- It’s a fan favorite type of fighter in fighting games: the grappler! With a close-ranger fighter who loves throws and falls in about every fighting game, there was a hefty pool of characters to choose from among the grapplers in the history of fighting games. So, who slams and jams the best? Let’s find out!

@@QuinnIsIn I play every kind of character. Rushdowns are bound to be frustrated by grapplers in the same way that grapplers are bound to be frustrated by zoners, although the gap between all 3 archetypes has been greatly decreased since the days of Street Fighter 2.
One of my personal favourite grapplers has to be Tina Armstrong from DOA, mostly because of how versatile she is with her throws. She can follow up combos with a command grab, a mid air throw or a ground throw depending on the situation. She even has easy to use chain grapples. I don't normally play grapplers in fighting games, but as far as grapplers go, Tina has a bit of everything and that's why she's my favourite fighter in DOA.

@@zacharyrodriguez4348 I actually trash La Mariposa players with Tina. Once you get her pattern down, countering her little 'dance' kicks are cake. And the wake up throw is easily trashed with a low throw.

Fun fact about Wolf Hawkfield: his character was used as a gimmick for IRL wrestler Jim Steele for a few years at All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW), to which I assume was a long stint of cross promotion but it was popular so they decided to keep up with it than just the first year. This does certainly reflect on how moves from other wrestlers associated with the promotion and the branched off Pro Wrestling NOAH promotion as some wrestlers from AJPW left to create that has had some notable moves used for Wolf in later Virtua Fighters

Grapplers are usually my favorite. Though Zangief has to be the favorite among them. Storyline and outside media always make him a literal wise man who just enjoys his plex game.

@@franciscoarzapalozapata4610 The phrase is meant to invoke two things. One, bad guys have origins. They don't start bad and sometimes that means they don't end bad. It's also meant to be a bit of a play on words. Ralph is the villain of a video game and yet he's a good guy inside.
On top of that, Zangief is viewed like that because of the Street Fighter lore. He's like Drago during the Rocky movies. Most fighters are American and that means to them he's a "bad guy" because a lot of the games are during the Cold War era

I'm still Hoping for a Video of "Jeet Kune Do" Users in Fighting Games due to the Fact that *Fei Long* will not make a Return in the Upcoming "Street Fighter 6" because of the Lee Family forbidding Capcom to use Bruce's Likeness.

Can we get an honorable mention to my boy Stun the insect( Bloody Roar 2 onward)? Not only was he a grappler with some heavy attacks( he'd ram you with his horn/ even face palm you to a wall) but his design& beast form was fantastic !!! Straight up modeled after Zx-Tole from Guyver!
I was really upset my bug boy wasn't mentioned at all.
I wish Guyver would get remade or something, I really miss that franchise.

Smash might not be considered a fighting game by a large group of gamers, but I enjoyed Incineroar's inclusion in Smash Ultimate. There were no grappler based characters in the previous games, and while some of them had strong throws, Incineroar finally gave us a character based around those throws and various other wrestling moves, even taking some inspiration from Zangief's spin attack.
Bowser counts as one too, I think. His normal grab is pretty good and he gets good reward off of it, but also, his side-B is like Incineroar's in that it's probably a top 5 command grab that can seal a stock pretty easily.
The lariat that incineroar does is just his special move from the games dark lariat it’s not a zangief reference

King will always be the coolest in my heart.
Goro Daimon is my favorite KOF grappler. His Cloud Tosser was the best anti-air throw in the series until recent games nerfed the hell out of it.
No honorable mention for Muscle Power, the original Hulk Hogan of fighting games?!

Goro in 98 is such a beast. He's so well equipped with good anti-air attacks (air grab move, his standing hard kick) and that ground grab you can do after a sweep kick. My personal favourite was Vice but Goro is close

24:10 Haggar was also on "Ring Of Destruction Slam Masters 2" which is his first fighting game debut, way befor Final Fight Revenge and MVC3

Zangief Is the Character that made me love fighting games so he Will Always have a special place in my heart. My favourite grappler at the moment Is Kouma Kishima from melty Blood,even though unlike most grapplers,he s normal sized and pretty fast

back in 1991 when street fighter 2 world warriors arcade came out. my very first choice was zangief. thought he would armor it all, only to get my ass kicked by cpu dhaslim. I knew right then it’s more to it then looks. I promised that I will learn the game and never waste my quarters easily ever again. my main then on was guile and ryu in SF2 WW but gief will always have a place in my heart.
Fun fact about King. His motion capture was done by Japanese pro wrestler and MMA fighter Minoru Suzuki.
One of my favourite grapplers is Ashlotte from Soul Calibur 4, because she is a very unexpected grappler,and unlike Kira from Arcana Hearts, (who also doesn’t look like she’d be a grappler) Ashlotte does all the fighting herself.
She had an interesting design but to me didn't have enough to draw me in due to just being a clone character.

I could be wrong. I mean I often see Tina fighting/wrestling while she wears her skimpy outfits. Tomboys supposedly have characteristics of guys, and Tina is more like a super model. What do you think?
@@BlazerK1914 I mean like I said, she has some qualities of a tomboy (tough, more of a power fighter than a lot of the other women, stereotypical manly fighting style of pro wrestling, she was a rock star in a ending) she even manhandles Zack once in 5’s story mode. But she also definitely owns her feminity, she puts her sex appeal to work, has no problem with wearing girly clothes. She’s just Tina.
Also, another point on her femininity, she was a model.
My favorite grapple type characters in arcade-style fighting games are King I and King II from Tekken and Wolf Hawkfield from Virtua Fighter.
Wolf is the only grappler i've EVER mained in a fighting game, i usually don't like the archetype but something about Wolf has always been so fun to me, his moveset is great. He has such a vast array of throws it's crazy. Great list!
King is a monster. He and Jin are my mains in Tekken.

I always played grapplers in Street Fighter. Zangief, T. Hawk, and Hugo.

I personally like Beowulf in Skullgirls a lot more than Cerabella. He just has a more fun personality and him just being a wrestling head is just so damn cool!
Obvious number 1 is actually not so obvious. I was actually debating between King and Geif as one and two.
Two words. Tina Armstrong. Dead or Alive. Her grappling moves are insane. I love wasting meta Ninja players with Tina while piledriving them through the arena. Never gets old.

KOF series has the most prominent grapplers in fighting games. There's Clark, Daimon, Shermie, Dolores, Tizoc/Dinosaur/Hinako
specially Clark in KOF 2002, his sm/dm/sdm/hsdm are all Grappling and all other moves are normals/counters(CD) that should be in top 1

Great list, MrTopTenList! Believe it or not, I didn’t even know Astaroth from Soul Calibur was a grappler! Like you said, its probably because he’s in a weapon themed fighting game, so you never would have guessed that it has one. XD
If they ever remake darkstalkers or continue the series and adult Emily will be so cool like a faster Victor similar moveset with electric abilities
Clark is also a cool grappler. Snk grapplers are always cool.
Some really cool grapplers in other games I like are Machamp from Pokkén Tournament and Rook from Fantasy Strike.
Both are very clearly inspired by Zangief, though Machamp also learned a ton from King (Pokkén being developed by Bandai Namco like Tekken, there's a ton of similar moves).
Shy also suggested Pikachu Libre when I was working on the video and I was like "that's so good!" Pokken's got some good grapplers.
If you like wrestling, Wolf from Virtua Fighter arguably the best there is. Criminally underated authentic animations. I was in shock when I first saw this guy in VF6....which needs a follow up game by the way!

My favorite is Shermie from KoF. Grapplers are usually known for being big hulking tanks that do tons of damage, but Shermie is relatively fast and light, so she feels fun to play.
Nice comment. When I think of it, I can imagine a trio of female grapplers could be a great custom KOF team. Shermie, Angel, and Blue Mary. Would you agree?

Someone from Capcom in a similar caliber with Haggar (usually in a beat'em up series, but had a fighting game spin-off once) worth mentioning would be Toyotomi Hideyoshi from the Sengoku Basara series. Kind of a standard grappler in the fighting game spin-off, but his grappling style is 'grapple some hapless enemy and then use them as a bludgeon'. Pretty innovative, even including some traditional grappling throws, including even a spinning piledriver like Zangief.
All great picks! As an avid lover of the grapplers, this was an exciting list for me.
The only one I would switch, is Bane being my top pick in the Injustice games over Grundy. I enjoy his moveset and character more.
Really disliked King... One too many times being killed from 100 to 0 in one constant grab chain.

Great list but king should have been #1 because he took grappling to the next level pulling off the rolling death cradle in a match is a God like feat that's unmatched
If you think that is god like.. watch a few MvC2 matches with magneto being used to rush down

A Grappler Character is not Easy to play as in Fighting Games, but with a little Trial and Error if given the Right Practice to fully Mastered it, they can be one of the most Dangerous OP Fighters in the Ring.

But I'm still a Casual towards other Grapplers like from other Series like Zangief and R. Mika in "Street Fighter" and every Grappler in the "King of Fighters" series.

My 2 favorite grapplers are Venessa from Virtua Fighter and Raiden from SNK games.
Grapplers are not as cheap as most people think, lot of good reads and general game knowledge are necessary to be a good one.
Even though there have been two Kings, the second King is larger. King Classic was 6'3" while King II is either 6'6" or 6'7". Either way, they're a couple of big Luchadores.

i have to say, for the sf series, i would have picked hugo, i feel like he brought just more on the table in terms of what we are now used from a fleshed out grappler , and in addition he is based on André the Giant wich is dope af. personally Alex is my favorite sf character overall, but hugo is more of a classic grappler while Alex is kinda similar to blue Mary a mobility/rushdown grappler imo

Interesting picks here, most of them not what I expected... Mike Haggar probably should have been a numbered inclusion though, as he's more of grappler than like half of these characters, and was playable Final Fight games AND Slam Masters long before he appeared in MvC3.

For some reason i loved Abel in Street Fighter 4. Like Blue Mary he was more of a combo rushdown grappler but his throws, cyclone neckbreakers and strong grappling moves made him a favourite for me to play.

I'm surprised you named Tina as the honorable mention for DOA when there are Bass and Leon that fit the archetype better same with mah boi Bayman but he's more of a counter.
Bayman's grabs are brutal. He's actually a refreshing change from grapplers putting on a show, given how his fighting style is based on Sambo, practiced by Russian commandos. He definitely should have been an honorable mention if not featured on the list!
@@RoadKamelot2nd Bayman is good but as stated he's more of a counter player. Go aggressive with Tina's throws and she'll wax Bayman all day. Fake a combo with 2 hits wait for the counter and throw. Toast or wait for his bait combo and when he throws, counter with a faster throw. His mix-up game is intense and his vortex is deadly but Tina can throw out fast counter throws that turn the tide, same with Bass, Tina has fast counter throws and good combo mix-ups to break rhythm and get control back on your side. Tina is REALLY strong.
From the KOF franchise Clark isn't considered as strictly a grappler but Goro is
