The Scariest Day We Ever Had On Our Boat! E166

  • After crossing to the Bahamas and clearing at West End, we make our way down to the Berry Islands. Along the way a squall treats us to 63 knot winds. We thought that would be the highlight of the day - not even close. Later that evening our anchor fails and we drift into an island cliff. We are taking on water fast and can't find a hole in a the boat. Spoiler - we survive

Yikes! I understand that your anchor alarm failed, which is a scary situation. Some recommendations to consider (besides a secondary/backup anchor alarm 🙂): If you're expecting flukey weather or strong tidal flows, you can always set a kedge anchor along with your main. Also, consider posting watches like you would underway if you're unsure of your holding power. If your house batteries can handle it (or you're running the genset through the night), consider a proximity alarm for the radar in case you drag anchor towards leeward.

It’s easy to be a Monday morning quarterback but almost all of us who have cruised and anchored extensively have had our anchor drag. It usually comes down to simple mistakes and complacency. That said, Ed, your anchor is too damn small for that boat. And no decent swivel. And, unless I missed it, no bridle.
It was bad luck you hit that rock ledge instead of nice, soft sand. I hope the damage was minimal. Because the water cleared so quickly, I suspect it came in via the ER vents as you wallowed against the ledge.
Chock it up to a bad day but a good video. And get a bigger anchor.

I thought there was some kind of alarm you can set if the boat moves a certain distance, or gets too close to shore. Not sure on that.
The possibility of dragging anchor at night is unsettling. We anchored our yawl one afternoon and it was windy. I took a dive and followed the anchor line to check the anchor and look for conch. Suddenly I spotted this sea creature headed right for me, bouncing up and down on the bottom.yikes! It was our Danforth, and I grabbed it as it went by and drove it into the bottom. I slept on deck that night, there was moonlight, and got the binoculars out periodically to check our position. We stayed put, thank goodness.

    Questions:
    1) Anchor alarm on GPS/Nav system? Didn't have that in my time on the water 80's - 90's. It was called anchor watch, for a damned good reason, one waterspout later!
    2) Fortress for a main anchor? I used a Danforth as a kedging anchor/stern anchor, Bruce was main. Newer Spade or Rockna's are much better. Also backdown on your anchor 2 minutes at major throttle, to ensure set of the damned thing.
    Fair winds and calm seas.
Best wishes from the far North.

GPS anchor alarm for moving off your anchor waypoint can be set based on your scope - might be helpful - granted you hear it! Float switch for bildge pump equipped, failed?

6 foot seas at 2 sec you were taking water in over the bow or maybe when you were crashing against the wall you were taking waves over the stern!

I wonder if the water in the bilge is from the rain and squals you guys went through or maybe when you guys hit the rock wall it shifted something enough to take on water and then maybe the wood swelled and it stopped leaking !!!! I can't wait for the next episode and I'm glad everyone is ok and you guys didn't sink !!!! It is a day and night difference when you have a Captian like you that knows what they are doing and knows every square inch of your boat and can handle a situation like this and not panic as opposed to someone that would have no idea what to do in this situation !!! Love you guys keep up the amazing videos !!!

  • @MichaelKallelisOn2Wheels

Wow! You drifted a fairly good distance. Amazing you got off that rock ledge easily, and with only one engine!! I pictured a good breeze blowing you on the ledge and the waves pushing you up against it too, preventing you from swinging the bow or the stern. Maybe you have bow and stern thrusters. Good job. I can't wait to find out how the water came into the generator room. A night time watch would be a lot to ask of someone, but I guess that's why the old timers did that. Maybe the anchor alarm as a sentry. As your channel says, "Trying Not to Sink".

Hope this finds you, the outside dog knows before me, lets me know that something is coming. Even storms.
The odd thing is, I have not found a barometer with an alarm preset.
I see the dog, I check the barometer then get things ready. Most of the time I have enough water so I just do the things so nothing gets wet. But most of the time I still set up the water collection system just to make sure it works and clean it once more. The rain comes and goes so quickly but sometimes it's a lot of water most of the time it's just enough for a shower.
Big question is how come I can't find and I'm bomber with a pressure alarm to alarm me when the pressure changes enough to where my body doesn't have time to recognize it but a dog or an animal recognizes it just about every time.

Funny story also. We took our boat out to the Bahamas like weeks after getting it and we had no idea what we were doing. Our troubles started in Nassau right after leaving the boat at anchor all day, like 3 minutes after we got back. Our anchor alarm went off in a crowded anchorage and by the skin of our teeth, we managed not to hit anyone and broke off the anchor. Well, we recovered that about an hour later. At about 1 am, another squal came in and now we slipped 2 anchors. In getting control of the boat, we broke the anchor off again. We got it back the, next morning, but just could not get a hold on anything. And to top it off, the boat next to us not answering to customs was Shenanigans whom we got to know at Shroud Cay and later at the Moorings in warderick Wells mooring balls. That night in Nassau though was the scariest for us so far. Glad nothing terrible happened.

I had similar issue some years ago, boat and me had no gps. Had little idea where i was, just headed into wind with the sound of waves crashing on rocks astern. It worked out luckily. Here in 2022 I have a free anchor alarm app in my iPhone, most modern gps systems will have it , it’s that or anchor watch all night, the app wins. Glad to see you came through well, look forward to next posting. Drama for some reason is more enticing to view, a human trait I guess.
