HBO Max's VELMA is apparently based off the Scooby-Doo franchise, but you wouldn't know that from watching it. From its very adult content, to its totally different, race-swapped characters, gay Velma (and Daphne!) and just TERRIBLE writing, it's safe to say fans of the actual Scooby-Doo should stay far away!

I'm a Black male, baby boomer who grew up watching Scooby-Doo. I enjoyed it as a child and have fond memories of Scooby. I probably spent hundreds of hours sitting in front of the old "cathode ray tube" TV's watching it on weekends. I'm tired of all this race swapping.
There are 1000s of cultures all over the world, and I would think that those cultures would have a right to celebrate themselves. Race swapping is "racism" by another name. Every culture has the desire to represent themselves without others destroying or altering their works. To me, it is demeaning for one group to race swap another because it makes the "swappers" seem inferior. It says that they don't have the creativity, intelligence, or planning to create their own, they are piggy-backing off of someone else's success.
Why race swap which is the easy and cheap route, a lack of creativity? Create an original ideal and implement it. Respect others and build your own.

This is so incredibly obvious and annoying to us POCs who watch the shows, because it tells us that the writer can't be bothered to explore our culture, but he still wants us to support him idea, because he made the character black, Asian or Hispanic, etc.
If the writer wants to support minority cultures he can do it by writing existing IPs that celebrate them like black panther, etc. Or create new IPs about such cultures like the princess and the frog, everything everywhere all at once, Encanto, Coco, etc.

just another point of why the show sucks - the lazy character writing ties into the race swapping. making shaggy black really has no impact besides the removal of his goofy voice (sadly). same thing with Daphne who being Asian contributes nothing. the problem with her character is that she is a teen being overly sexualized (obviously not ok).

But in reality what happen? They heavily ruined, disrespected, made fun of the 10s of millions of Scooby Doo fans, they heavily hurt and made millions of big Fred fans feel so awful, in the end they did not hurt anyone but all the fans like wtf, sigh, this is just a sad disaster. Has all the earmarks of a modern show:
    -Remake
    -Race swapping
-Changes sexual orientation of classic characters
-Writers have no concept of what the original show was about
-Written/produced by a so-called "oppressed" class that is actually from a privileged family
    -Hates the source material
-Never took the time to research said source material
-Hates fans of the source material
-Hates the stereotypical white male strawman (manbaby, tiny d*ck jokes, etc)
    -Pushes a woke agenda
-Blames the fans for failing (maybe not yet, but just wait)
There's probably more, but all modern craptertaiment to come out of Hollywood shares at least a few of these concepts. It's gotten to the point that I can't get excited for anything entertainment wise anymore. Hell, the Dead Space remake, as good as it looks, made one of the original characters a lesbian, which had absolutely nothing to do with the story, and it was just thrown in there because "muh representation". Thankfully, my kids have rejected the wokery for the most part and have been looking up 90's classics on their own like Home Alone.
I think it's like an addict. Sometimes you have to let them hit absolute rock bottom before they turn their life around. It's no different in woke Hollywood, until the money dries up and they shift course, we're still going to be getting this crap. Maybe that's a good thing and people turn off the TV and actually go outside. We'll see.

(Episode 4) She noticed the cigar store Indian was hollow before Fred discovers the map hidden inside
(Episode 5) She caught motion on the tracking device in Scooby’s collar, allowing the gang to intercept a trapped Scooby and save him from being run over by a train.
(Episode 10) She was the only member of the gang who remembered a coin was involved when the ghost clown hypnotized his victims, despite being in a trance.

Fred was the moral Anker of the group (unintentionally represented in a sailors uniform) being stoic and confident in the pursuit of what’s right while Velma overlooked the danger in exchange for clues, research and investigation. They were all the opposite of shaggy and Scooby who always like… wanted to come back during the day. It was a fun dynamic that ALSO showed that these diverse stereotypes of jock, nerd, popular girl and hippie could still be friends.
