    I LOVE these Koh-i-noor Tri-tones, and have honestly used them to draw people portraits with great success. Everyone has their personal preferences and style, I guess, but I love their vibrancy, and the more you use them you quickly adapt to that unpredictability you mention. I've done more traditional/realistic people portraits, and more stylized pet drawings with them. The great thing about the 23 pack for me is it's limitations -- I feel overwhelmed by having dozens of choices of pinks for skin tone with, say, Prismacolors, but with the Tri-Tones, I can make a nice warm skin tone with just a few pencils and no pinks and it really works! Also, they lay down nice & rich, not waxy like Prismas. There's no way I'd go back to Prismacolors now after using these.

    i think it would be great for landscape sketching! you can easily add variation and depth without carrying too many pencils around! and I see the 12 set has some very good greens and earth tones too.

      Thanks, Yolanda. That's a great idea. I don't have this pencil set, but I have tri-colore Crayola crayons. And you are so right, they work well in landscapes !

    These pencils are fabulous and worth every penny! It's so easy to make beautiful blends layering more than one tri-tone.

    I have the set of 24 that I got from amazon for about $23 a few months ago... some color blends are better than others... I used them for coloring mandalas as well as stamped images. think textures: woodgrain, bird houses, grass, leaves, flowers... although some of the color combinations seemed odd to me at first once they're blended they can be quite stunning.

  • @alejandrarodriguez2508
    @alejandrarodriguez2508 Před 8 lety +20

    I'm not sure what their original purpose were but I would use these for Van Gogh style/post impressionistic pieces. I'm sure you'll find use for them in a later video :)

  • @mooreartbylucy
    @mooreartbylucy Před 8 lety +7

    I bought some and use them, mostly because I love layering color (especially non-local color) to create the images of highlights and shadows. Also, I am using them to do work on eyes, and fur which as a very mottled look without having to go over everything so many times. Granted I don't have control over the combinations, but the combinations are quite realistic when they stack. They could be easily be colors I would pick for myself when using them.
    No, I don't see them being used by a highly specific colored pencil artist who likes pure saturated colors, but for someone who uses lots of layers of colors, someone who wants to create interest and texture, or for someone who works with mottled colors (such as textures on clothing, fur, etc.) they work wonderfully.

  • @mikepolo2887
    @mikepolo2887 Před 2 lety +2

    I think this set is nice for semi-realistic landscape sketching: the color jitter that these pencils create feels very realistic without much effort.

  • @BookwormDragon1
    @BookwormDragon1 Před 8 lety +7

    I love the Kohinoor Magic FX set, which has 5 fat pencils. The trick to using these, BTW, is to use them overhand (on the side) and roll the pencil a little bit every few strokes. ☺ Great for backgrounds.

  • @catherinebaril7396
    @catherinebaril7396 Před 8 lety +5

    they can definetly give more dimension to coloring. I often layer shades of colors in areas that would be too plain otherwise. they would probably give you a similiar effect and be a very great addition to your art supplies actually!

  • @milenabdesign
    @milenabdesign Před 7 lety +2

    Lynne Chapman does some gorgeous sketches with those multicolor pencils, the randomness of the colors make for some really cool effects. The thing is you have to give up color control.

  • @MiniBooksGalore
    @MiniBooksGalore Před 8 lety +4

    I have the set of 24 and like them. I find they are best for coloring when you hold the pencil in one position and color in little circles. Then you can see the way they blend better. I also have the fatter Hardmuth Magic set and those would be better for the drawing as the leads are larger and the colors stay separated better. Once you get the hang of using them they are fun but even with the set of 24 because of the blends some of the pencils are very close in color.

  • @makewithblake
    @makewithblake Před 8 lety +6

    I use brown for coloring wooden materials, green for leaves, blue for the sky, red with orange for flowers, yellow for backgrounds .. Try the blender it's amazing especially with the brown one you will think it's a real wood

  • @Patcrochets
    @Patcrochets Před 8 lety +2

    Thanks Lindsay, I have tri colored crayons and seldom use them. When I do it is always on landscape type coloring pages. I am not sure I would use these either, which is sad because the idea is intriguing. I guess I just don't have the inventive mind that this product was made for. Looking forward to all the comments. I did like the lettering idea though especially after seeing the color block swatches. Would make for an interesting texture.

  • @Senghe
    @Senghe Před 8 lety +3

    I love Koh-I-Noor's products, but I've never really fancied these to be honest. The randomness would drive me mad as an adult, but I'd have loved them as a child. The Polycolor and Mondeluz are fabulous, though. and the Giaconda pastel pencils. Especially for the price as they are often really cheap for the quality.

  • @lisamr40
    @lisamr40 Před 8 lety +2

    I've been eyeing up these pencils for months! Lol it's the price that stops me! I'd rather spend that money on a great quality colored pencil. I noticed that brand does or doesn't include certain colors that are needed in their 12 packs. Thanks for showing these! Much appreciated!

  • @tessareeddesigns1355
    @tessareeddesigns1355 Před 8 lety +1

    My best guess for these would be that they would be used for nature or landscape inspired drawings. It seems like there are a lot of earth tones in the set. And the package has that castle landscape on the front.

  • @cindymatthewsarrowdalearts6449

    Don't have much to say about the pencils - i've never been fan of tri-colored pens and/or pencils/crayons, etc. i like to make those choices myself! But, that horse, if you spend a lot of time with pre-school girls (as I happen to do - my sister has granddaughters who are 1.5, 3 and 4 - would be 'Awesome!' :)

    I enjoy these pencils packed in my to go pencil bag/case. I use them for quick sketches and the yellows and greens allow me to put nice areas of colors with nice variable colors without changing pencils or carrying loads of colors around with me. The larger set does have more choices and even a couple of Red combo's you were talking about! My nieces like them too because they are Fun! Easy to get a lot of color down without working so hard for it and blending them kinda automatically! I hope you give them another try, But since it has been a while maybe you have already passed them on to another artist? I believe the larger set is worth it, but then again I like them!

    Yes, I got your point. I have something similar made in Brazil, and it just looks fun but isn´t that much. There´s a line of products by KohINor that are jumbo pencils (in Brazil it is Magic Jumbo, I guess), with a bigger lead, it might be a little better but it´s too expensive for us (I guess it´s about 25-30 dollars, but it´s too much for us). If try happen to try it, I´ll tell you.

    Hi Lindsay,I had to pause the video just as it started to rush to Amazon.co.uk to see if these are available this side of the pond. OMG...the 24 set is almost 50GBP and the 12 set is almost 36GBP. All the range of pencils are expensive though and if I were desperate to have them I think it would be the larger set as they would work out cheaper per pencil. Back to the video now to see what wonders you can do with them.Bejay x

    • @Senghe
      @Senghe Před 8 lety +2

      +Bejay Roles You can get them a lot cheaper in the swirly livery and there's a short set of 12 with some purples in on Amazon for less than half of those prices. Though I've got to say, they do nothing for me personally as I'm a control freak and the random nature makes me feel icky just looking at it - he-he!

I've been using their Polycolor colored pencils (the set of 24 to try them out) and I'm pretty happy with them, so I'm considering going back for a bigger set. They're cheaper than for example Derwents, so I'm wondering if the quality is comparable.
