Franco TPOK - Kinshasa Mboka Ya Makambo

- From Graeme Ewens' "Congo Colossus": "When Franco took the stage he appeared triumphantly alone in the spotlight at the top of some steps wearing a white lace boubou and weighing, as he later told the TV presenter, about 120 kilos. He sang, unaccompanied, a slow talking bolero-blues type song, "Kinshasa Mboka Ya MKambo" (Kinshasa, Town of Problems) in which he spoke directly to the receptive studio audience about his love for and fidelity to Kinshasa, the town of many problems, a town he would always love even though he was accused of deserting it for Europe, where people suspected he made his wealth by running drugs. It was the spectacular entry of a supremely confident star returning to his own people. He had the audience in his grasp as he descended the staircase, speaking out his feelings in a slow and soulful way before calling for the blue Gibson guitar and making that do the talking. Once esconced in the wrap-around sound of the complete TP OK Jazz, Franco played a stunner, lest the people of Kinshasa had forgotten whose town it was."

I am 19 and I love Fally, Koffi and werra. But lets be serious our musicians now have nothing on the musicians of our fathers generation. This guy is a genuis. Look at him pure talent, so simple, just him, the audience and his music.
Tu continues toujours à nous édifier à travers ta musique cher papa Franco 🇨🇩🙏🙏🙏!
Franco was truly a once in a lifetime musical phenomenon!
4:37 "Mwana yela ngai guitar na solola" = "Son, bring me the guitar so I can talk (through it)." Franco could express his emotions through his singing, but he could also make his guitar talk for him!
Nick Coza translation please
I'm Algerian and I always loved the music from the Congo.
PS: Mario etats unis :0) dedicace a Tshiamala et toute la communitee Congolaise d'Atlanta
Mwana yela ngai guitar nasolola!
More fearless than most know. Flawed like any human being but in the area of life and music: Dangerous. Nobody more fearless and nobody more productive. Mangwana was right. A man like Franco comes along maybe once every hundred years. There will never be an artist who approaches his complexity especially in an African country where it is more difficult if impossible to make a living.
Vraiment mon pays RDC 🇨🇩 🔥 surtout Kinshasa mboka mabe
No words can describe this song...Just a master piece....the guitar part...waaaah
This man was gifted g
Le grand maître!
Franco became one of the richest musicians because of his talent not because of the rumors. The issue here is he was a social commentator and as such if u listen to the song he is grateful of his people but he knows when things get out of hand they need to be addressed. U can put a man like this in any country and he will rise to the top. Why?. Look at the guitar solo no one not even Santana, BB or Clapton can do that.
BB and Santana are another level, but it's correct to say Franco metches them all.
C'est tellement emouvant...
12 ans après, c’est toujours aussi émouvant
Kinshasa eza mboka etoda lokuta, songi Songi Ya pamba....Kasi elombe na biso atikali nde Grand Maitre, ata basala nini!! Aaah!!!!

Watching this great man and his incredible music leaves me with an inconsolable sense of loss... And deep deep sadness. Some people should never die.

The Grandmaster of Rhumba.RIP FRANCO.
I think there's a lot we did not know about this guy. How I wish he lived in a digital era where it would be possible to record all his life.
He was a prolific writer
Franco was undisputed king of rhumba.

In this, the franco was determined to counter attack his gossipers who lied about him selling drugs in Europe. The determination was serious on his face, he vowed to fight them until he clears his name. This mans was a tough nut to crack, only disease could have crippled him, and, it did! God created his giant called Franco Makiadi which means sorrow....
Love this type of Zairean Music cuz its slow and soothing ... Maybe its cuz my parents played these songs 24/7 when we were kids ...
C'était pourtant vrai .... sacré Grand Maître 😂😂😂😂
Trop fort
this reminds me of "Trouble Sleep" by Fela...both songs are slow compared to their usual styles, but haunting melodies oozing with so much soul

I salute you Franco, you will never die nor expire!
From Zim
The problem is rumours and gossips are social phenomenons that are unpleasant when untrue , the consequencies could be quite serious at time ... and Franco was telling his own story trying to educate the masses once one .
pro818 thanks a lot! Do u have the lingala lyrics?
such a powerful voice. Franco was unmatched in his vocal complexities.

franco the best off congo
True musician!
Audio gold
the great thats all i can say!!!!
franco we love u 4ever(L)
This is art! Enough said!
A great poet.

...Mwana ela ngai guitar nasolola ... (or whatever he says) ... I believe it means child give me the guitar, words are not enough to pass my message, I need to do it with the guitar too ... Love Franco, RIP ...

Wauuuuuu....❤❤❤
the poetry in it must be great

Just one thing - that is his Fender Jaguar, not a Gibson, he used a Jaguar from the mid 60's up til early - mid eighties
Kinshasa...
Just one thing - that is his Fender Jaguar, not a Gibson, his guitar from late 60's up til mid eighties
Yes I have seen the picture, he really showing signs he's sick.
You're welcome.
can someone upload pierre moutuari
In this tune franco played a fender jaguar, it was not the gibson mvx that he used to play later.

Franco simply says he doesnt sell drugs as is rumoured.
5:43 how to create pure magic with just two notes
The message? A response to rumours regarding Franco's alleged desertion to Europe. Rumors and gossip was a theme that ran through several Franco compositions: "Les Rumeurs," "Radio Troittoir," "Tu Vois? (Mamou)." This performance was in 1982. He died in October 1989 at which time he was very thin. The cover photo on the Mangwana-Franco lp "For Ever" shows the gravely ill, almost unrecognizeable Franco.
hi
@rahndi U can say dat again. :-)
No, Franco lost a huge amount of weight from La SIDA before he died. This is not that close to the end.
I hope you are his doctor and can share his medical records with us

Barbara6shyy why dont you take this nonsense some other place, unless you wanna comment about the music or the video keep your hot girls to yourself
This is genius. Listen to that..... It speaks to the soul.
