Beautiful country with fantastic & unique citizens great neighbor and most needed ally. Don't agree with the plan to bury nuclear waste near Lake Huron though.
Americans still get angry over 1812. History lesson: yes, it was "Canadians" who burnt the white house. The confusion comes from the fact that Canada was still the "Canadian Colonies", which were claimed by Britain back then. So, Canadian soldiers (those born and raised in the Canadian colonies aka "Canadians") were lumped in with British soldiers (those from England). But saying it wasn't "Canadians" is like saying there were no "Americans" in the Revolutionary War because the US wasn't the US then. Take from that what you will.
None of the forces under General Ross's command in the attack on Washington contained "Canadians." He had four infantry battalions composed of veterans of Wellington's army, a battalion of Royal Marines, and about 250 Colonial Marines from the Caribbean and Gulf Coast. He also had some Sappers (engineers), miners, and 100 naval gunners. There were a number of Canadian raised units in the British army of the day, but none took part in the attack on Washington.
John Thom Could you cite your sources? I would like to read up on it myself. In school, Canadians are taught that there were some Canadians fighting under General Ross in the Battle of Bladensburg. It would be interesting to know the truth.
chapachuu Oh man...lol... where do I begin? I'm a tour guide in NS and over the last 10+ years I've collected information from all over the place. One of the main ones is the Cambridge Military Library here in Halifax, where Ross is buried. War diaries, biographies, studying the British order of Battle, eye witness testimony..j/k, and books books and more books. Both NS and NB raised regiments in the War of 1812, the NS Fencibles and the NB Regt. of Fencible Infantry, but both were deployed to Kingston and the Niagara region. On the Atlantic coast there were simply more than enough British regiments there, at Halifax, that they had no real need of Canadians in that theatre of operations. But I will concede that yes, there's a good chance that few individuals were able to slip into the rank and file, but officially, no. And by all means, if you can point to me in a different direction I'll certainly dig into it. History is like a rug, you need to lift it up to see the real dirt.
Other things that Canadians are known for that some of you may have not known: - Sense of humor - Largest gathering of snakes in the world is in Manitoba (the big chunk of land between Saskatchewan and Ontario) - America's hat (or toque) - Smugglers of alcohol into the US during prohibition - Growers of Black eyed peas - Inventors of the paint roller
It is not hard to question random people on the street and find a small number who are ignorant about a given subject. Throw out the good answers, keep only the bad ones and voila ! you have a clip to illustrate your point.
I have had a few Americans ask me "What time is it in Canada"? and many who honestly believe we live in a frozen wasteland riding horses and living in igloos. Most I have educated and are now friends. A few of them have visited and/or plan to in the near future now. Yes, it is totally possible they used selective clips to go along with the segment, but the material is still legitimate. If I had a story about how majority of Americans regret voting obama into office, I wouldn't use the clips where people say "I'm glad Obama is the president!" to further my point. That would just me stupid... like your comment. >.>
To be fair, Uncle Canada isn't shy to the booze either, he's just a friendly drunk, the kind that tells funny stories and then falls asleep on the couch.
thank you! you all are doing great up there...ps keep sending us all ur famous people we americans love them in the movies theirs alot of them!...peace
+Omar Mohammed hmmm.... I would agree in that most Canadians do not say "aboot", but eh? I don't know what Canadians you talk to but I am from the east coast, and have lived in 5 different provinces... Everywhere I have lived people say eh - although some folks from Ontario seem to pronounce it "hay".... I likely use "eh" at least 20 times a day.
Canada is all mountains, woods, lake and ice. There is nothing pretty much to do there in the winter but ice skate, play hockey, ski, snowboard and play in the snow. In the summer its good to go to the lakes to swim.
Yes, I agree. I am Canadian, live in Canada but work in the US. They are every bit as nice as we are. There are always A**holes everywhere, not exclusive to one country or another.
On April 2, 1513, Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León landed on what he called "La Florida"-the first documented European arrival on what would become the U.S. mainland.[21] Spanish settlements in the region were followed by ones in the present-day southwestern United States that drew thousands through Mexico. Quebec's early exploration was in 1523-1650s, Quebec city was founded in 1608.
Here in CanaDUH as you say, we in fact do have culture. B.C. celebrates Cannabis day on Canada day, we're a multilingual country, our local delicacy is poutine, in Newfoundland we have a rich culture complete with traditions, our own dialect, music, a history older than the US, and some of the nicest as well as hardest working people in the second largest country on earth, Canada. It was also a Newfie that held the furthest recorded sniper kill until a year or so ago, Cpl. Rob Furlong.
That is true we trade alot and it keeps our economies going...my sister lives in windsor after her contract was up she applied for citizenship because she likes it so much....better opportunity in her field of work.
Canada has wildlife, hundreds of km of trees and lakes without big buildings, clean lakes, free health care, so many gold, sliver and diamond mines. USA had so much things, huge stores, pretty scenery, amazing inventors. WE ALL HAVE OUR PROS AND CONS. When I was a little girl I never cheered for american sports teams, never wanted to go there because the people are so rude. We are neighbors we should get along, not fight!!
so your saying that revenue canada defines who you are? and as for them they don't effect me one bit however i did get a check in the mail from them OTB?
Highway 1, Highway 12, Ring Road, Victoria Avenue, Railroad Avenue, those are all random roads in just my area, you'll find these and many more if you try looking them up (they're in Saskatchewan) and what do you mean by trying to get away with it?
Yes we Canucks are a pretty proud bunch. We also enjoy having the U.S. as neighbours. Sometimes you have us scratching our heads and saying WTF. We help each other every single day.We both open our doors to each other. We both believe in the same rights and freedoms, the same type of judicial system and democratic process. No other countries in the world can say they get along with thier neighbours as we do.I'm proud to have them as our neighbours and friends.
I think what makes Canadians well respected around the world is that we can laugh at the Canadian stereotypes/jokes, and make fun of ourselves- unlike several other countries. Plus, we're genuine and friendly. :D
I'm blessed to be Canadian & living in the best country on Earth. I feel so safe, I can't even imagine living in the states. I like going to the movies & SURVIVING
I honestly don't see anyone here obsessing over it..in fact, I think Canadians are mostly confident that other people around the world see Canada as a great place. We're proud to say we're from Canada when we travel, even if people think we all live in igloos and travel in snow shoes.
I've done my research. Guess where I found this. -In Canada, Crown corporations, within either the federal or provincial spheres, are technically owned and operated by the monarch, as the institution's sole shareholder; this follows the legal premise that the Crown, as an institution, owns all the property of state. - Do you understand what this means? I can deal with it, no problem.
Youre right, im sorry. but i i realize that the Yukon and the Northwest territories are actually territories, but I consider them provinces all the same. when i said only province i would live in, i meant it as in part of Canada.
Alexander Graham Bell was born in Scotland, however he invented the telephone while living in Brantford, Ontario; using Canadian materials and funds. So basically, without Canada, there would not be a telephone.
Do some research. In Canada, Crown corporations, within either the federal or provincial spheres, are technically owned and operated by the monarch, as the institution's sole shareholder; this follows the legal premise that the Crown, as an institution, owns all the property of state.
Have you ever been to Canada? Of course not everyone is good or polite but I know a lot of Americans that are surprised when they come up here and people hold the door open for them, say please and thankyou, let them go ahead of them in line if they only have one item to purchase. For the most part Canadians are surprised to find out this isn't normal behaviour! Of course we are proud when we discover that we are considered some of the nicest people. That's pretty awesome!
The sad thing is, it's true. I worked at a call-in centre a few years back, answering customer question and complaints. There was this one woman who seemed surprised to learn that I was located in Canada. She actually - no lie - asked me if we were still living in igloos. I am 100% serious, here. Not making it up for YT. She really believed that I would go home to my nice, cozy igloo . . . though how exactly I managed an internet connection is really beyond me. :)
I've seen some documentaries that were made by Americans, about Canada. It was interesting, because in one, one man noted that the News here is different. There, in the US, the news is all about death and prices. And here, since we don't have as much crime, it's about smaller (as well as important) things, like a school getting new computers or something. Another thing he noticed, not many people locked their doors because they TRUSTED everyone. I find that amazing. Canada is just the best!
It can be cold in winter, so what? This is you primary knowledge of Canada? So then there is no point in your involvement here or any of your opinions on the matter.
i never said Canada was 4th in land mass.. i clearly said #3 , i even listed it that way and then again by borders.. BUT i forgot about CHINA .. @OceanBlue if you think so
How come USA lost the Vietnam War and the 9/11 war
Whenever I bump into inanimate objects I say sorry.
Guess I can't get any more Canadian than that.
RamenCantHaveDis i do to. sorry about that
RamenCantHaveDis
I apoligize to the air molecules before I breathe, beat that!
Oops, that was rude - I apoligize profusely! 😂🍁❤

John Thom All right. I'll have clarify with my history professor. Perhaps it's time for him to retire...haha
chapachuu
The one constant thing about history is that multiple sources will give you multiple versions of the truth.
The question asking if Canada has a royal family was an unfair question. Bit of a trick question.
not really
Other things that Canadians are known for that some of you may have not known:
- Sense of humor
- Largest gathering of snakes in the world is in Manitoba (the big chunk of land between Saskatchewan and Ontario)
- America's hat (or toque)
- Smugglers of alcohol into the US during prohibition
- Growers of Black eyed peas
- Inventors of the paint roller
We should really be known for comedy. We have just for laughs in Montréal. Many American comedians go there
don't forget we also invented basketball, the snowmobile, the zamboni and Ryan Gosling
+wer8888 I pay monthly into my medical care. what kind of government assistance are you on?

Hi from Melbourne
I understand that -I've lost friends too and it really sucks! So I'm honestly very sorry that you had to go through that.

In June 1984, American Motors Corporation (AMC) established an agreement with the governments of Ontario and Canada to build a new assembly plant.
The whole thing about "Canadians being nicer and cooler".. that's a load of croc.
Cooler...only the temperature. Nicer....I found them nice.
Yes, I agree. I am Canadian, live in Canada but work in the US. They are every bit as nice as we are. There are always A**holes everywhere, not exclusive to one country or another.
jsteed5 Ten times the population, ten times more assholes.
Did someone say... C R O C?

That was a Molson beer commercial from several years ago.
Ok, sense of humor. Carry on. :)
I would really like to visit Canada some day. Seems like a beautiful place

We went grocery shopping in USA and asked if they had any pepperettes and the people had no idea what they were :O
This is so true

It doesn't matter how many people or countries notice us. All that matters is whether or not it's the right people, noticing us for the right reasons.
thanks
Wow. this guy must be freaking proud to be canadian
That is true we trade alot and it keeps our economies going...my sister lives in windsor after her contract was up she applied for citizenship because she likes it so much....better opportunity in her field of work.
What a glorious day for Canada, and therefore of course, the world

Didn't even have to look it up! I love the Dutch! Canada and the Netherlands will always be friends. :)

We primarily see Canada as wicked cold in (yes) winter.

Fair enough. I thought the same as you as well, until I double checked it. I always thought we had more 'land' mass too.
Being from Groningen, I thank Canada and it's people.

I proud to Be Canadian As I'm Canadian ... LOVE My Land Canada

True, but made his first phone call in Brantford, Ontario, Canada and is laid to rest on the East Coast of Canada.
Live in the past, get left behind. Your CPP comment gave me a good laugh. Thanks for that. Just keeping it real.
@Kostagh That's actually not true, the name 'Canada' came from the Huron word 'kanata' meaning 'cabin' or 'group of huts', first used by the explorer Jacques Cartier.
Toque and touque are alternate spellings to tuque, just pointing that out.
I've often wondered how others see us.
