for is called "mozzarella in carrozza" (lit. mozzarella in a wagon")

Thank you for being in our beautiful town (I am from Messina). Some people use to think that we have not much; instead I can surely say that my town is a quite nice place. I also hope that citizens were friendly as they always are (that is one of the reasons why Sicilian people are famous in all the world).
I hope you would come back again if you can.
Although you didn't eat our tipical "Mozzarella in carrozza" (what you called "fried mozzarella"), I hope you enjoyed our city and, as a matter of fact, I am sorry you couldn't visit more places and monuments...we really have a quite number of it in our city.
Nice video anf Thank you again :)

I have been to Messina and the clock is absolutely amazing, considering it's age and the mechanics in it's build. I especially love it when it plays Ave Maria and the little church rises. I love the animals and the rooster that rotate. My grandfather used to talk about that clock so we made sure we went to see it when we went to Italy. Keep up your great travels and enjoy. I don't really know how many under this video are from Messina, but anyway, I come from the province of Messina (I live in a town in the area), consequently I am from Messina. Ask a person from Messina what he thinks of this city and he will answer you with the biggest insults possible. (Bad management, bad bureaucracy, good mayor, but hated by bad citizens) As an essay said "One thing is good in Messina, the arancini". The "Rustici" are practically any type of fried food that can be eaten by hand. Fried potatoes, arancini, pidoni, and mozzarella in carrozza (Which actually isn't consumed as much in Messina, or at least, not as much as arancini and messinese focaccia).
The dirty streets you have come across are only a few of those in Messina. A great example of bad bureaucracy are the famous sheet metal shacks of Messina, present due to the 1908 earthquake that completely destroyed the city (The few buildings that remained intact were inexplicably demolished by the police present to deal with the damage).
About the "Bridge of Messina"... please don't talk about this. It's an idea from the 1950's, the problem is not ecologic, but economic. The money had to come from the north of Italy, and.. well, they will not come. With the covid problem and the EU economic support they say "We will make the Messina Bridge!"... i hope.

Надеюсь , что жители Мессины не забыли , что русские моряки , рискуя жизнью , спасали их предков , во время землятрясения , в 1908-м году.

How many days do you suggest to spend in Messina? One day is enough?

Hey John, yes we felt that one day was enough to visit Messina! 🥰

You cannot really visit all of Messina in one day; not if you wish to explore Tirone, go shopping and walk up to the Sacra Re. There isso much of Messina that's off the beaten track but within walking distance.

Messina, in reality, is a city where it's not worth any of your time. The cracked, run down streets and gloomy, dying vibe of a town that's authenticity was destroyed years ago in a massive earthquake and is slowly dying again due to economic troubles. My cruise ship stopped there for 2 days because of a storm. If you ever have to dock here, just go straight to beautiful Taormina, you won't miss anything interesting.
