  • IWB carry is very popular for a great many permit holders. I give some basics on the subject of IWB carry: holster types, advantages, disadvantages, etc.
As usual, I admit to not knowing everything, but I've carried in this manner for over 20 years, both as a reserve deputy and as a civilian. I've done lots of experimentation and have lived with the various holsters I show for thousands and thousands of hours, both walking around and sitting in cars.
Whether I convey the information well or not is one thing, but this is definitely one area where I have extensive experience.
By the way, since making this video last weekend, I did run across a Galco King Tuck IWB holster for the Glock 27 and bought it. I wish I'd had it for the video, but it IS almost exactly like the Crossbreed and would work just as well, it appears. I've tried it a couple of different evenings, and thus far, I cannot tell any difference.
Note ( 12-15-14) my newest favorite IWB holster is the StealthgearUSA Onyx holster. It's what I use mostly these days. It's not the cheapest, but I have to say it's the best of the breed, although all of them work just fine. If you don't mind forking over about $100.00 on a holster, you'll probably like it.

I would not consider re-holstering quickly that important, I guess. It's always nice, but bad things can happen by trying to see how quickly one can stick the gun back int he holster, especially under stress. If I'd had my gun out for any reason in public, I'm sure everybody has already been about as alarmed as they are going to be. :-)

As one might say, "re-holstering is NOT a timed movement; it is a PRECISION movement". Drawing and presenting for defense is both a timed (because you want to draw as fast as you can) and a precision (so that you don't pull the trigger until you intend to) movement.

I'm a big fan of IWB carry. It took me a while to warm up to it, but for me it was a matter of finding the right holster. I tried many-many holsters before settling on a couple of designs. Those designs are offered by Comp-Tac and Raven. However, like you mention, it's not for everyone. Body type, carry style, the clothing you prefer all plays a role in the decision process. Some folks like appendix carry, something I just can't warm up to. To each their own.

The second point has to do with where Mr. Hitchcock was firing. It may have been an optical illusion but there appeared to be some sort of structure slightly to the left and well behind the big gong he was targeting. I just watched a piece yesterday on the Sig 365. Big warnings about the backstop area of all targets. Even up, over and unseen. Appears to be violation of own warning. Help! Please advise range to structure, 4 mi. or greater, not 100 yd. plus, as appears. Thanks to Mr. H. from a grateful viewer!

The older I get the more inclined I am to pocket carry and in colder weather jacket pocket carry. Nothing is faster if your hand is already in your pocket especially if you carry a S&W 640 .357 hammerless j-frame. Point and shoot through the pocket if time is of the essence.

A LEO for over 23 years, I've carried a myriad of guns in IWB holsters. You're right on the money with these new style holsters with the wider clip points. With all the single clip holsters over the years, I found the rubbing of the clip holsters, from them moving and swiviling, very irritating. Now with the wide contact points of the double clips, there's no movement and I can wear it comfortably for long periods.

Another tip for if you choose this method of carry is to wear an over garment that will allow you to easily and consistently sweep it out of the way. I found that sometimes a shirt that was too thin or light might cling to much to the under shirt or just not allow me to separate it from the other one as they kind of get lapped and folded to each other. Also an old trick with a jacket or anything with a pocket down low on it is to weight it slightly. This helps to get it to swing out of the way more reliably than just the light weight of the fabric. Something like your car keys would do the trick. I have read of one officer that used to sew little lead weights into the bottom hem of his blazer jackets, for this purpose. Whatever works for you. :)

Another popular way to carry like this is to wear it in the front. This is pretty popular for those that want to hide their gun under a sweat shirt, or even a tee shirt, something pullover anyway. You pull up, aggressively and fully, the front of the shirt with your off hand and sweep up with your shooting hand drawing the gun out and up to the target in a fairly smooth single motion. I have carried both ways, this and the method you see here. I would say the advantages and disadvantages are essentially really more a matter of what you want and can wear. In the front was uncomfortable for me when sitting but I understand there are much better holsters for this now then 10-30 years ago. The trick to wearing in the front is to keep the length down to nothing longer than a Glock 19 and wearing it high enough, which requires the right holster. For me this was the fastest draw method, but I preferred wearing it just behind the hip, like you see Hickok doing here.

I've been carrying concealed IWB with a 1911 or a Glock 17, 19, 22 or 23 for 31 years now. I made my leather IWB holster for my 1911 and made one for my first Glock 17. I've been using a Kydex pancake type holster that came with OWB loops, but I converted it to IWB by changing the loops out. It cost me $60 including the IWB loops, conceals well under an untucked T-shirt or golf shirt & is comfortable enough for all day carry.

Hey, all you quick draws are great, but as for me, I'll be seeking cover if possible, then I can draw and aim. lol Seriously, though, I do think we place too much emphasis on quick draw and gun fighting vs. survival first. If a threat is so close that we can't get to cover, they are probably too close to draw and shoot unless you're Munden or Miculeck, etc. Maybe in that situation a close combat defense move may be better. Or at least an evasive move while drawing.

This is a good topic for discussion. People will act differently for their own reasons of course. The main thing that needs to be understood, is what are you are ready to do. Are you ready to just draw and fire, are you inclined to get the other person to reconsider the consequences of their action or will you be able to take cover while while drawing. Because I have never been in a active attacked situation, I am not in a position to say what is correct. All I can do everyday is to be conscious of my environment so that I can make the right decision. In the mean time I hope it never comes to that.

It’s all about the right holster for each individual. That and a good leather 2” gun belt and finding the right position on your body. I have a drawer of shame full of holsters. Settled on a Crossbreed and an inexpensive Kydex single clip with a slight cant to it. Combination of that, my Glock 43, and carrying at about 2:00 to 2:30 position IWB is carry perfection for me. But it’s such an individual choice and method to find what fits.

As with most things Hickok45 says, I totally agree. But for my money, for concealment purposes, YOU CANNOT BEAT A KYDEX IWB HOLSTER. I've tried both leather and Kydex, and I'll tell you why I prefer the thermoplastic. First, since the gun in tucked INSIDE the waistband, I'm looking for the THINNEST material I can find, and it's HALF as thick as any comparable leather holster. Second, I like the consistency of Kydex over leather. There is never any "break in" period, each one is exactly like the other. Also you can feel that audible "click" when the gun is fully seated, unlike with leather, and Kydex is totally impervious to moisture of any kind. I DO NOT like outside the waistband carry for concealment purposes, and I don't like pocket carry because of limited caliber choices, and I like to have all my pockets available for carrying other essential items, not guns. Just my take.

(I'm guessing that theres people gonna give me flack on KelTec's ... but if its good enough for -my- State Police to carry as their BUG, its good enough for me too !!
In the 8+ yrs of shooting these carry guns,... in over 7K+ rounds down range, I've only had 1 failure, and that was a FTF issue after a 500+ round day at the range !!
My point is this,... I bought a belt clip that mounts on the guns, for approx $9 ... I've trained with it and love it ... AND IT DOES NOT PRINT !!
Get and use what works for you !!

It's adjustable for angle and made of kydex so is water proof. I do have cross breeds and alien gear and like them too - they are super comfy. My carry is a Taurus G3C - which I have found to be reliable and accurate and is easy for me to shoot fast and well. I just wear an untucked shirt like you - usually a fishing shirt with a t-shirt tucked under but sometimes when it's super hot, it's just an untucked t-shirt and it works well.
