I've read Burnt Offerings but it's been a while and the only memory I have of it was that I thought it was ok but there are other haunted house books I enjoy more like Hill House and Hell House.
I already had The Last Haunt, A House with Good Bones, and Mary on my to read list and you've made me want to move them up.
Have not heard of those anthologies until now but both sound fun!
I read 12 books over September and October all but one were first time reads for me.
Looking Glass Sound by Catriona Ward
Mister Magic by Kiersten White
Devil House by John Darnielle
Dear Child by Romy Hausmann
Black House by King and Straub
Dead Eleven by Jimmy Juliano
The September House by Carissa Orlando
The Figure in the Shadows by John Bellairs
The Colony by FG Cottam (the only re-read but a favorite)
Clown in a Cornfield by Adam Cesare
Becoming the Boogeyman by Ricahrd Chizmar
The Sound at the End by Kirsty Logan (An Audible original)
All were varying degrees of enjoyable for me but the stand outs were definitely The September House (which had a lot more comedy to it than I was expecting going in making it a very easy read because I loved the narrator) and The Sound at the End (which I picked up because I wanted horror set in an isolated winter setting. It's mainly told through audio recordings and unfolds in a way that I personally enjoyed but some might find frustrating).
Always look forward to your reading wrap ups. Hope you had a happy Halloween and good start to your November
Looks like quite a good list. I’ve read a few of those but not most.
I read Holly by SK in Sep, it was 4☆. Good but it was an obnoxiously covid based book and he put a lot of bait for conspiracy theorists in it for some reason.
My list of story collections (went way overboard)
Salt slow by Julia Armfield
Dear Sweet Filthy World by Caitlin R Keirnin (lots of good body horror)
Once Upon a Time (she said) by Jane Yolen (not horror (mostly))
A Phoenix First Must Burn (mostly sff)
Moonflowers and Nightshade (good but mostly too tame)
More Deadly than the Male (classic horror by women)
all were good but some stories were misses like u said
Currently readind Below Us by Nathan Hystad, it's a top notch apocalyptic nonsters and meyhem book!
@@zachreads I still need to read Holly…but yeah, King’s been writing “messages” instead of novels from time to time and that always annoys me.
