Welcome back to JAFFNA - a city in the north of Sri Lanka packed with its own CUISINE! Today we are taking you for another unique food experience. We will be joined by Ashok (a Jaffna local) and his family at a CHAOTIC fish market and auction to pick our the FRESHEST SEAFOOD for our family meal. We take it back to Ashok’s family home, where they introduce dishes not many Sri Lankans have ever heard about: KHOOL soup! Khool is a seafood stew mixed with a TON of spices to bring out Jafffna’s rich & deep flavours. The family also cooks us an INCREDIBLE and SPICY prawn curry, crab curry and MORE. Later we visit one of the most important Hindu sites in the whole country to see how the culture differs from the rest of the country and finish our day cooling off at the famous RIO ice cream. What an amazing experience!

I'm a Sri-Lankan and I feel so proud of us when foreigners like you appreciate our culture and the amazing food in here.. Of course Jaffna is such a nice city with lots of different food and I love their dosai, uludu wade and all those tamil cuisine..Specially, Rio ice cream is one of the best ice cream shops in Sri-Lanka.. *I don't know which country u r living but if u go to srilankan restaurant u can find this soup. But taste won't be like real soup*
The Jaffna shrimp or prawn curry is one of the best on my list of Jaffna foods, it goes well with pittu, rice, hoppers etc along with sambol/ Omlet, u can get these in most Tamil eateries worldwide, but look for the one with drumstick or the tiny pea shaped textured Vege (name?) are extra great 😍, also Jaffna prawn samolina Congee soup, A+ too.

Some or many Tamil food eateries in Colombo, UK, CDA etc make Kool soup (mostly called soup despite ground powder of palm root is usually added to thicken the Kool to stew levels) as a rare monthly or weekly special, regularly, at premium price. Delicious seafoods hits your mouth on every bite, but most cooks seem to put bit too much chilly & black pepper mix powder in it, still it's v. addictive after 1st few spoons.

Luke the soup served in a coconut looks so delicious. They also cooked it with okra which helped to provide the thickness. I can almost taste it. I love curries and there seems to be Dal in one of the dishes. The curry spices are so healthy to eat. This trip was very enjoyable for me as it shows a lot of history of Sri Lanka. The ice cream from Rio looked so delicious. I enjoyed this immensely.
No better way to experience authentic traditional food than in a local person's house! Sri Lankan food is very good (hope you got to try their pickled veggies varieties they're awesome!) Great video xox

Jaffna is just one culture luke. When you go into different areas we have very different styles of cooking in less than 50 km's. And do you believe we can cook a super delicious and healthy meal without using a single drop of oil yet packed with full of flavours thats our traditional way of cooking

Guys just a note: the family and all the locals you see here, they're SURVIVORS, REAL SURVIVORS! All of them would have gone through the 30 year civil war which ended 10 years ago. Each and every one of them would have witnessed deaths of their relatives and friends due to the war, either by bombs or by getting shot. Their educated relatives and friends would have migrated as refugees to the west, leaving this people behind to rebuild their lives and villages. The sudden separation must've been painful. It is not something easy, and yet they can still smile and live as if everything is normal. Well the situation is good now, but the trauma they would've suffered is unimaginable, with bombs being dropped everywhere and they had to constantly run around for protection either in underground bunks or at camps. Many would have been injured. They could've witnessed or been victims of rapes, kidnappings and countless robberies as well. On one side the Sri Lankan Army, the other side the LTTE, and yet another side the Indian Army. All together murdered more than 100,000 people in Jaffna over 30 years. So let's salute these survivors and wish them well in rebuilding their lives. To Luke and Sabrina, thank you so much for showing us this beautiful region that has suffered so much and is slowly rebuilding itself. Also thank you for appreciating the kindness and hospitality of these beautiful kind-hearted people of Jaffna!
Most of the Tamil refugees who went to the west are not from the war zone. They made fake identifications with fake stories and went to those countries as refugees. The real people face the war and suffering stay and faced it. I am from Negombo and a few of my Tamil friends to the UK and they said to the UK immigration that they came from Jaffna and army is looking to kill them :-)). And now they are proud citizens of UK :-))))...
@@QubitTechnologies very true. Many economic migrants/opportunists. But still I know that most are from War Zones in Jaffna and Northeast. It's ok, good riddance with the Negombo opportunists. Less burden on the government.

Very interesting video, especially as its an area unknown to most Sri Lankans due to the war. What is equally strange is that while most religious places of worship want you to cover up before entering, the Nallur temple insists on you being topless before being allowed entry. Just a pity that the rule only applies to men.
