- Crazy Turbulence After Take Off | Student Pilot | Full Audio
A short clip from an upcoming video on bad weather flying. With gusty 30kt winds and severe turbulence forecast, this was one flying lesson I'll never forget! After takeoff, the turbulence builds gradually and then the real fun begins - we start hitting mountain waves on downwind.
You can out the complete flight here: • RECREATIONAL PILOT CER...
What's the most turbulent conditions you've been flying in?
ABOUT ME:
I'm a student pilot learning to fly in my spare time. I originally received 30 hours of flying instruction 17 years ago and now I'm back in the cockpit and learning how to fly all over again.
Currently flying out of Wollongong (YWOL), Australia in light sport aircraft such as the Jabiru and Pipestrel alpha with Fly Illawarra:

Sheesh first video that showed actual *crazy* turbulence I’ve ever seen!
That's why I posted it... couldn't find any good videos myself either of turbulence
@@RomeoJulietWhiskey are you still flying?
@@cjeremie Been studying for a new career so not much money at the moment. Hoping to go for a fly later this year though. I've pre-ordered MSFS2020 so I can brush up on my flying skills
Haven't for a while...but planning to do some more flights next year
Reminds me of my lesson today! My instructor took the controls and had me do breathing exercises to relax! Then handed them back over and told me not to worry I was doing great. Your instructor makes all the difference!
Nick Danger Haha... Good to experience those conditions with an instructor first though!
@@RomeoJulietWhiskey Flew through something similar yesterday out of Monterey, CA. I had to call it a day after my second touch-and-go. Your instructor definitely makes a difference.
@@calistyle831ify very reassuring having the instructor in the passenger seat. Btw, I just flew into Monterey in MSFS the other day. Looks like a nice place!
Hats off to that instructor! Very calm and lighthearted. Turbulence scares the crap out of me, but he was smooth through the bumpiest of bumps!
Didn't bother him at all!
His hat was actually on 😏
Always nice when you're instructor looks cool and calm!
It's reasurring that's for sure. I was taking plenty of sideways glances checking to see if he was concerned or not. I think he was enjoying himself...lol.
That is simply his good attitude to difficulties in flight. Nice habits of a real fighter!
@@RomeoJulietWhiskey He was probably loving you get shocked!
@@scrappy673 Yeah, I think he enjoyed this one!
@@RomeoJulietWhiskey that's really good teacher for You @Romeo
The instructor's Aussie accent is reassuring.
Lol :-)
Except for when he calls you a muppet for not following his instruction 🤣
Yup, a lot of them sound like that in Australia!
Clicked the video expecting to see a crazy turbulence. Didn't get disappointed.
Juan Bonnett glad you liked the video!
you are a fucking idiot.
@@RomeoJulietWhiskey hey question, what is the gust limit in your flight school and what country is it in..? I live in Costa Rica, we are surrounding by mountains which makes the wind flow channel through the valley I live in, and our flight school has strong winds all year around, our limits of wind is 20 gusting 30, although the piper I fly could still be flown with 35 kts according to POH, good job controlling the bird too!
@@jafetcastillo7251 Hey mate, as far as I know there is no gust limit. It comes down to common sense really.
@@jafetcastillo7251 Usually Bruce (My current instructor and same instructor in this video) will go based off the max gust of the J230, around 40kts at the most with a push, during my flight training so far we've both agreed at points to go a few over and make a rapid climb to around 5,500ft and that gets us outta the rodeo below. Then we throw each other to the test on the best landing with the most difficulty.
Don't underestimate the power of the wind! I'll never forget flying in extremely gusty wind (by accident) in a piper pa28 and hearing the stall horn periodically in cruise flight!!
I love how the plane is rolling like crazy and your just so chill
Very glade to see such calm and informative instructor pilot.
Wish I had this guy sitting next to me when turbulence strikes on my flights!
His names Bruce, He's my instructor right now here in 2018, He's a very good instructor with a good heart and good sense of humour.
@@scrappy673 nice to have him mate.
"Where am I? What am I doing?" Hahaha love it 👍🏼
I love how I've got the death grip on the yoke whilst the instructor is smiling at me...I'm pretty sure he is enjoying it more than me
you are throw around like Hell over there ...
I can feel rhe turbulence from my 6" screen.
A calm instructor goes such a long way in situations like that! Thanks for sharing!
3:30 "do a barrel roll!"
Didn't think of that!
And I complain about the chop here in Texas. That's crazy, man. You had an awesome instructor. I've watched a few of your videos, I think my favorite line from him is in your landing video where he's like "now, what are we doing over here? look outside!" I'd love to fly with that dude.
That one made me laugh too
Love the instructor! Respect!
He makes for a great instructor. Calm and easy going.
Perhaps the only video on youtube titled crazy something and indeed is crazy :D
Wow. Crazy is right. Both of you were calm and collected the whole way.
No way It'd go up in 30kt winds. That's nuts.
Watching this to comfort me after a very windy hour trip to bring the boss's plane back
JEEEZ! Thumbs up to you bro! Seated here 0ft AGL, I was still sweating!!!
TGI haha... thanks man!
TGI: i don't know what AGL means but i can grasp the gist of what you are saying and fully agree.
AGL = Above Ground Level
That was crazy 😲
Well done 👍🏻
Reminds me of being a passenger in a touring motorglider for the first time when i was 6. Kept going up 100ft and down 100ft for a good half an hour. After that never had any turbulence that impresed me. And learned to really tighten the belts properly. It has something fun to it.
Awesome video. Was just in a Piper today (as a passenger) flying over the Santa Cruz mountains south of SF and we hit some crazy turbulence. Got pretty freaked out but I still love flying
Great instructor!
Damn I can relate. My first flight lesson in a Piper PA28, super hot clear sunny day in London, the winds were just like in this video. Stall horn every 2 or 3 seconds. Very uncomfortable but didn't put me off pursuing my PPL
Not trying to learn to fly, but was genuinely scared of long distance flights, pretty ironic seeing i'm an aerospace engineering student. So I decided to search how the experts handle the turbulence, and I must say this helped greatly for me overcoming my fear! Great stuff!
Glad I could help!
Old post, but I relate to what you are saying... I was on a flight a few days ago and we hit some moderate turbulence, the "flights attendants please secure the aircraft and take your jump seats" kind of turbulence. That big jet was bouncing and wobbling! While it was happening, I paid 10 bucks for internet and started reading as much as I could about the physics of turbulence and what pilots say about it! 😂
Great Instructor, reminds me to my days when having the lessons. I used to have a similar Instructor, very calm an funny but experienced with this special teaching behavior.. Great 😊
Great stuff. Reminds me of my early flight training at Bartow, Florida. We spent a hour doing touch and go in the circuit in turbalance. Great experienced. ATC loved to hear the squeal in my voice as my head made contact with the roof of the cockpit. Would never been allowed that experience in UK. Thanks for sharing your experience.
GBchannel glad you liked it. Great experience indeed.
Weirdest controls
Robert facts 😂😂😂
Seems like a very good instructor. You were definitely getting rocked around.
Both these pilots are pretty calm. I’d be freaking out.
nice video! kept ya busy!
Love it man. Super cool instructor.
Thanks mate. Yeah, Bruce is a great instructor. Makes a big difference to the whole flying training experience
that looks fun good job guys I love it
And yet not even a skidmark! Well done!
Very nice. Way to keep your cool.
This was NOT clickbait. Great instructor!
Great video! And exactly what you want in a flight instructor. Nice to see the usual student questions popping up as well. How far have you progressed in your flying at this stage?
Wayne Farrell thanks mate. Still working on my cross country endorsement.
Insane !!
Tipping my hat to the instructor. Calm and cool.
love to see Wollongong
2:45 instructor nearly ended up in your lap.
You both stayed remarkably calm for all of that.
Christopher Carstens Haha...instructor was calm, I can guarantee you I wasn't...slightly terrified more like it. It was mentioned CH worse than what the video portrays!! good learning experience though.
Nice job!
Thats great buddy some choppy flight right there! liked the vid keep up the good work and wish you many landings
;-)
AviationDreams Netherlands Thanks mate!
That's not too bad (I've seen worse). Always remember that takeoff is optional but landing is mandatory.
Yep...good advice
The teacher looks so relaxed. More than my father when he was teachinf me how to drive a car lol
Worst I've had as a pilot was hitting my head on the ceiling, and also hitting max aileron input but still needing more (not fun to run out). 3:22 was getting pretty close to that
What kind of yoke is that? I don't think I've ever seen one in the center
Turbulence is all part of the fun and experience! My instructor and I have learned to just joke around laugh it off and have fun hell last time we got a good gust and bump we joked that it was like a rollercoaster! 🤣
It's good to do these things during training with an instructor. When it happens to you on your own, you know it's still safe. Stress goes up but at least you won't panic remembering how calm your FI was at the time.
jibeneyto Exactly my reasoning for flying that day
Man you guys were being jostled around like clothes in a laundry machine. I don’t think I’ve experienced turbulence like that in any of my lessons yet
Crickey. I've seen less turbulence in washing machines. That dude kept cool as the other side of the pillow, through the whole thing!
Haha...it was pretty rough that day
I'd class that as light rotor turbulence coming off the mountains to the west. I never heard of "crazy" turbulence but it takes moderate to lift you off the seat and heavy causes rolling up to 60° each way.
Amazing video man. I can tell that feeling of yours. I would tell the same. What am I doing, where was I haha. Also glad you had your instructor on board who is so calm and reassuring. I remember flying solo in these conditions, heading to the practice area without practicing stalls, steep turns and forced approaches. Always good when you have a cfi on board with you. Hope you get back to flying soon and me too:) Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
That's exactly why I went up in those conditions. I wanted to experience that with an instructor rather than solo. Would have been terrifying solo as an inexperienced pilot
@@RomeoJulietWhiskey absolutely my friend, agreed! But as a part of the training we need to go solo and sometimes weather changes rapidly and turbulence sometimes can't be predicted. Either way it's quite terrifying. Practice might make us more used to it:) thanks
top instructor
Que condiciones atmosfericas causan la turbulebcia o vientos cruzados
Can't beat a cool,calm instructor.
Makes a massive difference
scary! amazing controls you have
Hasan Nizamani yeah.. they are a bit different but very comfortable
What a great instructor.
Agreed...Bruce is great. Highly recommended.
Nice job man, yeah I wouldn't be looking to fight through that, nice and easy through it and just ride those waves
megatop412 thanks mate...yeah flying through turbulence is a skill I'm just beginning to learn and understand
The max allowable crosswind in a Jabiru is 15kts. Why did your instructor take you out when the winds were 30KTS?! Very dangerous flying the aircraft well outside its design limits.
I remember the west wind coming over the top of that escarpment to the west of Wollongong causing a bit of turbulence. I also remember training for my helicopter commercial in 50 knot winds landing and departing Darling Harbour (Sydney) over that freeway to the south when there was a helipad there. But helicopters are better in turbulence than similar-sized fixed wing due to the rotor disc being bigger than wings. Fast forward a few years to flying in Papua New Guinea in the Nineties and flying through thunderstorms without weather radar in East New Britain around Jaquinot Bay and Pomio to Hoskins Airport. That's turbulence. I did that for several months. I don't know how now looking back.
I would have puked! Love the instructor,.......calm, cool and collected.
I would have too if I wasn't so busy just trying to control the plane
Very good
Woof, not a fun day but a practical one of training.
Great learning experience. I would have been freaking out if I was up there solo.
I finally understand the dynamics of the rudder. It doesn't really change the direction so much as change the angle of the nose - maintaining the airflow over the wing for flight. It makes a lot of sense with these really difficult landings when the planes have to crab onto the runway almost side-ways.
SpaXpert Just Here you should check my first flight. The instructor talks about rudder usage, in particular how to maintain co-ordinate flight without referencing the 'ball' and keeping head out of the cockpit. really informative and info I've never come across anywhere else.
Thanks. That should be a good one. Gonna go find it now! Thanks for your quick response!
SpaXpert You do that by feeling any lateral forces in your seat and body. Fly a tandem tailwheel from the rear seat to really get exaggerated effects.
Those YWOL winter westerly's alway bring the mountain waves.
Blair Dutney yep...good times!
Liking this, whenever you see "Crazy turbulence" videos usually it's bugger all... But this wasn't disappointing. The Sportstar got sold just recently so I had to stick to the Jabiru from now. My god it was a rough one. Bruce and I got shoved like this video shows!
Yeah its a little scary up in those conditions. Takes a while to get comfortable flying in that sort of weather.
@@RomeoJulietWhiskey Your not wrong, the Westerly winds mate... Those mountains ain't playing games. I haven't been up recently cause of finance. Im probably gonna end up doing what happened with you, Few lessons in teen/young adult years. And then when I got a better job go up alot like this.
2:47 😱😱
Flying in Phoenix with a Archer was a blast. One hand on the yoke, the other on the ceiling to hold yourself in the seat.
Haha...I bet that was fun
@@RomeoJulietWhiskey My favorite part was being aimed at a "mountain" about 500 ft to 1000 ft below the top with 100fpm climb. You get close then you hit 1500fpm and rocket right over it. Very odd sensation.
The instructor is so calm and cool.
Yeah..he's a good one.
Then Aussies hahaha you could be falling out the sky and he will look at you and be like ‘ah mate you’ll be alright’ 😂😂😂 and instantly you’ll be alright.
Not clickbait.Noice.
Good job
So cool! I wouldnt be able to stay as calm as you did, did you eventually get into smoother skies??
Yeah mate, it got a little smoother when we went over the sea away from the mountains
If you can fly in these conditions you can fly everywhere! Kudos!
Thanks man.... Definitely gives you confidence when facing these conditions solo
When I was training for my CPL years ago me and my instructor got battered . With my seatbelt on my head it the top of the cabin ceiling . We hit a thermal bubble in central Florida on a hot day. This looks just like that, thermals
Hey there's an old P2 Neptune. Haven't seen one for ages.
I'm flying a sim in turbulent condition. Man its hard. Always suddenly losing lift in left or right wing when I tried to fight it. And bank angle should be much less lean than usual. Should ride it instead of fighting it.
Interesting advice, stay light on controls in turbulence. I heard the opposite - in turbulence, be firmer on the controls.
I think the tendency for inexperience pilots is to overreact.
Lol...looks like the death grip on the controls...i remember those days. WEEEE!!!!!
Pilot and instructor contributed 2 pairs, 4 Balls total of male cantelope sized, forged from pure titanium, added to extra ballast and kept the plane nice and stable during turbulent windy conditions 🤣
Went up not too long ago, had similar wind to this... I'm freaking da f*ck out and Bruce is in the seat arms crossed... "She'll be right!".
Hahaha.. it's a bit different being there than just watching a video. Well done!
Holy crap you were thrown all around there
It was pretty rough! Wait to you see the landings! Should have the full video of this lesson coming out soon.
cool
That was fun to watch!! LOL
I wish I could say the same thing about the flight!
It was different from the videos i usually watch ! LOL
nice video,i am a new pilot and turbulence is something that really concerns me. can you share some tips (or your aswesome instructors tips ) how to copy with that in general?
Sorry for the late reply. Going up with an instructor like I did and getting experience is the best to I can give you
I'm glad I came here.
All that struggle will be all for the better experience in being a pilot :)
The instructer is loving it His smile at 3mins says it all.
Haha...he's definitely having a better time than me
@@RomeoJulietWhiskey i have my first flying lesson in a few weeks cant wait. Well done by the way.
What aircraft is this? Quite different instrumentation to when I learned in the Eighties. Great :-)
Australian made Jabiru
@@RomeoJulietWhiskey Thanks. That was quick. Cheers.
Encountered turbs like those on one of my PPL solo cross countries. Wish I would have had a CFI in the right seat at the time!
Sounds like you made it back in one piece! I would have been anxious up there on a solo PPL if I hadn't experienced those conditions before
Instruktur look calm and cool....
haha that looked like a hand full at some stages. good fun!
As you could probably tell, part of me was loving it and the other part was terrified!
+Romeo Juliet Whiskey yeah definitely. Bruce found it hilarious.
Hey! I'm learning to fly too. Can you make a video on how you have atc audio on your videos?
Great idea - I'll try and do a short video on that this weekend.
what model aircraft is this ? Its years since I had my plane but that cockpit looks very awkward . Right hand on the yoke and reaching over with the left hand for switches etc , shit you are all crossed up in the cabin let alone the aircraft being crossed up. Looks a pretty dumb design to me
It's a Jabiru Australian made plane. I get what you saying but it's more intuitive than what it oooks
What type of airplane were you flying in this clip?
I hope my instructor is like this XD
That was one heck of a turbulent flight- especially that last gust that picked up your wing. I just did a flight from Toronto to Santa Fe; check out my vid on turbulence!
