- I’ll be showing on to make the clock on your Echo Show act like a full-time clock yet still be responsive to voice commands and notifications.
I’ll be starting with the Echo Show 5, which was designed to serve as a bedside or tabletop clock, but also demoing similar changes that can be made on an Echo Show 8, Echo Show 10, or Echo Show 15

Set up my show 5 no problem but thought I was going mad with my show 8 but you've solved the mystery despite costing twice as much it's more restricted in functionality!! Very useful tutorial!!
I’d been putting up with all that display nonsense for so long. Finally I can actually TELL THE TIME!! 🙏
I HATED my Echo until this tutorial. THANK YOU!
OMG, thank you -- I've been ready to throw my Echo Show against the wall due to the constant flicker and "Quiz Song" and "Question of the Day" and "Jeopardy" and "Wheel of Fortune" displays, which I've angrily yelled out "Alexa DISABLE THAT!" which it doesn't care about. This thing is right underneath my computer monitor, so it keeps trying to draw away my attention when I'm working. Never occurred to me that Night Mode was the answer. I JUST WANT A CLOCK! BE A CLOCK! When I want you to do something else, I'll ask for it!
Anyway, I've been running this for a few mins now with night mode enabled all the time, and so far, no flickers except right after I ask it something, which is understandable and acceptable. After months of searching, it appears I finally have a clock that doesn't keep drawing my attention to it.
MUCH APPRECIATED!
You’re a legend. Was always annoyed how I couldn’t read the time on this thing from across the room. Thanks so kuch
Glad I could help
Finally someone who recognizes the 8 model from the 5. I'm disappointed there are no optional clock faces. If i'm wrong please let me know.
You are correct.
The Echo Show 8/10/15 do not have clock faces.
Only the Echo Show 5 and the discontinued Echo Spot have clock face selections.
Thank you for the clock tips . I’d would never have thought of using 23hrs59second night mode 👍🇦🇺
Glad to help
You saved me HOURS of frustration! Thank you for providing this great tutorial. It is actually helpful to see some of the issues faced with the device, like the long reset issue.
You're welcome!
Thank you so much, I was going to unplug my echo show forever, as the clock kept disappearing, but you were my last resort to fix it and it works . Thank you again !
Many thanks for pointing out the NIGHT MODE, that was the fix. I was totally frustrated and you saved the day.
You are welcome!
So so so appreciative of your user-friendly tutorial. Now when I wake up early am, with eyes squinting not ready to fully open them, I will be able to clearly see the time. Looking forward to browsing your channel for more great tutorials.
I so happy that it's helping you. You might be also interested in an Alexa Skill I created that clearly says the time & date and let's you know if you should go back to sleep. This was so very helpful, thank you so much!
Thank you so much!!! I was able to get my display exactly how I wanted it and not equating hours trying to figure it out! 🎉
Glad I could help!
Useful video, Frank. Thanks for doing it.
Very helpful video! I have the Echo 5 show and when I'm setting the night mode behavior time setting, I can press and hold the minute on or off setting and then I can press it to set it to the exact minute. For instance if I want to make the on/off time setting to 10:59, I press the 55 minute setting and then I can advance the time by one minute with each press.
This was such a great tutorial thank you! Helped me so much
Thank you for the feedback
Thank You..A direct set of instructions , right to the point. no chit chat...Your video is great...
You're welcome!

Beautifully presented tutorial with clear speech and at a sensible pace. Really appreciate this expert help. You have saved me hours and hours trying to find the answers. I have the Show 5 (European version) and although some differences in display, the settings are identical. Many thanks.
Great to hear!
Thank you for sharing this. It was very helpful
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much, very helpful video
Thank you, I am the Night Man and like it in Night Mode 👍🏽
Thank you very much for this video. I was very irritated with their presets so thank you for helping!
Glad I could help!
Great overview.. Thanks
Perfect. Thank you!
Glad it helped!
So helpful. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks you this help me a lot.
Glad to hear that!
very helpful thank you!
You're welcome!
Concise, clear to understand, tutorial that solves the problem. Thank You.
Glad it helped!
Thank you!!!!
Thank you! Have you ever figured out how to get the time larger on the big one, or to keep it from blinking?
If you mean the 10 second blinking, that can be resolved by turning off "Rotate Continuously" on the Echo Show 8 screen:
Settings- Home Content
I haven't found any way to make the clock any bigger as unlike the Echo Show 5, there is only one "clock face"
If you want a temporary large clock, try this Alexa Skill

@@TechenhancedLife thank you so much, Frank!
I found after doing this yesterday that the colors do not matter if you have night mode set for 23 hours and 55 minutes. Background goes to black and the numbers are orange. (Gen 2 and Gen 3 set the same). I also found the time difficult to see at night. I'm using in the bedroom, so obviously don't want too bright, but would like to be able to see the time. Any suggestions. I picked a classic setting. Pleased with your solution to stop all the "nonsense".
Hi, thank for the tips... There is a way to set echo show to not show the content info that i'm playing via bluetooth, I want only the sound
Yes, you can say "Alexa, turn off the screen"
Thanks for this toutorial. I wonder if there is any chance to to get a red clock with black background on echo show 5, any idea ?
If you have the Echo Show 5 set to "Night Mode", it should show red numbers and on a black background.
Settings- Home & Clock- Night Mode- Night Mode Behavior- enabled
I need instructions on changing my time on this device. It is stuck on Daylight saving time. I thought that it would change automatically when the time changed .. what is the answer?
Thank you so much this was very helpful!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Second question I have an echo five and it used to display the time just right but now it has all the symbols up in the top right music etcetera I've tried quite a bit to get rid of them but they stay there what am I missing question mark thank you
Please review the video at 2:40 for settings on Night Mode. The symbols you mention in the top-right maybe notifications or messages that you have received. You can eliminate the symbols by saying: "Alexa, what are my notifications?" and "Alexa, what are my messages?"
Ahhhhhhh fucking thank you. I've been dying to figure out, how to just get the fucking clock on there, big, big thanks!
Can anyone tell me whether the Show 5 in the video is the 2nd Gen (2021) , or the 3rd Gen (2022)? Or is the clock available with both?
It works on both generations of Echo Show 5
It's the 2nd Gen in the video
This video had been so helpful to me in the past. Every so often I go into my Echo Show 8 and disable the stuff that's added itself under Home Content. And it works! But a recent update seems to have added a nasty new wrinkle ... Even when I disabled everything under Home Content it kept rotating to sponsored' content. Worse -- now it's stopped showing anything at all on the bulk of the screen -- no large clock, not even sponsored content. Just a tiny row of icons on the top left, with a tiny clock, temp and weather. And on the top right a new row of stuff I never asked for -- links to Amazon Music, my Alexa shopping list, Favorites,Widgets, etc. No clock that you can read without walking right up to it. Any suggestions?
A follow-up: After rummaging around in the settings, I decided to turn on Do Not Disturb -- and my clock returned to normal! I just did it a few minutes ago, so time will tell. But so far no rotation, no Sponsored content. And I'm not sure what other unknown ramifications enabling Do Not Disturb might have. I've noticed that when I ask Alexa to do something, like set a timer or add something to my Shopping list, Show 8 reverts to the useless blank screen afterwards -- but then after a minute or so, my large clock returned.
Those new small icons in the upper right are the new location for "Widgets" that previously required a swipe-in from the right side.
Do Not Disturb works great and you will still get scheduled alarms and timers, but you will lose incoming notifications, announcements, and incoming calls.
You may want to try the "Night Mode" as described here:

@@TechenhancedLife Thanks! I could've sworn that I followed those instructions before, with no improvement -- but I just did it, and it seems to have worked! Only thing is that the clock is very dim now, during daylight hours. (I've got some visual impairment.) I tried turning the brightness all the way up, but it didn't make it less dim. I guess that's because it's supposedly "nighttime" now ...? It's very low contrast but still readable, so I think it will do. Thanks again!
I have been having this issue for the past week or so on my Show 8. Will have to try this out.
👍👍
Mine will not show the date and time or the background i picked
I want to keep that nice steady display of the time but while it's on I keep getting song videos by a lot of people I don't like and I don't want them to play but they keep coming up and I shut off everything as far as I can tell
The song video popups maybe due to some settings still checked in "Home Content" See the video at 1:19
I had to change my alexa from Ziggy to echo because my dog started barking when he herd the word Ziggy lol now I got alexia for show 8 and echo for other device
Is there a way to display seconds?
I haven't seen an Amazon Echo clock face that does seconds or AM/PM
Ziggy, now I like that one! How do U get a custom name like that. I thought it was only Alexa or Computer.
It depends on the region where you are located. In the US, you can say:
"Alexa, change your wake word"
And Alexa will tell your which wake words are available for your region
I play music and it shows my music song on the screen. I don’t want it to. I want it to play music and show the clock. Is that possible?
Which music service are you using? Do you have an Echo Show 5 or Echo Show 8?
Unfortunately this is not an available feature for the Show 8. Ridiculous lack of programing on their end.
I agree that the Echo Show 5 has a much better choice of clock faces, but with the Echo Show 8/10/15 there are ways to reduce the amount of unwanted information on the screen and get a clock display, just not full screen.
How do you set up that skill though??

@@TechenhancedLife Thank you 🙂
The watch face in echo 8 2nd gen is not same like echo 5 2nd gen why? Echo 8 only has 1
Amazon designed the Echo Show 5 to be more of a bedside clock and the Echo Show 8 to be more of a general-purpose device. Over several years, there have been MANY complaints on the Amazon user forum about the lack of different clock faces on the Echo Show 8, 10, & 15.
@@faengelm So should I go for echo 5 or 8 which one has better speaker?
@@vishalgomes4034 The Echo Show 8 has a better speaker than the Echo Show 5, supports Zoom meetings, and of course a bigger screen. The Echo Show 8 gen 2 has a better camera than the Echo Show 8 gen 1.
Clock & Photo Display menu is completely different on my echo show 8
I'm in the US with this firmware version 7.5.6.1 (PS7561/3837)
Thanks, but my echo show option menu is completely different.
Is there a way in the menu to set the Night Mode to Always On?
My Echo Show 8 still shows ads every few seconds. How do I turn those off?
Is this even in the Night Mode? You could also try "Do Not Disturb"
Swipe down from the top of the screen:
Settings- Do Not Disturb
Does anyone elses echo show 5 randomly revert back to the stock face?? It annoys me and my mom. I wants what i wants not what u wants...sorry been watching Yosemite Sam on max...but seriously is there a fix?
If the ideas in this article do not work for you, you could try the Do Not Disturb setting
Thats so funny mine doesnt have the “modern” option
It may be "region dependent" In the US, the Echo Show 5 has this option
Just turn on do not disturb
If possible, please update.
Also, my wake word is ECHO. Maybe say “device.”
If you are looking for a way to make your device stop responding during this video, you could push the "mic" button on your device to stop it from listening
I’m still getting adds and I turned off everything in content
Did you try the Night Mode?
You can edit out the dead time on the video. Please!!!!! 13:47
Sorry. I will do better in the future. CZcams does not allow editing a video after posting.
Man I followed all your steps and mine still doesn’t want to work
Is this on an Echo Show 5 or Echo Show 8? Are you saying it still showing ads? Are you sure that you added the "night mode" setting?
U can’t get face bigger on show 8 like the time :(
That is correct. Amazon did not choose to offer "clock faces" on the Echo Show 8 as they do on the Echo Show 5. The only device larger than an Echo Show 5 with clock faces is the Echo Hub .
Turn on zoom feature and then you can zoom to the corner where the time is displayed. Then you have full screen time.
Thanks. That works well, except if I say any command that displays something, e,g, weather, then I need to re-engage magnify
echo sucks it needs to display everything big, .. how can it just not show the dam AM/PM by default? and year
Sorry, I haven't found a way to do that
God get to the point
