I disagree, I would gladly short Disney or Nikola (well back when their company was a thing). Shorting companies that are doing something amazing like Tesla is frustrating though, which is why it is awesome to see these shirts lose big.

@@cscors2-bi8lj bought a 2020 when I didn't know what I was doing, I was up like 100% at some point and sold, looked into the company as time went on and ended up allocating a large amount of my portfolio when it dipped 180 and downwards, currently one of the best decisions I've ever made and planning to hold another 5-10 years!
Started in March of 2013... 200 shares at $50 (of then). Had a ball the first year... then nothing happened (on the stock value) for 4 years, but sold nothing... slept on them... then it dropped in early 2019 and the bears were all predicting "bankwutcy". I therefore analyzed the fundamentals (I mean by that the real BUSINESS fundamentals, not what some clown analysts call fundamentals... i.e. quarterly financial statements!), and came to the conclusion that it was the right time to buy. Bought 100 shares in June 2019, and 100 more in July. We all know what happened since!
I still own all of them (well, they grew 15 fold in number...) except the few I sold to buy myself a Tesla! And I will hold them until the prospects of a) the energy division, b) FSD/robotaxies, and c) Optimus are correctly factored into the share price.
The advantage of having a $20 average acquisition price is that it works wonders for sleep quality when the share dips!

@@av_oid I have one, lack of stalks doesn't bother me at all for indicators...a little for lights, but it has auto high beam adjustments so not a huge deal. A HUD would be awesome...but other than that, the refresh is so much better than the previous model

My retirement is excessively funded thanks to my Tesla stock. Elon Musk is a predictor on par with Tony Seba. On last year’s investor day speech he predicted 2024 Tesla stock would go off in a slow disappointing start, and come good later in the year. My goodness, how he was right.
Tesla’s battery storage revenues for last quarter is equal to or greater than Porsche’s revenue and growing very fast.
Tesla has no moat around its battery business, as Chinese CATL and BYD etc, will gradually eat away their margin as they become more well known. For now, Tesla relies on its name brand. Software argument is laughable, a 13 year old can write an if statement - if grid rate is high use battery, If grid rate is low charge the battery lol. I've been in software consulting business most of my life, I know how ignorant top management is and willing to shell out big money for something new and shiny, even if it's dead simple. Energy storage business is new and mysterious to most. Therefore, you can upsell a lot by making it sound mysterious and complicated. In early days of iPhone and Android (2011, 12) I've sold several very simple mobile apps for tens of thousands dollars of what took me a a couple of days to make. Many of them amounts to just less than a hundred lines of code.

@@GenRicOpekc of course I'm oversimplifying the software argument. But grid integration logic is no where near as complicated as AI or FSD. It doesn't need a super computer to train a neuronet lol. Any competent small software team can do just as good job as Teslas. Any more that is an overkill. To that end Tesla does not have a unique software edge over competitors.

Tesla is not trying to be the only player, their goal is to accelerate the world towards sustainable energy, if CATL and BYD succeed, so does Tesla...and they have a manufacturing competency that is unrivaled, with vertical integration past what Apple was able to accomplish, by also tackling the hardware manufacturing internally. This is very hard to do for almost all companies, hence why most are not vertically integrated.
The new model 3 is truly the best EV. We should be so thankful to Tesla and Elon for keeping America on top of technology

My stock in Tesla has been like a slow-moving lottery win. It has grown from a small bet twelve years ago with their IPO into a substantial portion of my retirement portfolio. One more ten-fold increase, should it happen, and I am there. Retirement is done, and my robot chauffeur is taking my wife and me on tour.

I saw only one yt vid that got it right. It IS the energy business. Tesla does not even have to make the batteries. Just megapack the batteries and bundle in the software. The software is the key, as it was in South Australia at the beginning.

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the way Hedge Funds make money is they sell shares - they don’t possess - at a certain price in the expectation that when the time comes that they have to deliver those shares they’ll be able to buy them at a much lower price. …..making a profit based on the difference in the two prices. Obviously they will make a loss if instead of the price falling it actually rises. Hedge companies may want to crystallise their loses if they think the price of Tesla will rise. This involves buying shares in Tesla. Obviously if Hedge Funds are buying this will push the stock price up. Maybe this explains the recent huge jump in the price of Tesla shares.

Forward P/E of over 102 is insane for a company with declining sales, revenue and margins. On energy storage, BYD outsold themby a significant margin last year, even though nobody paid attention. Tesla just barely beat sales estimates that were massively revised down over the past year. There is no rational justification for the current rally.

@@Dave-cf4vd What's funny about sales in decline? EV sales overall were up YoY in 2Q. Tesla sales were down by 5%.That follows a 1Q where overall EV sales were up globally YoY, but Tesla sales also dropped.
If you have enough money you can buy enough of a stock, sell it when it slightly moves up - so it tanks...and then you re-buy it. It goes up again. You sell again with a profit - which leads to it tanking again. So you buy it again. It goes up. You again sell at some point with a profit. It goes down again...and so on.
Pretty much a crime like insider trading.
If a few billionaires are forced to sell their jets it will be a good thing for the planet.

I do love all this short term drama - buy, sell, buy, sell, win, lose. The only winners are the brokers. Invest in Tesla if you believe in them long term, if not invest in something else. All the noise is just noise.

It's hedging your bets. You buy the stock and do short deals. If the stock price goes down you win on the shorts, buying more stock on the winnings, preserving your wealth. If the stock price goes up the shorts liquidate pushing the price of the stock up, preserving your wealth.
I cannot think that these big hedge funds are so daft as to not look beyond car sales in 2024 though. Odd they shorted.
These types of moves are common in stocks that have a heavy short position and all it takes is a short or long term catalyst that brings more money into the stock and then the short squeeze cycle begins. The short squeeze cycle pushes out shorts, forces them to buy back the stock which increases the price and that pushes out even more shorts, forcing them to buy back the stock. This will continue until a large chunk of shorts have washed out of a particular stock. I'm not a fan of shorting and think it shouldn't be allowed to exist, but there are people that use it as a hedge tool. As far as Tesla as an investment, I have a hard time investing in something that trades at 80x next year's earnings, who underperformed the last 3 quarters compared to estimates and have a 5-year projected growth rate to be around 15-20%.
word of advice, to potential Tesla investors. The game of investing is about patience, if you have it you will be rewarded for your ability to spot excellence before others do and maintain proper emotional intelligence, not to be swayed by the ill informed or those that have alternative motives.

Elon mentioned that this August he will announce, part of his robot taxi plan. Elon can combine the X’s information with his Tesla vehicle. This could show movies, by independent filmmakers, it could be a major source of information while a person is traveling. Is a plane on time, make a reservation, order a meal, etc., It could advertise local restaurants or businesses. TV screens could be for the people in the back seat. It could replace the use of a smart phone while in a vehicle. You are on your way to Wegmans and you could add to your order for pick up.
Part of the spike in the share price might well be because many short sellers are panicking and cutting their losses. The more the share price rises the vaster the costs and likely losses for them. Margin calls bite, they can escalate quickly. Shorting is a very dangerous gamble.

There is nothing inherently unethical about short selling - sometimes dumping a loser is the best choice. Only large shareholders get noticed when they sell, but small shareholders also short sell

It's so heart warming to read about Tesla short sellers. Why would anyone bet against Elon Musk, someone who created Tesla, Space X, Optimus, Boring Company, Dojo, xAI, Neuralink, Grok, Solar City and other ealier ventures that sold for hundreds of millions. I'm in today, got 60 shares at $163. Better late than never
um,, I follow tsla,, and you are extremely wrong saying tsla was most shorted stock in USA,, in fact the short % was well within range around 2-3% the current short interest is 3.8% and its not 'scary grizzly bears around every corner,, its the market makers having to keep up with groups of Indian traders pumping the stock to each other.
At the end of the day, FSD is nowhere being ready. I’ve watched my first FSD video in years and it simply hasn’t improved at all, not significantly anyways. FSD needs to work 99.999999 of the time and it needs to be approved. That’s not happening in North America anytime soon. Car sales are down YoY. The Cybertruck is a flop (joke of the internet). The Chinese EVs will take over, nothing can be done to prevent this. Robots are also years if not decades away from being a commercially viable product. Etc.

It's going up because the stock was artificially beaten down by the general mainstream narrative, which was fully reversed after earnings. Also some FOMO.
The shorters regularly get burned with Tesla. Problem is that Musk is a mercurial genius, many irons in the fire. Tricky stock to trade, even long. But shorts are stupid. I trend trade, so the price can be anything so long as it looks like up. But remember, current price is not company "value" but "expectation", and closing price is usually indicative of trend..
So Sam is a stockbroker now, currency speculator and corporate financial advisor. Hmm… no.. stick with battery cars Sam.

One has to think about what is possible in the future, whether that is 1 year, 3 years or 13 years away.

@@ignaciomachuca3750 I’m genuinely curious if your view of that world is better or worse than current conditions with so many speeders (most who are also distracted). While there are certainly trade-offs, I think the future leads to net safer roads.
FSD is already safer than the average knob. 25% of drivers are medicated.

If you are smart you can tell this was pump and dump; and you could have made a lot of money. There would be few if any shorts on Tesla stock which had dropped to 150 half what it was worth a year ago; it is now back up so the next question someone consider shorting will be asking is - will Tesla meet even the lowered profit expectations when it is announced in 1 week? Tesla made 1.1 billion last quarter - do you think they will this quarter? It is this question shorts will be considering; if they think it will make that - they won't short but if they think they won't - they will. What do you think? did they make 1.1 billion?
Gates would have purchased around $300 before the dip, so if he shorted, he would still be way ahead.

GM's p/e is only 5!! Obviously GM is the better investment here!
@@Dave-cf4vd P/E is just one metric to go by and no, I wouldn't be investing in GM anytime soon.
The thing is with low P/E is that the market has priced in modest predicted earnings.
The trouble with high P/E is that the market has priced in high future earnings.
That makes the stock much more susceptible to drops if those profits aren't realized. It also means that future profits are less likely to have a positive effect on stock price if good profits are realised as those profits are likely to have already been priced in.
But with Tesla stock, all metrics go out the window. I don't think that I've seen a company report a halving of its profits and seen the share price rally. I don't think that I've seen a company report two quarters of falling sales and see the stocks rally further!

@@robertlarder1907 Not many in the US. I hardly ever see one now. There are also not many convertibles or mini vans. The Miata is the only affordable roadster. GM and Ford have stopped making sedans.
