Good job Rickie…..it’s great that Victoria was included in the video today.
Thanks Vee! It was fun to have her with me 😊
Your dog think she is made of suger 😁 so wen it´s raining she doesn´t she go outside 😊
It´s really like to watch our videos and wish that I also could move to a warmer contry and renovate house 😊😊
Hello Ricky, nice to see your project to renovate your beautiful home, and glad to see Victoria in this video this time as well. Warm regards from Jogja, Indonesia.
Poppy is so full of joy!!! I am so glad she picked you!!!
She really is a little bundle of joy…& energy! 😂
Flexibility is important. Plans change and it seems smart to expend energy on fixing up the structure that is already there. Love those dogs!
Thanks Reet 😊 On one hand it’s disappointing as I really wanted to build that cabin, but on the other hand, we’re so excited to renovate the small stone building!
Can't agree with you more, Ricky. There's nothing that beats the look and smell of a freshly mowed lawn!
Weeding always a tough task, but you did well and hope the grass seeds take soon, especially after the timeousl rain too just after sowing.
Can see why you are so excited about the next reno project. Going to be amazing. Will follow your progress keenly.
Teddie still a loveable sweetie and Poppie has grown into a beautiful young 'lady' . What personalities they both have.
Newly planted fruit trees looking good.....well done, Victoria and Ricky.
Thank you Marlene, what a lovely comment ❤️
It would be good to number your episodes so fans could keep up with your latest stuff in the proper sequence. Your audio is always excellent as are the visuals. Keep up the good work!
A cover crop like clover is a beautiful (and nitrogen fixing and medicinal and edible) solution to weedy lawns. A lawn of clover is a dream. You can buy bulk seeds online. Not telling you what to do ... just letting you know in case you hadn't considered it. :) Should have added that clover literally chokes out weed growth. Plus clover is heavenly to walk on. A real joy!
Thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely look into it…anything to avoid weeding again! 😂
@@LifebyLiving It's a miracle against weeds if you tend it in its seeding and infancy. Then it will just grow abundantly on its own ... you can even help to scatter its own seeds when the times come. You can mix it with grass seeds too ... but in honesty it will likely overpower your grass too. Which means waaaaaay less mowing. But it looks like you find mowing therapeutic (it's raking for me) , so you might want to mull it over first. You've gotta have at least one therapeutic job to restore your good soul, right? anyway, good luck!
@@LifebyLiving Hate to tell you Rick but you will NEVER stop weeding, one of Mother Nature's never ending pests!! Ugh!!
Lovely to see Victoria and the mad rescue dog lol
😂 she definitely woke up in a funny mood that day! The dog, not Victoria 😁
Your videos are a pleasure to watch. Both you and Victoria are very calm people, and poppy and Ted are wonderful dog's 😊
Thank you Nicola. What a kind comment 😊
You both adapt so well when there are changes! Flexibility is a must when you are building!
Hello Rickie & Victoria, The weeds are deeper rooted than the grass, to really clear the weeds it's most likely you will have to kill the weeds off and then over seed the whole area, you could do it in sections to make it easier. Mowing is therapeutic your right there Rickie. really enjoyed your video's I've started with your first one and moving up. You two take care love the dogs too, so pleased you took poppy on and got her well, homed and loved... Peter.
It’s going to be interesting to follow the renovation of the old stone structure. I think that’s a much better choice than the original plan. You’ll get so much experience that will come in handy when you’re ready to tackle the main house. And aren’t you lucky to have a friend in Theo that can give you advice from his experience. I think I’m a “pointing expert” just by watching him do it so much. 🤣😂 How nice to see Victoria, what a lovely gal!
You both should be sp proud of yourselves.
Ricky that stone conversion is going to be amazing, excited to follow your journey!
Thank you! It will be A LOT of work but so worth it in the end! 😊
A side addition of a floor based bedroom with bath would be cost effective and look great.
Great idea but that would require planning permission from the local council which is a nightmare here!
Ricky and Victoria, the plum tree if it is a Victoria Plum tree, it is supposed to be self pollinating. I have had one for year's and I haven't had any fruit so far. If it's not you will need a 2nd one unless there is one near by. I know you need 2 Pear Trees and 2 Apple Trees but not sure about the other Trees. The best of luck with your new project. I am really looking forward to seeing the transformation of it. 👍😉🇮🇪☘️
Another enjoyable vlog and so nice to see a little more of Victoria (and the doggos too!)
Thanks Gail 😊
You are making wonderful progress with your land. I love loquats! You are blessed to have the right climate to grow them. Looking forward to watching you renovate the little cottage building. Thank you for sharing your lives with us.
Thanks Connie ❤️ The Portuguese climate really is incredible for growing!
Excited to follow the new renovation. Great to see Victoria in this video, she's a natural in front of the camera! Beautiful fruit trees!
Thanks Juanita 😊
We use to do that in North Carolina, USA before we planted new seed, just as you are doing. We called it THATCHING where you take a rake and get the dead grass out.
The moment you talked about putting up a tiny house to live in while renovating the chalet i was like why not renovate the tiny house, already there😊😊. All those fruit trees yummy. Both my dogs love the water, rain not so much.
Look at the little modern cottage CZcams channel. They are in Portugal (I think) or maybe Spain and they just built a very beautiful affordable cottage which won design build awards. They tell you how much it cost to build. You may find inspiration and may even be able to meet them in person and see the cottage up close to see if it would work for your space down the road.
i agree, i love cutting my lawn 😀
It sounds very interesting and exciting! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you have rain in your part of Portugal! Sorry about the weeds!
What a lovely video! Wonderful to see Victoria…what a sweetheart! Your channel is my new absolute favorite! So relaxing and wonderful to see your progress! Love the doggies, too! Many blessings to both of you!!
Thank you ZeeCee! I feel honoured to be your new favourite channel ❤️
@@LifebyLiving You are most welcome and much appreciated!!
Ricky, you are one helluva chap . You are not afraid to roll up your sleeves and get to work. The challenges can be daunting. You take them one at a time and those challenges turn into
satisfaction. It will be interesting what the homestead will look like a year from now. We are on this journey with you. Sending you much love🙏❤🙏 Jim , Harriet and Yuki Richmond, Va.
Thank you all. I look forward to your comment every time I post a video! Always so kind & thoughtful ❤️ Wishing the three of you a fantastic happiness filled week 😊
Also, the last snow in the spring, sow seed because the melting snow draws the seed down in the soil.
Great job on that huge lawn and looking forward to the reno journey on your “new” old tiny house! Loved that Victoria joined in this time and a treat to see your doggies having fun with mom and dad .❤️☮️
Thanks for watching Esmerelda! 😊
Good luck Ricky and Victoria, your orchard and the renovation of the little house will be beautiful, i'm sure.👏👏👏
Thank you Maria! 😊
I love the dog, so much fun to watch.
They’re VERY entertaining! 😁
Great job. You guys have a beautiful place.
Ricky your dogs are so happy, one crazier than other, but I think all that happiness is for being rescued from certain death. Pure gratitude.🐈🐕❤️
She is definitely grateful. I’ve never met a clingier dog!😁
It seems you have an abundance of oranges Victoria, you might try your hand at making Marmalade. What do you think? So good on biscuits!!
If you have any fence wiring left you might make some baskets around the trunks of your new trees to keep your furry friends from weeing on them.
07/01/23
Exciting times, well done both of you. Good to see the dogs enjoying each others company.
Thank you Jean! They LOVE each other’s company
Hi Ricky thank you for sharing your project, another quality upload. 👍
Thank you! I’m trying out some different editing styles at the moment so I really appreciate the feedback 😊
@@LifebyLiving Super-Süper (Turkish) lol.
Hi. First thought was Poppy was behaving like a sheep dog - herding you as you weeded. You may have a working dog there. If you continue to hand weed suggest you buy a hand weeding tool. It pivots and rocks the whole root out effortlessly. Brilliant efficient tool.
Re the mezzanine I would be inclined to forget that. Instead build a platform with drawers that slide out for storage and in the furtherest areas use access horizontal doors such as getting into a cellar. On the platform build a murphy bed and have seating that is easily moved. Styles for murphy beds have become highly functional. Still build storage above the bathroom and your positioning of the kitchen sounds like a sensorary delight (something that would be important to me). Actually you could do a platform in the kitchen too. Think tiny home meets tiny apartment tricks meets farm root cellars. I was pleased to see how quickly your land greened. More work with weeds but doesn't it make you feel alive, seeing your surrounds wake up. Thanks for the update. Your videos and voice are like a friendly armchair chat.
Thanks Chris. I like your description of a friendly armchair chat 🙂 The idea that you’ve described about the mezzanine/platform is exactly what we’re doing! The first level of the mezzanine will be about 1.5m high with dog cabins & lots of storage underneath. We’re unsure at the moment whether we’ll have our bed on that platform or on the next section above the bathroom. Still very much planning the finer details!
@@LifebyLiving As hot air rises I would avoid living and sleeping in the higher space of the cottage. It is a hard fall to ground level from 1.5 metres, and building a safety railing in such a small space would be significant visual clutter. I would be leaning towards a single step up platform, ie around 12 inches high. With drawers and cellar doors access you will have an amazing amount of storage.
At the end of the day I assume this cottage will be used by short term visitors or transient workers who will be travelling light. Or elderly relatives who may have difficulty negotiating more than one step. So better to build for your guests, not for you - your needs are different. If you can get a shipping container onto your property, they can be put to many uses, eg storage, speciality mushroom farm, workshop, production kitchen, studio.
Oh, so good too see all the family….. hi Victoria 👍
Terrific video, nice to see Victoria and the doggies running too.
It will be a great renovation on the little cottage. Looking forward to watching it.
Nice selection of fruit trees. And the work on the huge lawn will pay off I’m sure.
Poppy was frisky good to see, she is a sweet little dog. Yes after a rain, lots of smells in the air seems to make some doggies really animated.
Be well and enjoy the adventure :-)
Thanks Sue! 😊 I think ‘frisky’ is a GREAT word to describe Poppy! She’s a handful! 😂
I just love this channel and Ricky 's work ethic! If you need anyone to help you pull weeds , I will come and help - it is sooo therapeutic!!!
Thank you Rinatha! 😊 I may have to take you up on that offer one day as I really dislike weeding! 😂
What a good idea to renovate the house, I am sure you will love it. But of course it will be a lot of hard work for you as well. Your fruit trees are super, I wish I could have citrus in my garden but in Denmark it is not possible. I have a poly tunnel but do we get hard frost it is still a big problem, so I will have to enjoy you being able to grow them instead. Your lawn is beautiful and a wonderful play ground for your dogs and I am very impressed how you removed all the weed, respect from me. All the best to you and Victoria.
Thank you Eva 😊 The Portuguese climate is amazing for growing! We do get a slight frost in the mornings in the darkest parts of winter, but the orange trees seem to survive without any issue so fingers crossed these new trees will too 🤞🏼
Plz use eye protection when mowing, Thor machine can send small stones flying.
And earprotection also.
I love that little dog ❤️
Love your ideas!
I don't know a lot about fruit trees, but I've heard other people mention that sometimes you need two plants for pollination. Maybe check with a fruit grower? Good luck!
We’ve been told this by a few other people with regards to the peach & plum. We do have other single fruit trees on the property & they bare fruit every year so I’m not sure what to believe
That little stone house is great, esp. having all those windows which is not something you find that easily. I am looking forward learning from your project (yep, me lazy) as we have a similar sized Xist House to renovate. I am sure your energetic dogs will be great helpers 🙂
I know, it’s so rare to have one window let alone three! It was one of the reasons that we feel in love with it 😊
in more recent years I've encouraged more broadleaf plants in our grass to create a wild flower area. I'm in the UK mind so I get your fire risk worries.
Good luck with the adapted project Ricky & Victoria. Looking forward to seeing the renovation.
Thanks Raymonda! 😊
Loved the video and the Dogs.
I love your doggos ❣️🐾🐾❣️
Sounds like a wonderful idea Ricky! Where will you live during the renovation? I just had a quick thought… would it be cheaper and easier to purchase a pre made structure like Al did from LUMNAH? I know several people have built out sheds to house on some channels I watch. The Amish do a wonderful job with sheds to homes.I know at one point you could get 10% off ordering off Lumnah & Al asked the guy if he could get 10% off and he told him yes. So.. Al purchased a storage for his firewood. Always worth a try to ask you never know if you decide to check from that particular company. Either way good luck. I love how beautiful your property is! I am happy you have several structures on your property! Nice to see Victoria today! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻Blessings
plant clover - it is much more resilient than grass, and a good ground cover as well as being good for bees and grazing animals.
A couple of other people recommended clover too so definitely going to look into it 😊
Hello! That’s a whole lot of grass to weed 😂 can you get organic weed killer? I had some for my allotment. Great to see the garden looking lush and green again, all our gardens needed it 💚
Lovely to see Victoria too, think it’s just Poppy who loves the rain 😂 Have a great week 👍
We do actually have some weed & feed which we’ve used up around the house but it’s too expensive to use on that pasture. It’s 2000sqm! I’m not expecting a perfect lawn, just want to tip the balance back in favour of the grass! 😂
@@LifebyLiving oh yes 😆 that is a lot 😂
Highly recommend a weeding knife, dude!
Tap rooted weeds, in particular, are very difficult - and slow to pull out. (As you know.....!)
That little house will be beautiful 😍
I sure hope so! 😊
Watched from the USA!
I love the idea of the stone structure being renovated... after seeing Theo and Bee do it, I have been hooked on them... Can't wait to see yours take shape... Hello to Victoria, nice to see you on this one... Cheers for sharing Ricky, love your camera work!
Great to see Poppy so happy - it is obvious how much she is loved by the two of you! I love the fruit trees too !
She is dearly loved. An absolute handful at times though! 😂
You’re such a sweet couple, entertaining and fun to watch. My husband and I are in our late sixties and we’ve spent the last 18 months renovating a property next door to ours. It was a lot of hard work but we learnt so much and acquired many new skills. Just a suggestion re pulling weeds, you could try a pointed trowel to lift the weeds and get the roots out.. we wish you well in your endeavours and look forward to seeing you settled.
Lunatic dogs are most entertaining canines. We celebrate the calm ones and the nut cases!
😂
JUST DYING TO FOLLOW THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE NEW TINY HOUSE
Thanks Legrand!
Another great visit to Portugal before heading out to work. When it comes to grass and weeds I know that grass will win out if you just keep taking the tops off the weeds once a week. I have cleared patches of bramble in the past and just mowing once a week on a high setting keeps them down and the grass takes over. A fruit forest will be an amazing addition to the farm.
I think just frequent weekly mowing helps so much! Like you say, kills off the weeds & strengthens the grass
The new project is very exciting it will be great I am sure ....the fruit trees look nice and healthy hope they give you a good crop...the dogs are beautiful they get along together just fine 🙂 good to see Victoria xx
The dogs absolutely love each other’s company!
Some pole to stablish and secure the trees would be useful
My husband finds mowing the lawn therapeutic too!
I want a ride on mower or a tractor so I can go out cutting the grass for hours!
Renovating the stone cottage does make more financial sense. It's great you have found a builder you like. In areas where there is a lot more weeds than grass, I often just dig or till it all, rake then reseed, or cover the area with cardboard or layers of newspapers, add soil on top & reseed.
There are other areas that we’ll till & reseed, but we’re happy with this field being a little weedy 😁
When you mow with a catcher on you also take away the grass seeds so they can’t naturally replenish them selves. When the grass is seeding mow without a catcher and let it go back into the pasture. Not only will the seeds stay with the pasture it will also help feed the soil. You can also buy a pasture spray that takes out weeds but not the grass. Makes life easier when you have larger areas to do.
The cost of wood anywhere in the U.S. is horrible, also. Don't feel it is just Portugal. If you are doing the roof, at least you have lots of experience, since you did so much work helping Theo & Bee. That should help you a lot. Good luck with your new plan.
Thank you Bev 😊
LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THE WORK BEGIN. PORTUGAL LOOKS VERY INVITING. WILL BE WATCHING YOUR PROGRESS
Thanks Willa! 😊 The Portuguese countryside really is hard to beat ❤️
I really appreciate hard-working people like you! You work a lot, you are a fantastic person! Good luck with everything!
Thank you so much! Such a kind comment ❤️
Great to catch up. I dread weeding a few borders seeing that area I’d lose the will to live Ricky 😂😂.
Yeah I’m not a fan of weeding either! 😂 Don’t want to have to do that again!
Wow massive project, but ut will be beautiful.
MASSIVE project…but it will be so worth it in the end!
Its a lot of work ahead for you both--but well worth it in the end
So nice to see Victoria. Hope she will be more in the videos.
Love seeing you both working together.
Oh yes I will be watching the making of a tiny home. It will take a little while to fix it but you can do it. No doubt. My dogs won't go outside if it is raining. You can tell the terrier dog is smart and full of life. So much fun to watch. Thanks for sharing.
Your dogs sound like Teddy! If it’s raining he is SOOOO reluctant to go out! 😂
You got lovely doggies and a pretty wife ❤
Thank you! Couldn’t agree more 😊 I’m a lucky man
The cottage plans sound great.
Lovely
Glad you are planting fruit trees!!
I hope your fruit trees take and grow well !
Lovely to see happy dogs!
Happy to see the new planned project for your living quarters and it was lovely to finally see Victoria 😊 Love those pups 🥰😘
That was a huge area to weed! Wow! Looked very nice and I'm sure your grass will be popping up in a couple weeks time. I love your pups! He's so 'kicked-back' and easy going & she [Poppy] is a funny goofball! Love her playfulness! ❤️ Cheers to you both!
They are polar opposites! 😂 They do get along very well though ❤️
Hi from Washington state. I'm so proud of you for taking on the "Get more Experience Project" in the next renovation. You have a strong tiny house already and glad you're going to use it.
It was nice to have a Poppy Fix and a Victoria fix all in the same video. Way to go on the grass. The broad leaf weed is actually like spinach and is totally edible cooked or in a salad. Free food.
Oh wow I didn’t know that! Will have to go pick some & give it a taste. We eat loads of spinach!
Love the plans for the cottage upgrade, it's going to be very interesting to see how it comes along. Have a great week, look forward to the next video, from South Africa 🇿🇦🎉
Thanks Lyn! It’ll be an interesting journey that’s for sure! You have a fantastic week too 😊
Can't wait to follow the stone conversion!!!!!!!
I had a lowquat tree for years. It was great. Unfortunately all of a sudden the entire tree fell over. It was about 30? ft tall.
Nice seeing Victoria.
Wow! It just feel over for no reason at all?!
@@LifebyLiving There was a 6"X 10" section at the bottom on one side that lost it's bark (that i suddenly noticed). I ignored it but i guess i shouldn't have. Because then the tree just fell over. Luckily it was next to a shed, so it kinda leaned over against the shed all of a sudden. Thank goodness it didn't cave the shed in. My son said "what do you MEAN the tree fell over onto the shed". He thought i was hallucinating, i guess. 😣😁 Luckily no damage. He cut it all up. The bad news is, there is also a missing piece of bark at the bottom of the gigantic Florida live oak in the back yard. Houses on all four sides. It will cost a fortune, (that we don't have), to cut down. Omg.
It will be fun to watch the renovation of the old building.
Great video!😊
Thank you Sherry! ❤️
Lovely to meet Victoria - you make a great team.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful farm with us and also your great progress and plans 😀
You’re very welcome. Thank you both for watching 😊
Lovely couple! I've been really enjoying your channel. Thanks for sharing. 💚
Thank you Elsa! ❤️
Good luck with renovation. Nice to see Victoria .
Thank you! 😊
Looking forward to follow your plans for fixing the stone house.
yay! The fruit trees are all planted!
Thanks for sharing. Good to see you again. Take care.
Thanks for watching Yvonne ❤️ Have a great week!
Great to see the rest of the family. Love having fruit trees. Had an excellent crop of plums this year and some tasty pears. It would be great to grow oranges, lemons and grapefruit. Perhaps with climate change it might be possible !!
Good luck with your change of plans! Laura 🍻
Thank you Laura 😊
I really like your plans for renovating that little cottage. Later on down the line it would be great guest accommodations, or a vacation rental. Love the start of your fruit orchard.
That’s the plan! Once we’ve finished the main house reno & moved in then we’ll have the little stone cottage for lots of visits from friends & family 😊
