Andy "aTrippyFarmer" Dole is a 6th generation farmer from Central Illinois. On this farm, Andy works alongside his father, Marty, his uncles, Chris and Jeff, and his sister, Katie, to grow corn and soybeans on some of the finest dirt in the world. Andy and his family are deeply rooted in the area, operating a large farm that traces it origins back into the 1800s. Although some tracts did not stand the test of time, Andy and his family still grow corn and soybeans on fields that have been in the family for longer than even the oldest members of the farm have been alive. We do, we have, and we always will take tremendous pride in calling this piece of paradise our home. Andy was a Bronze Tablet graduate of the University of Illinois in the field of Crop Sciences, following the same path as his father and late grandfather.
It would be misleading for Andy to claim that this life is one that came by chance; rather, as a member of two multi-generational farm families, it was simply in his blood. His passion for agriculture traces back to his early youth--some of his fondest, earliest memories being of days spent riding in the combine with his father and grandfather. Although his understanding of the lifestyle was much less complex in the beginning, the love he has for farming, and its industry has only appreciated through time. As this dream blossomed into adulthood, Andy now works relentlessly, and tirelessly, to chase his own dreams and to build a farming operation of his own alongside his family.
We, as a whole operation, are handymen, electricians, mechanics, landscapers, accountants, economists, caretakers, stewards, and, most importantly, farmers, and we take an incredible amount of pride in our work. There is no challenge too overwhelming, no situation too stressful, and no problem too difficult for us to take on, and we want to take you along with us. Welcome to our farm and welcome to our lives. You have the best seat in the house to watch the everyday chaos of farming unfold--we usually only get concerned when things aren't going wrong!

Growing up, we had Massey Ferguson tractors. Similar reasons: the dealer was fairly close, they did a great job supporting us, the price for us was cheaper than other brands. Years later, we are mostly JD because most other dealers are 50+ miles away.
That’s a similar story to a lot of folks that run Deere. Other brands just didn’t keep up, especially during the farm crisis.
I worked on a farm that had a Case 245 which ran a Greenstar guidance system and that combo of brands ran the smoothest and most accurate of all tractor guidance systems I have used.
Great video with allot of great info. Keep them video's coming. Be safe

I’m glad you mentioned Fendt , if they was in our area I would probably buy one , but there isn’t a dealer for over 100 miles , and that’s just not gonna cut it when you needs parts fixed asap

Brian from Brian's Farming Videos just started a lease on a brand new Fendt 1038. When the dealer came out to inspect it they found the front wheel seal leaking. The part is going to take a while to come in and they had a loaner out there pretty fast. So it does seem that they stick to their promise. Go check his videos out, I think you would like them.
Just came here after his newest one lol
I’ve watched many of Brian’s videos, though I don’t stay fully up to date on the farm CZcamsrs. I think that is a perfect example of support after sales. I would caution everyone to consider that Brian most likely gets favorable treatment from Fendt as a brand. I think there are deals going on there that promote some bias on his end, but I do think his content is very genuine. He is a great representation of farmers like me!
In the end even the best dealer support can't make up for a bad design ... Just ask Mike Mitchell
@@Jorrie86 Very true. John Deere may be expensive but what brand isn't anymore. John Deere from what I hear has always been, and will always be well worth the investment.
Most of the time I inspect our equipment and handle the repairs for the most part, since I have gone through the schooling for repairing most farm machinery
I think service training is probably the most valuable skill that a full-time farmer could learn. I wish I had some mechanical experience. I majored in book work and agronomy, but that stuff isn’t even that difficult!!
How someone hasn't recruited you for sales is beyond me. Very fluid explanation of the subject
With companies starting to sponsor my videos, I have been moved to sales in a roundabout way.

I am aware I am writing this months after the videos realease but I want to put out the situation smaller farms like us are in. We run late 90s equipment before technology was intergrated into the equipment. For us this makes it really easy to run different brand equipment (a case 7250 on a johndeere 7200 planter). Now for us to get into guidance systems is confusing. We could spend the money and go all out John Deere but to do this it would cost more than two of our tractors combined. For us it makes more sence to run systems like agleader because of the price even though it is less ideal compared to John Deere. Additionally, even with we went to a John Deere system, none of our John Deere equipment is set up to run this technology even though they where made by the same brand. For example our 7200 series planter can not run prescription maps because it does not have electric drive. With this we would be spending the money on the technology to make simple guidelines that we could do with a out of date off brand company. Thanks for bearing with me and my bad spelling😂 it’s a complicated topic for a 14 year old.
Get some A-frame barricades and flashing lights for the tile holes - Big enough to show over the corn and beans. 52:21 youll need the lockbolt socket for the lights a- keyed bolt like locking lug nuts
Don’t remember if I’ve commented this yet here but talking about planters, we’re upgrading from an 8r40 to a 16r40 3pt planter this year as we found a cheap one from a retired farmer. Should be interesting for me getting used to a planter that big.
That’ll be awesome! I’m going from a 40’ to a 60’, and I think that’ll be a big adjustment for me.
You’ve got the best “Printer “ model I’ve ever owned
Thank you!!!
Was a day late to watch this but good explanation on the brands of equipment. From what I can tell here in saskatchewan, we do have quite a bit of john deere dealerships but in my area I'm starting to see alot of claas lexions and fendt ideals(and some case) combines more often. From what I've researched alot of that goes with the prices due to Canadian prices being so expensive as combines generally range from 800k to 1.3 mil. One thing I see is there is generally alot more john deere tractors and I imagine cause they are pretty reliable. And even I agree john deere do look quite nice. When it comes to seeding tractors, I generally see just the case steigers or john deere 9 series', due to the good horsepower they have and what u need to pull air seeders.
Anyways awesome video and keep up the awesome vids!
Thanks for the great comment. I think the Claas and Fendt are much more tempting to farmers that are looking for change. They are stylish, powerful, and innovative machines. Deere does all of the same, but there’s not as much attraction to something that you’ve always ran. It’ll be interesting to see if these farms stick with the other brands or if they come back home to case and Deere.
I became a John Deere fan when I read that the John Deere refused to foreclose on farmers during the Great Depression. He said that J.D. would get paid eventually, and they did. Corporate culture and a man of your word is everything!
That is a good example of standing behind your customers during hard times. There are a few farming financial institutions that didn’t do the same. I know some farmers have yet to forgive them 40 years later.
@@aTrippyFarmer Thanks for the reply. We pray that your family is protected from the storms.
@@DDA40Xman thank you! We didn’t get much of anything with the last system. The nearest tornados were 45 miles north and 30 miles south. I am optimistic that Tuesday will be another underwhelming weather day for us, but only time will tell!!
Might wanna reconsider that. JD has been real shady with their refusal to allow farmers to access the software required to repair their own tractors
Get some Multi Seal Flat-out tire sealant for the Gator. That stuff is awesome. It will take care of those leaks for good on the Gator. Fought different flats for over a year on our Gator. Got this stuff and done.
Interesting. I need to invest in some newer plugging kits!
Great explanation of equipment and marketing Andy! You said a mouthful on both accounts, and I agree. The jabs between red and green gives us some humor to live for:) Our dad was an International Harvester mechanic, so we can attest that they do break down, but I sure get excited when a red one beats a green one at a tractor pull! Great video once again 👏 👍 👌
With that John Deere combine, it’s only a matter of time before you fully commit to the green team… 😎
All the colors have their issues and yes it’s all in good fun. We use all JD even though we’ve used Case combines in the past but don’t anymore.
Here is why I’m Deere. I buy stuff about 5 years old, use it for 10-15 years, and sell it for more than I paid for it.
I do love the old Internationals. They were always way ahead of Deere. In the 70’s they had true rotor combines and proper MFWD. Their are all kinds of sleepers out there. Ford, White etc…
Also, I have Deere dealers all around me. That support is priceless.
It’s crazy to see the resale value in the current market. We sold a 2013 tractor for 30% more than what we paid for it. The only catch is that we bought a replacement tractor that was 80% more new than the old one. There is definitely some funky math going on in the current marketplace.
I am a big fan of other tractors. It is just hard to sneak them into the rotation to even attempt to try.
Thanks for the comment!!
What’s up Andy Great Explanation on The Why’s & Why Not’s in regards to A Farmer & His/Her Equipment Preference.
LOOKS 👀 Like You Need A NEW Windshield Wiper the one on your Gator Doesn’t Look 👀 Like It’s doing “ANYTHING “ AT ALL 😎
Most farm equipment windshield wipers are worthless… some rainX would do more than those silly things!!!
Deere monitors are hands down the best in the market considering ease of use, simplicity, while maintaining the ability to do very complicated and involved management if desired.
That’s what I’ve gathered from many farmers!
Yes id agree fully. But also fendt once you understand it can do it all. And id add the new case pro 1200. Got on in an optum at work. Incredible screen for their first new gen
@@twatner09 I have personally used the new Fendt integrated monitor system and the Pro 700. I have not used the Pro 1200 but have not heard great things concerning reliability (Case to Case system btw). They sound good when they work lol. The deere's have their own issues, but almost all of those for us seem to be related to 4g connectivity, so might not even be Deere's fault given our poor signal coverage.
I wonder how the Big Bud tractors are going to do well in this market, I have high hopes! LESS sensors and tech and more mechanical stuff. That Big Cat engine in that tractor is going to do amazing stuff
I think there is a major demand in the market for new equipment that isn't complicated. Big Bud carries the reputation to be exactly that!!!
Fantastic video! Thanks so much for providing us with so much background info - like hedging. Can you do an in-depth video on hedging? I'm not a farmer, but I believe it's a fascinating topic.
Haha that would be a very long video!!!
Did you have any damage from the storms? I was glued to Ryan Hall Y’all all day 3/31 checking maps of all the farmers I watch trying to keep up with all the tornadoes touching down. Looked like they missed Mattoon
I’ve been watching Ryan’s channel as well. He makes great content! We missed pretty much everything by a long shot. 45 miles to the north and 35 miles to the south were the closest tornados. There is another shot tomorrow, so we will pray for safety!
@@aTrippyFarmer I scroll thru maps like a crazy woman trying to keep track of the farms & tornadoes. Ivers have fields in Robinson, one touched down there but missed their farms. Crazy tornado season this year for sure.
First! Waiting on that hour long episode!
Haha thanks for your enthusiasm!!
How do you have your SCVs matched to your DB60 planter? Great video! Can’t wait to see both planters in the field!
I’m not sure that I am following your question… 1 and 2 are both running a pressure and return. 3,4 and 5 are all pressure lines for the vacuums.
Rable rable rable.... how dare you be so resonable and reflected! rable rable rable!! HAHA
Having multiple Deere dealers within 25 miles is a huge benefit.
Yes it is. We only use 1 or 2, but the selection definitely helps with parts availability.
i swear i know this road at 4:30 lol, are you around olney by chance?
No that is Route 16 South of Mattoon!
Service is my top of my list assuming everything else including price and specs is close.
I think service is the top point for most farms!!!
Late to this video, but is there any benefit from parts commonality? IE same filters, fittings, etc.?
Yes and no. There’s some things that are commutable, but there are other parts that are unique to each machine.
Howdy trippy
Hey there! Have a good week!
Hey Andy! I thought the newer jd planters have an easy fold option that allows you to just press easy fold and it does it all for you.
Someone warned me not to use the easy fold on the DB planters. If that isn’t true, then I’ll just use that!
I way that Hague’s fitting in that shed if a 9620 r won’t fit the hagie will be taller then that tractor
I googled the specs of the Hagie. It is supposedly the same height as our 9460Rs. You are probably right… I’m just optimistic!
Our tractors have registration Plates. You have pay small amounts of tax for tractors.
That is interesting. Some people in the US argue that tractors should be licensed to recoup any kind of road wear that they create. It is a fair point.
@@aTrippyFarmer In all fairness any grain farming that is done where I am from is small scale compared to yourself. Those farmers will be using tractors for haulage the way you use semi trailers. A lot of the time that grain is used to feed livestock and dose not have to be moved far
@@aTrippyFarmerI don’t think it’s fair to be honest. We’re rarely using the roads compared to your average driver🤷🏻♂️

Hey you're getting a sprayer!
You finally convinced me!
Fendt got bought by AGCO and is made with Challenger and Massey Ferguson in Jackson MN
I’ve seen some of the new Fendt’s roll off the line in MN. They look great!!
Only the tracked machines are made in the USA. All other Fendt tractors come from Marktoberdorf in Germany.
Hi Andy , does John Deere 8310r and 9460r has refrigerator ? Plz tell me
Refrigerators weren’t standard when these were ordered. Our newer S780 and 8r370 have one.
Brian Brown currently has a loaner Fendt tractor until his is repaired. He's waiting for parts and his is disassembled in his hoop barn. They sent him a black one he's regretting not specking black when he got his 😏❤️🖖🇺🇲
The Fendt’s sure do look pretty!!!
You talk about mapping must you do that every year?
No. I haven’t actually mapped all of our fields before. It was mostly just auto steer lines.
And Hartung is an engineer for John Deere, but that’s how important close dealerships & available parts are.
Yes. They have had good luck with Case. Ron would probably run an X9, but he is a little biased on that one!
@@aTrippyFarmer yep, with good reason. 😀
Odd the dealer doesn’t clean your tractor Ours comes back fully cleaned every time our equipment is at the dealership
There are some dealerships that do something like that. Our local case construction does that. It’s not like it’s free…
@@aTrippyFarmer they don’t send us a bill. If that’s what you mean. It’s no biggy. Just when you bring it home it looks brand new. I’m guessing you probably have a good power washer so it don’t matter. Good luck on yohr spring planting.
I would agree with everything except resale as a good reason. With the internet a farmer can see what every model the same as theirs is being advertised for or sold for on auction all over the world. Might make more difference when buying new and trading but buying used and trading the spread has tightened over the years. With the tools we have at our fingertips in this age if a farmer is concerned about resale they should be selling the old machine themselves
That is a great point that I overlooked. I do think that my logic holds true if you are trading at a different brand’s dealership, but you can capture better return on your own. There are some tax implications with that route that do discourage outright sales. Thanks for the comment!
Great video! Back in the mid 60s to early 80s, my daddy had a Ford tractor, a couple of Massey Fergusons, multiple John Deeres, and an Allis-Chalmers because at the time he needed another tractor, John Deere did not have one. The Ford broke down frequently. The Allis-Chalmers was a piece of junk and a constant headache. The Massey Fergusons were okay, but the John Deeres were far and away more reliable and durable than the others. So yeah, such an experience back then would today sway me toward John Deere.
That’s all that it takes… one series of bad experiences! Deere could’ve been better, or it just had better luck than the competition. Thanks for the comment!
I'd have to agree, the Greenstar system or the John Deere planting/guidance is seriously top notch and to switch from something so refined is a downgrade to say the least. The bottom line is JD and CNH are always going to hold the lions share of the AG industry here in the US.
You don't know what the best auto steer is till you run an AGco Fendt system !!
I’ve heard great things about Fendt’s system!!!
If there’s a way to get more money from everyday people it will happen. So grain prices following fertilisers wouldn’t be surprising at all.
They follow each other prettyyyy closely!
Not Ag Pro (John Deere Dealer network). If I was all John Deere, I would switch to all fendt or case immediately if I wasn’t red already. Ag Pro’s dealer network bought up all of the family owned dealerships and now doesn’t even stock the most common parts and either tells me to drive to another dealership or wait until the next few days for them to get the part. Absolutely disappointing and frustrating. I will do anything to stay away from them, not because of Deere, but because of Ag Pro
I’ve heard stories like that with all of these dealerships merging and getting bought out. Our local dealership only has 4 stores, and we are lucky to deal with the main one. I have also worked with Sloan’s, which is a fairly large group of stores now. I’ve had good experiences with them as well. I think it all comes down to the management and leadership. It sucks for farmers like you, though, to get a bad dealership out of the deal. That’s exactly the point I was making about service and parts. Hope spring goes well for you!!
It seems like you guys got a lot of bigger utility tractors.
Yes we do. They mostly do mowing. I would argue that they aren’t the best use of funds, but my dad likes them.
Hi from oz Andy. JD does have good gear but not the best of everything. I found fendt are the best tractors still even though owned by agco. When still independent company that only made tractors they ruled the world for quality, reliability, resale , fuel efficiency etc. that proven by biggest farming magazines from UK, France and Germany when they tested lot of tractors of same size every year. For fodder conservation gear Europe is 10 years ahead of USA and Krone balers run rings aroun everything else on the market.
I agree with your points! There is no simple choice for the best product in every industry. I do think that Fendt’s would dominate the tractor marketplace if they could break the chokehold that Deere has in the United States.
we used to run alot of red but 20 years ago we went all green, and won’t go back
It’s hard to say that there isn’t some awesome red equipment, but the Deere stuff is just too hard not to like!!
Made me laugh to see we went aren't the only ones that's been pumping up the tyre on the gator for the last year!! What do u think about the price of buying, running and repairing a gator. Ours was full cab with proper doors not glass, heaters extra LED lights. One light that new now is £30.000 in Wales UK!!! For a glorified golf buggy!! We found it crap in wet ground. We sold ours n bought twin cab pickup few year old 20.000miles heated seat sat nav and saved a small fortune. When we bought our first ATV ( mule ) around 15years ago I wanna say it was about £6.000. if u parked the mule and gator side by side ye the gators abit more luxurious but £14.000 difference!!! Ridiculous! Anyway keep up the good work, would love to come and experience your farms over there. We have a big tractor for round here but small compared to your John deeres lol
I have mixed feelings about the gator. This one is nearly 10 years old, so I am sure that they’ve gotten better. It has some flaws and reliability issues that bother me, but it always gets the job done. If I were doing it again, I would probably go with a Polaris UTV of some sort. Everything is expensive now. I’m sure this gator would be pushing 20-25,000, but the same could be said about every other brand.
@@aTrippyFarmer why not just get a used pickup truck to roam around the fields?

Actually its known for the opposite color mfg to throw in money on a trade deal to gain market share. It's why you see big guys switch back n forth alot.
Those kind of deals are above the authority of local dealerships. That is a corporate program, so I don’t think it is relevant to regularly-sized farms like ours. I know some big farms that flop back and forth, but I know others that are wholeheartedly loyal to Deere.
Multiple brands that are expensive and it is a plus for the customers. Better engineering demands quality and reliable that a customer demands, so if a bad piece is known to farmers, that brand in that area is trashed. Farmers are going to buy quality... period, not color !
I agree. There are a lot of 10-20 year old Deere tractors around the area that still performs tirelessly. Deere hit a grand slam with the 8000 series tractor that has solidified a lot of permenant business.

There is not a single thing on our tractors that we couldn't repair ourselves if we had the knowledge and willingness to do so. Most of the time, it is more economical to just let a qualified mechanic fix the issue. They are faster and often do a better job.

Trimble smokes greenstar or whatever they call it
Trimble is only better for earthworks, in my opinion.
Between the hundred series and twenty series Deere combines and the 8630 Deere fwd tractor I don't understand how John Deere dominates anything
Like I said, there were certainly some products that left sour tastes. Some people also had better luck than others…
Your farm must have a lot of money to run all green ,you have bought a lot of machines last couple of years and John Deere have the highest list prices of any equipment.Cannot complain about high input costs.
We have built this lineup of equipment over the last century. It wasn’t all just bought with one check last year. I disagree about input prices. If anything, it would be bad business management to just accept the blatant price gouging from nearly all sides of agriculture. We don’t get the kind of day that all of these product manufacturers do.

Andy,,,,, I’ve never heard you be “politically correct before”. You hit the nail on the head with your 4 stated reasons why we run Deere. And you also nailed the 5th for us cotton growers, Deere is the only one still building cotton harvest equipment. And besides that, no one else could compete with them and hence the last man standing. No one will ever beat Deere. Ever. And that’s not up for debate.
That 5th point was just a lucky guess example. If you talk enough, you’re bound to say something right eventually! 🤣
@@aTrippyFarmer Andy the two most expensive pieces of farm equipment made by Deere are the CP 770 and the CS 770.
