  • Kiwirail train 826 that starts at the Westland Dairy factory in Hokitika on the West coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It picks up some forestry on the way through and heads across the South Island interior to Christchurch where its cargo is loaded onto shipping and sent out to the world.

The Otira tunnel under the Southern Alps has a sustained gradient of 1:33. Milk powder manufactured in Hokitika packed in 20kg bags in shipping containers goes east and is destined for export from the port of Lyttleton. Some concentrated fresh liquid milk goes the other way to augment Westland milk but this particular train has no empty tankers going back for refill.

Great footage Marty, amazed to see double Dx's on the Hokitika branch! (Last time I saw a train there it was headed by a very lightweight Dbr)

Sadly watching this great video, reminds me of the possible sale of the westland cooperative to the Chinese, but then again I definitely am in ore of the Chinese railway's in the last few years. Maybe in the future our railways will be Chinese owned and operated.

Normally two DXC's from Arthurs Pass. Were they taking the other four to Christchurch for maintenance, or was it a "bad hair" day, and they were needed on the grades?

Probably just changing the engines as we could see 4 new banker engines were waiting at the Pass.

Yes thats right. Once a week they get fresh banker locos for Otira and that was the new ones waiting to go down the tunnel at Arthur Pass.

Sorry marty this Video raises more questions than it answers? why are 6 engines hanging slightly less than double that number? I expected in a video entitled westland dairy some comment about raw milk being transferred vai the rail! and the product then being exported at a huge profit?
