    What a lovely voice. Not sectarian and just patriotic, like most of our songs. The sash isn’t a sectarian song, what lines are sectarian? The song simply sings about an item of clothing the writer has a passion for. The fields of Ulster is a patriotic song singing about how much they love the country. God Save Ulster

    The Fields of Ulster
    Oh Father, Dear Father, why are all the fields so green?
    Oh no my son! oh no my son it's not the way it seems!
    In our dear land from end to end, Though it sometimes seldom shows,
    In every field of Ulster soil, the Orange Lily grows.
    The fields of Ulster, The fields of Ulster,
    The good lord ploughs and sows,
    The fields of Ulster, The fields of Ulster,
    Where the Orange Lily grows.
    That sacred flower in darkest hour's, the emblem of our faith,
    T'was borne across the centuries by Ulster soldiers brave,
    It's petals spreading far and wide until the whole world knows,
    In every field of Ulster soil the Orange Lily grows.
    The fields of Ulster, The fields of Ulster,
    The good lord ploughs and sows,
    The fields of Ulster, The fields of Ulster,
    Where the Orange Lily grows.
    Oh Father, Dear Father take heart and be of cheer,
    I'm off to join that gallant band the Ulster Volunteers,
    For as long as Derry's walls still stand and the River Boyne still flows,
    In every fied of Ulster soil the Orange Lily grows.
    The fields of Ulster, The fields of Ulster,
    The good lord ploughs and sows,
    The fields of Ulster, The fields of Ulster,
    Where the Orange Lily grows,
    Where the Orange Lily grows

    Too bad you're wrong there; the British monarchy is not just English, it's also Scottish. "A nation once again"? Ha! The ONLY time in history Ireland was ever one nation was after the English conquered it all, before that it was 5 separate kingdoms, one of them being Ulster. With cultural, historical & genetic ties with what is now western Scotland going back thousands of years the land has always been different & unique, which is why it must retain its freedom & independence from the Republic

    During the conference I met some people who said they were from Northern Ireland (didn't mention their ethnicity), while on the other hand some people also from NI said they were Irish. Protestant, Catholic, British, from Ni and Irish so we all got confused. No offense, but I am not British or Irish and would appreciate if someone could provide a reasonable explanation for us, people that are not familiar with Northern Ireland ethnic and religious questions. Cheers.

    • @63gc
      @63gc  Před 8 lety +5

      I'm sorry, I dont believe there is clear cut answer to be honest, & I mean that about every country & people.
      The simplistic answer- Many would say that Northern Ireland is split into two groups.
      Protestant Loyalist; King Billy, Lord Carson, Home Rule, UVF, Bands, Orange Order, Apprentice Boys Of Derry etc.
      Catholic Republican; Daniel O'Connell, United Irishmen, Easter Rising, IRA, Gaelic Football, Irish Music, Irish Dancing etc
      Protestant British who love Queen & Country.
      Catholic Republican who want Unification, & No Queen & Country.
      Now although the majority of these two communities believe in one of the above, many, myself included, like both. I love Irish History, my History, & believe that it doesn't belong to Republicans, nor does the Irish Language, Dance or other, & feel sorry that they have all been used Politically by both sides.
      Im & Loyalist, & non practising Protestant.
      I would say I am a British Northern Irish man who wants to remain part of the United Kingdom, & Im as proud of my Irishness as I am my Britishness. However there are many Catholics who also wish to remain within the United Kingdom, so it isn't simply a religious divide.
      Republicans, majority non practising Catholics, wish to see the unification of Northern & Southern Ireland, however some Protestants wish to see this also.
      England-English-British.
      Scotland-Scottish-British.
      Wales-Welsh-British.
      Northern Ireland-Northern Irish-British.
      Hope I haven't made it more confusing.
      Where do you come from?

    • @Tukelje
      @Tukelje Před 8 lety +2

      First of all, thank you indeed for an explanation; it has brighten our views (to some extent). We also did some reading, in order not to be uniformed, silly and disrespect anyone from Norther Ireland or Britain.
      I come from Bosnia and we have similar (to a certain point) issues; unfortunately our division terminated with bloody war (1992-1995) and the war concluded with hundreds of thousands of dead people, including the only European Genocide (Srebrenica) after WWII. There are Bosniaks (Muslims), Serbs (Eastern Orthodox) and Croats (Roman Catholics) living in Bosnia, and I simply consider my self Bosnian in the first place (something similar to being Welsh, Scottish or English, but preferring to be British in the first place - if I got it right). More people in my country love their "mother lands" (Serbia and Croatia) than the country they have been living in for centuries (Bosnia). I was always wandering if ROI met Ni during EURO 2016, whom would Northern Ireland Catholics support, Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland (i hope you get my point here)? I simply think that regardless to nationality and ethnic background, one should at least respect the country he/she lives in and cherish whatever country he likes. Just like the old saying goes:"You may or may not be angry with your own wife, at the end of the day you will have to share the bed with her only" ;).

    • @63gc
      @63gc  Před 8 lety +4

      You are 100% correct. We can look upon the history of our country, & you yours, with like or dislike, however history is history & should be kept in the past & learnt from. We have all suffered much heart break, & those who died must always be remembered. Your own Traditions & Religious Beliefs should be Accepted & Tolerated by those who share the country, & should democracy dictate Unification, be it in Northern & Southern Ireland, or other, then so be it. Countries have changed hands since the beginning of time, rightly or wrongly. Protestant, Catholic, Bosniaks, Serbs & Croats etc have many different issues between them, however the spilling of innocent (All Innocent) blood is wrong & should always be condemned as such. Some would argue that we do not have democracy, & no doubt governments do wrong, however as long as people vote them in, & it is a democratic vote, then that is the will of the people. People of today cannot be held responsible for bad decisions made by others many years ago.
      If Northern Ireland had played Southern Ireland in the Euro’s I would have supported Northern Ireland, not because I’m a Protestant & not even because I’m a big football fan, but simply because I love my country, I know we are looked upon, even laughed at by some, as underdogs, & many think us a bit of a joke. I believe many Catholics, or the ones that I know anyway, supported the team also, & given that the Northern Ireland team would have players from different religions within it, I don’t believe it to be an issue. However if Ireland had progressed beyond Northern Ireland, I would have had no problem at all cheering for them. Both groups of supporters proved themselves to be the best in the world during the tournament, & both should be very proud of that fact.
      I had a quick read about, & look at your country. It has no doubt seen & witnessed much pain in the past, however It looks like one of the most beautiful places in the world, & seems to have a bright future ahead. In fact, I think I will consider it for a brief holiday, with the wife, just to keep her happy:).
      Good Luck.

    Ulstermen made up half u.s. revolutionary army (most of the rest being English). Now movies teach them to identify as "irish-irish" instead of "scotch-irish" (ulster scots) so many are "brainwashed" and cut off from their real history. A senator there Jim Webb wrote a book about how their real history was hijacked after the irish-irish were "imported" by foreign powers (using a potato famine), then drafted into an army for the "civil war," fighting for "north," to create the new neo-feudalism

    There has always been considerable numbers of Catholics in NI (and thank you for acknowledging the existence of our wee country) but not all of them are Republicans believe it or not. Strangely enough there are less-bigoted Catholics out there who realise the prosperity that being part of the Union brings to the country. Fact remains that Northern Ireland is a nation free & independent from the Republic and even if someday it leaves the Union it still won't ever be annexed by the Republic

Perhaps you might want to familiarise yourself with the Norman Conquest in addition to ancient Irish history before making such ridiculous comments. There is no justification whatsoever for a United Ireland, Ulster should remain a free & independent land whether it remains part of the British Union or not.
