    Japan has perfect underdog story in this WC. beating host and defending champion Germany, comeback again sweden in semifinal and beat the strongest team U.S.A via penalty in the FINAL. their's story would make great documentary film.

    This is why soccer is a great sports. Regardless of your height or your body mass, your technical skills is all you need to win a game. Japanese ladies are the shortest and smallest in this tournament but they brought down the mighty giants like, Germany, Swedish and elegant USA which could never happen in basket ball game, American football or baseball games. Even volley ball needs some height advantage.

    • @spangari
      @spangari Před 7 lety +9

      You forgot one aspect though. The set piece in penalty area, either from corner kick or elsewhere. Height really gives advantage to tall players with strong upper body and high jump. This is the area where the Japanese team or any Asian teams lacking and always try to avoid in a game. USWNT team scored many goals from these set pieces and endup beating the Nadeshiko.
      Nevertheless, I always favorite Nadeshiko in any games including against the USWNT. They play the purist and beautiful form of football in my opinion. Just fun to watch them playing and always remind me of how beautiful football is.

    • @bronch3733
      @bronch3733 Před 7 lety +1

      spangari That is true. There are individual positions / situations where height and build give you an advantage. I think, compared to most other sports, though, soccer is far more lenient on height requirements for competitive play. It's one of the few sports I can think of where being short and compact is sometimes even an advantage.

    • @charlesking7331
      @charlesking7331 Před 7 lety +3

      Honestly, height advantage had nothing to do with soccer. Corner kicks as you guys mentioned is unpredictable, any height can score from it depends on your position, location and your opponent defensive ability. Japanese women still disproves this claim because their second goal in the final of that 2011 WWC came through heading inside their opponent eighteen yard box in front of the taller USWNT players. All the nation they beat to reach the finals were way taller than them and those nations had many corner kicks but unable convert one goal through corner kicks.

  • @guittadabe5214
    @guittadabe5214 Před 9 lety +278

    The height advantage the Germans have over the Japanese was ridiculous. A true David vs. Goliath achievement for Japan. Then they go and beat Sweden and then the US on penalty kicks. They sure didn't have it easy!

    Maruyama's goal was beautiful, technically perfect and elegant, with a beautiful pass from none other than Sawa. Without Maruyama, there would not have been a championship for Nadeshiko. This Japanese team was and is, deservedly legendary, Sawa & Miyama two genuinely great players. Sawa at that moment, none better. The Americans were lauded for talent, however, every player on the Japanese team was gifted and among the best in the world. With little financial support, a truly amateur team and perhaps the last genuinely amateur team in the WC or Olympics. Many of the players went to practice after working all day at menial jobs. Sawa one of the finest players in the world, ever. And duly recognized so, as FIFA player of the year in 2011. She was 32 years old. They were fantastic and at their peak in 2011.
