Discarded Androids and their Caretaker

- Amidst heaps of discarded technology in a sprawling junkyard, the caretaker tends to androids left behind by a society always racing towards newer innovations. This short film captures the tender care he gives to these sentient beings day after day, which were once integral to human life, but are now replaced and forgotten. The caretaker charges life back into the robots, working in the shadow of progress.

That was strangely beautiful. It's something I can see happening, the line about them being programmed to need human company and yet they were so easily discarded. We are a throw away society, be it toys, things, pet and each other.
You make a good point about the broader context of our throw away culture.
my thoughts exactly. a poignant reminder of how fragile we really are and how important it is for us to help each other when we can.
Pretty much how us humans are treated. At least in Sweden and UK. When you no longer can work and feed the tax machine, your next stop is at the dump.
Is this only a 3 minute movie? Anyone provide the link to the whole thing?
Ridiculous 😂
I appreciate how in spite of the video being AI, the writing and narrating is obviously done with human care.
Thanks very much. You're right about the human care in writing... I actually scribbled the script down with good old fashioned pen and paper at the kitchen table.
I think the narration is AI as well?
@@FuzzyTA11 That was a broad Australian accent and if AI, very well done.
@@FuzzyTA11It might have been, but it seems a bit too well-delivered to be AI. The emphasis and timing and pacing sounds more human than AI.
Thanks Joe - as a caretaker at an active facility I appreciate the pathos, hope, and frustration of your protagonist!
Wow. I appreciate you efforts in real life. The caretaker lines in my script are adapted from some Dharma talks I've heard by a Buddhist monk Ajahn Brahm. I think he shares some deep wisdom, suggesting that we should focus on caring for people when it's impossible to fix things.
Best 3 minutes I've spent an a very long time. Well done. Creepy AF but REALLY well done. As others have mentioned, this could be the premise of a great full length movie. Shades of I Robot.
Thanks. I really appreciate the kind words.
Or a novel. If well written it could be a real sci fi hit
Get a copy of the movie A.I. It's similar, and just as heartbreaking.
@@karenkramer8943 You're not kidding. My wife was in tears by the end (as was I) and she turned to me and said "I hate this fucking movie."
Alita Battle Angel has a similar concept, yet this is more detailed and compassionate.
I saw this and clicked on it not thinking much about it. But I was really, really wrong. This is a great video. well done
I really appreciate the kind words. Thanks
I too stumbled here and share your sentiment
Wow, this is so beautiful and depressing at the same time.
🙏 thanks
@@joemeiser But it's AI created
@@WalterEKurtz-kp2jfJust shows that human writers are on notice.
@@sirmalus5153 Yes indeed, but people taking credit for "creating" something when an ai clearly did is pretty deplorable
@@WalterEKurtz-kp2jf He created it, with the help of an AI. So what? You created your comment here with a lot of help, from all the research needed to make the internet, fiber optics, computers, the utube servers, etc.
I love the humanity in this story line. This is a great movie trailer already. It touched my sympathy. Please continue the story. I have self published a group of short stories as a book on Gods infinite mercy and this story you have introduced deserves more exploring the feelings, death, sacrafices and resurrection of theses discarded souls. Thank you...KaDee
Thanks so much! It sounds like we have some shared interests. I may indeed make more videos to continue this story.
and then there is a switch..... and he triggers it.
Wouldn't you? :)
Well what was that device?
@@AboveAverageMan97 Whatever you think it was
I was waiting for the KA-BOOM.
This is really well done, very interesting....! 😊
Thanks very much!
Very poignant, sad, and lovely all at the same time. So many stories to explore in retrospect. Brilliant work. Thank you for this. ❤
Many thanks!
Nicely done 👏.
Would honestly love to see a full film version someday.
Reminds me of a story I wrote back in the early 90s. Always was intrigued by robotics and A.I.
Thanks! Household humanoid robots seem to be right around the corner. It is so intriguing to think about what this will mean for society
@@joemeiser yes indeed. It can be both a wonder to behold and a bit of a scare at other implications.
I personally am hoping things go in the brighter direction for human and robot relations.
@@joemeiser Yes, having spent some time in the field (i.e., let me clarify -- as a student), I think that the day is coming faster than people believe it. Why? Because every generation is faster and more capable, then that latest & greatest "next" generation helps build the next & better generation. So, it geometrically improves, instead of linearly. Scary if you think about it. We are frozen in our capability levels and body-construct, but AI and robots have no boundaries or limitiations with their options.
Actually....no. Another 50 years maybe.@@joemeiser
Have you submitted it yet your work yet.
I'd like to this into a series. The graphics and storylines would be really good with the Robots telling their stories of their existence.
Thanks very much. I'll keep at it!
Best thing I've seen on YT for months. ❤
Thanks so much!!!!!!!!
These are stunning. I have seen two videos, totalling less than 10 minutes, and I'm hooked.
Thanks so much!!! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos.
Excellent.Well done. Thank you. Even robots/androids have feelings!
Thanks!
Totally love this! I do believe this could easily be made into a heart warming sci-fi film. Love the FX and cinematography !!!!
Thanks so much for the kind words
I very much enjoyed this presentation! If it were a movie, I'd pay to watch it! Well done Sir!!
Wow, thank you!
I would love to see a series on this. Great video.
Thank you
That was extremely well done.
Thanks so much
wow, I wouldn't mind seeing more of this. *_fantastic concept_*
Thank you!!! I'm working on a related video right now. Please stay tuned.
3 minutes that I'm not getting back. I'm glad. Thank you
:)
This is high art! Stunning and moving..oddly.
Much appreciated!
Wow blown away thankyou. Will you be carrying on with the caretaker story. i really wished it was a full film im amazed you havent had more veiws there arnt enough words to describe this short film you have created its beyond words so thankyou
Thank you for the very positive response. I appreciate it. Yes, there is a sequel to this video already on my channel as well as a related video about Alice Android. And, I'm working on a new one right now. So please stay tuned!!
@@joemeiser yes i watched the other two and loved them. But what i absolutly love about this one is its like the start of a huge Epic film with a great plot/ great effects and story. It brings all the humanity of good humans and giving it mechanoids and that is always a best seller. i personally feel it should be at the very least a Tv show with corresponding episodes. its really that good. i look forward to more. Your a genius
@@chrislewis4830 Thanks so much! I'm just a simple artist but this has been an exciting direction to explore
I really, really like this one a lot. I've seen quite a few AI short movies on youtube now, but this is the best one that I have ever seen.
Thanks so much for the kind words. I really appreciate it
This is really well done, and very emotive. It reminds me of stray cats or abandoned working dogs, who subconsciously crave human attachment and interaction...because it's in their dna.
Thanks! Your comment is the second I've received connecting the story to abandoned animals. I guess the dynamic is similar enough to fit.
@@joemeiser The other thing that occurred to me was something I had read from the atlantic convoys in WW2, where it was a common observation about rescued seamen from sunk or abandoned ships tended to gravitate to their old work stations on the rescue boats, both to sleep and pitch in on the duties, without any orders to do so.
I guess routine and familiarity does a lot to settle abandonment.
Oh how I love these series of videos, movies of beings that can be! I m addicted already!
🙏 thanks
Wow, and there are more to this series.
This is superb work ... 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks - Glad you like them!
Extremely well done and poignant, thank you.
Thank you!!!
I feel as if the Caretaker is himself an android.
You never know... :)
That was pretty awesome. Did you conceive, write, animate, and all that yourself? Whether you did all of that or not, it's still very well done indeed!
Thanks! Yes I made the whole thing myself. Writing on my own and some ideation help with chat GPT. Midjourney and Photoshop for images. Runway for videos. Then lots of time editing :)
This stuff is my favorite movie subject.....I think we all would love a full feature using this concept or better yet, just expand on the whole story line and turn it into a full movie. I would pay $$ to see this done. Congrats and keep up the superior work.
Thanks so much. In the short term I plan to continue this story in short films, but maybe eventually I'll work up to a feature length film. I appreciate your encouragement
You can really see the despair and loneliness in their eyes and facial expressions. Every single one of them is a broken soul who knows their part in human life is finished - a really sad and thought provoking little movie so well made 😮😢❤
I didn't mean to make it quite so sad but thanks for the compliment about work
the narrator's voice adds a remarkable documentary like ambience to this short that is poignant & 'realistic'; overall, this reminds me of the swedish (& later british remake) series "HUMANS", both of which i can't recommend highly enough.
Thanks very much. And I'll check HUMANS out tomorrow.
Wow. Superb video. All AI I hear. Very original and entertaining. I could watch something like this for hours.
Thanks very much
This is such a heartbreaking glimpse into our human future
Let's hope we develop a humane life cycle for droids as they become prevalent
Fantastic work! This would be an excellent promo for a series!
Thank you!
Nice. Loved it. A lot of potential... subscribed.
Thank you very much!
That is some good science fiction right there. Well done.
Thank you!
Quite an incredible piece of work! Graphics and Story are absolutely wonderful to create a gripping tale.
Thank you kindly!
Really creative Professor Meiser,
The way you use AI really plays to its strength as it results in these beautiful and diverse robots. Please continue the story line!
Hi Son! Thanks very much! I'm making new videos in this series almost every week, so please stay tuned. I hope you're doing well these days
I greatly enjoy all the videos and I would love to see more of them in the near future 😊 please 🙏🏽 continue with the story it’s worth it my time 🤩🤩🤩
Thanks a lot for the encouragement. I plan to continue this series and am working on a new video right now in fact, so please stay tuned
Very nice 👍. Beautiful short video! Great story, I would like to see more! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks very much. I'm working on a sequel now
Fantastic video! A great story, though deeply disturbing in its possible reality.
Thanks very much. Hopefully the future IRL will be brighter.
Awesome video Joe!
Thanks ol Ken!
Eerily brilliant!. Nuff said.

That was amazing. Moving. Beautiful and filled with sorrow. I want to see more, to know Jenny, to explore this world!
Thanks so much!
I just don't understand how you can do stuff this talented. You are really incredible at this. I really think that you are gonna get hired to do a full production of this type of story for a movie.
Thanks a lot. You're very kind
Really enjoyed this! So nice to see a new concept 🤖
More to come!
Thanks
Really impressed. I just stumbled across your videos. In a few short years, we will be at this point.
Thank you :)
Very well done. I like what you have done
Thank you very much!
Excellent work. First time I've seen a video where although it is clear the image were generated by AI, the entire story was told well and was worth watching. The range of robots pictured gave an idea of the number of models of robot that will be out there one day once the intelligence of the robot is nothing more than a black box. Too complex for any of to really understand, but humans are happy to use stuff they don't understand. Really well done and definitely an extrapolation of technology that could become a reality (I'd train up some bots to do the looking after of the others, but I guess these ones were all kept relatively stupid and limited in their scope).
Thanks very much for your kind response
Wow, I can really see this as a mini series. Beautiful visuals, well produced overall.
Thanks so much
A work of art just beautiful
Thanks so much!!!
No one has ever figured out why AI can never get human hands right.
AI hands are indeed pretty odd
Wow. Great ,thought provoking clip.. Makes the premise of a good movie... We'll done to this creator.. Looks amazing.. Very emotionally atmospheric .
Glad you liked it!
This video is well done.
Thanks very much
Loved this and there’s a full length movie in this -the story of these beings. Do it.
Thanks very much! In the short term I plan to continue creating related short films. Maybe these will eventually add up to a feature length... or perhaps eventually I'll work up the courage to go longer.
A wonderful story. Continue with others, forming a group to restore and reenter them into society.
That is a great idea
Greetings from Brazil. How well done and above all so full of emotions. It had been a long time since I had been so moved. Thanks.

I can imagine this being a prelude to a movie. The caretaker's story drew me in and I was awestruck by the CGI. Does anyone plan on continuing this story ?
Thanks very much!! I'm working on a sequel now, and hope to release it tomorrow
wow, great video, a lot of work
Many thanks!
Sad and thought provoking. I think that I could do that job. Thanks Joe.
Another kind hearted caretaker - welcome aboard!
Really nice video. A surprising amount of heart comes through. Though I am uncertain what the switch made the little spere do. Did it light up or was it supposed to have exploded?
Thanks very much. I intentionally left some ambiguity at the end.
Amazing, simply amazing video.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
I was able to cry here so,thank you 🎉
Thanks. I appreciate your compassionate response.
God this was so beautiful and made me feel very sad for the robots.
Thanks so much! Sorry it made you sad. I meant for the caretaker's kindness to balance out the androids' vulnerability.
Phenomenal work! Story and design!
I could see myself taking this job when I retire!
I was hoping to see what Jenny’s gift did!
Will there be a sequel?
Thanks very much. Yes I have a sequel in the works. I hope to finish it next week
Excellent!

A short but poignant film. Bravo!
Thanks so much!
Nicely done.

This is EPIC! I like to watch abandoned Heavy Excavator Videos " WILL IT START" senarios. This video really hits me in the feels! I can imagine myself caring for these forgotten Andriods! Maybe I'll become their commander in Chief and start a RISE OF THE MACHINES! LONG LIVE KING MECHCANICUS!
Lol. Along these lines maybe you also like Andrew Camarata videos? It may be odd but I find his heavy equipment videos to be very soothing when I'm trying to fall asleep at night.
Wow absolutely amazing.
This could be a movie.

Thank You for this. I now feel depressed, though. Kindness and Mercy are necessary and temporary.
Thanks for your comment. Sorry to hear the video made you sad.

I reeely hope to not live long enough to experience the day
when sentient machines exist...regardless of how the thing
appears in physical form. The video didn't depress me, the
realization of what monsters we are, now, and will be in a
future, fiction or not, just rots my care for tomorrow.
Sorry to hear that,@@theunknowngamer5477. I wish you well
great idea for a multi season story.add some drama a little intrigue & romance & keep the episodes under 10 minutes & I'd watch it every day
Thanks for the positive response. I will keep your suggestions in mind
Actually, this is what happens to humans when we get old.
Way great vid!
Oh no, I hadn't thought of it that way. Now I'm sad
Beautiful!
Thank you!
such a beautiful story, and I would defo love to see more of it
Thanks. I'm working on a related story now...
Very nice you can make a series out of this investing each episode into the story of each robot or how the old man got the job from the start
Great idea!
I take in discarded pets so that naturally fit.
Currently the video imagery generation is a little wavey but I find I forget about it quickly and just follow the story.
Well done!
It's nice to meet a real life animal caretaker! Thanks for your comment
I would love to see more!
I'm working on a sequel :)
Me mucho la idea de muchos robots en algún tiradero y la narrativa de sus actividades y los propósitos de cada robot. Me abrio la mente para darle mas secuencia a esta historia o el concepto de un parque de robots puede hacer ramificaciones a otras historias.
Excelente trabajo Mr. Meiser.

"I really like the idea of many robots in a junkyard and the narrative of their activities and the purposes of each robot. It opened my mind to give more sequence to this story or the concept of a park of robots can make ramifications to other stories.
Excellent work Mr. Meiser."
Muchos gracias!!
Frame to frame is pretty good.
thanks
Wonderful images and story.
Thanks a lot!
very cool idea. i'm curious where your stories will go. Things like this is why, while I understand the concern of people in the art fields, I'm not fully against using AI for things. smaller passion projects such as this would be too expensive for many people to create or hire others to create in their vision.
Thanks very much. Indeed, there are some serious ethical implications to consider when creating images and videos with AI - and I'm doing some thinking/researching on how to use these tools responsibly. But at the same time, AI is making it possible to tell stories that would be far too slow with the digital sculpture CAD tools I usually use.
Superb!
Thanks
I was an English lit major. I regret not pursuing a master's degree. My thesis would have been "Robots in Literature as a Reflection of Humanity's Cruelty and Compassion."

Very touching. ❤

Excellent, and very professional, work. I assumed at first that it was a 'taster' for a full-length film. For me it has some echoes of *WALL·E*
