South Head from Bowden Bridge ¦ Derbyshire Peak District walk

  • Join us in this video on one of our regular trips to the Derbyshire Peak District village of Hayfield. Just a short walk of just under 6 miles, we start from the Hayfield Camping & Caravanning Club site near the Bowden Bridge car park. As the initial part of the route gently rises towards Mount Famine, stunning views open up across to Kinder Scout and along the upper Sett Valley.
    On the day we chose to skirt behind Mount Famine, but it's easy to cross the summit if you fancy some extra exercise.
    The final ascent of South Head is quite steep, but not too taxing. After admiring the panoramic views, we made the short but steep descent, and dropped back down to Hayfield along old walled tracks for some well earned refreshment! Following that, a short walk along Kinder Road or alternatively, the path beside the River Sett, takes you back to the start point.
    A great short walk if you fancy something a little easier but still with stunning views. A few gates, but no stiles to contend with along the route!
    Many thanks for watching!

    Nice one, Des. I've only been up Mount Famine and South Head from the main road by Chinley Churn. It is a deceptive hill and a hard slog up. Great vlog as always, and I'm glad there was no bushwacking this time. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi Chris. It was quite a relaxing change just folling a path rather than having to rediscover one! 😁 My favourite route up there is along that ridge from Elle Bank and across Mount Famine, but Maria wanted an easyish one.
      All the best & catch you soon👍

    Glad the weather stayed nice for you des. It actually looked like good walking conditions. A bit steep up and greasy down but all told a wonderful visual for the day. Set you up for a nice pint - we deserved. All the best. Mark

      Hi Mark. Yes, nice walking weather. Not too warm, and the rain only arrived atvthe end to drive us into the shelter of the pub! 😁 Not that we usually need an excuse!

    A top hike that one. Love those 360 degree views.
    Seems to be some great hikes direct from the Hayfield site. Will definitely get there in the new year Des.
    Picking up the Motorhome tomorrow.

      Hi Dave. Beautiful walking around there. Shame the site closes over winter, but we always visit once or twice a year! Noticed from Insta that you've picked the motorhome up! Will watch your vid soon👍😁

    Hi both hehe Maria, forgive Des 🤭 You do find some lovely walks and great that you had a nice day for this 6 mile one. Love the sound of the river and I like the sound of the waterfalls that are around there and the hills are so green with lovely views 🙂 That looked a lovely walk and the pub looked so relaxing too :) ~ Anna 👍

    • @DesGreene
      @DesGreene  Před 10 měsíci

      Hi Anna. It is a beautiful walk. Not too strenuous, apart from up to South Head, but plenty of views while you're catching your breath anyway! 😁
      Many thanks for watching! See you soon👍☺

    An easy one with no scrabbling. 😂😂. She got ya on that one. 😂. It is so pretty. Didn’t look like a bad walk at all. The path looked fairly nice in places until it quickly became a narrow path. Y’all made it-tap, tap. Hopefully Little Tommy is watching. Nice hike.

    • @DesGreene
      @DesGreene  Před 10 měsíci +1

      It is a really nice walk. Great views, and not too difficult! Hopefully Tommy is OK, but I was wondering afterwards if he might have passed away and his owners left his collar on his favourite walk? One of life's little mysteries!👍😁

    Lovely walk again Des, hope Tommy was watching! 😁 Hoping to do South Head and Mount Famine myself next year at some point. Hope the Sunbeam went down well at the end 🍻 Did you end up in the Sportsman again? I remember you saying you had a lovely meal there a while ago. All the best 👍

      Hi Patrick. I hope Tommy was watching...hopefully not from on high in doggie heaven! 😁 We did have a meal in the Sportsman on the Friday night, but after this hike we just sampled The George and The Packhorse👍☺

    A very nice looking walk Des. I should do Mount Famine and South Head sometime, perhaps turn it into a circuit over Kinder? Good to see you both enjoying a 'liquid lunch' (as my granddad used to call it) too. Any decent fungi? Bye for now, Chris

    • @DesGreene
      @DesGreene  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Hi Chris. It does make a decent circuit over Kinder. And if you head out to Brown Knoll from South Head, you don't need to lose/regain too much altitude. Some nice camping spots around Cluther Rocks too, if you want to break the journey up! 😁
      We didn't see much in the way of funghi to be honest, the path up through the woods on Elle Bank is usually best for that.
      Cheers for watching & catch you soon👍
