  • Shredding and chipping are great ways to reduce the volume of garden waste but what is the difference between the two types of machines? The main difference is the type of material they can cope with - a shredder deals with soft leafy material, whereas a chipper can cope with harder, woody material.
    At STIHL, we have a range of petrol and electric shredders and chippers with varying power levels to cope with large or small volumes of hard or soft material. Please note that the GH 370 petrol shredder is not available from January 2021.
    🔶 STIHL GHE 105 🔶
    The GHE 105 is a compact electric chipper/shredder, ideal for chipping branches up to 35mm in diameter and shredding soft material such as leaves and plant trimmings. The cloverleaf design provides two openings where softer shredding material can be inserted down through the wider opening into the shredder blade and the four clover leaves allow harder material to be fed down at an angle onto the chipper blade. Access to change the blades or to clean out the chute is via the two plug screws on the front.
    🔶 STIHL GHE 150 🔶
    The GHE 150 is an electric garden shredder that comes with a more powerful electric motor and larger twin chipping blades than the GHE 105. It’s perfect for chipping larger volumes of hard material up to 35mm in diameter but is less suited to leafy material. The blades are reversible for increased longevity too.
    🔶 STIHL GHE 250 🔶
    The GHE 250 is a multi-purpose electric wood chipper/shredder. Compared to the GHE 105 and 150 it has a larger array of both chipping and shredding blades of different shapes and sizes designed to both split, chip and shred. This makes it suitable for processing a wider variety of garden materials including harder branches up to 30mm in diameter and softer materials such as flower cuttings and leaves.
    We also offer the ATZ 150 kit to convert the STIHL GHE 250 into a dedicated chipper like the GHE 150.
    🔶 STIHL GHE 355 🔶
    The GHE 355 is the most powerful electric chipper/shredder in our range. It’s designed for processing large volumes of both hard and soft garden waste and our patented blade reversal system allows you to easily switch between the chipping or shredding functions at the flick of a switch.
    The clockwise rotation of the blades will efficiently chip hard branches up to 35mm with the window showing a brown icon to indicate that it’s in chipping mode and a green icon to indicate shredding mode. Turn the machine off and switch the lever to change modes.
    🔶 STIHL GH 370 S 🔶
    The GH 370 S is the first petrol chipper in the STIHL range. The GH 370 is a powerful chipper for mainly harder woody material up to 45mm in diameter. Thanks to a powerful petrol engine it’s an ideal choice for easily wheeling around a large garden or plot of land where there’s no access to an electrical power supply.
    With chipping blades, and a durable aluminium straight feed shoot it’s ideal for reducing large volumes of harder garden waste.
    *Please note that the GH 370 shredder is no longer available from January 2021.
    🔶 STIHL GH 460 🔶
    The largest chipper and shredder in our range is the GH 460. It’s designed for a high working volume of thick branches up to 60mm in diameter, as well as soft material. The large rubber tyres make it easy to move around a large garden or plot of land where there’s no access to an electrical power supply.
    The STIHL GH 460 features our twin-chamber system which allows the different types of garden waste to be fed into the correct blades. The softer, leafy material is fed straight down the main chute directly on to the shredder blades, whilst a secondary chute drops down at the back for harder material to be fed straight into the chipper blades below.
    All STIHL shredders and chippers come with a 5-year warranty but to find out more information, click the product link below or contact your local STIHL Approved Dealer: shop.stihl.co.uk/pages/dealer....

      @Chris thanks for your comment. The GH 370 shredder is not being replaced I'm afraid. It was discontinued due to generally low demand and so most people have naturally moved towards the GH 370 S chipper instead as that is capable of chipping larger volumes of hard material as well as a small amount of some green waste. We do not sell a GH 460 S - we only sell a GH 460 which has twin chambers for both harder material and softer, leafy waste. These are sold via our STIHL Approved Dealer network. You can find your nearest dealer here: shop.stihl.co.uk/pages/dealer-locator. Thanks, STIHL GB

      Hi Aaron, some of the models are better suited to shredding softer material than others, and it does explain which ones are better for which purpose in the video or in the caption above. Alternatively, we have also created a guide to our chippers and shredders over on the STIHL Blog which takes you through the different options available and which ones are best suited to which: blog.stihl.co.uk/stihl-chippers-and-shredders-guide/

    Hi, will either of these be suitable for flax? cheers.

    • @STIHLGB
      @STIHLGB  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi, thanks for your comment. I have spoken to our Technical team about this and they have said that shredding fibrous leaves of most types (flax, palm etc) would have the potential to clog our type of shredders. If you were to shred the flax along with dry material, with a shredder model that is suited to mixed material such as the GHE 355, then this would reduce the chances of it clogging, but its possible it may still cause some issues. if you are only shredding flax, our models may not be suitable. Thanks, STIHL GB

    • @STIHLGB
      @STIHLGB  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi, thanks for your comment, but I'm afraid our chippers and shredders aren't designed for this so it wouldn't work for that purpose. It would also dull the blades very quickly too, so it then wouldn't work for the purpose it is designed for. If you want to break up large clumps of soil, you would be better looking at a tiller or something similar. We have dedicated tillers which you can find out more about here: czcams.com/video/21l25N0QGWY/video.html&
      Alternatively, we also have a pick tine attachments for our KombiEngines and MultiEngines, which can be used to break up soil. You can find out more about these tools here: www.stihl.co.uk/STIHL-Products/028192/KombiSystem-and-MultiSystem.aspx

    Why do you have to keep pushing the the branches in , the blades should pull the branches automaticly into the machine?? Like the bosch AXT 25 TC.

    • @STIHLGB
      @STIHLGB  Před 6 měsíci

      Hi, thank you for your comment. We use a different blade system which can require some light feed pressure to guide the material into the rotating disc system on our larger models. On a number of models we recommend inserting longer branches at a slight angle to help guide them along the right-hand chute wall. Full guidance is in each owner’s manual. Thanks, STIHL GB.

    I've just purchased a GH370S as a chipper, your video implies I can buy a shorter shoot/cutter to use it as a shredder. However I can't find anyone who sells the alternative. I have been supplied with ATZ300.0S , which I understand is the chipper unit...What is the number of the shredder unit???
    Another issue I have is the segmented rubber shoot entry , has the segments still joined in the centre...I assume this is part the manufacturing process, which should have been cut free by STIHL before shipping. The instructions don't cover it.
    The Briggs Stratton engine is also interesting, since the instructions talk about turning petrol on and setting the choke....My engine doesn't have either and has a pre-set throttle.... All a little confusing when you 1st assemble the unit.
    Just read your note from Jan'2021 ...the shredder unit is no longer available .... How misleading is that with a video dated March 2021 !!!!!

    • @STIHLGB
      @STIHLGB  Před 2 lety

      Hi, thank you for your comment. You're right that the shredder unit is no longer available, however, the video was actually created and first published in 2020 - the March date on the video is due to us making a small adjustment to it. I'm sorry you think it's misleading though. We will move the reference to the GH 370 further up in the caption above. In the meantime, I have also spoken to our technical team about your other comments. They have said that it is quite normal for the rubber to not be completely separated when it’s new, as it helps it to keep its shape during storage and shipping. So it isn't a manufacturing error, but we appreciate that it could be clearer in the Instruction manual and I have fed that back. It should be easy to break apart when you first use the machine. We've also looked at the choke but we don't think there is any mention of the choke in our STIHL instruction manual - are you referring to the Briggs & Stratton manual that’s also supplied with the machine? If so, unfortunately, we don't have much influence over the contents of this and it’s mainly for reference only. If you just use the STIHL instruction manual, we hope that will avoid any confusion. Thanks for getting in touch, STIHL GB

    • @STIHLGB
      @STIHLGB  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Keith, I understand you have also been in touch with our Customer Services team and I apologise that you have had some conflicting advice. There was a small misunderstanding in our technical services team but we have double checked and we can confirm that the triangular rubber parts are connected by a central tab to keep the rubber in shape during storage. As you have already correctly done, breaking the tab will allow material to be fed into the machine. Thanks, STIHL GB
