Air Jordan 11: Behind the Design
If you’ve been around twitter, IG, Snap, Facebook, do people still use facebook? Anyway, If you’ve been on social media, you’ve heard more than enough people say that that Air Jordan 11 is their grail or even that they really love this shoe. But why? Well, here everything you need to know and you can tell me if any of this even matters. Lets go.
Starting with design of the shoe, Tinker Hatfield, the man who had designed almost every Jordan since the 3, actually designed the shoe in secret. Nike, at the time, wasn’t sure that Mike would be returning and thought the Jordan line would be over. Tinker though that even if Mike was really done playing basketball, that he had a large enough following and a big enough name that people would buy his kicks regardless.
One of the key elements of the shoe is the patent leather. It honestly changed they way that sneakers were made at the time. Tinker, watching game tape of Michael playing, happened to notice that Mike would roll over the top of his shoes when changing direction, and this slowed him down. Patent leather was stronger and could withstand the force of the change. Often called the mudguard, the patent leather actually served two purposes. Tinker wanted to create something that looked good both on and off the court for Mike. Rumor has it, that MJ wanted something he could wear with a suit, and the patent leather fit the bill.
That brings us to the upper. A new nylon ballistic mesh was added that lead up to the padded collar. Called cordura nylon or sometimes cordura mesh, the material is ultra-lightweight and manages to maintains its strength, despite its elasticity. Tinker also included a webbing around the midfoot that adheres to the shape of your foot. It works with your foot to keep you locked in.
MJ introd the popular Concord Colorway of the Jordan 11 in the playoffs in 1995 and not many people know this, but he was fined for wearing them. Back then, your shoes had to better match your uniform and MJ had to pay the fine for 2 games. Fun fact, for game 3 of the playoffs, he wore the Air Flight One also known as Penny Hardaway’s shoe and but he cut off Penny’s logo on the heel tab. Talk about being petty
Double Fun fact, when he wore these in the playoffs in 1995, Jordan and the Bulls lost to the Orlando Magic, but you don’t often hear about that part. But to be fair, Jordan also wore them in the playoffs in 1996 which started their second 3-Peat so can you really complain?
When it comes to the Air Jordan 11, they have been dropping during the holiday season since 2009. Technically it was 2008 when the countdown pack dropped in December, but as a single sneaker, it was 2009 with the Space Jam retro, which retro’d again last year.
Since the shoes launch, Tinker, a legend in his own right, has called the Jordan 11 his favorite design. As for Michael, he feels the same way. The Bulls did go 72-10 that year, and he won the MVP for the Finals, regular season, and the all-star game. Not to mention his fourth NBA championship.
So it the design that makes it a grail, is it Tinker, is the carbon fiber shank plate? Is it Michael Jordan, or is it a mix of all those things. Either way, this is easily one of the most influential if not the most loved sneaker of the modern era. And that goes for those that are sneakerheads and those that aren’t. Especially when it comes to this Concord Colorway.

the feel of them the, the look with the patent leather. and when i wear the i feel more confident for some reason. the go with almost anything. wore them to my graduation with my suit.

Yo! Those dust bags are NICE!!! I"m a big fan of the AJ XIs because it was the epitome of sneaker design and sneaker tech at the time....where most sneakers today are actually built using those same materials. Plus it was MJ's comeback shoe....and I couldn't afford them as a kid. The AJ XI have a lot of nostalgia associated with them for me....from the concords to the playoffs editions.
First of all I love your videos and I really didn't like the 11's at first but then I got a a pair of the football cleats and they were the 11's and they were so comfortable and now they are my Grail just like the air 32's

I vividly remember those Bulls runs & when he first wore em,I spent my summers in Chicago,It's my grail because it always eluded me,from not being able to afford em as a kid to immediate sell outs & crowd anxiety later,It was never in the cards for this one.It's a different nostalgia with finally owning something coveted from your childhood.

History behind the shoes and timeless design makes it a grail - will never go out of style like a good quality casual/dress shoe never will! When these popped up on MJs feet in 95, we were blown away by the fresh sporty yet dressy look - so dope!

I like this shoe a lot...I did pick up my first pair of concords this past weekend. Wouldn’t consider it my grail though. But the balance of the shoe is what makes it so dope. The way the lines flow. The minimalist black and white colorway. And I believe in 1996, kicks magazine rated it #1 that year.
2011 was the year I got really into kicks as a freshman in HS and I wanted these so bad I always loved how they look so hopefully I can get these 7 years later

Grail status due to perfection! Perfect season, perfect comeback, perfect history, all in one makes this shoe a piece of history and status to strive for greatness as it once did in the goat’s feet. Now a days its status, old head are reminiscent and young kids want to know what that greatness feels like.
History and Nostalgia, Seen lose in the playoffs to a Nick Anderson steal from behind on Mike but then seen Micheal and the bulls win all 3 of they're 3 peat NBA Titles again and always loved the style and design of this shoe.
Jacques, you made the question and you answered it. For me, a grial must have all the things you just mentioned and this sillouet has them. Design, history, player, technology, recognition. Soooo yeah, it's a grial.
Was that a friends and family pack you received? I ask because I received exclusive access from SNKRS App and received my concords last week but they didnt come with the dust bags
Growing up poor, watching Jordan play in 1995 ... I was about 13 yrs old. When the 11s came out we just couldn't afford it.... all my friends had them and I wanted the shoe so bad... many years later (35 now) I've got the 72-10s; the Barron 11s; the space jam 11s; the win like 96 11s; and as of yesterday 2 pairs of the 2018 release of the grail concords... yes two pairs! Not to me to mention all other retro jordans mainly 1-14 collection. So for me it started with the 11s.... It's a memorable shoe for me that started as a kid, and will always be my go to shoe over all others as an adult.

These are my grails for many reasons. I love how they are lightweight and look surprising sleek since most Jordan’s have that bulky look. The comfort of them is much better than most of the retro Jordan’s that I have ever owned. The patent letter makes the shoe pop to the point that I can wear them with a T-shirt and shorts or to a black and white tuxedo at a wedding. Lastly, the carbon fiber makes the shoe feel that much sturdier and who doesn’t love the look of carbon fiber.
I always liked shoes, but after these, i got hooked...it was LOVE. Basketball and shoes was perfect. And from that day on, the shoes mattered with the game itself

Since we got the OG box instead the typical 11 box it would have been dope if they gave us shoe bags to store them in. Or stitched the 45 on the back. Still happy with my pair!

This is the grail for me, 5th grade i got a pair of bred 11 for my first ever Jordan, since then it’s been my favorite. I have 12 pairs of 11’s and only a couple pairs of 6s and 12s. That’s why the 11 is my grail

Same here, J1s, 3-5s. Old School ish. But came to like the 11s back in 2010, 9s, 10s, some 6s and starting to like the He Got Game 13. With different colorways and true backstories & history of certain models, my opinions continually evolves. Not on hypebeast mode, but starting to come around to those Diffused Blue & the Infrared 6s.

When I was in 6th grade about 12 years old I was really great full that my mom got me these shoes unfortunately I couldn't get them for retail and I got them for 445$, fast forward to now I'm 15 in 9th grade playing basketball in this shoe. The look of the shoe is so amazing and the performance of the shoe is fantastic especially the bottom you would not slip at all on the court such icon shoe!
I have the concords and the only reason they the are best is because you can’t go wrong with them. They are easy to wear. You can dress up or keep it casual.
Normally I wear UK 6.5 in 11s but I have to take a 7 in these. They cut a little different from cap and gown and also the win like pairs...dope shoes regardless 🔥🔥🔥

These were the first Jordans really to really truly change the landscape of what you can do with a shoe. When they first came out, people lost their minds because it was such a different thing that had never been done before. This she literally changed the game as we know it as it pertains to both the general sneaker world and also basketball sneakers and signature lines. This was also one of the real first shoes Jordan and Tinker began to "Tinker" around with fresh creative and "out of the box" concepts. (See what i did there?)... anyways. You catch my point!!

for me it’s a grail ever since i had a game one day and a kid on the other team was wearing them and with the court lights hitting on the black patent leather, i couldn’t take my eyes off of them, i was in awe. went home and found they were like 500$ and i usually barely spent over 70$ on shoes. 2018 and i have some money and i can finally own my dream shoes, i could careless if everyone is wearing them

For me it like MJ had the perfect year in 96....for me..I graduated HS in 96...I played basketball and as a team we voted to wear these that season...but every player couldn't afford them...so with team being first we opted for the Air Flight One aka Penny 1s....personally I never own a pair...so in a sense it's one of my grails....EVERYBODY loves this shoe...yoh see a whole family rocking them...
