Prince's Drummer Breaks Down 5 Iconic Grooves

- Hannah Welton worked with Prince from 2012 until his passing in 2016 as part of his backing band, 3RDEYEGIRL.
A product of the social age, she got her big break when Prince discovered her on CZcams, so it’s no wonder Welton emphasizes the importance of practicing regularly and sharing your playing online (“Because you never know who’s going to come across your work!”)
A bonus of working with Prince was that he was an exceptional drummer and groove writer himself, so when you were playing parts he’d written, you knew they’d be perfect for each song.
Enough of the backstory. Bring on Hannah Welton’s 5 favorite Prince grooves!
0:00 - Intro
0:40 - "Let's Work"
3:36 - "Purple Rain"
6:45 - "777-9311"
9:46 - "Mountains"
11:57 - "Musicology"

Whoever decided to illuminate the set with this purple light is a bloody genius :) The effect is fantastic!
Glad you dig it!
AGREED!
Prince decided Purple is the color for everything
He was killed for these grooves....
If princes musical ability is not already obvious, you can tell talking to anyone who played with him. They always speak about how he made them better and increased their musicality and dynamic range
FACTS
On the early records Prince played all the instruments
He was killed for these grooves...

I can't even imagine being in the presence of Prince. To be selected as his drummer says volumes about your talent!!! Well done!!
THANK YOU, MY FRIEND FOR THIS VERY BRIEF DRUM LESSON 🥁
Agreed!
777-93 -11 always curious about that h hat part-- thanks for breaking it down!! I agree Musicology ranks up there with Teena Marie's " Square Biz" as one of funkiest grooves, ever!
Define her talent according to Prince😂
@@01derendorf Yea...exactly
Very nice lesson. Some parts of the grooves are fairly simple. But the nuances she employs are great musicianship.
Cheers Bill!
Like Stewart Copeland says, youre still getting paid playing a simple 8th note ride pattern on the high hats.
I remember following her on CZcams back before she was married and before Prince found her. I am so happy to see Hannah getting her recognition. Such a talented player and a cool person.
This was absolutely amazing! Hannah is an excellent orator which compliments her versatility on the kit. Her enthusiasm is genuine and she is magnetic. I would love to see her break down Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad some day. Great video!
I would love to know if they ever did Hot Thing 👍
A most skillful percussionist breaking down the rhythm tracks of a VERY MUCH missed master musician-the LATE GREAT Prince Rogers Nelson! He left us almost five years ago-hearing Hannah playing these beats composed by Prince makes one think of the music he could have given us if he were still here on Earth! This man left us MUCH too soon!!!
The intentionally inconsistent, swelling hihat in Musicology was SO cool - as Hannah herself says, the small things make the biggest difference! Such a great lesson, thanks so much
All about those little nuances!
not to mention many of prince's tracks defy the basic formulas.. slight things deliberately out of time.. keep the listener interested and guessing.. always brings something different each time you listen.
As a music teacher, I wish kids realized how goddamn cool it is to be a *musician* and not just a star who hogs the spotlight and gets all the Instagram likes. Hope a few kids watch this and ask their parents for a practice kit.
Yup, it happened, but it was to cover Slipknot, not Prince 🤘
@@johnvcougar Slipknot is cool man.
Hope the kiddos don’t read your comments so they are not taught to curse the God who blessed us with music and the talents and gifts we have been given to enjoy!
I like how Hannah is just as enthusiastic and focused when talking about the (more apparently) `easier' grooves as the `harder' ones. That kind of professional attention to detail and precision, while still keeping it all about the feel, is really important for students (and we're all students) to hear and see modeled
Always have loved knowing how to play Prince's compositions. I knew Prince was a genius from day one. RIP Prince
She's so humble and down to earth, and as a weaker drummer I feel like I can easily relate to her description of her process of learning, which makes her a good teacher. But she shreds the drums.....she's a humble badass.
Yeah I nearly bailed after the first two grooves then she brings out all that hi hat magic and drops in the toms and aux hihat. Glad I stuck around!
so cool that she explains the way Prince told her, that sometimes are different from how most drummers would play (like the hi hat on ´Let´s work´).
I also noticed she referred to Prince "teaching" her, as opposed to "directing." I imagine it was the latter but she accepted it as and describes it as the former, which is the epitome of professionalism and class.
The video clip of Prince playing “Let’s Work” live is actually the track “Cool” that he wrote for The Time. Be great if someone broke down the drum intro on “Shhh” from The Gold Experience as that is an overlooked classic for me.
Noticed that right away, as well. “Cool” is still a sick track, though.
I think everyone sees it except the person that inserted that instead of a Let's Work clip.
Came here to say this.
i was 'bout to say...
@@dreamerrt216 IIRC, they merged a lot those live (maybe?) Coulda just grabbed the part where it was "Cool."
Now these are some GREAT tips! Thanks Hannah, and Prince :)
I appreciate the way she thinks about learning different groves and explains them. She is a GREAT representative for Prince’s music. She is so respectful and not egotistical. Excellent teacher.
very open and humble drum lesson - no apparent ego getting involved - much appreciated
🥁 OMG mad skills!! Your technique
is impeccable & your enthusiasm
contagious. Thank you so much for
a phenomenal breakdown video! 😊
Thank you Hannah for breaking down these amazing songs. Hearing the background information makes the enjoyment of the songs even better. I wish Prince had made videos like this!!! Thank you again Hannah.
Cheers Jacqui!
This is the greatest video I’ve seen. Such an emphasis on small details that make a big differences. The real nuances between ordinary and extraordinary. It demonstrates both Prince’s mastery of his tunes and her ability to learn, play, and then teach them to others. Gold stars for days!
Nice one Hannah! Thanks for sharing these great grooves, and breaking them down. Wow, how musical Prince was, and what a great sense of style and flare he had, it must have been a great joy to work with him!
Nice job Hanna! Glad you make it! You explained crystal clear all the parts. And a special mention to the purple light. Love it!
Thanks for posting this about Prince, and how he showed you the difference small changes can make.
Nice to hear your work solo Hannah. Having seen y'all live, it was really easy to tell why he chose you as you fit right into the groove. You and Ida keep that funk line straight and I'm sure he had a great time working with you. RIP Prince. May y'all keep groovin on! Happy New Year!
Happy New Year!
Outstanding! Thanks so much for this! You Rock! I really miss him!
Thank you so much for #4 Mountains is a top 3 Prince song for me!
I already consider Prince the greatest musical mind of my lifetime and somehow I'm still always finding even more evidence to support that statement. Amazing.
This is so awesome! One of my favorite drummers and one of my favorite artists- Prince. I grew up with Purple Rain. So excited about this video.
incredibly talented drummer. can't wait to watch the next video.
Absolutely brilliant! Thanks so much for sharing.
This is awesome Hannah!! Prince's sound and unique style is completely amazing
WOOOOAH! "Mountains" is such a sick groove
Thank you for this. What a treat!
I started playing drums a little bit last year, moving from guitar and vocals. I love Prince's songs and creativity.
Paisley Park, Purple Rain, Raspberry Beret, were the first songs I sat down to learn when I got my set. I love how you explained the nuances he desired.
yeah, CZcams suggested this video to me and I'm so glad I watched. 3rd Eye Girl was one of those Prince projects I wish had gotten further than it did. I loved the one album and wish there was more music. Hannah's so personable and fun to watch, but wicked talented. It was so cool hearing just the drum parts and being able to hear the rest of the song playing in my head
Outstanding. Thank you for the breakdown.
I love drums, beats, rhythm... I love Prince..... and I just fell in love with Hannah. What an amazing drummer and teacher!!
Great. Learnt some new things, and love the grooves and setup. Sounds amazing.
What an awesome person you are, Hannah. Loved it !!! Made my day
Very cool insight into Prince’s attention to detail. Sounds awesome!
Hannah,
I came across this pretty much accidentally. I'm a guitar player, but I had the opportunity to work with a drummer who had played with Prince. I enjoyed your video. I'm going to continue watching your videos because it might help me in creating better drum tracks for my own songwriting. Way to go!
This is an amazing channel! Your content helps me to understand drums even though I've never played them. Thank you so much!
Fabulous and fascinating. Thanks Hannah, thanks Drumeo.
Awesome as always Hannah Love to see your great Drum playing
the mix on the kit is so good! That snare!!! great video!
Welcome back Hannah Thanks for this I've turned a lot to funk and alot of what Prince did in my playing, I hope you, Joshua and the kids have a great New Year
So good! Thanks for this great video!
Great video! Love the insights, thanks Hannah!!
Very Very Good Video. You were truly blessed to work with an Absolute Legend. Thank you for sharing.
This was fun. Thanks for sharing. So many subtleties.
Great video...you are so blessed to have been apart of Princes music and to have known him.
Stay safe and healthy.
Beauty in the details. Masterful.
Thank you for sharing
Love the way you broke this down, miss seeing you play. I use to watch you in Chicago with Bellevue Suite and had a couple nice conversations with your dad, God bless!
Thank you for sharing some of your experience. Thank you for tips. I'm just beginning to learn drums
The consistency and cleanliness of her playing is amazing, you can distinctly hear every single note played. On top of that she is a great communicator.
Wow! That was very cool! John Blackwell was one of my favorites ever, but I really enjoyed learning these riffs from you!
Thank you Hana u are Blessed i saw Prince 3 times in Va and He inspired me like u to play some guitar !Love it all about making music
Hannah is playing every beat with passion
What a cool behind the scene as some would say. Loved his music. Such a talent He was. You had a fantastic opportunity even though your are a wonderful drummer, I'm sure you learned some amazing beats with Prince. Thanks for the lession.
I love how the most subtle changes can completely flip a groove on its head.
So fabulous! I'm just 4 lessons into drumming (as a "mature" musician), the Let's Work groove is the first I learned. So at first, I thought "I can already do this - awesome!"... Then Hannah explained the nuances - SO much to learn! X
Hannah You are amazing!! My goodness, so inspiring!
Prince was such an incredible drummer himself. Full kudos to anyone every single one of his drummers!
This is awesome, thanks Hannah!
I had the honour of seeing Prince live before he passed and I distinctly remember thinking the band was one of the best I’d ever heard. Never over playing or egoistic - always rock solid but still super groovy. This woman is a shining example of how musicians should support the artist 👏
Amazing! I know nothing of drumming but appreciate good drumming when I hear it. So interesting to understand how detailed Mr. Prince was and when he instructed and corrected to achieve perfection according to him. And he was also so pedagogical, I presume, to learn his musicians this perfection.
Loved this,was Awesome Thank you
This is awesome. What a privilege for her, being taught by one of the Greats! #princerogersnelson 💜
Thanks so much I learned a lot!
She's very charming and talented, lights looks amazing!
You're blessed and you know it, and you stay natural and humble.
No doubt Prince must have genuinely loved you.
Much respect, young Lady.
Dynamics! This video is a great demo of the power of DYNAMICS! Great Video and a great player Hannah!
Oh wow, can we get more of this beautiful mix of inspiring anecdotes and energizing grooves of not necessarily the first Prince songs you'd think of? This is overwhelmingly fantastic!
Smooth professionalism, thank you once more!
Hey, sweet that the snares can be heard when the kick is played
You have made very clear, what was really going on the recordings. Especially 777 9311. That was a very nice presentation.
This was great Hannah. I miss Prince so much he was the greatest musicians ever. Have heard that he could play all instrument in his songs!
Very cool how she explains some of the nuances with her "vibe"... you can see how being in his band would be a full musical adventure
I really enjoyed this. You are solid & I definitely respect your drumming
Amazing!
That Plectrumelectrum album is badass af! Cool to see Hannah still doing things and talking about her time with the band
Truth 💯
Thank you Hannah! I don't play drums but the funky "one" is essential gettin my groove on. Nice to see deum notes - notation different from violin and clarinet. Really fun to hear this - appreciate you demonstration💜
Purple Rain came out when I was in 9th grade and what a power groove! I have always loved this groove and have had an affinity for grooves in Prince's music. Having attended high school in the 80s I enjoyed many of the great grooves from 1999 and Purple Rain were favorites of mine. Another great groove of Princes, though someone else made it famous was the drum part on "Nothing Compares To You" which is a slow, saucy groove. I was just introduced to your drumming and I really like your style. Very cool indeed!
…really enjoyed this, brilliantly taught and communicated. Great player, wow.
Thank you hannah
I got to go to Paisley Park recently. It’s actually just a short drive from where I live. I recommend going there and getting a tour.
Great to see that she was enlightened by tutorials. When I saw her playing with him. I was impressed. Love the album they made together. A lot of my favourite grooves from the Purple Yoda.
Super talented musician! Hope that Hannah, Ida & Donna record together again in future.
This was incredible for ANY musician.
Awesome thanks!
Great job on explaining, btw u r very very talented thanks 4 sharing
Your drums sound great Hannah! Nicely done👊
Awesome video Hannah an insight into the mind of prince musically thankyou very much U an awesome talent Xx
Just awesome
I saw a video of Hannah when she must have been about 14 , she was playing along to a song ,and I was really struck by her talent , it’s great to see that she really became a top professional musician , it must have been incredible playing for Prince
Thanx Hannah, That was great.
This was awesome!
Seriously love her, such a great player and an awesome story
Much Respect To You Hannah,
And thank you for showing us the Official, Prince approved, CORRECT way to play that 777-9311 drumbeat.
I've been trying to figure that one out since hearing it first in 1982,..way before the internet.
And then years later,..after seeing the wide array of the ( close ) to ( not even close ) interpretations from CZcams drum covers, it's nice to finally HEAR and SEE it performed correctly from someone who was an actual drummer for Prince. That settles it for me.
Again,..thank you for
finally demystifying this Legendary groove!
Two of my favorite drum parts in Prince’s music are Tambourine and Darling Nikki.
And he played them both.
Check out that immense double bass assault at the end of Nikki. That’s Prince, all 115 lbs of him, absolutely slaying double bass.
He was probably the single best musician/songwriter/entertainer who ever lived. I can’t think of anyone else who mastered all three of those disciplines so completely.
He was a good businessman and philanthropist, too… RIP
Richie Kotzen
Excellent subtle points!
