    “Do I like this deck enough to spend less time with my thoth?” Is SUCH a good question. I haven’t gotten into thoth, but I get what you’re saying. The more I get into tarot and the more I learn, the more I’m convinced that my favorite is the RWS, plain and simple... because it’s so full of symbolism. And I don’t mean the esoteric symbolism, I mean the deep life concepts you find synthesized in each card through simple graphic symbols. I agree with you that so many modern decks have a very surface level interpretation of the cards. Also, so many modern decks shy away from the more “negative” cards and that DOES NOT work for me. I hate when the death card is renamed to something like “rebirth” or “transformation”. I know those are two valid interpretations, but why are you limiting my interpretation of the card to ONE SINGLE meaning? Let me make my own interpretation of the cards!!! Honestly, a huge part of my spiritual practice is coming to terms with the scary stuff in life. Please, let me face it. I don’t get why people are so scared of the word DEATH? My dad would call it the “Disneyfying of the world” hahaha where companies feel the need to beautify life and shield us from the “bad stuff”.

    • @SylvainsDeadlySins
      @SylvainsDeadlySins  Před 2 lety +1

      Oh yes! I said Thoth because it's a personal favorite, but it could very well be RWS. Do I want to sacrifice time I can have with my favorite deck to learn this new one? There are no wrong answers, but we should be aware that it's what's happening...
      "Disneyfied world" is hilarious to me, I love it! Especially since we now have a Disney Tarot on the market! 😂

    • @marianamasbooks
      @marianamasbooks Před 2 lety +1

      @@SylvainsDeadlySins hahaha yes!!! And don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with Disney! Much to my dad's disappointment I love Disney lol. (I mean, I'm a huge romance reader, so I'm clearly a fan of happily ever afters), but it's like we were saying with guilty pleasures: you need to have both the fluff and the substance. It's the same here, you can't have only fluffy decks. (I mean, you could, but ideally you'd also have decks that have more substance to them)... Companies like Hayhouse take advantage of our human need for simple, untroubled joy... which is, indeed, despicable :(

    • @CathySander
      @CathySander Před rokem +1

      For me, I would turn to traditional astrology (not the psychological variety, which is a largely a product of the 20th century) to handle the 'negative' stuff better. In that system, there are planets that are benefics and malefics, which then describe the quality of time of an event. And as we all know, not all events in life are subjectively experienced as positive. Tarot tends to lean towards the more personal/subjective side of things, given how it is typically used in a reading session. Astrology allows some emotional distance, from how I see it. In such a system, sugar-coating is frankly unnecessary and we are in a position to talk frankly about difficult life circumstances (provided, as usual, that we're not scaremongering).

  • @AM-ji5pi
    @AM-ji5pi Před 2 lety +14

    Totally agree when you talk about the "respect" creators always seem to deserve (even while producing b*llsh*t) and how disrespectful it can be for us as customers, when we don't even feel "allowed" anymore to say we're sometimes disappointed, underwhelmed, or even angry... when the deck is clearly not worth the money. This is pure brainwashing and I feel so relieved to hear you talk about this !
    Your videos are all very insightful but what I appreciate most, I think, is that you always show us how to take our power back, in a tarot world full of aggressive marketing, "follow the crowd" attitudes, or dumb self-righteousness. Thank you, Sylvain ! I don't agree with everything you said (it might be kind of a cliché, but Deviant Moon is a staple "shadow work deck" in my opinion, especially for people who are not used to do that type of work on themselves) but I get so many "ahah moments" in one single video, it's amazing ! I just found your video and I wish I would have found it sooner lol. I am relatively new to Tarot (just about a year in). I agree with everything you said and they are thoughts I had myself. Unfortunately with the explosion of Tarot on places like Tik Tok it made it super marketable and so many jumped on the deck train (selling decks). This happened with a topic that I have years of experience in, Astrology. On the one hand when Astrology went mainstream I liked it because I could finally find cute things at stores and talk about it more openly, but now its so over saturated and so much misinformation has been spread about it that now most people find it annoying and it now has the opposite effect which makes me sad. When I got to the part about Chris Anne I got so sad lol, the Light Seer Tarot is my fav deck, well one of them. I do agree with you though. I came across a BIG red flag with Chris Anne, I was on kick starter looking at Tarot decks and guess who was on there for a new deck she is about to start a campaign on.....yep, Chris Anne.....its called the shadow worker deck and it says coming soon to kick starter. I thought that was odd as I know she is published and backed by a large company so why would she need to take thousands of dollars from people on kick starter to fund her new deck? I found it odd.....
    I recently, like 2 days ago got her Muse tarot deck and I didnt like it much, ironically I preferred the book over the light seers book, but the cards seemed really random. None of her other decks called to me, OMG especially the deck you showed in this video, I saw it on Amazon and was like....thats literally just 3 words types on a card for like $30, heck no. I have started buying quite a few decks, but if Im honest I do it mainly for the art....is that weird? I actually prefer to read with the RWS as I think the symbology is perfect. I buy indie decks simple for the artwork. Does anyone else do that? Maybe Im just weird lol. Anyway, I love this type of video and we need more people like you that talk in this no b*llsh*t way. When I let everything go, including tarot decks and books and spiritual teachings, years ago, and just went within, that’s when healing and enlightenment at deep levels occurred. It is all within us. I came to know mySelf. Now I can play with cards, collect cards, but it’s all for fun and I have that as my only expectation. If more comes from working with a deck, great! If not, no big deal! I know where true healing and revelation lies. But while I still live on Earth, gotta entertain myself, lol!

    So many wise words, I hope many many people watch this video, and the one before that. Congrats to successfully culling your collection!
    Edited to add thoughts:
    I realised that I've put decks on my "maybe wishlist" when I really needed sth else. For example we had to move where the work is, so we had no choice but to move from a village to a big city. I feel disconnected with "real and wild nature", and I found putting the Herbcrafter's and several plant oracle decks onto my "maybe wishlist". But 1. I do not read oracle decks , because I need and want a system like in the tarot. 2. what I really should do is buying some pots and plants, and also to go outside more, cycle out of the city even if that takes time, and seek woods and lakes etc.
    Thanks to you, I got that insight today and realised I do not need any of the plant decks, not even the Herbcrafter's tarot. Instead I'll visit the garden center tomorrow and see what I can bring to my balcony.
    (I have a "maybe wishlist" before decks come onto my real wishlist, to prevent impulse buys after one very regretted impulse buy during a time when I really had no money to spare, and until now I found it very helpful in keeping that buying barrier in place)

    Sylvain, this is wonderful. Let’s have more of this in the tarot community. Looking from the outside it looks like you are going through a purge by fire which is great and so much good comes from it. However, there are few things I would like to point out. I disagree with the statement the all decks are good for shadow work. You sure can use any deck for shadow work but it doesn’t mean that all decks will serve you equally well. The advantage of using specific decks for shadow work is that you accept beforehand to be confronted with certain things. So, using a Disney deck or an Angel deck is not the same thing as using the hush Tarot or the Deviant Moon. There is such as thing as toxic positivity and fooling oneself.
    On the other hand, it’s true that in the end we really only ever need one deck, much like with most anything in life. I’m all for conscious purchasing and being mindful and there is no shame in accepting that we fall into traps sometimes (either the ones we make for ourselves or the ones ready available in the outside world) and buy or act on impulse. However, sometimes you just need to grab for something else other that your go to deck. Completely agree with you on clone decks. I also don’t see the point. Provided you decluster and are mindful of your purchases, I think there is a lot to be gained from variety.
    Lastly, regarding your comments on Kipper, I understand your point of view and completely agree with the fact that whenever you will feel like using it it will be readily available. These are also very cheap decks. However, my personal experience with cartomancy is that it upended the game for me immensely. I came back to tarot with a full new perspective and enhanced comprehension and set of techniques just by being exposed to the way cartomancy works. So, being sidetracked by Lenormand, Kipper or Sibila has been, to my experience, a wonderful insightful thing and I consider it to be an essential part of my learning process of Tarot.
    I love your videos. Please keep them up.

    I bought that Goddess oracle deck from Collette. I was wowed by the imagery. I was still fairly new to tarot/oracle in general at the time too. I do remember when I went through the deck that Kali did strike me as a little odd, but I didn't know how to articulate what I was feeling wrong with it. Her little story in the guidebook was just plain stupid and made up rubbish (about the vision of Kali coming and saying that her destroyer look is how "men" want her to look etc). It wasn't until I saw Angali's video about the deck and about her experience with Collette that I understood what was wrong. So now I try and be more mindful before I buy a deck. If it has some sort of cultural reference in it, I try and check to see if it's genuine or a something based on cliches/stereotypes (or if its just white people using "cool ethnic things"). I've also realised how commercialised everything has become and I find it so paradoxical.

    Hi Sylvain! I watched a few of your latest video back-to-back, so I am not sure where you said what...I will just comment here! :)
    Well-done on decluttering! I don't think I am brave enough to leave too many decks go - and I am not sure if I really want to if I'm honest! But I totally agree with you... collecting decks can be addicting. Personally I don't think that there is anything inheritantly good or bad with having one, a few or many decks. For me, the good or bad is in the reason behind it. Just because I only need one deck to read the Tarot, it doesn't mean that I should only have one deck. But it is important to know what do all the extra decks in my collection do for me! I don't even have to use all my decks, but if I don't, I need to know why they are there! At the moment I am at the point where I have many decks and I am not entirely sure what many of them offer to me! (I guess I got carried away by my fantasy-self, fomo etc). I have finally stopped buying decks...if I do get any I need to know why or it is not coming to my collection.
    I could not agree more about the "well-being", "healing" and " self-care" industry! Most decks nowadays are void of meaning! They feel like reproductions of other decks - similar concepts and keyword, different artstyle! We as customer need to draw the line someplace!
    As always beautiful and inspiring content! Keep it up! :)
    Much love to you! xx

I realised that I find it's easier to let people go than decks/books...and not sure I like what that says about me...I value finite relationships where a person is in my life for period of time/lesson and then we move on...so I can release. But with decks I have so many I havent worked with most so not ready to release until I've tried them (but I have sneaky suspicion I will never try them because acquiring decks has become a substitute for studying....a form of sneaky procrastination (and collection ego😫?).....I love what you've done...its exhilarating to clear so much. Ha, And I so agree with you that the criteria for a guidebook to be good is to be big! Like, the image taking a whole page is such a waste of space, like the big lewellyn ones, the whole page image is way bigger than the cards, when it could be space used for actual words!

    A person who does amazing readings with a deck can do amazing readings with every deck. I usually don't read the books who come with tarot decks, I have the method which I learned tarot from my teacher and the psychological meanings of the cards don't change. The reason for me to get new decks, is to tap into my intuition. If the deck has added value for my intuition it's a good deck for me. It's different with Oracle decks, for which the books are imperative, but sometimes the message of those cards is so blend that I don't feel it's speaking to me.

    I am so glad you called out the creators and the sell-out culture! I stopped buying decks as of recent because I can tell they are so shallow, superficial, and poorly made. The quality, the amount of deep and contemplative information, the actual “art” or just scripted words or photos on a card… not good enough for my money. Creators create for self and others who admire and appreciate their work. Please don’t sell me junk because I will not buy it.
    Also love that you point out the “big book” thing. Ethony decks have chunky books and not much to reflect on deeply… wasteful.
    And the Wild Unknown… if I can draw it I’m not spending money to buy it.

    "This above all, to thine own self be true....". What great common sense you present in this video. I agree, as a newbie, one wants to just learn about everything as quickly as possible. I have the Golden Art Nouveau, and that was sort of an impulse buy for me too. And I've suffered from the FOMO curse as well. You keep promoting the Thoth, and that is one I really want to really learn, and of all my decks, the only one I trust to give me the exact feedback I need. What you say about decks that barely scratch the surface is important to consider, as I am really turned off by those cutsey/artsy decks. Anyway, thank you for sharing your wisdom and insights. This was just what I've been looking for.

    Tell us how you really feel, Sylvain. I love it. 😁 We need more of this honesty here when it comes to deck.
    I agree with you about you say regarding indie deck and beginners. I say blame the Wild Unknown for setting the trend. The WU became popular exactly because a lot of people started with the WU when they found it in a hipster store, a place like Urban Outfitter, or art gallery. Kim Kranz was smart in that way in popularizing her deck. Those new to tarot liked that it was non-traditional and they just learned the meanings by rote because that’s all they got from the LWB and overpriced guidebook. They didn’t know any better until they tried to branch out and had to learn all over again with more traditional decks.
    Like you, I believe it’s not beginners that buy indie decks, and the guidebooks should reflect that and dispense with the card meanings. The art is subjective and hard to quantify. Creators should dedicate the space to explain the choice of symbolism in the cards. Us veterans already have an idea what the card means, and we’re smart enough to grasp any changes, whether we agree or not. I stopped looking at indie decks because of this, and debating getting rid of a few kickstarter decks I got suckered in to buy. I want to know why you put 6 people on the Lovers card, damn it!
    About Chris-Ann’ Sacred Creators, it came out as an indie deck several years before she designed the Light Seers and The Muse Tarot. I think she sold out her 3rd printing at the time she launched the Kickstarter for Light Seers. The thing about Chris-Ann, her indie guidebooks are way better and have more information than whatever came out with Hay House. The reduced format and abbreviated content is all about the cash. I agree, though, her latest deck is bad.

And the best thing I’ve done to slow that down is to find a CZcams video of that deck in action. I cackled a lil bit with your commentary about Spirit Keeper's Tarot because I said the same things about the deck and myself 😂.
    There's also a thing that makes people buy oracle as an obligation, a must per se, to compliment or match their tarot cards... Even some indie creators do this, which is fine, but you know, sometimes it feels like a cash grabbing thing (specially if they create continuations of the oracle in the same palette, tone or theme as the tarot one or their first oracle).
    Kind of glad I'm not into oracle that much but encountered people who had trouble liking oracle decks or their only oracle deck or even asking if an oracle deck is a must.
    Similarly happens also with creators that decide to make “extension cards” (I only have Terra Volatile in that aspect and heard they were doing a 2nd expansion so 🤷).

    Round of applause sir ... I totally agree . The hay house stuff you are so right its advertisement after advertisement throw in some buzz words ... it's a money machine. Same with indie decks ... total 💩 for beginners amongst other things... dont get me started on indie decks!!!!!! When I say stuff about indie decks it tends to pi$$ people off and they get all defensive over them... why arent people speaking up about these things .. I dont get it 🤷‍♀️
    I bought a crap deck you can add to the list ... the harmony tarot. It's absolutely useless. It's not a good deck for beginners...its not a good deck for seasoned readers!!! Oh I can't even begin.... go find a video unboxing of it! Lol waste of a good £12 but heh.
    Good decks lo scarabeo their decks are very clever in my opinion. They make you think. Favourites for the unsolved crimes readings I do ... tarot V I call it tarot violent cos it basically deals with the what happened in graphic detail... haunted house tarot and steampunk tarot ... both of these real good too and of course my trusty rws. And that's whats in my unsolved crimes/murder/missing persons tarot toolbox!!!
    Oh can I just say as well I think you said in an earlier video about decks that are there to do a job even if they dont look good .... that's my tarot V deck. Totally not into alot of the artwork...but my god it packs a punch and works. When I use this deck I'm not looking at the artwork for arts sake I'm looking at the details within the picture ... that's why it works I dont see something that puts me off the card, I see details like body language directions objects etc etc it's like a puzzle trying to fit all the pieces together and that's the beauty and fun of tarot and it's a shame many will never know how amazing tarot is because they're too busy fussing over stupid decks too much... they care more about the deck than tarot .... have I said that before.. I feel I have! If not to you somewhere I've said it. Anyways I've rambled too much... if you get negative comments dont worry... stick to your guns I'm sure theres more who agree with you and those who dont ... well whose ass do they need to lick today with a tarot review of some stupidly themed deck to get their freebies ...and that's mass market or indie I wont be biased!

I’m eagerly watching now to what decks you gave the flick to. I never knew that overseas they can’t stop Doreen’s decks. So many try and replicate her. Oh em gee, Colette Baron-Reid deck, UGH. I have no idea how anyone likes Doreen Virtue. I totally agree with you. Decks that are pumped out from deck assembly lines, UGH. Oh tarot decks with their own systems, UGH. Just stick to known systems or call it an oracle. I love Witches' Wisdom but, I use it as an oracle. Lewellyn boxes, I have a stack of those big boxes. What are we supposed to do with them? My first decks were RWS Centennial and Mary-El (which I had to put away til I learned RWS). You know the second you push that buy button on an impulse buy it's not going to work out. Never does. Patrick Valenza decks do not appeal at all to me.

    Decks with promises…🤢, totally agree! I have four decks I would like to give away, and the common denominator is that they were all $15 or less. I guess that means impulse sale purchases are my issue. No more Book Outlet for me. 😬

      I completely understand that! Also, the "m'eh, I'll try it out, it's just a 15$" argument leads to lots of clutter...

    Chris Anne’s decks are grossly overrated. I have some really harsh opinions when it comes to certain individuals who decided to jump on the gravy train due to the resurge of popularity regarding tarot/divination (especially “shadow work” type decks.)
    I’m in no way invalidating anyone making their bread & butter but I am just a bit over people who do things with dollar signs in their eyes.
