"Crip Camp" and the disability rights movement

- The new Netflix documentary, "Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution," tells the story of teenagers with disabilities who attended an upstate New York summer camp in 1971 would go on to become powerful leaders in the disability rights movement. Correspondent Rita Braver talks with Jim LeBrecht, who - 50 years after attending Camp Jened - collaborated with Emmy-winning filmmaker Nicole Newnham on their acclaimed documentary, now shortlisted for an Academy Award. Braver also talks with activist Judy Heumann about how the Camp Jened experience inspired her in advocating for the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Our nation is so disconnected from disability history it's embarrassing! I was born disabled and 'Crip Camp' on Netflix (most disabled people can't afford Netflix) is the first time I've heard about our equal rights history! We need to do this again but this time, fighting for home health care, lower Medicare premiums, Marriage equality (removing the marriage penalty for benefits) and raising benefits about the minimum wage of every state!

So glad you did this piece and posted it. More people should know what people with disabilities have done to get the respect-- and accessibility--they deserve.
Used to assist disabled who went on scuba diving charter trips. Was so enlightening the freedom they had being weightless and able explore what the marine environment has to offer, the fish, kelp forests and more.

Yes they did and I’m beyond grateful to them for standing up & fighting to be treated like everyone else because of their efforts I & others like me have the rights and accessibility there is now. They spoke up at a time when we were not seen as humans but rather looked upon as though we could easily be thrown away and stuck in an institution which happened to many;they said we matter @ we deserve better when I saw this I laughed & I cried I’m so proud of theses special people they’re awesome!!❤️❤️
I saw it on Netflix while in lockdown last summer. For me it was a unique film that followed some of the campers from their teens in the 1970s through the 2010s.
As a person with a learning disability who was in special education from pre school to my last day of high school almost ten years ago. Love this i need to watch this film
When I was about 13 years old ,I inadvertently came across a late night movie 🎥 playing on television 📺 called “The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter“ about a deaf man locked in a hearing world, starring Alan Arkin and the late, great Cicely Tyson. I was so startled by the ending-sobbing uncontrollable tears-that I never mad fun of a handicapped person(I never really did anyway)again. That movie made me champion the underdog and those less fortunate than me to be born in a world that is less than kind to those not considered ‘normal’. I implore anyone who hasn’t seen that movie 🎥 to please give it a watch and you’ll understand what I mean.🙏😘👍

That is awesome. I myself have disabilities we may look a little different on the outside but we are normal on the inside. It is wonderful to be treated normal.

I just watched the documentary and was amazing. The capital crawl protest absolutely broke my heart.
I saw the footage from "crippled camp," and was immediately reminded of "Tortuga " by Rudolpho Anaya!

I'm 61 born with Spina Bifida. This should be shown again today because this country needs to get with the times meaning alot of small towns get away with not having ramps. Our Post Office won't even put a ramp up and there is plenty of room to get it done. Nobody enforces the Disability Act. This documentary is awesome.
I never realized that during the time my ankle was in a cast that I was classified as a disabled...
I realized this fact when I was about to board an MRT to go to the mall that they showed me the way ahead to the disabled seat...
I always thought I was just an injured person that time...
I was staggered I didn't thought of myself as one of them, because I always thought of a way to move around and do things by myself...
Hmm well no you still weren't actually disabled. An injury like a broken foot etc isn't really the same as it will eventually heal. A disability will not.
Many older buildings are still not fully accessible...including my physiatrist's (rehab doctor) private office! As so many boomers live on..and on...and on, they are in for a surprise.

Best job ever was 2 yrs working with adults in a day program. They are awesome!! Retired now, and sure miss them all.

Everyone needs to learn this part of American history.. our families matter.. we are not charity nor inspiration porn..I’m a parent & grandparent of people who happened to use wheelchairs.. I knew this history & I knew Judith’s work.. but seeing the footage.. I cried.. I’m so grateful for all the folks, people with disabilities, families & allies.. that fought so hard so my family can be proud & have access.. because they fought.. I fight.. & the fighting is never over.. we have many issues in our community... this is an amazing.. funny, brave movie..
Yes, This is important - whether you are one who prefers People first language ( Like I do) or identity first language - It's Important to see how Individuals with disabilities have always had to fight for their basic human rights and dignity - All students should be made to see this documentary film.

This was a great movie
I first learned of this film from a CZcams channel Squirmy and Grubs (highly recommend). It’s excellent and is just scratching the surface of common sense changes that need to be made. Thanks to the Obamas for producing this awesome and enlightening film.

“CBS This Morning”, since watching “Crip Camp”, I’m sharing “Crip Camp” with everyone I can. My friend Michele watched and told me about “Crip Camp”. After telling me about “Crip Camp”, I watched it. After watching it, she posted about it on Facebook. Our friend Cathy and her youngest child Robin watched it. She asked her mom, “Is this real?”. “Yes it is”, she said. Personally, I firmly believe everyone, with or without a disability should see it.

It occurred to me about halfway through the video that thanks to these people, I'm protected by the ADA for my mental illness. I got a little emotional after that.
Me too I am incredibly grateful to these amazing souls disabilities are challenging and sometimes painful(physical @ otherwise)but that does NOT mean we are less than everyone else we matter & are just as important as everyone else.

I remember when Clint Eastwood complained about the ADA saying it cost his business too much.
The disabilities act was a good thing but it was limited and took way too long to enact. This world would be a much better place if everyone put themselves in other people's places or to quote the old saying "walk a mile in my shoes". The disabled only want an to be treated fairly and given a chance. The Obamas have done a very good thing and all should watch this film. The world would be a terrible place without love and acceptance of one another.

remember.. . late 80s .. college.... the day i went to the library as usual.. and saw.... the press, and spectators... a disabled student... was dragging himself up the stairs.. .. to illustrate what he had to go through.. .. to get into and out of the library if he had no help to push his wheel chair up and down the stairs. He said in the press.... ADA... mandated a wheel chair ramp, and full access to facilties....so he could roll himself up and get access to this core college building and other buildings like other students. ...something the rest of us took for granted and hadn't noticed the struggles of other students. .... thank God for the awakening and activism.
Normal is a setting on my dryer. Everyone is different whether walking erect (not all physical/mental attributes are visible) or gliding in a chair and or scooter. We have had to fight like so many others to even be seen, period. The fight wages on to this day and long after I am gone for countless generations, infinity.

Disability can happen to anyone anywhere at any time for any reason or for no reason at all imagine how you would feel if you were discriminated solely on the basis of your perceived disability and told what you could or couldn't do or told that you were less than you are a second rate citizen and that you didn't deserve rights think about that the next time you say why do people with disabilities deserve equal treatment or why do people with disabilities deserve to be protected under the law

When I saw the words "Crip Camp," I thought it was a get together for the LA street gang.
I'm assuming the interview is cool, but could you please at the very least caption this video? It's performative to give a platform for disabled activists to speak, base your content on disabled people, and then make that same content inaccessible to disabled people. There's a common phrase, "nothing about us without us". You can't make content about disabled people and then exclude disabled people from being able to access that same content. Captioning is not that difficult, and you have an entire production team. Do better.

Now if we could just get idiots to quit parking in handicapped spots when they don’t have a hang tag or license plate. And to stop treating those with disabilities so shamefully when they speak out against their illegal activity. Just watched a disgusting video about a man in a wheelchair who spoke up. The culprit followed him into the store, started pushing him in his wheelchair back outside, not sure if he deliberately tipped the chair or something else happened but the gentleman fell out of his chair and broke his wrist. Where in the world has human decency gone to?
