- This is my version of how to make Mrs Maisel's pleated ribbon cocktail hat from her holiday in the Catskills. I will go over a vintage millinery technique of making wire frame base hats, types of wire coverings, and of course how to pleat petersham ribbon. As usual I'll give you some variations to try. Just remember, this is my preferred method, there is no right or wrong way, just whatever works for you 😊

Oh my gosh didn't we all just adore Mrs Maisel! They seriously need to make another series. Thank you for sharing this video xx
Hello Hannah! I am so glad you've enjoyed this video 😊 I think the last one they made was series 4, and I think there will be a 5th and final season. 📺
I love this! I also appreciate how you provided insight into your experience with the alternative methods and reasoning for methods you chose. Very helpful!
How did you get into making hats? You ought to make a video of how you started and the things you've made.
I came here for the Ms. Maisel hat (which is lovely), but the nautilus hat gives me life! Glorious!
I love your videos! You are really talented. I hope the Royal ladies get to wear one. I so could see the Duchess of Edinburgh or Princess Beatrice in the nautilus hat!
Wow! This was amazing on all levels! Kudos to you @byilonamillinery and thank you for sharing
The lilac version is stunning.
Hi Karen, Thank you so much 😊
Love, Love, Love your hats!
I really enjoyed this tutorial, Ilona. I can imagine there’s a lot of work but it turned up in such a beautiful headpieces. I love watching The marvelous Mrs Maisel and the hats are incredible. Thank you so much Ilona x
Hello Angeles! I am so glad you've enjoyed this video! 😊
I have several vintage original hats that have complex velvet wired shapes - my fave one covered in a row of silk satin black bows intertwined with each other. I think i prefer these as they can be adjusted better for my odd shaped head. And theyre different and so classy. Great video.
Hi Roxann, these wire frame hats are amongst my favourite models. Your silk satin black bow one sounds lovely 😊
@@ByIlonaMillinery The wire in these old ones seems a LOT thicker and more resiliant to shaping that just milinery wire - in fact...it feels flat under the velvet cover.
Easy to understand and I can't wait to try it. Could you do a video on how to do pleated leaves??
Hello Stefanie, I am so glad you've enjoyed this video 😊 I haven't figured out pleated leaves yet, but I am sure I have a book somewhere that goes through it. Once I've figured it out I will consider making a video.
i am so enjoying all your vedios!!!
Very well explained, great job! I suspect Mrs. Maisel’s hat has a more substantial (buckram?) flat base, but your method works wonderfully. I love hats with a wire under structure!
Hello! I suspect you are right about a flat buckram base, but I only noticed that after I'd set my heart in this method! Plus, the buckram would have still had to be wired - so wayyy more work!!!
Your nautilus headpiece is absolutely divine 😍. Thank you for showing this technic and well done for your perseverance in making it. The end result is stunning 💜
Hello Emms, thank you! 😊
Awesome hat! You are well done!😍👒
Thank you 🤗
Thank you so very much! I am making gorgeous hats thanks to you. I love when you said This is my preferred method, there is no right or wrong way. What ever works for you...
it gave me the freedom I needed. Im making my own forms and am super excited! thank You from the bottom of my heart
I’m obsessed with this hat!! You have done an amazing job of showing how to do this technique. It’s on my “to learn” list this Spring. #favourite2023
Agatha Christie's Poirot series(from ITV) have some marvelous hats you could perhaps recreate. I really love your work and the way you teach.
hello! Thank you so much! 😊Yes, I have seen that series - the hats are gorgeous ❤️
Your mauve ribbon hat is absolutely stunning 😍. Thank you again for sharing your expertise. I love that you have given some indication as to the meterage of ribbon used along with time taken to achieve the look.
Hello Lynlee, I am so glad you enjoyed my video! Would it be helpful if in future videos if I gave approximate timings?
Are there any other Mrs Maisel Hat fashions you'd like me to attempt? Or even any other TV show / historical millinery fashion moments?
Love this. Thank you.
Grate tutorial, thank you
Meant great!!
Fab video!
lovely demo xxx
Hi Sara! Thank you 😊
Hats have been a lifelong love affair for me. I've only recently had the confidence to start wearing them and now, as I find it difficult to find hat styles I like, it seems that making them myself will be my next adventure. Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into making these videos. New subscriber here.

I am going to try to make one of these for a wedding I am going to will be using materials I have on hand. Hope it works out
Yes you have
OH my gosh, that nautilus hat is STUNNING!! I must check out that V&A exhibit. I would love to know what you would wear it with... I could see it with a lavender and cream boucle Chanel-style jacket and sheath combo trimmed in the same petersham. 😍(And the flame nails in the first part of the video are marvelous, too -- do you do them yourself?)
Hello Jennifer! Thank you so much! I would probably wear it with the 50's style fit and flair dress as it is light and airy. Or maybe a nice tailored suit - perhaps even in boucle as you mentioned! There are so many options! And thank you for noticing my nails, yes I do do them myself, I find it's a nice way for me to relax in the evenings 💅
👍👏👏👏👏👏👏❤😊
