- Learning to Fly - BAD LANDINGS | Student Pilot
Learning to fly and feeling disheartened by watching everyone else's nice landings? This video shows the reality of flight school ... lots of bad landings!
ABOUT ROMEO JULIET WHISKEY:
I'm a student pilot learning to fly in my spare time. I originally received 30 hours of flying instruction 17 years ago and now I'm back in the cockpit and learning how to fly all over again.
Currently flying out of Wollongong (YWOL), Australia in light sport aircraft such as the Jabiru and Pipestrel alpha with Fly Illawarra:

Recreation Aviation Australia: www.raa.asn.au/
Jabiru aircraft: jabiru.net.au/
Love how you sir posting your mistakes and how you learnt from it, while everyone else is selecting the best clip to post. Everyone has to start at some point, thanks for making me feel better from the hard landings of my own :D And that's a very good instructor indeed.
Thanks mate. I must admit after a million people have seen my bad landings, I am tempted to do a good landings vid!
Absolutely, your instructor’s demeanor is flawless, absolute pro.
@@kristopher850 Couldn't agree more. I have had instructors in the past who would get angry at you for making a mistake while LEARNING to fly. Do they sometimes forget the reason the student is learning is because they don't know how to fly perfect and that errors should be expected and corrected in a low stress learning environment. Credit to the instructor I am envious of Romeo Juliet Whiskey I wish I had that instructor.
Cause the instructor doesn’t want to die
Appreciate your video here. Helps me to get 1 step closer to flying
how the hell is an airplane instructor more chill than my dad teaching me how to drive while I'm going 15 mph.
PUSH THE BRAKE
"Brake. BRAKE YOU USLESS CUNT." "Dad we're 200 yards from the junction." That's how I remember it xDD
Joshua Akester 😂😂🤣 UK dads be like
Ohana means family, family means don't teach each other how to fucking drive!
lolll same
man you have a great instructor!
Was going to say the same thing....he IS good.
kindersley weather is nice to see if 7 the same time as a result
Soaringcentra
He literally so chill LOL
Agreed
Marvellous instructor. His calming voice while giving tips and his patience is fantastic!
💯
Okay, I am a student pilot who is just starting to solo and I can't even tell you how much this video has encouraged me. I am seeing definite Improvement on my Landings, have had some really good ones, and I've had a few that I certainly wouldn't write home about. It is helpful to see other people botching the heck out of it and still walking away safely, and getting better all the time. Thank you so much!
Glad to hear it could help.
I love the instructor! “And what are we doing over here?” “Look outside, look outside, look outside.”😂😂😂😂😂
Carter Kamphuis what we're NOT trying to do is put the nose on the ground
Houston we got a problem
I made a hard landing once. As soon as we stopped the instructor, opened the window, looked down and said, "Ok, good. We still have landing gear."
The instructor is a dream!
*Pilot lands*
Pilot drives of the runway* xD
Your instructor is so chill about it and isn't stressing you when you're making these mistakes! That's a great CFI right there :)
Yeah Bruce is great. As long as its safe, having an instructor that allows you to make mistakes is the best way to learn.
A CFI has to let the student go as far as possible but he can still save it if needed.
Bruce B Wow ...that's cutting it close!
GSOaviator I swear that was my first thought too after watching the first two landings, great CFI indeed!
GSOaviator instructors have some fucking balls.
I actually panicked when you were approaching the ground at 1:45.
That instructor has balls of steel.
In small aeroplane you have to have a steep descend like youre pointing the nose at the numbers on the runway. It felt very strange when I first had to do it - like you’re dropping like a brick is what it feels like
Being a commercial A340 Pilot, I can tell that it’s incredibly important to not panic and stay calm in these situations and it’s amazing how the instructor didn’t let any of your mistakes discourage you. Great to see that the Flight Training Sessions have improved quite a lot!
Intense Productions Inc. Thanks for your feedback. The instructor did a great job...and it makes such a difference having a good instructor in the long run
If you fly a 340 then I am Peter North !
@@mango7862 Hey Peter!
I'm a pilot for a airline, want to say your instructor is really good and you doing really well, pilots have to remain calm in every situation, goodluck with the rest of your training.
mark radiouk thanks mate.... good to get feedback from people in the industry
Mark Vlogs Daily Jesus, landing an airliner is nowhere close to landing a cessna, I mean is it really that hard to land one or is it just a myth ??
J Malone you're acting like its impossible for an actual airline pilot to comment on a video.. Sad.
J Malone Ironic.
Lies I just checked ur utube and all u do are simulators on ur tablet and ur mavic drone and have nothing to do with actual planes
“What are we doing over here” 😂 What a great CFI. So calm and so patient. Keep up the good work.
I guess what every flight instructor wonders while sipping his coffee in the morning is will he have dinner with his family that evening.
Instructor is the best!! He makes nothing an issue!!
Agreed
Almost died = No problems m8. Cheers, you'll get it next time.
yeah. that's the attitude i need, right there.
lol. this instructuctor is fedup of life
Almost died = didn’t die.
@rihardo123 yeah like ultra death
CFI life lmao
Good reminder for me is that most people only post the good landings on social media. You sir are a real one posting your learning process! Thanks for this video!
“Now let’s go and find some brakes … “ Excellent calm attitude!
your flight instructor is totally relaxed because he's seen at lot worse.
So many likes but no comments
@@Arnavshahmr just pure agreement
I bet ATCs get a kick out of watching the new guys attempt landings, probably all gather at the window.
orbas88 g
I'm a pro pilot and his landings don't look much worse than many of mine when conditions are poor (direct 30kt crosswinds, low level wind shear, variable winds) just keep rocking it and try to develop a feel for what that particular aircraft requires as far as correction is concerned. If not comfortable go around. If second guessing a bounce go around.
Carl Engel - How do you become a pilot? Like every step?
The requirements are listed in the Federal Aviation Regulations, which can be found on the FAA's website. Part 61 is a good place to start reading.
Wollongong doesn't have an ATC, We just state intentions. But we do have an ATIS and AWIS. As well as a computer system that replies with "Wollongong Traffic" after each transmission, However, if the transmission happens every 30 seconds let's say. A few beeps come your way meaning your starting to overuse the radio.
That’s still better than my Infinite Flight landings.
Infinite flight tries to hard to be realistic it goes beyond realism and just ends up being unrealistic again.
Ángel López EXACTLY, ITS A GAME
Saem
Ángel López actually you need to get out of CZcams now
I'm playing right now. Have a long flight plan on autopilot. Just crashed into Mountains on the last one...forgot to set my altitude higher than the mountain tops :/
The student is literally rolling over the left edge of the runway just about to have an excursion and how chill the instructor is. Respect.
This instructor is a MASTER !! He lets the student experiences mistakes to learn from. It's a great instructor. Very confident. Trusting you, knowing his limits, yours and the limits of the plane and of the situation perfectly !
Any student with an instructor like this will learn so much in a small period of time in safety margins.
THIS IS HOW GREAT PILOTING SKILLS ARE LEARNED !!! THE BEST WAY !
bonbondesel Couldn't agree more
bonbondesel Even till this day now that im flyig with him he completely habded me controls on my first circuit lesson for a touch and go, feet off and all I look at him and he had his eyes shut like he wasnt there and it creeped me out lol. But either way he is really good with alot of things around the airport as well, He knows some of the pilots by name so he sits there and is all, Hey mike you can go around us and take off (Cause we were taking our time on run up) so kind, Patient yet safe to fly with I would not give him up for an instructor ever,
Definitely, I noticed the same thing
Ryanair: Such a good pilot! I don't see anything bad about this video.
Lmao 😂
lol
After seeing this they offered to pay for the rest of his training and gave him a job
😂😂😂
Lol
I'm a student pilot and all I have to say is thanks homie you made me feel better about my landings
President Nixon’s pilot told me he once crash-landed a plane of which there was nothing left when he was first learning how to fly. So...don’t feel bad at all.
Never forget a good landing is a landing you can walk away from ;)
Alpha A better landing is when you can use the aircraft again
that is great landing:)
Alpha 30sec repair times
Thanks kawolski
Alpha ...mmmmm...no. Those are mediocre words.
"... and what we are trying to do is NOT put the nose on the ground..."
yes
Excellent sample of the real life of a student of a flight school on his first flights. The instructor is a great teacher, always calm and making the student feel safe. Greetings from SADM in Argentina 🇦🇷
Your instructor didn’t seem worried and was completely chilled. Love that. Made for a good experience for you the student.
Dude. Major props to the instructor. Him staying calm means you stay calm and my god, I'd be shitting bricks.
Such a nice instructor. So calm, and doesn't stress anything too much
Calm instructor makes for a calm student ...well it helps :)
I can't imagine being a trainer and leaving my life in the hands of new pilots. Kudos to them!
That instructor was so calm and composed didn’t fear death at all 😅😂
Absolute legend of an instructor! I'd pay double to people like him. In control, calm and full of advice.
Bro that's a great instructor you have. Mine used to poke me with a pen on my thigh Everytime I fuck up in circuit and landings
balu maganti wow.... I'd have a permanent hole in my thigh if my instructor did that...lol.
Change of instructor if it's still the same ! I'm not in aviation anymore, could not afford the price of licences, etc.. But I can tell you one thing. The first instructor I had was not letting me really learn. I changed and I got my first solo fly very quickly ! The new one trusted me and put me in the worst situations while being able to recover any time to push me to learn about my own mistakes. This was one of the best experience in my life that still brings me things in every day life. Stalls with high speeds and full throttle, deviating with the winds, pushing the rudder on the wrong direction in a crosswind landing, let me unlock my seat before takeoff just to tell me: "hey ! How do you fly the plane now that the controls are out of reach ? Remember: this is exactly how fatal accident happens !" Even let me not see a failure. Suction was lowering and I was surrounded by moutains with a lack of reference to the horizon and beginning to follow false indications... "Are you not in VFR conditions in moutain flying right now ? Did you notice something strange ?" And me: "Her, like it's painful to maitain errr..." He said "Ok, something wrong ? Don't loose time ! You feel it ! So analyse and action !" I saw this little light pop up and noticed the indicating heading was not right with the outside reference. Wow...
The one on the video is the best I've seen !
The aircraft i fly has 3 flap settings, TO, Land and Up, i put my hand near the switch (but not touching it) so i could lower flap as soon as i was within the speed limit and my instructor hit my hand away from the switch...
Ryan.. im not a pilot but it seems like a good lesson in preventing accidental flap changes.
Ryan and Flow, it seems to me that your instructor doesn't want you to lower the flaps until you have the runway assured because they add drag and reduce your glide distance (which wouldn't be great in the event of an engine failure) but you should ask him what are his reasons.
Hey thanks for posting this, I'm still early in my training (10hrs) and struggling a bit with center line defense on landings. Similar to your landings, each landing is a developmental step toward becoming a safe pilot. I appreciate the video, it's most helpful and encouraging.
Thanks for posting a video of not perfect landings definitely helps.
Yes I agree a bad landing can be very demotivating after a lesson and can definitely knock the confidence down.
Very calm and supportive instructor 👍
sharing your bad landings with the internet takes two larger ones than I have. Love it!
Its been humbling! Glad you liked the vid!
....and only a fraction of the size of the CFI's.
Yesterday I made, what looked like, the perfect flare, until I realised I was still about 3 feet from the ground when the plane slowed, stalled and dropped like a rock. Bit of a jolt, lol.
I hate when that happens. How's your flying going now?

You have such a legendary instructor. I love how level headed he is.
Wow.
First off, kudos to you for actually posting your bad landings. It's rare to see them being posted by the actual pilot themselves.
Second, your instructor is absolutely fantastic. He's super relaxed about the whole situation, which does lots to boost confidence.
Great vid.
In the words of my CFI, "Any landing you can walk away from, and the plane is reusable, is a good landing".
I did my 1st landing with no instructor input at 9.3 hours, but they were pretty bad until around 20 hours or so. Oddly, I loved crosswind landings, but was worse on non crosswind landings. Go figure.
Ultimately, quit flying around 60 hours after a number of crashes at the flight school and me getting cold feet. Did my two cross countries, and that was terrifying and awesome at the same time. After spending roughly a year around much better pilots than myself, and hearing of their accidents (including 2 fatalities), I decided I wasnt good enough or comfortable enough to continue past a Sport Pilot rating, and havnt flown in 5 years.
I will remember it as a huge accomplishment, having flown an airplane by myself, even though I later decided it wasnt for me. In the words of John Wayne, "Courage is being scared to death, and doing it anyway", and it literally took all the courage I could muster to push the throttle that first solo. Although, having the tower tell me to move my ass for incoming traffic probably helped a bit as well...
Hippie With A Cowboy Hat Thanks for your comment mate! I think just flying solo is an awesome accomplishment and something you will never forget. As I progress through my own training, now and 17 years ago, I've realised that learning to fly has been as much, if not more, about my mental journey as it just physically flying the plane.
I'm just over 20 hours into PPL training and I do much better with crosswind landings too lol
When I have a light steady crossind, let's say 5 or less, I find it easier too. It's like you have an invisible wall to brace yourself against.
Student mistakes are an important part of the instructor building confidence in the student. Allowing the student of correct bad landings is a supreme learning experience. Without mistakes, the instructor never would know what the student would do in a tight situation. Excellent job, Mr. CFI !!!
Instructor :"Now let's just ease the power right off"
Trainee : *cuts alot of power out
Great videos, love it! Great instructor too. So many instructors over-teach, non stop rambling and suggestions on final. Keep the videos coming!
Thanks for showing man. That’s a great cfi! We’ve all had bad landings that make us cringe.
Amazing example of how you can learn more from your mistakes than from your successes.
bingo
You actually don't learn anything from success !! Only from mistakes
HUGE SALUTE to your instructor. I wish every instructor/captains had this kind of attitude!
That first landing was great! I mean, anytime you can make BOTH sun visors come down at the EXACT same time....amazing.
You got landings down my man.
Time to move on to the next lesson.
The instructor not being a nut case is awesome. I remember the frustrated, screaming, borderline crackhead instructors I had to deal with when learning to drive.
Your instructor reminds me of my instructor. Such a blessing to find patient teachers like this. True professionals who obviously care about their students’ success. Bravo.
This instructor is superb !! Love how relaxed he is. A calm atmosphere in the cockpit is the best to work in
I love how each mistake you apply what you learned from the last one up until the video of your last lesson which shows all of them working altogether. I want to be like you one day!
In Spanish we say "Toma dura, toma segura" which means "tough landing, safe landing", every landing you can walk off is a good landinf
And every landing after you can reuse the plane in one piece was a very good landing 😜
After a good landing you can still fly the plane
I feel better now... and gotta love that instructor.
Great instructor. Him being so calm makes me feel calm. Good dude
Thank you for this! It can be so easy to compare yourself to others and think they they have perfect flying experiences when you're not there to see all of the times they have messed up just like you!
Great videos ! Thanks so much got my solo tomorrow a little stressed glad I'm not the only one. Tha ls mate
Man you have a awesome instructor. He is so cool every time and patiently!!!
So reassuring. Almost crashed on my first. Came in to land, gust of wind came from 7 o’clock pushing the nose almost into the ground. Had to whack full throttle and go around, landed it pretty well the next time.
My first landing had a gust from the west come in at around 5 knotts and I was past the point of no return, left wing dropped as plane stalled right above the runway and rammed full power to climb out. Landed almost alright on the go around though
Instructor: "relax.... Relax.. Ohh.. Very good very good.."
ME: "NOOOO NOOO NOOOOOOOOOOOO" 😂
Love the honesty of these videos! A lot of future pilots can learn a lot from this!
"looking right down the end of the runway" - the single most important instruction! Wish I had heard it earlier in my training...
Same here. Don't know why, but the simple act of just paying attention to where the nose was pointing evaded me in my early hours.
Interesting comment. Where were you inclined to look early in your training?
@@Phineas1626 just in front of the plane, no depth of field, situational awareness, all wrong! Sometimes I glance out the side in a tailwheel to check pitch...
Why is it that no matter what the situation if it’s coming from an Australian’s mouth, I feel everything’s gonna be OK LOL I love those people down under
She’s all good mate lol
We have good pilots, and Australia has a significant place in aviation history.
6 Year old video and still relevant!
Landings feel less like a maneuver and more like art, you're not gonna be perfect right off the bat, and you learn from your mistakes. Watching other people's landings can feel a little bit disheartening like you said, but the more you do it, the better you naturally get.
What a peaceful and chill instructor, make you feel more confidence.
Why is this guy more chill than my dad helping me with math homework?
Does it go something like this:
“Carry the one! Carry the one! You didn’t carry the one! We’re all gonna die!!!!”
Great learning tools you have here. I remember my bad landing days.Im sure these type videos will be great for new pilots that are just starting out IN FLIGHT SCHOOL that are loosing confidence in flying because they cant land.Videos like these are great motivators. Keep Flying , keep landing , keep learning.
Thanks for your feedback Julian. I remember my first hour of circuits where most of these bad landings happened (czcams.com/video/FRdJJRQin2E/video.html). At the end of the lesson I felt like giving it all away but I'm glad I didn't. It all starts to click sooner or later. If your a student just realise that nearly every pilot goes through this transition. Landings for me now is what I look forward to the most.
Working on instrument rating now. But remeber my 1st et of landings like yesterday. i remember telling myself " theres no way i can land a plane " lol..
Man, this brings back memories. Thanks for the upload!
This was great. Tomorrow I practice again with a new attitude. Love the CFIs accent by the way, and his humor.
Great instructor. Reminded me of my training, "what are we doing over here!"
Well, this definitely made me feel better about my landings! (Though my crosswinds earlier today... man those are gonna need some work)
Love the honesty and your instructor!
Was feeling discouraged to continue on with my instrument until I saw this video. I Definitely appreciate the transparency of your training, and I’m glad I found a video that I can relate to so well!
Very nice video! It's cool to see some Aussie pilots on You Tube. Your instructor seems like he has a lifetime of experience. 🛩
Aaron Williamson yeah, I lucked out having this instructor during my initial training.
My CFI would make a fuss when I make small mistakes (smaller than the ones in this video). That's a great CFI right thers
I just want to thank you for this unique video. Most of my landings in training were even worse than this, but I didn’t film them. I certainly didn’t put it out there for the world to see.
I award you one internet point.
Amazing instructor. He's very kind and humble like you uploading they mistakes thar are normal to get when we are learning.
I can so relate to this! Only 100hrs on my logbook and still have those vivid memories of my first attempts to land the thing... Unsure of how many times I wondered if I broke something! Experience helps but I reckon landing an aeroplane is still a hell-of-a-thrill.
and now with hindsight and a few more hours under my belt I wonder how I was ever so bad
Draviator as someone who fly an airplane with conventional landing gear I can't understand how you can fuck up the landing this way with the most easy landing gear type
Then go get a pilot's licence and uninstal FSX. And on the unlikely chance you've got one, go fly a 150/172 for a while. You'll fuck up. Eventually. Add lack of experience into it and these things are going to happen. RPL for 3 montns and bad landings happen. Hit downdrafts during a 10ish knot crosswind and bounced 20-30 feet into the air, didn't have time to flare or go around beforehand. Stop being a smartass and learn some maturity.
Just guessing here, but I guess you fucked up some landings too. The training is no different in that regard. Transitioning from TW to TC is a lot easier than from TC to TW.
I keep the centre line clear for the professionals
This conjures up bad memories of learning to land. Haha. I thought I sucked so bad and I was so incredibly discouraged. Every single time we went out we had awful 15 kn crosswinds and I just could not put it together. My CFI assured me I was OK but it didn't matter. I had over 26 hours, flying twice a week, should have been working on soloing, yet I couldn't even land. Then one day it was blissfully calm in Vero Beach, a rare occurrence that time of year. We set out to work on landings at KOBE and I greased that thing dead on centerline RWY 5 with my instructors hands on his lap first landing. I thought I heard the angels sing. 7 more perfect landings as the winds picked up through late morning. It just all came together. Next lesson he had me taxi to the ramp after the first landing. He hopped out. These days I really pride myself on my ability to land. Having had to struggle early on actually instilled a great amount of confidence in me. I LOVE crosswind landings now, and I OWN them.
Great story mate. Thanks for sharing
Great to see. I’ve made it seems every screw up imaginable too, each one a learning experience- wherever it’s too much energy on final, off Center line, flaring too late etc. it’s all learning!
Exactly the video I need after a bouncy landing earlier this morning. Felt like shit the whole day.
“Just like you’re kissing your sister”
“I said your sister!”
Alabama?
Some of my best landings happened in early evening as well when the air is most smooth and settling down. 👏🏻
Thanks for putting the recent landing on at the end. :) Your instructor had some good advice -- you want the nose down as late as possible. Good job!
Had to put in a at least one good one :)
Awesome video!
Nice
So, I'm not the only one?
There is plenty of us out there :)
yup! Everyone is like this. Some may not be as fast but you'll get there. Just listen to your instructor on what you are doing wrong and focus when you do it.
what a relief.......I was feeling the same where
Same here....oi
Same!
God bless a patient instructor. Makes all the difference in the world. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing... everybody who has had the privilege to learn to fly has had plenty of bad landings. However, once you figure out how to manipulate the power and control inputs correctly on approach / landing, it is such an amazing feeling that you never forget.
"What are we doing over here?"
LOL
This was awesome. You could definitely argue that it's more important to show your bad landings more so than your good ones. That way we can all learn and show that we are human and all make mistakes. Thanks for sharing dude.
Agreed. Best way to learn is to watch other people doing the wrong thing!
Thank you for this. Makes me realise that everyone goes through this and its all about learning from your mistakes. :)
Always good to have an instructor who wants you to succeed and be the future of the aviation industry
Is there such a thing as a not nice not cool Aussie? I've never encountered one. Anyway great video, anyone who can not only admit but show they are 'not perfect' and have 'made mistakes' is a good person..and these days frighteningly few people can 'own' stuff. I'd be your pax any day Romeo! Thanks again for the video!
Thanks TommyT for your kind words. I'd be happy to take you up flying any day!!
I live for people like you and Romeo.
Yes. I used to work at one of the busiest airports in the country, and there were plenty of rude, not cool Aussies.
You're a great person, I can tell. Like what Tommy said, I show respect to people like you. :)
I’m Aussie, there’s a tone of retar-not nice Aussie’s there
Wow, I would've freaked out with a couple of these... very cool CFI there! I don't remember doing this as a student pilot, but we are not born knowing how to fly, so I probably have had several of these hehehe good vid
Javier Llaneza definately a few eye opening moments for me there. tbh, the light support aircraft are much harder to land than your standard Cessna's and pipers.... these type of aircraft really make you a better pilot imho.
Romeo Juliet Whiskey I did all my student pilot hours on a PA11... top that! haha
Javier Llaneza very jealous.....I would love to fly a cub!
A+++ for showing these!! it absolutely made me feel better as a student who just had their first landing a few days ago, and must not have been easy for you to show..
Thanks mate. Honestly didn't think so many people would watch this.
He had a lot of patience in telling you to get TF over 😆 thanks for sharing m8! Can't wait to start flying
"I've never had a bad landing"
- No Good Pilot Ever
Me : "im gonna make this landing perfect". My Lizard Brain, "Whats right rudder"?
Very good instructor. My first was pretty hopeless and the C152 was as old as me. The dashboard used to vibrate so much you couldn't read the instruments. Then I got an ex fighter pilot as instructor. He taught me so well that everything he said is still applicable to everything in life. Do cockpit drills over and over with your eyes closed. You may not have the luxury of lights on instruments if a failure occurs. 40 years later I still remember them all.
Great instructor, so relaxed. My instructor was a bit more old school and was too quick to take control in similar situations. You have to learn from mistakes and more importantly learn how to recover.
I think that's what makes a good instructor. Learn from your mistakes (within reason)
